Here’s a look at the some new events added to the Olympic program for the Beijing Games, which began with the Opening Ceremony on Feb. 4, 2022.

    Aerials-Mixed Team Event

Individual men’s and women’s aerials (空中技巧) events have been part of the Olympic program since the Lillehammer Games in 1994, with skiers launching themselves straight in the air and completing a dizzy array of tricks before landing back on a snowy slope. In mixed team aerials, each country enters three skiers — it can be two men and a woman, or two women and a man. The scores are added together for the final.

    Freestyle Skiing-Big Air (Men’s and Women’s)

Big air snowboarding made its Olympic debut (初次登场) in 2018. The skiing event debuting in 2022 follows the same basic concept, with skiers flying off a huge slope and performing the biggest trick they can. One athlete to watch for is 2018 Olympian Alex Hall, who finished fourth when the event made its world championships debut in 2019.

    Short Track Speedskating-Mixed Team Relay

The mixed team relay is a 2,000-meter race in which two women and two men from a country combine to cover 18 laps. Each skater races twice, with the order going woman - woman - man - man - woman - woman - man - man. The mixed relay has been part of the world cup series since the 2018-19 season.

    Ski Jumping-Mixed Team Event

The mixed team event trend continues here, this time with teams consisting of two men and two women from each country. The competition, which takes place on the normal hill, was first held at the world cup level in 2012, and it’s been part of the world championships since 2013.

21What is the final point of each country’s skiers in Aerials-Mixed Team Event?

AThe final try of the last athlete. BThe total score of the three skiers.

CThe added result of two members. DThe highest score in each country’s team.

    22What is Alex Hall?

AA famous world athlete in Freestyle Skiing.

BAn experienced athlete in Ski Jumping.

CA player in Aerials-Mixed Team Event.

DA famous coach on Short Track Speedskating.

23What do the last two events have in common?

AThey entered the world cup in 2018.

BThey run with the same order of woman and man.

CThey have the same requirements of team members.

DThey need to cover a long distance in the competition.

Nearly two years after the COVID-19 outbreak, China has granted approval to its first antibody combination therapy (治疗) for COVID-19 treatment, adding a tool to the world’s fight against the disease.

A team from Tsinghua University, along with the Shenzhen People’s Hospital, has accomplished the task in 20 months. It would usually take 10 years. “It can reduce the rate of hospitalization (住院治疗) and death by 80 percent,” said Zhang Linqi, leader of the research team.

The new antibody drug is immediately effective after being used. Moreover, the therapy can protect people, especially those whose physical condition doesn’t allow vaccination (接种疫苗), from becoming infected by COVID-19 for around 9 to 12 months, said Zhang.

How does it work? When a virus infects a cell, it relies on an important type of protein: the spike proteins (棘突蛋白) on its surface. The spike proteins serve as a key to unlocking a cell. If a virus cannot enter a cell, it will disappear immediately. The job of our antibodies is to block the virus from entering cells. So its target is very precise. In addition, thanks to the coordination between the two antibodies, it is highly efficient in preventing the virus, according to Zhang. The qualities of the new drug make it especially useful for high-risk groups, such as frontline medical workers and people not suitable for vaccination due to various underlying health problems.

The new drug is expected to come to the market soon, but it’s not cheap. That’s because of limited production. Noting that China has used science and technology to fight COVID-19 since the beginning of the outbreak, Zhang said, “Science is the key to solving the issue. Science has shown its power in all sectors, from medical treatment, medicine and vaccine development to prevention and control measures.”

24What can we know about the new drug according to paragraph 1 and paragraph 2?

AIt’s the only way to treat COVID-19.

BIt dramatically improves the survival rate of patients.

CIt takes researchers 10 years to develop the new drug.

DIt was developed by the team from one of China’s top universities.

25Which statement does the author probably agree with?

AOnly medical workers can take this drug.

BAntibodies stop spike proteins entering a cell.

CThe new medicine takes effect after a period of use.

DThe new drug can protect people from infection for life.

26Who are best suited for the drug according to the passage?

ADoctors and nurses. BThe elderly and children.

CPeople without vaccination. DPatients and their family members.

27What can be inferred from the last paragraph?

AThe drug will be readily available.

BThe new drug has been put into use.

CZhang had a high regard for the power of science.

DChina is the first country to use technology to fight disease.

    C

Beijing (AP) Three Chinese astronauts returned to Earth on Saturday after six months aboard their country’s newest orbital station in the longest crewed mission to date for China’s ambitious space program.

The Shenzhou 13 space capsule landed in the Gobi desert in the norther region of Inner Mongolia, shown live on CCTV. During the mission, astronaut Wang Yaping carried out the first spacewalk by a Chinese woman. Wang and crew mates Zhai Zhigang and Ye Guangfu beamed (发送) back physics lessons for high school students. China launched its first astronaut into space in 2003 and landed robot rovers on the moon in 2013 and on Mars last year. Officials have discussed a possible crewed mission to the moon.

On Saturday, CCTV showed images from inside the capsule as it traveled at 200 meters per second over Africa before entering the atmosphere. The trio (三人组) were the second crew aboard Tiangong, or Heavenly Palace. Its core module, Tianhe, was launched in April 2021. Plans call for completing construction this year by adding two more modules. Authorities have yet to announce a date for launching the next Tiangng crew.

