The earth is 4.6 billion years old. We humans have lived on the earth for only 35,000 years, but during this period, we have changed our planet a lot in many ways. Some things we have done are very good for the earth while others are bad.
The Amazon rainforest in South America, at seven million km², is the largest rainforest in the world. The forest is important for people all over the world because it produces a lot of oxygen, and also helps to cool the weather. But large areas of the rainforest are being cut down for wood—55% of the forest could be gone by 2030! The World Wildlife Federation(WWF) is helping to stop some areas of the rainforest from being cut down.
At 68,000 km², the Aral Sea was one of the largest lakes in the world before the 1960s. Then rivers were diverted(修改河道) and it has been getting smaller ever since. By 2007, it was only 10% of its original size and had divided into three separate lakes. Dust storms happen again and again and the villages sit on the edge of a huge desert(沙漠) with large ships stranded(搁浅) in its sand. A dam(水坝) has been built to try to bring back higher water levels in the North with some success.
In China, about 3,600 km² of grassland near the Gobi turns into desert every year. There are often storms that blow dust all the way to Beijing. The storms are getting worse each year and have a deep influence on farmers.
The goal of the Green Wall Project, started in 1978, is to increase forests in northern China from 5% to 15% in order to stop the desert from growing. The project faces many challenges. However, people must never give up on it.
Saving the disappearing nature needs everyone’s effort. Although each one of us may only do a little, together we can make a big difference. What can you do to protect the environment?
    28. Why must we save the Amazon according to the passage?
    A. It got the attention of WWF.

    A. Largest or biggest. B. Unusual and funny.
    C. First or earliest. D. Completely different.
    30. How can the Green Wall Project help to save the grassland?
    A. By improving farmers’ life.
    B. By preventing the desert growing.
    C. By keeping safe from dust storms.
    D. By building a dam to have higher water levels.
    31. Where is the passage probably from?
    A. A travel guide. B. A history book.
    C. A literary novel. D. A geography magazine.

Kids are natural inventors. They often create amazing things from simple ideas. Here are a few examples that might make you wonder, “Why didn’t I think of that?”
    Popsicles
Popsicles were invented by 11-year-old Frank Epperson in 1905. He forgot a drink of juice and left it with a stir stick in it outside on a cold night. The next day it was ice. Because of this he couldn’t drink it any more, but he could eat it. It tasted good! These ice sticks became popular among kids at school in summer because they were delicious and helped them stay cool. More than a hundred years passed, and popsicles are still one of the best summer treats!
    Earmuffs
When 15-year-old Chester Greenwood was ice-skating in Farmington, Maine, in 1873, his ears were so cold that he couldn’t bear it. Although he tried covering his head in a scarf, it was not comfortable. After some thinking, Greenwood made wire into two circles and asked his grandmother to sew fur on them. He then connected them with a steel headband and the first earmuffs were invented!
    Crayon holders
When 11-year-old Cassidy Goldstein needed crayons for a school project, she had a hard time because there were so many small or broken ones. She found some small clear plastic tubes at home. Although the tiny tubes were usually filled with water to keep flowers fresh, she found that they fit tightly around the crayons. She was now able to hold them easily. This is how she invented Crayon Holders.
    Wristies
While some kids just complain when snow gets in their mittens and their hands get wet, 10-year-old Kathryn Gregory decided to do something about it. She created the first pair of Wristies as she wanted to keep her wrists warm and dry. Wristies are long gloves with no fingers and they are worn under your mittens and coat. They can also be worn alone. They help you when you work in the cold because your hands stay warm while you use your fingers. She also started a business, with her parents’ help, which she still runs today.
All these inventions have one thing in common— ________. If they can do it, you can do it, too!
    32. In which order does the writer introduce the inventions?

