A code enforcement officer for the village of Frankfort, Illinois, Chris Dempsey heard his coworker Jack Dwyer mention that his cousin Krueger had just been diagnosed with kidney disease. She was only 25, Dwyer said, but she wouldn't survive much longer unless she could secure a kidney transplant from a live donor.

“If someone in my family were in Krueger's situation, I would want somebody to step up and help me," says Dempsey. So he managed to contact the transplant coordinator and started the testing to determine whether his kidney was a match. Fortunately, they were positive and Dempsey was approved to give up one of his kidneys to save Krueger's life.

A few days later, over lunch at a Mexican restaurant, Dempsey and Krueger met to discuss the operation, but they ended up talking about much more, especially their families and careers. As Dempsey remembers it, "She didn't look like a person who was sick. She was beautiful, and she had this smile on her face the entire time. It was amazing how high her spirits were." In the following weeks, Dempsey and Krueger saw a lot of each other. Now and then, they went out for dinner. Dempsey soon found himself thinking about Krueger constantly. He wondered whether the feeling was mutual.

On March 16, 2015, the day of the transplant, Dempsey and Krueger sat side by side in hospital beds, surrounded by their families. The surgery was a success. They were both released from the hospital within a month. Shortly after the surgery, Krueger invited Dempsey to watch a movie at her house. Health chiefs are to use artificial intelligence to screen and treat people at risk of hepatitis C (丙型肝炎) under plans to wipe out the life-threatening disease by 2030.

The NHS scheme, due to start within weeks in England, aims to identify thousands of patients unaware that they have the virus so that treatment can be given before it is too late. Staff will use Al to comb through patient health records and look for significant risk factors, such as historical blood transfusions or an HIV diagnosis. Hepatitis C often has no noticeable symptoms until the liver is severely damaged, which means the infected party may not know they are living with a potential killer. It can be cured with modern treatments.

Anyone identified by the AI software will be invited for a consultation by their GP and, if necessary, will undergo further screening for hepatitis C, Patients who test positive for the virus-which can be caught from contact with the blood of an infected person, such as by sharing a needle一will be offered antiviral medicines after NHS England struck a deal with three drug companies. Professor Graham Foster, the national clinical chairman for NHS England's hepatitis C removal programmes, described the scheme as “a significant step forward" to eliminate the virus.

Hepatitis C deaths fell by 35 per cent in the five years to 2020, from 482 to 314, according to the latest data from the UK Health Security Agency. New cases also fell from 129,000 in 2015 to 81 ,000 in 2020. The fall in deaths was largely thanks to earlier detection of the virus and improved access to treatments, health experts said.

The rollout of this screening programme is therefore another crucial step towards achieving removal.

Smartphones are everywhere, which means most of us effectively carry around in our pockets billions of web pages, as well as a calendar, calculator, address book and as electronic reminders for upcoming tasks, events or appointments that must not be missed or forgotten. Many users fear that they may come to suffer from “digital dementia", finding their ability to keep information worsens as they increasingly rely on devices as a form of “external memory".

However, a study has found the opposite could be true. Researchers took 158 volunteers aged between 18 and 71 and showed them up to 12 numbered circles on a screen. Some of the circles which were classed as high value, low value and zero value would briefly appear pink or blue before fading Volunteers had to drag them to either the pink side or the blue side of the screen later. They had to remember which side of the screen to drag the circles to in order to earn points. In some of the experiments they had to rely on their own memories. In others, they could set an electronic reminder on a device.

Researchers found subjects tended to use digital devices to store information about which were the high-value circles. This led to an 18 per cent increase in accuracy when placing these circles. They also found, to their surprise, using electronic reminders for high-value circles led to a 27 percent increase in accuracy when telling from memory between the low and zero-value circles, even when no electronic reminders had been set for these.

The study, published in the Journal of Experimental Psychology; General, shows that external memory tools work. Far from causing digital dementia, using an external memory device can even improve our memory for information that we never saved electronically. Dr Sam Gilbert, from UCL's Institute of Cognitive Neuroscience, said: “When people had to remember by themselves, they used their memory capacity to remember the most important information. But when they could use the device, they saved high importance information into the device and used their own memory for less important information instead."

So, it is perfectly healthy to rely on your smartphone to keep track of important information. But be sure not to lose your device. Your brain docs not keep its own backup of the things you make note of digitally.
