Between Thailand and Vietnam tourists tend to ignore that there is an entire country to be discovered beyond the decaying temples. If you’ve never been to Cambodia before, it can be overwhelming to take it all in at once. We’ve put together a guide for you to make things easier.
    Arrival at Cambodia
Most visitors arrive in Cambodia via Siem Reap International Airport, which is three miles from Angkor Wat and roughly five miles from the city of Siem Reap. You can take minibuses, buses, or domestic flights from Siem Reap to other country regions, such as Phnom Penh, Battambang, Kampot, and Sihanoukville.
To travel to Cambodia, tourists require a visa. Check the Cambodian Ministry of Tourism website for the latest information on policies before making travel arrangements.
    Things to do in Cambodia
If you’re thinking about a holiday to Cambodia, we have two recommendations for you:
    Siem Reap
Siem Reap, a tiny village about five kilometres south of Angkor Wat, has grown into the fastest-growing settlement in Cambodia. When it comes to tourist attractions, Siem Reap is all about delicious cuisine, traditional cottages, and a number of fun activities that won’t ruin your holiday.
    Tonle Sap
Tonle Sap, Southeast Asia’s largest freshwater lake, grows from 1,000 square miles to 6,200 square miles during the rainy season, from June to October. Over 300 species of freshwater fish breed in the flooded forests, and the lake supplies half of Cambodia's entire fish catch. A short drive north of Siem Reap, Tonle Sap is known for its floating villages, where entire populations depend on the lake for their survival.
    Where to stay
As Cambodia’s most popular gateway city for tourists, Siem Reap has a wide variety of accommodation options, from hostels to five-star hotels. Booking in advance is especially important if you plan to travel during the peak season of December and February.
    Best time to visit
Visit Cambodia in the dry season, which lasts from the end of November to the beginning of April. The Angkor temples are far more pleasant to visit during the dry season when the weather is cooler.
    21. Which of the following item is a must for foreigners before visiting Cambodia?
    A. A Visa. B. An Airline ticket.
    C. A travel permit. D. A travel brochure.
    22. What is special about Tonle Sap?
    A. It’s the largest freshwater lake in Asia.
    B. It possesses rich fishing resources.
    C. It’s the fastest-growing settlement in Cambodia.
    D. It is Cambodia’s most popular gateway city.
    23. If Jack is a food blogger particular about accommodation, you’re likely to recommend ________.
    A. Tonle Sap B. Angkor Wat
    C. Phnom Penh D. Siem Reap
    B
It is nearly dawn, and the yellow moon has just set behind coconut trees. Spots of pink appear in the sky and a glorious red ball of fire slowly rises. Birds have begun to gather in their hundreds in the Changaram wetland in Kerala's Alappuzha district. George, with binoculars (双筒望远镜) glued to his eyes, is busy recognizing the birds: “Little egrets, garganeys...”He pauses. “But what are those three there? Ah, spot-billed ducks,” he says when he spots the typical band of brilliant jade-green on the wings.
His binoculars are off his eyes now, but his fingers are flying over his phone screen, typing the names of the species he has sighted on eBird, an app where birdwatchers upload real-time information on species. As a citizen scientist, he has been on eBird for three years and takes pride in being the country’s “eighth best eBirder” based on the number of his check-lists.
eBird is just now drawing in ordinary people into the process of ecological(生态学的)science and conservation. Citizen scientists can ask questions, volunteer to collect data, and analyse them. For researchers, citizen scientists are a boon: with their large numbers, they can contribute extensive data over vast geographical areas, something trained scientists could not dream of gathering either individually or in teams.
While it may appear to be a new concept, the public has always participated in ecological science, said a team of American scientists in a 2012 study. Chinese citizens and officials, for instance, tracked locust(蝗虫)attacks for at least 3, 500 years although they did not know their observations would later be used for science.
Today, thanks to smartphones, the Internet and the endless possibilities of apps, citizen science has truly come of age around the world, helping create a vast and valuable collection of data.
    24. Why does George visit the Changaram wetland?
    A. To enjoy the sunrise. B. To collect bird data.
    C. To protect the wetland. D. To observe bird habitats.
    25. What can we learn about eBird?
    A. It is aimed at training citizens into scientists.
    B. It is placed eighth among the country's apps.
    C. It selects species information for birdwatchers.
    D. It promotes the development of citizen science.
    26. The underlined word “boon” in paragraph3 probably means __________.
    A. target B. challenge C. benefit D. threat
    27. It can be inferred from paragraph 4 that _________.
    A. locust research started 3500 years ago in China
    B. the public seldom played a role in scientific research
    C. ordinary citizens have long been in ecological science
    D. the records of locust attacks failed to be used for science
    C
Microplastic pollution is increasing dramatically around the globe, according to a study of airborne (空气传播的) plastic particles (粒子).
People are already known to breathe, drink and eat microplastics, and research suggests that pollution levels will continue to rise rapidly. The researchers said that breathing in these particles can damage lung tissue and lead to serious diseases.
Professor Natalie Mahowald, at Cornell University in the US and part of the research team, said, “But maybe we could solve this before it becomes a huge problem, if we manage our plastics better, before they accumulate (积聚) in the environment and move around quickly everywhere.”
The research, published in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, examined airborne microplastics, which have been far less studied than plastic in oceans and rivers.
The team gathered more than 300 samples of airborne microplastics from 11 sites across the western US. These were the basis for atmospheric modeling that estimated (估计) the contribution from different sources, and was the first such study to do so.
They found that roads were the main factor in the western US, linked to about 85 percent of the microplastics in the air. These are likely to include particles from tires on vehicles, and plastics from litter that had been broken down.
The researchers enlarged their modeling work to a global level and this suggested that while roads are also likely to be the main driver of airborne plastics in Europe, South America and Australia, plastic particles blown up from fields may be a much bigger factor in Africa and Asia.
Professor Andreas Stohl of the University of Vienna’s Faculty of Earth Sciences, and not part of the study team, said, “The study confirms the global-scale nature of microplastic transport in the atmosphere and does a good job in highlighting highly relevant and concerning possibilities, but more measurement data is needed to get a better idea of the sources.”
    28. What did the researchers find out about airborne plastic pollution?
    A. Its impact varies on different continents.
    B. Public transportation takes responsibility for it.
    C. Its main driver differs across continents.
    D. Africa is suffering the most from the pollution.
    29. According to Professor Andreas Stohl, what is the next step of the study?
    A. To predict the possible damages of microplastics.
    B. To get more data to understand the sources of microplastics.
    C. To understand the nature of airborne plastic pollution globally.
    D. To improve the method of collecting samples of microplastics.
    30. What could be the best title for the text?
    A. Effects of microplastics on human health
    B. Possible solutions to microplastic pollution
    C. Microplastic pollution on the global scale
    D. Microplastic pollution rising rapidly in the air
    31. Which section of the newspaper may this article be found in?