    ① ② ③ ④
    A. ①③②④ B. ①③④② C. ③①②④ D. ③①④②
    33. What’s an example of Chester’s creative mind?
    A. He found some small clear plastic tubes to hold crayons easily.
    B. He used a steel headband to connect the two circles with fur on them.
    C. Though it was cold, he thought people would like popsicles in summer.
    D. He designed the long gloves with no fingers to keep wrists warm and dry.
    34. Which of the following can be put in the “________” in the last paragraph?
    A. the kids were quite helpful B. they were invented in winter
    C. the ideas came from science class D. the kids tried to solve problems in life
    35. How did the writer introduce each invention?
    A. By comparing or contrasting. B. By showing time.
    C. By giving an example. D. By showing cause and effect.
    D
Many people in Asia and around the world will celebrate the Lunar New Year starting on January 22. The new year is called the Year of the Rabbit in China and the Year of the Cat in Vietnam. How the cat replaced(替代) the rabbit in Vietnam is still the subject of debate.
Both countries follow a calendar based on 12 signs of a zodiac represented by 12 animals. No one knows exactly how the 12 animals came to be named. But ancient storytellers said the Jade Emperor, or the Buddha, organized a race across a river for all the animals in the world. The first 12 to reach the other side would appear in the animal signs
In the Chinese version of the story, the cat and the rat were riding across a river on an ox when the rat pushed the cat into the water. The rat won the race, turning the two animals into enemies. That is why cats have been hunting rats ever since.
In the Chinese story, the rabbit crossed the river by jumping on the tops of stones in the river. When the rabbit got there, no others were around, so it went off to the side and slept. By the time the rabbit woke up, three others had already arrived.
However, in the Vietnamese version—which did not have a rabbit—the cat could swim and ended up arriving fourth. The top twelve finishers which appear in the animal signs were rat, ox, tiger, cat (or rabbit), dragon, snake, horse, goat, monkey, rooster, dog, and pig.
Philippe Papin is a professor on Vietnamese history at the Ecole Pratique des Hautes Etudes in Paris. He told the Northwest Asian Weekly in 2011 that one possible explanation for replacing rabbit with cat might have something to do with language. He said in old Chinese, there is a little-used word tied to the sign of the rabbit that is pronounced like mǎo. The pronunciation is similar to mèo, the Vietnamese word for cat.
This year, a website, VNExpress, said many Vietnamese are buying new cat-themed cases for their mobile phones. And one of the top Google searches in Vietnam is “why there is no cat in the Chinese animal signs.”
    36. What is true about Chinese and Vietnam animal signs?
    A. Both include the Cat and the Rabbit.
    B. Each animal sign represents a lunar month.
    C. There are 12 animal signs appearing in a fixed order.
    D. People know exactly where the animal signs came from.
    37. What do “the two animals” refer to(指的是)?
    A. The rat and the ox. B. The cat and the rat.
    C. The rabbit and the ox. D. The cat and the rabbit.
    38. Why did the cat replace the rabbit in Vietnam animal signs most probably?
    A. It was decided by a professor.
    B. The cat was better at swimming.
    C. The rabbit arrived fourth in the race across a river.
    D. The Chinese sign mǎo sounds like the Vietnamese word mèo.
    39. What can we learn from the last paragraph?
    A. Vietnamese like cats more than the other animals.
    B. Buying new cases for mobile phones is a tradition in Vietnam.
    C. The Lunar New Year is celebrated only in China and Vietnam.
    D. More and more people are interested in cultural difference.
    40. What’s the best title for the article?
    A. Story about Chinese animal signs B. Race between the Cat and the Rabbit
    C. Year of the Cat or Year of the Rabbit D. Differences between China and Vietnam

They asked Katherine Johnson for the moon, and she gave it to them. With little more than a pencil, a rule and one of the finest mathematical minds in the country, Mrs. Johnson, who died at 103, worked out the exact track that would let Apollo 11 land on the moon in 1969 and, after Neil Armstrong’s history—making moonwalk, let it come back to Earth.
Yet throughout Mrs. Johnson’s 33 years in NASA and for a period of ten years afterwards, almost no one knew her name.
Born in White Sulphur Springs, West Virginia, in 1918, Mrs. Johnson showed great talent for numbers at an early age which made her ahead several grades in school. By 13, she went to the high school. At 18, she entered the college and graduated with highest grades in 1937.
Mrs. Johnson was one of several hundred strictly educated, with strong ability yet largely unknown women who, well before the modern feminist movement(女权运动), worked as NASA mathematicians. But it was not only her sex that kept her long unimportant. For some years at midcentury, the black women were influenced by a double segregation(隔离): They were kept separate from the much large group of white women who in turn were segregated from the agency’s male mathematicians and engineers.
Mrs. Johnson broke barriers(屏障) at NASA. In old age, Mrs. Johnson became the most celebrated of black women who served as mathematicians for the space agency. Their story was told in the 2016 Hollywood film Hidden Figures, which was nominated for three Oscars, including best picture.
In 2017, NASA named a building after her. That year, the Washington Post described her as “the most high-profile of the computers”—“computers” being the term at first used to describe Mrs. Johnson and her workmates, much as “typewriters” were used in the 19th century to represent professional typists.
She “helped our nation enlarge the frontiers of space,” NASA’s administrator, Jim Bridenstine, said in a statement, “even as she made huge steps that also opened doors for women and people of colour to explore space.”
As Mrs. Johnson herself liked saying, her term at Langley—from 1953 until her retirement in 1986—was “a time when computers wore skirts.”

    Dear Eric,
I’m glad to receive your email. Now, I’m writing to tell you about my thoughts.
First, it’s brave of you to try out for the performance during your drama festival.
Although you haven’t got the role you wanted, it’s still a good chance for you to improve your acting skills and confidence. In fact, the role without any dialogue may be more challenging because you will have to use more body languages to express yourself. So don’t give up the chance.
What’s more, practice hard in order to have a good performance. Practice makes perfect.
Wish you good luck and look forward to your wonderful performance!
    Yours,
    Li Hua
