Rachel’s artwork had been accepted into an internationally famous art exhibition after she had experienced many years of rejection and lack of recognition. After receiving the news, I could hardly contain myself and decided to celebrate it with her immediately. I took my handbag quickly and raced to the garage. Then I pulled the car door open, jumped into the driver’s seat, and shut the car door. I started the car and pedaled (踩踏板) to the metal. I was eager to go!
I was backing up, backing up when I heard and felt a BOOM! I looked around and realized that I didn’t press the button to open the garage doors first and blew out the garage door panels (嵌板)! I jumped out of the car and felt relieved to discover that I was able to push the panels back into the garage doors so they looked normal. I covered up the scene, got back into my car, and left for Rachel’s home.
That evening, my teenage son had been playing a game of solo catch to which, in the past, I wouldn’t agree, for the ball made some ugly dents (凹痕) on the garage doors. But this time when he threw the ball against one of the garage doors, he didn’t just dent the door—he demolished it!
He called me, “Mom, I’m so sorry. I know you told me not to play ball against the garage doors. I didn’t think I would break them, though.” Though I had wanted to let my son take the blame to teach him a lesson, I couldn’t do it. Besides, he wasn’t the only one who Iearned a lesson that day.

A.She could repair the door all by herself. B.She pressed the button and opened the door.
C.She was lucky not to knock into the door. D.She could make the door appear normal.
26.What does the underlined word “demolished” probably mean in paragraph 3?
    A.Painted. B.Repaired. C.Destroyed. D.Removed.
27.What is the best title for the text?

With the weather getting hot, bites caused by mosquitoes not only annoy people, but can result in many infectious diseases. Even when people wear long clothes, mosquitoes' complex biting methods enables them to bite some of them through.
It would be great if clothing could be used to completely prevent people from getting bitten. Researchers tested graphene (石墨烯),a material that is incredibly thin but really strong, in order to find out if it can make clothing resistant to mosquitoes.
In the lab experiment, volunteers exposed a small patch of skin on their arm or hand to roughly 100 mosquitoes for five minutes at a time. Researchers tested three different situations: volunteers wearing no protection, wearing cheesecloth (薄莎棉布), or wearing cheesecloth plus a thin graphene layer under it. A video camera was then used to record and quantify mosquitoes' behavior, including whether they landed on the skin, how long they stayed there, and whether they began to suck blood. The number of bites each volunteer got was also calculated based on how many swellings developed on their skin afterward. Finally, researchers dropped a little water or sweat on top of the graphene layer and studied the consequence.
As a result, the number of mosquito bites on naked skin was the highest, about 16 on average; skin only protected by cheesecloth got the second, approximately 10 per five minutes' exposure. The exciting finding was that there was no swelling developing on skin covered by the thin graphene layer under cheesecloth, which means the material is effective at preventing mosquito bites. The mosquitoes landed on skin totally uncovered or covered in cheesecloth about 23 times on average, and stayed for one to two minutes. Comparatively, the mosquitoes landed on skin covered in the graphene layer fewer than10 times, and the length of their stay was much shorter. Besides, water or sweat can ruin the graphene layer, which allows mosquitoes to bite through it. But fortunately, the number of mosquito bites in either dry or wet conditions can be lowered as long as the graphene material is improved to a certain extent.
    28. Why did researchers conduct the experiment?
    A. To test graphene's effectiveness in preventing mosquito bites.
    B. To find a substance to prevent mosquito bites.
    C. To find a solution to stop infectious diseases.
    D. To record the behavior of mosquitoes.
    29. What was the problem when water or sweat was applied to graphene?
    A. lt had no effect on graphene. B. It made graphene useless
    C. It improved graphene a little. D. It slightly affected graphene.
    30. In which way did researchers draw a conclusion?
    A. By analyzing the reasons. B. By comparing the statistics.
    C. By classifying three situations. D. By recording mosquitoes' behavior.
31.Which of the following shows how the text is developed?
    A. Cause--- effect. B. Opinion--- fact.
    C. Assumption--- conclusion. D. Phenomenon---evaluation.
    D
In order to help discover spoilage(变质)and reduce food waste for supermarkets and consumers, researchers have developed new low-cost, smart phone-linked, eco-friendly spoilage sensors for meat and fish packaging.
One in three UK consumers throw away food just because it reaches the use-by date(保存期),but 60% (4.2 million tonnes) of the £12.5 billion-worth of food we throw away each year is safe to eat.
The researchers, whose findings were published in ACS Sensors, say the sensors could also eventually replace the use-by date-a widely used indicator of being fresh and eatable.
The sensors cost two US cents each to make. Known as "paper-based electrical gas sensors(PEGS)", they detect spoilage gases like ammonia (a poisonous gas with a strong unpleasant smell) in meat and fish products. The information provided by the electronic nose is received by a smart phone, and then you can know whether the food is fresh and safe to eat.
The Imperial College London researchers who developed PEGS made the sensors by printing carbon electrodes(电极)onto a special type of paper. The materials are eco-friendly and harmless, so they don't damage the environment and are safe to use in food packaging. The sensors, combined with a tiny electronic system, then inform nearby mobile devices, which identify and understand the data about spoilage gases.
Lead author Dr Firat Guder, of Imperial's Department of Bioengineering, said"Although they're designed to keep us safe, use-by dates can lead to eatable food being thrown away. They don't always reflect its actual freshness. In fact, people often get sick from foodborne diseases due to poor storage, even when an item is within its use-by date. These sensors are cheap enough so we hope to see supermarkets using them within three years. Our goal is to use PEGS in food packaging to reduce unnecessary food waste."
The authors hope that PEGS could have applications beyond food processing, like sensing chemicals in agriculture, air quality, and detecting disease markers in breath like those involved in kidney disease.
    32. What is the function of PEGS according to the text?
    A. To improve the service of stores. B. To help supermarkets store foods.
    C. To improve the taste of food products. D. To help people test food freshness.
    33. What role does the smartphone play while PEGS are functioning?
    A. It acts as an electronic nose. B. It discovers the spoilage gases from foods.
    C. It reads the data collected by PEGS. D. It helps print the gas sensors onto paper.
    34. What does Dr Firat Guder say about use-by dates?
    A. They are not completely reliable. B. They can help reduce food waste.
    C. They are not accepted by consumers. D. They are based on scientific research.
    35. What does the author mainly talk about in the text?
    A. The process of researching spoilage sensors.
    B. A new technology in packaging to reduce food waste.
    C. Use-by dates’ influence on supermarkets and consumers.
    D. The application of spoilage sensors beyond food processing.

