Christina Moffett met the love of her life, Alexander, in high school. “We knew each other through music. But we lost touch after graduation,” the 25-year-old said. “When we were in college, our high school music program had a get-together and we reconnected.”
The couple dated long distance ( 距离) throughout college until Christina moved back to Wisconsin in 2018. The two decided to spend the rest of their lives together on their fifth anniversary
As Christina began to think about what she should wear on her wedding ( 婚礼) day, she turned to a few of the most important ladies in her life for some guidance. “My grandma, mother and mother-in-law had all mentioned at one point that it would be fun to have me try on their wedding dresses. So I had a tea party with them. I also invited my sister-in-law and two best friends to model the dresses,” she said.
Christina began the fashion show with the dress her mom, Karen Spaeth, wore — a beautiful lace dress with a big train — and “felt like a princess ( 公主).” Next came the dress her mother-in-law, Anne Moffett, wore, which Christina said “was the comfiest thing I've ever worn; it felt like my best pajamas (睡衣).”
Last but not least came the dress that Christina's grandmother, Shirley Ekstrand (fondly called “Mite”), wore back in 1956. And the third was the charm. “It was so beautiful, classy and timeless. I knew it was the look I wanted for my wedding. It was a very Grace Kelly look,” she said.
On her wedding day in October 2019, Christina wore another “something old”: earrings her grandmother had given her mother years before. Stepping into Mite's wedding dress on that special day felt a bit like a dream for Christina. “It added to the whole experience and made it so much more special by adding deep family love to it,” she said.
    24. What can we learn about Christina and Alexander?
    A. They started dating in 2018.
    B. They went to the same college.
    C. They were in the same music program.
    D. They met each other about five years ago.
    25. Whom did Christina ask for advice on her wedding dress?
    A. Her sister.
    B. Her husband.
    C. Her best friends.
    D. Her mothers and grandma.
    26. What did Christina think of Anne Moffett's wedding dress?
    A. Comfortable.            B. Traditional. C. Beautiful.                      D. Creative.
    27. Whose wedding dress did Christina choose at last?
    A. Karen Spaeth's.                             B. Anne Moffett's.
    C. Shirley Ekstrand's.                  D. Grace Kelly's.

It was about a year ago when a positive change in a community started.
I was in fifth grade, and at the time I wrote a paper about the migration of the monarch butterfly and received a perfect score. I was so happy; I called my grandmother, Nana, to tell her the exciting news. All of my talk about monarchs evoked memories from Nana's childhood. “I remember when I was a girl out on the farm,” she said, “those black and orange butterflies were a common sight. But there do seem to be fewer monarchs fluttering ( 翩翩飞舞) around the neighborhood each summer. Perhaps we should try to find out where they've gone.”
Nana and I decided to investigate.
That weekend, Nana met me at the public library and we started our research. Our research produced plenty of information. The best information was this: It doesn't take lots of money, equipment (设备), or government organizations to save the monarch butterflies; it takes only a little bit of land, and dedicated ( 专心致志的) people to create what's called a Monarch Waystation. When I read this, an idea came to mind. “What if we set up our own Monarch Waystation?” I suggested.
“We'll need several people to help us!” she replied.
The next week, Nana presented the idea to her garden club; I talked to my friends and neighbors. Nana's garden club decided to plant a butterfly garden next to the city park. The library put together a display of gardening and butterfly books. The editor of the local newspaper wrote an informative article on how to make our community monarch-friendly. As spring turned into summer, those volunteers also worked to weed (除杂草) and care for the public gardens. We all waited and watched to see whether our plan would work — it did work! Over twenty black and orange butterflies were noticed visiting the waystations. As summer progressed, the monarchs grew more plentiful.
It happened on a day when the sun was shining and the sky was a deep blue. As monarchs fluttered around us, people laughed and danced; Nana cried tears of happiness. It was truly a meaningful experience.
    28. What does the underlined word “evoked” in Paragraph 2 probably mean?

    A. It should be built in a park.
    B. It can be created and used easily.
    C. It needs continued support from the government.
    D. It is the best way to protect the monarch butterfly.

