Over the years, Rachel and her family witnessed a severe change in the landscape f their hme in Pennsylvania. The ppulatin grew, and the twn gt dirtier and plluted as it became mre industrial.
“I’m ging t be a writer,” Rachel tld her gd friend Olga. “And, I’m ging t write abut my lve f nature. I want t shw hw industrializatin and prgress can cause damage and changes t animals, birds, and plants.”
When Rachel went t cllege, she majred in English. But because f her lve f nature, she sn switched t bilgy and later wrked fr the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.
In 1945, Rachel first became aware f the pssible dangers f pesticides. Pesticides ( 杀 虫 剂 ), like DDT, are chemicals that kill insects that might hurt plants and crps. Years later, her friend Olga witnessed this danger firsthand. “It was hrrible,” she tld Rachel. “After the use f DDT, seven sngbirds died in ne place. Then fr days after, we’d find mre birds dead.”
“I knw,” said Rachel. “True, DDT kills harmful insects, but it als kills the gd insects we need fr pllinatin and ther purpses. It stays in the envirnment. When birds eat the pisned insects, they get sick. If the bird desn’t die, the pisn can harm its ffspring.”
Olga waved her arms wildly. “We have t d smething abut this.” Rachel went t her desk and grabbed a handful f papers. She handed them t Olga. “I’m writing a bk frm all the research I’ve gathered. It will be called Silent Spring. I’ll shw hw pesticides and ther harmful chemicals can hurt nature.”
Olga raised her eyebrws. “Yu knw the chemical manufacturers will fight yu. If the gvernment believes pesticides are harmful, they’ll begin an investigatin and pssibly utlaw them. The manufacturers will lse mney.” Rachel lwered her eyes. “I knw, but it’s a battle wrth fighting. We have t prtect the envirnment.”
What mtivates Rachel t becme an envirnmentalist?
    Her family’s supprt.
    Olga’s cnstant encuragement.
Her switch f majr in cllege.
    Negative effects frm develpment.
What d we knw abut the bk Silent Spring?

It’s abut the damage caused by industrializatin.
It is intended t raise peple’s awareness f the risk frm chemicals.
It tells the stry abut Olga’s witness f several birds’ death frm pisn.
What’s the last paragraph mainly abut?
Olga was wrried abut the harmful pesticides.
The gvernment will take actin abut pesticides.
Rachel was determined t prtect the envirnment.
Chemical manufacturers will prbably ppse Rachel.

T determine if dgs display jealus (妒忌的) behavir, investigatrs set up a testing cnditin where the dgs culd imagine that scial interactin between their wner was taking place with anther dg. Fr safety’s sake, they didn’t use anther real dg, but rather a realistic mdel f a dg that might be viewed as a ptential cmpetitr fr attentin. As a cntrl cmparisn, they used a cylinder (圆柱) that was wrapped in wl.
The test started ut with the dgs tied n ne side f the rm. The dgs bserved the “dg cmpetitr” sitting next t their wner. While the dg watched, a barrier was rlled int place between the dg and its ptential “cmpetitr” s that they culd nly see their wner frm the waist up. Althugh the dgs culd nt see what their wner was ding with his hands, they culd see him r her bending ver and repeating sme lving phrases like “What a gd by!”.
The chain that the dg was tied t was attached t the equipment that culd recrd hw hard the dg was pulling n it. Thus the measure f the degree f jealusy was hw pwerfully dgs attempted t reach their wners when they appeared t be petting the cmpetitr “dg” behind the barrier. It was determined that this pulling really was based n jealusy because, in the cnditin where the wners were petting a wl-cvered cylinder rather than the mdel dg, the dgs pulled with far less frce. Remember that all f these activities happened just because f the dg’s mental picture as t what was ging n since everything belw the wner’s waist was hidden by the barrier.
Dgs’ ability t cnnect the dts and infer that their wners’ actins were directed tward a hidden cmpetitr suggests that dgs nt nly are capable f mentally representing scial interactins but als specifically d s when interpreting interactins that might threaten the scial bnd they have with their wners. This means that dgs, like peple, can feel the strng negative emtin that Shakespeare called “the green-eyed beast.”
Why is a cylinder wrapped in wl used in the study?
    T hide the wner’s waist.
    T cntrl the mdel dg.
T act as a cmparisn t the cmpetitr dg.
T prvide cmfrt fr the dgs feeling jealusy.
Hw is the dg’s degree f jealusy measured?
Hw their wners pet the cylinder.
Hw frcefully the dgs pull n the lead.
Hw ften the lving phrases are repeated.
Hw their wners shw lve t the mdel dg.
What makes the dgs shw their jealusy?
The mdel dg was sitting nearby.
Their wners were bending ver t repeat lving wrds.
Belw the wner’s waist was a wl-cvered cylinder.
Sme cmpetitr dg was stealing their wner’s lve away frm them.

