    A

Tanghulu is a special and sweet childhood memory of many Chinese people. When winter comes, you can see people selling Tanghulu on each street in Beijing. Bright red in color, with perfect sweet-and-sour taste, Tanghulu is a popular traditional snack in most parts of northern China. In the past, people mainly used the hawthorn(山楂)to make Tanghulu. But now, people prefer to use other fruits like oranges, bananas, grapes and strawberries. To make the perfect Tanghulu, you can follow these steps:

    Prepare what you need:

Hawthorns or other fruit, white sugar and water.

    Step 1

Start off by washing the hawthorns or any other fruit you choose. Once done, dry the fruit.

    Don't forget this step.

    Step 2

Put the fruit on bamboo sticks. If you use long sticks, put 4-6 pieces of fruit on each stick.

If you use short ones, 1-3 pieces are enough.

    Step 3

Add water and white sugar in a pan and then mix them well. Heat the pan until bubbles( )appear and color changes. When doing this, you can test the temperature of the mixture by dipping () a spoon of the mixture in cold water. When the mixture hardens (变硬) immediately, you have the right temperature. It is the key to making perfect Tanghulu.

    Step 4

Now, dip each fruit stick into the sugar mixture to easily coat the fruit. Remember to turn it to coat all of the sides.

    Step 5

Once done, place each stick on a plate. Remember to leave enough space between each other to stop them from sticking. After a few minutes, you can taste them.

With the step-by-step instructions, you can have a try at home. Try with different kinds of fruits to see which taste you like best.

It seems like only yesterday since I first started school in the Czech (捷克)Republic. It was a totally new country for mea place where I was only supposed to stay for one year as an exchange student (交换生).

I still remember I was late that morning, as I got off at the wrong metro station (地铁站). I felt ashamed when I sent a text to my counselor (指导老师)that I would be late. After she picked me up at the station, she said, "Don't worry, Linda. It's fine to be late by just a few minutes. The teacher will understand. "

Later, as I walked to the classroom, my English teacher taught me some basic Czech sentences so I could introduce myself to my classmates.

The next moment was probably the most embarrassing of my life. I can still picture myself standing in front of 30 strangers and introducing myself in poor Czech. I wasn't even sure whether they would understand me or not.

Nevertheless (然而), many of them came to my desk during the break and tried to make friends with me. They even went for a walk with me around the school after lunch.

Now, I’ve been studying in this country for three years. Every time I look back to my first day of senior high, I always wish that I wasn't so shy. Though my new life didn't start easily, I was so lucky to have my new classmates there to help and talk to me.

I’ve been interested in languages for as long as I can remember. My dad was a language genius. My family traveled widely when I was a child, and my dad would talk to everyone we met with ease. His abilities greatly impressed me. I wished then that I would someday be able to speak as many languages as he had been able to.

I wasn't a natural language learner. When I was 11 years old, I made slow progress with French at school and almost gave it up. After I entered college, I read many German writers in translation. I loved them so much that I wanted to read them in their native tongue. This desire drove me to pick up German. Once I had mastered German, I found myself in love with languages. Since then, I have never stopped learning new languages. By my late twenties, I was able to speak French, Latin and Greek.

I'm often asked what my secret is. The answer is, predictably, endless hours of reading and studying. Before I got married, I would spend 16 hours every day studying languages. I used to like walking fast outdoors while listening to a recording of language and repeating it out loud.

Now, I can read about 40 languages and speak most of them fluently. Asian languages are more difficult to master. It took me almost ten years to get my Korean skills close to native level. I live in Singapore now. At home, I speak French with my sons. If my Korean wife is there, we'll use English. When we don5t want the kids to understand our conversations, we use Korean.

I've studied Esperanto (世界语). Though I can see the benefits of a world language, I think the world would be a less interesting place if there were only one language. It would be like visiting a garden where there was only one type of plant!

    A. walking fast outdoors     B. chatting with native speakers

    C. following traditional methods   D. doing lots of grammar exercises

    C. Asian languages are difficult to master

    D. there are no shortcuts to learning languages

    C

Without proper planning, tourism can cause problems. For example, too many tourists can make public places overcrowded. The local people are unhappy about this because they also want to enjoy these places. If tourists cause too much traffic, the local people will feel the same. They will then begin to dislike tourists and start treating them impolitely. But they often forget how much tourism can help the local economy (经济). It is important to think about how tourism affects the local people. The local customs and beauty should be kept by the local government to attract tourists. Meanwhile, the government should care about the health and happiness of the local people when developing tourism.