Flocks of flamingoes ( 火 烈 鸟 群) are collections of little friendship groups just like a schoolyard at playtime, new research shows. The birds also avoid certain individuals ( 个 体), suggesting some just don't get along.
The University of Exeter scientists studied different flocks of flamingoes at a wetland wildlife reserve in the UK called WWT Slimbridge and found social bonds ( 关系) including “married” couples, same-sex friendships and even groups of three and four close friends.
“Our results suggest that flamingo societies are complex. They are made up of long-standing friendships,” said Dr Paul Rose, of the University of Exeter in the UK. “Flamingoes don't simply find a mate and spend their time with that individual. Lots of other relationships also take up their time.”
Flamingoes have long lives — some of the birds in this study have been at Slimbridge since the 1960s — and the study shows their friendships last for a period of years. It seems that — like humans — flamingoes form relationships for a variety of reasons, and the fact that they are so long-lasting suggests they are important for survival in the wild.
Dr Rose said the findings could help in the management of flamingoes living in zoos. “When moving birds from one zoo to another, we should be careful not to separate flamingoes that are closely bonded to each other,” he said.
The study used information collected between 2012 and 2016 and looked at flocks of Caribbean, Chilean, Andean and Lesser flamingoes. The flocks were different in size, from just over 20 to more than 140, and the findings suggest larger flocks contain the most social interactions ( 互动), and seasons affect social interactions, with more bonds forming in spring and summer.
In three of the four flocks, the study also looked at the condition of the birds (measured by the health of their feet) to see if there was a connection between social lives and health. No connection was found, and Dr Rose said this could mean that socialising was so important to flamingoes that they continued to do it even if they were not feeling at their best.
    32. What did the study done by the University of Exeter find?
    A. Flamingoes usually live for many years.
    B. Flamingoes in larger flocks are more likely to be happy.
    C. Flamingoes often do less socialising when they are sick.
    D. Flamingoes mostly spend time with a small group of close friends.
    33. What does the underlined word “they” in Paragraph 4 refer to?
    A. Humans.                   B. Flamingoes.      C. Relationships.                   D. Reasons.
    34. What can we learn about the study?
    A. It took place in the US.
    B. It lasted for about two years.
    C. It researched four flocks of flamingoes.
    D. It mainly researched flamingoes in zoos.
    35. Where does the text probably come from?
    A. A research plan.                     B. A business report.
    C. A local newspaper.           D. A nature magazine.
Zoos are hugely popular attractions for children. But are they actually a good thing?
Critics (批评者) of zoos would argue that animals often feel painful physically and mentally by being enclosed.  36  This deprivation ( 剥夺) causes many zoo animals to become stressed or mentally ill.
37  By bringing people and animals together, zoos educate and encourage the public to protect animals. Some zoos provide a safe environment for pets which have been mistreated.  38  Some research also focuses on how to treat illnesses.
One of the most important modern functions ( 功能) of zoos is supporting international breeding ( 繁育) programs, particularly for endangered species. In the wild, some of the rarest species have difficulty in breeding.  39  However, critics of zoos say that most breeding programs do not set animals free into the wild. Many animals are sold not only to other zoos but also to hunting ranches (狩猎牧场) in the US or South Africa, where some people are willing to pay a lot of money for the chance to kill an animal in a specific area. Often, these animals are familiar with humans and have very little chance of running away.
40  Perhaps it all depends on how well individual zoos are managed, but the advantages of zoos probably outweigh their harmful influence.
    A. But do they need more freedom?
    B. So, are zoos good for animals or not?
    C. On the other hand, zoos do have their advantages.
    D. Zoos also carry out important research into subjects like animal behavior.
    E. A good zoo will enable these species to live and breed in a safe environment.
    F. However, many people believe hunting wild animals for any reason is simply wrong.
    G. Even the best zoos can't match the freedom that animals have in their natural habitats.

My mom mentions to the Clarksons that I'm kind of the babysitter (代人临时照看小孩的人) in our building and that if they ever need me, I'm responsible.
Three days later, I'm playing a matching game with Mr. and Mrs. Clarkson's five-year-old son, Billy, while they enjoy a movie. Things get interesting after a flash of lightning (闪电) brightens the darkening sky, followed by a crash of thunder. Billy flies off the sofa and runs to his room.
The Clarksons gave me some instructions, but they didn't tell me what to do if their kid decided to hide under his bed.
    “What's wrong, Billy?” I ask.
“I'm afraid of thunderstorms,” he says.
I don't want Billy to have an unhappy night. What can I do? I look around and see Billy's sports prizes. Then it hits me. “If you don't come out, you're going to miss the funderstorm.”
He corrects me, “You mean ‘thunderstorm.’”
“Nope. I mean funderstorm. It's having fun during a thunderstorm,” I explain. “When the lightning flashes, you see how many things you can do before the thunder comes.”
    “Like a competition?”
    “Yep.”
At that moment, lightning lights up the room. Billy looks at me expectantly. I see a lone sock hanging from his dresser drawer. “How many socks can you put on one foot? Go!”
He runs to his dresser and starts putting on socks. His right foot grows bigger with each new one. I count along. “3 ... 4 ... 5 ...” He gets to 8 before the thunder breaks and shakes the windows.
It also shakes his nerves. Before he can jump back under the bed, I shout, “Let's see your hopping (单脚跳) skills. Go!”
    The sky lights up.
He starts hopping on one foot. After seconds, he changes to the other foot. He's at 29 hops when a softer boom (隆隆声) shows the end of the round.
“That's the best I've ever done. What else?” he says.
I smile. Now he's really on board. “You getting hungry?” I ask. “When the next lightning flashes, go to the kitchen, get the biscuits, and come back.”