We all know about the health benefits of swimming. It offers a great workout for the body---it builds perseverance, muscle strength, and cardiovascular (心血管的) fitness. 32 ? Well, many people are trying, based on evidence that it is good for us.
Cold-water swimming involves swimming in natural areas including ponds, rivers, and the sea. Jumping in gives a short sharp shock to the body, but many participants say they get used to it. 33 . And research has found it can have much bigger benefits than that for your body and mind. Besides being good exercise, spending time outdoors and in the water improves wellbeing.
34 . One man who suffered constant pain after surgery claimed he was cured by taking a dive in cold open water. And another swimmer, Sandria Simons, told the BBC, “The immersion of your body in cold, salt water, just feeling like you’re at one with nature if you like, just feels amazing.”
But what are people gaining from this chilly experience? Doctors say getting into cold water causes a stress response, but the more you do it, your reaction to stress is reduced. It’s also thought to have a strong anti-inflammatory (消炎的) effect. 35 . Some experts believe cold-water swimming helps “cross-adaptation”, where one form of stress prepares the body for another. For example, it also helps reduce the stress of exercising at high altitudes.
36 : approach it with great care, swim with a friend, and maybe start in the summer, when the water temperatures are higher!
    A. A cold swim wakes you up
    B. So, if you’re convinced that this is for you, take this advice
    C. Do you want to have a go at open water swimming

For me, it was normal to feel lost at the inter-camp track. Four camps of kids were ready to lead their teams to a blue ribbon and win the day. Not me. I was too little to be the leader and too skinny to be an athlete. I knew this by the time I was twelve, because my camp counselors(辅导员)and the other kids reminded me of it every chance they got. So when our camp needed a fourth runner in the two-mile race around the lake, I knew I was no one’s first choice.
I hid in the shade of a maple tree as they called the names of the runners, my body tensed as I heard a counselor call, “Fred! Where is Fred! He is in this race!” It was Barry. He spotted me under the tree. “Fred! We need a 12-year-old who hasn’t been in other events to run the two-mile!”
He gave me a push towards the starting line. Having no confidence and trying to save myself from the shame of taking the last place as four camps watched, I pleaded with him.
“But I don’t know the way around the lake!”
“You’re in. Just follow Bill!” Barry smiled.
Bill was my friend and the fastest runner in our camp. And then Barry said, “When you make it to the last stretch(最后一程)on the field, just throw your head back and run.”
At the starting line, I stood next to Bill and trembled.
“On your mark… Get set...” The gun cracked and sixteen of us took off. I stayed close on Bill’s heels, a little too close for Bill, I guess. He shouted at me, “Back off!”
I did. Two guys passed me, but I kept my eyes on Bill.
It was tiring. The distance was widening between Bill and me. We made the turn from the dusty road onto the muddy, wooded trail that would go around the lake back to the field. Through the trees, I saw Bill trip over a tree root and fall. A runner from another camp passed him.

W: It says 7: 00, as usual. But the ticket agent said that the time had been changed for this performance. It'll start an hour later.
M: Great! That gives us an extra hour for dinner.