China Was the hid nation to launch an astronaut into space on its own after the former Soviet Union and the United States. Tiangong is China’s third space station following predecessors (前身) launched in 2011 and 2016. The government announced in 2020 that China's first reusable spacecraft had landed following a test flight.

On Tuesday, President Xi visited the launch site in Wenchang on the southern island of Hainan from which the Tianhe module was fired into orbit. “Persist in pursuing the frontiers of world aerospace development and the major strategic needs of national aerospace,” President Xi told staff at the site, all of them in military uniform.

How many things can you see in the night sky? A lot! On a clear night you might see the Moon, some planets, and thousands of stars.

But scientists believe there are some things in the sky that we will never see. We won’t see them with the biggest telescope (望远镜) in the world, on the clearest night of the year. That’s because they are invisible (看不见的). They’re the mysterious dead stars called black holes.

You might find it hard to imagine that stars die. After all, our Sun is a star. Year after year we see up in the sky, burning brightly, giving us heat and light. The Sun certainly doesn’t seem to be getting old or weak. But stars do burn out and die after billions of years.

As a star’s gases burn, they give off light and heat. But when the gases run out, the star stops burning and begins to die.

As the star cools, the outer parts of the star pull in toward the center. The star is squashed (挤压) into a smaller and smaller ball. If the star was very small, the star ends up as a cold, dark ball. If the star was very big, it keeps being squashed inward until it’s packed together tighter (紧的) than anything in the universe.

Imagine if the Earth collapsed until it was the size of a tiny marble (玻璃球). That’s how tightly this dead star, a black hole, is packed. What pulls the star in toward its center with such power? It is the same force that pulls you down when you jump – the force call gravity. A black hole is so tightly packed that its gravity absorbs everything – even light. The light from a black hole can never come back to your eyes. That’s why you see nothing but blackness.

So the next time you look up at the night sky, remember: there’s more in the sky than meets the eye! Scattered (散落) in the silent darkness are black holes – the great mystery of space.

32What might happen after a star dies?

AThe star might become a black hole. BThe Earth might be hit by the star.

CThe sky might become much darker. DThe gravity might totally disappear.

33What causes a star to die?

AIts gases run out. BIt hits other stars.

CIt gets too hot. DIts light fades away.

34What does the underlined word “collapsed” in paragraph 6 probably mean?

ARolled. BRan. CFell inward. DSpread out.

35Why are people unable to see light from a black hole?

AMost black holes are too far away. BWe don’t have a powerful enough telescope.

CBlack holes can travel as fast as light. DLight can not escape a black hole’s gravity.

Forgiving doesn’t mean saying the pain didn’t matter or what the other person said or did was OK. It doesn’t mean forgetting what happened. It means letting go of your need for an apology. It means making peace with past hurt and pain. It means choosing to move on. All of this is easy to say, hard to do. ____36____

Take your feelings seriously. Cry, feel sad, throw thigs hard, or write angry passages in your diary to get rid of some of the stress. Talk with trusted friends or family to ask for advice to help find solutions to your problems. ____37____ But suffering these feelings over time does you great harm.

Make a difference in your life. I’ve seen that many miss the opportunity for getting back a good relationship with someone else because they just wait for the apology that may never come. ____39____ Although you may mainly blame the other person, it’s important to forgive yourself with positive self-talk. Feel certain that you can learn from this and move on. Tell yourself that you will survive this pain and that life will get better.

Anne would take part in a swimming competition the next morning and she was too nervous to sleep well. She tossed and turned all night.

She was no stranger to competition. In fact, she loved it. Anne was very athletic and her strong will and diligent spirit brought her respect and love. She was not only part of a swim team, but a soccer team, as well. Before she took up swimming, she had been playing soccer. She got along well with her teammates in the soccer team, and they usually encouraged each other before games. Just two days before the swimming competition, she had a regular soccer practice. Her soccer teammates noticed her anxiety and asked her about it. She lowered her head, murmuring. “I’ll take a swimming competition, and this particular competition was important. I had made it all the way to the finals and didn’t want to let my teammates down.” One of her soccer teammates patted her shoulder, “Just be yourself?” When Anne walked away, her soccer teammates looked at her back. They just couldn’t let it go.

The morning finally came. Having slept so poorly, Anne was not at all ready for the day. She was terribly anxious about the competition, so much so that she couldn’t even eat breakfast. It felt as though her stomach was doing somersaults (翻腾).

Anne’s mother looked concerned. “You have to eat something,” she said. “It’s important to keep your strength up.”

“I know, I’m just not hungry this morning,” Anne replied, picking at her eggs with a fork. All she could think about was facing the competition. What if she performed poorly? What if she disappointed her coach and teammates? She wouldn’t be able to forgive herself.

“Honey, drink the milk and have some bread. I’ll wait for you in the car. We just have 10 minutes left.” Hearing that, Anne had a quick breakfast, grabbed her gym bag and got into the car.

Half an hour later, she got to the athletic club where the swim meet was being held. She went to the locker room to prepare for the competition, but when she opened her gym bag, she was quite surprised.

    注意:

    1. 续写部分分为两段,每段的开头语已为你写好;

    Paragraph 2:

She saw her soccer uniform and realized she had grabbed the wrong bag.