Happiness is nt natural. It’s a mere human cnstruct. It’s a state f cntentment discuraged by ur genetic design because it wuld lwer ur guard against pssible threats t ur survival.
Chasing happiness is like chasing a shadw, but the psitive thinking industry claims t knw its secrets. Self-help was ppularized by Nrman Vincent Peale, an American minister. He invented “psitive thinking”, a cncept nw deeply rted in ur culture and steadily grwing in influence.
Ppular films and bks are full f suppsedly inspiratinal statements abut hw all yu need t d is believe in yurself and then yu’ll be able t achieve anything in life. This is simply, and bviusly, nt true. I dn’t think there is a need t explain that many bstacles and misfrtunes in life are unavidable, r cannt be vercme. Our ancestrs knew this, and many philsphical and religius traditins are based n the acceptance that being alive is a very challenging task, which cmes with significant amunts f suffering. It ges withut saying that we shuld d all we can t maximize ur sense f wellbeing and minimize ur suffering, but the end result cannt be a state f sustained happiness. We are nt designed that way.
It culd be argued that psitive psychlgy blames thse wh are suffering fr their suffering, as it is based n the idea that unhappiness is entirely avidable. It fllws therefre that an unhappy persn must be inadequate and incmpetent. Psitive psychlgy encurages peple wh are struggling with a particular gal t persevere in the face f unfavrable pssibilities, which is much mre punishing psychlgically in the lng run than accepting defeat.
I believe that cming t terms with life as it is, and nt as the happiness industry tells us it culd be, will make us happier, and we will feel mre at peace with urselves and with the wrld. Unfrtunately, the
devil always has the best tunes.
Which f the fllwing statements will the writer prbably agree?
Happiness is a gal that can be achieved.
Happiness is an idea created by human being.
Ppular culture helps discver the secrets f happiness.
Happiness enables peple t fight against ur survival dangers.
What’s the writer’s attitude twards psitive thinking industry?
    A. Disapprving.B. Supprtive.C. Sympathetic.D. Indifferent.
What des the writer mean by saying “the devil always has the best tunes” in last paragraph?
Happiness industry has strng influence n peple.
Peple begin t accept that life is full f challenge.
Reducing suffering can guarantee life-lng happiness.
Unhappiness will nt necessarily dminate peple’s life.
What can be a suitable title fr the text?
    A. Happiness in SufferingB. The Pursuit f Happiness
    C. The Happiness FantasyD. Happiness Chasing Industry

In gardens acrss Britain the grass has stpped grwing. 31 In fact, they are greener and tidier than befre. That is because the lawns are actually artificial made frm plastic.

Artificial grass is ppular with families wh have children r dgs and dn’t want mud pulled behind thrugh their huses. It has an attractive factr, t. Andy Driver f Evergreens UK says peple nw see gardens as “utside rms” — pairing carpets f artificial grass with cmfrtable seating.
Nt everyne is a fan. 34 A study finds earthwrms ( 蚯 蚓 ) gain 14% less bdy weight when perating under artificial grass. That might nt be a prblem fr its fans, as wrm hles are a regular headache, but it upsets green types. Extinctin Rebellin dug up artificial grass utside a church in Harrgate in prtest.
Three prtestrs have tried t stp artificial grass spreading. 35 The RHS is cncerned abut artificial grass, but prefers persuasin t law-making.
    Britns are fascinated by lawns.
They are nt lacking water r drught-stricken.
These ec-gardeners are mre likely t be envirnmentalists.
Betap, a Dutch firm, has recently launched its first British designs.
Artificial grasses cntain micrplastics that ruin sil and risk flding.