Too much tourism can be a problem. If tourism grows too quickly, people may leave other jobs to work in the tourism industry because they can make more money there. As a result, other parts of the local economy may suffer. On the other hand, if there is not enough tourism, many people may become jobless.

It costs a lot of money to build large hotels, airports, first-class roads and other support facilities (设施). For example, each room of a first-class hotel usually costs about 50, 000 dollars. If the rooms of the hotel aren5t used most of the time, the owner of the hotel will lose money.

Building a hotel is just the beginning. The planning and building of all of the other related support facilities require the effort of a large number of people. If these facilities are not used because there are not enough tourists, in the long run, the economy will suffer.

    56. According to the author, too much traffic caused by tourism will make the local people feel ___________.

    A. excited   B. satisfactory   C. unhappy   D. confused

    57. According to the author, proper development of tourism is _________for the economy.

    A. useless   B. helpful    C. dangerous   D. responsible

    58. In order to attract tourists, the government may try to ________________.

    A. keep taxes low      B. create clear laws and rules

    C. build many first-class hotels   D. keep the local customs and beauty

    59. What could happen if there is not enough tourism?

    A. More roads need to be rebuilt.    B. Hotel owners will feel relaxed.

    C. Many hotels need to be redesigned.   D. Some people will have no jobs to do.

    60. What is the main idea of this article?

    A. The importance of planning tourism.

    B. The reasons why people lose their jobs.

    C. The advantages of developing tourism.

    D. The disadvantages of building too many hotels.

    Do encyclopedias know everything?

Long before Wikipedia(维基百科)or Encyclopedia Britannica(大英百科全书), there was Pliny the Elder. He was a first-century Roman researcher. His assistants read to him while he ate dinner and while he bathed. All he while, Pliny took notes. He even considered walking a waste of time. His assistants carried him around Rome in a chair while he read.

All of this was done in preparation for his Historia Naturalis. The book was published in A. D. 77. It is considered the oldest surviving (现存的)encyclopedia on Earth. There are 2, 500 chapters. They cover everything from mice to Mars.

""No Roman author has completed such a project, "Pliny proudly declared. Unluckily, two years after having published the encyclopedia, he died in a natural disaster.

Accidents can hardly be avoided. However, they can be recorded. Editors(编辑)of encyclopedias, like Pliny, organize the knowledge of our world. Like a valuable gift, the books are passed down through the ages. They begin their lives as a tool and end them as a historical record.

Therefore, in my opinion, an encyclopedia is not just a record of what its editors know, it's also a record of what they don't know.

Pliny was wrong when he said there were seven planets, including the Sun and the Moon. He was wrong, too, when he said Africans were black from being burnt by the Sun. After all, Historia Naturalis is a book edited by a Roman thousands of years ago. It contained all of the things he truly knew at the time.

Similarly, I believe both Wikipedia and Encyclopedia Britannica have some inaccurate(不准确的)information. Even the biggest encyclopedias only represent what their editors know.

"The task of editing an encyclopedia can never be completed, " said Roger Lewinter, an American researcher. Encyclopedias can't record all of human knowledge but just some of it. They are always waiting for someone—you, perhaps—to improve them.

    56. According to the article, before Pliny the Elder completed Historia Naturalis,

    A. nobody knew what Mars was

    B. there was no encyclopedia on Earth

    C. nobody had considered walking a waste of time

    D. no Roman author had completed an encyclopedia

    57. The underlined word "declared"(in paragraph3) is closest in meaning to"_____________".

    A. made     B. said    C. created    D. took

    58. When did Pliny the Elder die in a natural disaster?

    A. In A. D. 79.   B. In A. D. 77.   C. In A. D. 75.    D. In 77 B. C.

    58. According to the article, which of the following statements can we find in Hitoria Naturalis?

    A. Among all the continents, Africa is the farthest from the Sun.

    B. There are many mice in Africa.

    C. The Sun is a planet.

    D. Mars is not a planet.

    60. The author of this article expects his readers to

    A. improve an encyclopedia

    B. find all the mistakes in Historia Naturalis.

    C. complete the task of editing an encyclopedia

    D. take a look at the world's biggest encyclopedia
