When the subject of friendship comes up in a conversation, you often hear some form of this complaint: It is hard to make friends as an adult. And if, for whatever reason, you do not ___1___ your childhood or college friends, you can end up in your 30s (or 40s, or 50s) knowing a lot of people, but being close to very few of them.
It is not hard to understand why. When you are overworked and overwhelmed, the ___2___ to have dinner with a friend versus turning on Netflix and eating pizza with your spouse (伴侣) can be hard to come by. But the research is clear: Close friendships are ___3___ to one’s best health and well-being.
“We’re ___4___ creatures,” said Serena Chen, a professor of psychology at the University of California, Berkeley. “When we’re intimate (亲密的) with another person, we can experience ___5___ mental and physical reactions in our body, mind and heart.”
But what exactly does ___6___ mean?
Popular culture is filled with enviable examples: the friend who will take a bullet for you; the friend who you can call in the middle of the night and always count on to be there for you, regardless of the ___7___; the friend with whom you can share anything.
___8___ close friendships (unsurprisingly) do not need to be quite so extreme. “The key to a close friendship is intimacy (亲密), and a big part of intimacy is being able to be fully yourself and be seen and ___9___ by others,” Dr. Chen said.
Reciprocation (相互性) is also a key element to the ____10____ of intimacy. That explains why all the “likes” and compliments from your social media friends for something you share online—though they may feel good—don’t necessarily create intimacy because there is no ____11____ of ideas and feelings, explained Dr. Chen.
Now you may be left wondering, if close friendships really are that vital to the well-being of humans, wouldn’t it make more sense for us to be ____12____ skilled at making them? One would tend to think so, but it turns out that the opposite may be true: Close friendships are so important to us ____13____ they are so difficult to form.
According to John Cacioppo, the late social neuroscientist (神经学家) who specialized in the study of loneliness, humans would have evolved a built-in bias (偏见) against easily making friends because ____14____ an enemy would have been more important than making a friend. “If I make a mistake and detect a person as an enemy who turns out to be a friend, that’s O.K.—I don’t make the friend as fast, but I ____15____ .”
Dr. Capiocco said in a 2017 interview with The Atlantic. “But if I mistakenly detect someone as a friend when they’re in fact a dangerous enemy, that can cost me my life. Over evolution, we’ve been shaped to have this bias.”

Telescope Searching for Space Treasure Unearths Giant Planet
A giant planet shrouded(遮盖)in clouds, in orbit(轨道)around a star 385 light years from our sun, has been captured by the James Webb Space Telescope in images described as a “____1____ moment for astronomy.”
In observations led by a British astronomer, the pioneering telescope focused on a “gas giant” planet called HIP65426b. It captured images in infrared light(红外光), which allows astronomers to more ____2____ calculate the mass and temperature of “exoplanets”—the ____3____ for planets in orbit around other stars. It should ultimately allow them to detect clouds moving across their surface, ____4____ alien weather patterns on worlds hundreds of light years from our solar system. The images show the planet as “blobs(斑点) of light” in blue, purple, yellow and  red hues under various infrared wavelengths.
The planet is up to 12 times bigger than Jupiter and orbits about 100 times farther from its host star compared with the Earth’s distance from the sun, making it ____5____ for astronomers to separate the planet from its star when attempting to capture images of it. The planet is only 15 to 20 million years old, a fraction of the ____6____ of the Earth, which is 4.5 billion years old. Like Jupiter and Saturn, it has “no rocky surface and could not be ____7____,” NASA said.
The ____8____ of an exoplanet is usually detected when the light from a distant star appears to become less ____9____ at regular intervals, suggesting that a planet is passing across its face once per orbit like a tiny partial eclipse(日偏食). It is extremely difficult to capture a direct image of an exoplanet _____10_____ they are thousands of times fainter than the stars they orbit.
James Webb used an instrument called a coronagraph to _____11_____ light from HiP65426b’ s host star, which lies in the Centaurus constellation(半人马座), “Obtaining this image felt like _____12_____ space treasure,” said Aarynn Carter, a researcher at the University of California. “At first, all I could see was light from the star, but with careful image processing, I was able to remove that light and uncover the planet.”
Analysis suggests that the planet has a red hue and a temperature of 1,300℃. The images could give a clue as to how Jupiter and Saturn looked in their _____13_____ more than four billion years ago.
NASA said, “Webb’s view, at longer infrared wavelengths, shows new details that ground—based telescopes would not be able to detect _____14_____ the intrinsic(本身的)infrared glow of Earth’s atmosphere.”
The telescope has already been used to analyze the _____15_____ make—up of the atmosphere on another exoplanet, WASP—39b, detecting carbon dioxide by analyzing the spectrum(光谱) of light passing through its clouds.

