Mitsuhiro Iwamoto is a blind person who sailed non-stop across the Pacific Ocean. One of Mr. Iwamoto’s friends says, “He feels the waves and he can sense the speed and angle of the winds to adjust the sails properly. ” The only thing Mr. Iwamoto can’t do is see. So he teamed up with Doug Smith.

In 2013, Mr. Iwamoto tried to sail across the Pacific. But after only five days at sea, his boat was hit by a whale. The boat sank, and he spent 11 hours floating in the sea in a life raft before he was rescued. When Mr. Smith learned the story of Mr. Iwamoto’s defeat during his first attempt at crossing the Pacific, it had a big effect on him. He decided to join the trip not just to prove that they could do it, but also to collect funds for a public welfare foundation that bought medical insurance for poor children. He got in touch with Mr. Iwamoto. The two realized that they would make a good team.

It took a lot of courage to make a second attempt after the failure. But Mr. Iwamoto was determined. He began to train for the trip. He skied, ran half-marathons and marathons, and took part in triathlons(races with swimming, biking, and running). Mr. Smith bought a 12-meter sailboat from local people. They took drinking water and enough food for 60 days. The sailboat had solar panels to keep the GPS and the satellite phone charged.

On February 24, Mr. Iwamoto set out from San Diego, California on their 14,000-kilometer trip. Finally, around 9 a. m. on April 20 — after sailing non-stop for 55 days, the two arrived in Iwaka, Fukushima Prefecture, Japan, “People often say that the physical illness can’t stop a person from making a difference, but I have to walk the walk to prove it, ” Mr. Iwamoto said.

Parents or guardian should not use violence as a way to teach children lessons, a draft law said on Wednesday.

The draft family education law also said they should not discriminate against children based on their gender or physical condition or force, trick or use minors (未成年人) to violate laws, regulations or social morality.

Parents and guardians shoulder the primary responsibility to educate children, while the government, schools and society should “offer support for family education”, the draft said, adding that the country should step in when necessary.

The law-enforcing departments should admonish parents or ask them to improve family education when children have received administrative punishment from the police or committed minor crimes, it said.

Courts could remove guardianship from parents if law enforcement (执法) authorities find they have violated the rights and interests of minors and have refused to correct their behavior. The police will be able to fine parents who refuse to make corrections up to 1,000 yuan( $ 155) or detain them for up to five days, according to the draft.

Schools should officially tell parents when students have seriously violated regulations or laws and offer parents guidance in educating children. When parents refuse to fulfill their responsibilities, schools should inform the local committee or the parents’ employers, it said.

He Yiting, a member of the NPC’s Social Development Affairs Committee said that family education, as the beginning of a child’s education, is not only closely associated with the lifelong development of children and family well-being, but also concerns national development and social stability.

However, many parents only value children’s academic performance and physical well-being and ignore their moral development and psychological health, he said when reporting to the NPC Standing Committee.

There are also parents who do not know how to educate their children and to motivate children to improve children’s academic performance, some even turn to physical abuse, leading to extreme cases of injury, he said.

It’s likely that you don’t think you have invited a spy into your home when setting up a new TV. But new Samsung, LG and Vizio smart TVs can record and share everything that is viewed, whether it’s a broadcast or something streaming from the Internet. And some smart TVs can even track what DVD you’re watching.

Your viewing habits are valuable information for marketers who might want to use the information to introduce new shows or add extra content about some products to the shows you are already watching. The ads are primarily pop-ups like the ones you see on your computer.

You might not realize that you allowed that data collection when you agreed to the long privacy policy during setup; with Samsung, it is 47 screens of text. LG and Vizio also ask you to sign away your privacy in thousands of words in fine print.

When Consumer Reports sent an email to the manufacturers to ask how they are using the technology, representatives for Samsung and Vizio didn’t make any comment. An LG representative said that the company isn’t using any data to send personalized ads and has no plans to do so. But Consumer Reports said that could change at any time.

You might think, “Well, why don’t I just turn those marketing features off?” It’s not always so easy. To stop manufacturers' tracking, you have to fight your way through menu settings. On an LG set, go to “settings”, then “options”, then “Live plus”, click “off”, and then close. With Vizio, it’s a voyage through three menus to turn off the box “Smart Interactivity”. With Samsung, it’s a similar trip to find the box “SyncPlus and Marketing” to disable it.

Consumer Reports said that disabling the marketing feature may cause you to lose offers of extra scenes which are related to the shows you’re watching. But maybe that's a small price to pay for knowing that what you’re watching remains private.