    Text 3
M: You should really take the subway to work. Not only is it cheaper than driving your car, but it actually takes less time to get to work in the morning.
W: Yeah, but I just hate the feeling of crowded subway cars.

    Text 4
W: What are your plans for Thanksgiving, Todd?
M: Oh, it's a tradition in my family to go up to my grandpa's house in the woods and have a big dinner up there. About twenty of my relatives will be coming.
W: Wow, that sounds like so much fun! I think my parents and I are just going to my aunt's house to be with her.

    Text 5
W: Why is it so cold today? I thought the weather report said it was supposed to be sunny and warm...
M: Well, it is supposed to be nice later this afternoon. The fog should burn off by lunchtime, and this wind should die down, too.

    第二节:
    Text 6
W: Hi, Burt. I heard you're looking for a new job.
M: Yeah. I just had an interview yesterday.
W: Oh. How did it go?
M: I think it went well. They said they would make a decision by this Friday.
W: This Friday? That's pretty fast! Looks like they want to hire the person as quickly as possible.
M: Yeah! I think so, too.
W: What are your chances of getting that job, do you think?
M: I believe I have a very good chance. The director seemed to like me.
    W: Well, good luck, then.
    M: Thanks.

    Text 7
W: Excuse me. I seem to have lost my handbag.
M: OK. We'll have to fill out this lost property report. Here we go. So, it was a handbag? What color was it?
    W: Black and white.
M: And what do you think it's worth?
W: Well, it was a little pricey. I bought it last month for fifty dollars, and that was during a once-a-year sale, too.
M: What was in your bag?
W: A wallet with two hundred dollars cash, my car keys, and my driver's license. I'm sure I left it in the cafe on the sixth floor. That was the last place I remember having it.
    M: And when was that?
    W: About 2: 30
M: Where did you go when you left the cafe?
W: A record store. I wanted to buy some magazines there. Oh, please, sir, you've just gotta help me get it back!

    Text 8
W: Excuse me. May I have a look at that blouse?
M: Certainly! It’s beautiful. I can see that you have very good taste, ma’am! It really suits you!
W: Thanks. but it's not for me. It's for a friend. She asked me to buy one for her. What are you asking for this?
M: Well, madam, you're very lucky. We have a special offer going on for this week only! That blouse is normally 60 dollars, but we are offering a 10 percent discount!
W: Oh, dear! That’s still more than 50 dollars, and she asked me to spend only 40.
M: I see. Well, ma'am, just look at the quality of the silk!
W: It's very nice, but I think your prices are a little high. Look, I can get a blouse like this for half that price on the Internet.
M: But not of this quality, madam.
W: I’ll tell you what. I’m in a bit of hurry, so why don’t we split the difference? Can we say 47 dollars?
    M: 47! At that price, I'm losing money! So, let's say 50.
    W: 50? Hmm… Hey, look, there’s a button missing!
M: Are you sure? OK! Let’s make it 47, then!
    W: OK, I’ll take it.

    Text 9
W: Hey there, Mr. Connolly, What are you doing over there?
M: Oh, I'm just watering my tomatoes.
W: Wow, those look like they're going to be delicious! What else do you have planted back there?
M: I've got some beans over here, and it looks like my apples are just beginning to show, I planted some potatoes and onions, too, but those won't be ready until the winter.
W: Wow! I never knew you had such a green thumb!
M: Well, I'm just a beginner, actually. My wife was the real gardener. When she died, I thought that keeping our garden would be a great way to carry on her memory.
W: Yeah, she was also a great cook. I remember she used to make apple pies with the apples from your garden. I think the whole neighborhood looked forward to those pies every Christmas!
M: Yep, she sure was special. Say, weren't you and your husband talking about trying to start a garden in your backyard?
W: Yeah, but it's been... talk! We don't really know where to start. Maybe we should wait until next year.
M: Nonsense! There are plenty of things you can plant in late fall. I've got a bunch of seeds inside. Why don't you take some home?
W: Oh, I don't want to trouble you.
M: No, it's my pleasure, really! I don't have enough room here for everything.

    Text 10
Good evening, ladies and gentlemen. My name is Alice Brown. As you know, we hold a series of events during the school year on various cultural topics. I am happy there's such a large crowd of both students and professors here at our city art presentation this year. I see that almost every seat is taken. Tonight, we are lucky to have as our guest, a man of considerable fame in the world of music. He began to play the piano at the age of 5, and by the time he was 10, he was already composing and playing his own pieces. He's a graduate of the famous Julliard School in New York City. Our guest has spent the last 45 years of his very successful career touring the world and giving concerts. We are fortunate to have him here to share some of his experiences with us. He has had many adventures along the way - losing instruments, missing flight connections, no hotel reservations, locked concert balls. He's played for all of the well-known conductors, not only in North America but all over the world as well. The title of his talk is 40 Years on 4 Continents. Please join me in welcoming Mr. Daniel Robinson, one of the greatest pianists of our day.