In interviews, famous people often say that the key to becoming both happy and successful is to “do what you love.” But mastering a skill, even one that you deeply love, requires a huge amount of hard work
Anyone who wants to master a skill must run through the ___1___of practice, critical feedback, alteration, and improvement over and over. Some people seem able to concentrate on practicing an activity like this for years and ___2___their gradual improvement. Yet others find it ___3___to do this kind of focused, time—consuming work. Why?
The ___4___may turn on the ability to enter into a state of “flow”, the feeling of being completely involved in what you are doing. Flow states can happen in the course of any activity, and they are most common when a task has well—defined goals and is at a(n) ___5___skill level, and where the individual is able to ___6___their performance to clear and immediate feedback.
Flow states turn the boring practice into an autotelic activity that is, one that can be enjoyed for its own sake, rather than as a means to an end or for obtaining some ___7___reward. Then how can we get into a flow state for an activity that we want to master, so that we enjoy both the ___8___and the rewards?
Those who most ___9___entered into flow states had an “autotelic personality”—a quality to seek out challenges and get into a state of flow. While those without such a personality see ____10____autotelic individuals see opportunities to build skills. Autotelic individuals are receptive, open to new challenges and also persistent. Such people, with an ability to focus on tasks rather than ____11____, have a great advantage over others in developing their inborn abilities.
____12____, for those of us who aren’t necessarily blessed with an autotelic personality, there is evidence that flow states can be promoted by environmental factors. In particular, the learning framework advocated by Montessori schools seems to encourage flow states. In Montessori schools, learning comes through discovery rather than direct instruction and students are encouraged to develop individual interests.

ChatGPT, an artificial intelligence-driven chatbot (聊天机器人) programme that responds to user prompts, has dominated social networks in recent weeks. Its ____1____ is such that within days of its launch, OpenAI, the artificial intelligence company behind the chatbot, announced that 1 million people had logged on. In comparison, Facebook and Spotify took months to attract that level of ____2____. The attraction is obvious: ChatGPT can generate jokes, essays and computer code from a short writing prompt.
There’s nothing ____3____ in software that produces fluent and logical writing. ChatGPT’s predecessor, the Generative Pretrained Transformer 3 (GPT-3), could do that too. Both were trained on an unimaginably large amount of data to answer questions in a ____4____ way. But ChatGPT has been fine-tuned by being fed the data on human “conversations”, which significantly ____5____ the truthfulness and informativeness of its answers.
____6____, ChatGPT still produces answers that seem reasonable but are incorrect or nonsensical. Even the bot itself says, “My responses are not intended to be taken as ____7____.” This might be a big problem on the Internet, as many web platforms ____8____ the capability to protect themselves against a flood of AI-generated content. Such websites as Stack Overflow, where users can find answers to programming-related questions, had to ban ChatGPT-produced posts, as its human moderators (管理员) could not deal with the ____9____ of believable but wrong replies. It is _____10_____ to give out tools that could be used to mass produce fake news and messages.
Letting loose ChatGPT raises the question of whether content produced by it can be truly trusted. A human author is _____11_____ their work in a way AI is not. Artificial intelligence is not artificial _____12_____: ChatGPT does not know what it is doing; it is unable to say how or why it produced a response; it has no grasp of human experience, and cannot tell if it is _____13_____. While OpenAI has safeguards to refuse inappropriate requests, such as to tell users how to commit crimes, these can be bypassed. AI’s potential for harm should not be _____14_____. In the wrong hands, it could be a weapon of mass destruction.
No one knows what will happen to such technologies if the software engineers of the future will themselves be software programs. “Human supervision and _____15_____ are required,” OpenAI’s researchers have warned.