    One possible version:
I can still see a little worry in his eyes, so I ask, “Are you OK?” “Yes,” he says confidently, surprising me with the speed of his answer. I shout “Go!” exactly when the flash comes. He runs out of his room. Sixteen seconds later, he runs back in, drops the container of biscuits on his dresser, and falls breathlessly onto the floor. “Sixteen seconds,” I say, looking at my watch and smiling. “Not bad.” We don't hear anything for a minute or two. “I think the storm is going away,” he says. So is the worried look on his face.
When the Clarksons return, they are sorry for not calling home. They were in the cinema and didn't hear the storm. “How did our boy weather the thunderstorm?” Mrs. Clarkson asks. “Funderstorm,” Billy corrects her, giving me a knowing look. “And I can't wait till the next one!” Billy isn't kidding. I can't take other babysitting jobs if storm clouds start moving because I'll know to expect a call from the Clarksons. Billy has a lot of records to break.

    32. D。 Flamingoes don't simply find a mate and spend their time with that individual. Lots of other relationships also take up their time可知,火烈鸟除了陪伴伴侣,也在其它社交关系上花费时间。
    33. C。 划线词后面的longlasting说明了划线词所指代事物的特点,再由上文中的their friendships last for a period of years和flamingoes form relationships for a variety of reasons可知,火烈鸟因为种种缘故构建的社交关系会持续多年,因此可推断,划线词指代的是火烈鸟之间的关系。
    34. C。 The study used information collected between 2012 and 2016 and looked at flocks of Caribbean, Chilean, Andean and Lesser flamingoes和最后一段中的In three of the four flocks可知,该研究的对象为四个火烈鸟群。
    36. G。G项中的can't match the freedom that animals have in their natural habitats与上文中的being enclosed及下文中的This deprivation相照应,说明动物园限制了动物的自由。
    37. C。 根据下文中的educate and encourage the public以及provide a safe environment可知,此处主要说明的是动物园的优势,同时C项中的On the other hand与上文的内容形成转折关系。
    39. E。E项中的to live and breed in a safe environment与上文中的supporting international breeding programs以及have difficulty in breeding相照应,说明现代动物园最重要的功能之一是支持国际繁育计划,动物园可以为有繁殖困难的野生动物提供一个安全的繁育环境。
    40. B。 But are they actually a good thing首尾呼应,说明本文主旨是探讨动物园的利弊。 Perhaps it all depends on how well individual zoos are managed可知,作者认为动物园对动物有益还是有害取决于每一个动物园的管理。
    41. A。由文章首段中的experience something very special及本句中的a night spent in a transparent dome ... in the bush of Thailand's Golden Triangle可知,这个夜晚“非同寻常(unusual)”。
    42. C。下文中的visit the conservation area of the Golden Triangle to get closer to the elephants here 及I take picture after picture of the elephants standing nearby提示透明的穹状建筑物距离生活在丛林深处的亚洲象“只(just)”有几英尺。
    43. D。 You are about to experience something very special为提示,故本空选择experience。
When I discovered the Jungle Bubbles可知,此处表示“我”抓住与这些大象共度一夜的机会。
I take picture after picture of the elephants standing nearby
    49. A。下文中的No phone, no news 及I watch as the three elephants that will be ... tonight play in a mud hole可提示“我”唯一需要做的事情就是看大象,故选watch。
    51. D。由本句中的blowing hard to clear the mud out of their noses可知,天黑时,大象们终于从泥坑里出来了。leave(离开)符合语境。
    56. reasons。
    57. of。 remind sb. of sth.
    58. using。
    59. which。
    60. wonderful。
    61. bigger。
    62. is called。
    63. simply。
    64. as。 such as例如。
    65. to care。 want to do sth.
本套试题复现的教材词汇有:important, beautiful (beauty), experience, migration, monarch butterfly, perfect, exciting (excited), black and orange, find out, research, information, help, plant, park, spring, work, sun, a way to do sth., protect, certain, wildlife, relationship, human, variety, manage, interact (interaction), measure, feeling, live, magazine, popular, zoo animal, educate, encourage, environment, pet, in the wild, difficulty, chance, kill, behavior, habitat, ability, feed, main reason, panda, remind (reminder), eat, visitor, amazed, food, wonderful, eyes, increase, awareness, photo, excellent, nature photographer, color