It was a day just like every other day. I woke up early in the morning and went to run on Mount Gracious with my dog, Bubbles. As I ran up the mountain, with my dog following close behind, I felt energetic and refreshed. Running in a natural environment never failed to make me feel alive. When I reached the top, I drank some water and enjoyed the beautiful sunrise. This scene always took my breath away, no matter how many times I had seen it.
Having rested enough, Bubbles and I made our way back down the mountain. As we were running downhill, I saw an unfamiliar path and decided to explore the area. The path was full of rocks. It was not easy to walk.
Suddenly, I slipped on a muddy patch, rolling down five meters before I managed to grab hold of an exposed root of a huge tree. I was safe for now. However, I was seriously injured. My knees were badly hurt. My right foot was also dislocated (脱臼). I knew for sure I would be unable to make my way up or down the mountain without help. I called out to Bubbles and he barked loudly from above. It seemed like he understood that I needed help. He looked down at me pitifully before disappearing from sight.
As night fell, panic (恐慌) set in and scary thoughts went through my mind. There were many things that I had got to do. I couldn't die! This would not have happened if I had stuck to my usual path.
I was losing hope when I heard barking. It was Bubbles. I rubbed my eyes as I struggled to keep awake. But there was silence. Who could it be? Was I hallucinating (产生幻觉)? Then I heard some voices and more barking. Yes. Help was near, I knew. I could count on my dog to get help.

    Dear Jim,
As is mentioned in your previous letter, some unique courses in my school are really appealing. I am writing to inform you of the upcoming one to be held next week and sincerely invite you to participate in it.
To strengthen the awareness of labour, a special course to experience labor work will be a must for every single student in our school. Doing varieties of campus work, we will not be sitting in the classroom, learning academic subjects but serving as school gate keepers, dustmen, librarians and so on. We are expected to get a better understanding of labor work through it and to accomplish our deserved share at homes. What I am convinced is that you will never feel down taking part in it. I can't wait to explore it with you and am really looking forward to your participation.
    Best wishes for you.
    Yours Li Hua

Soon, I heard my parents calling my name. So I began calling back. A moment later, I saw the light of a flashlight. Following my voice and with Bubbles leading the way, my parents finally found me. They looked nervous and worried. After learning I was badly hurt, my parents quickly climbed down to me. They examined my cuts and my foot and decided that I had better not walk. Then, my father carried me on his back, down the mountain and to the nearest clinic, where a doctor was waiting for us.
Later, my parents told me what Bubbles had done to get help. He quickly ran home and waited until my parents came home from work. He barked loudly at my parents. They were confused and thought the dog might be hungry at first. So they gave Bubbles some food, but he didn't stop harking. Suddenly, they realized I hadn't come back home with Bubbles as usual and that I must have been in trouble. At that moment, Bubbles ran out and my parents followed him closely. Bubbles remembered the way and led my parents to the spot.

M: Oh, I’m in love with Greek food. It’s tasty. But Indian food is not my type.
    2.W: We’re planning a party tonight. Don’t miss it.
M: I’m sorry. I really want to come. But my parents will come to visit me. I have to pick them up at the airport this afternoon and we’ll have dinner outside later. We haven’t met since I came to work here.
3.M: Hi, Jane. I’m sorry to have you wait. But I still need 15 minutes to get to your place. The traffic is too busy.
W: Take your time. The party starts at 7:30. There are still 45 minutes left. You won’t miss it.
4.M:Do you have any seats for this Saturday evening’s talent show?
W: Yes, we still have a few tickets at $ 30.
M:Is there any discount for children?
W:Children under 12 can enjoy a half price.
M:OK. We’ll need two full-price tickets and one half-price child ticket.
5.W: Mark, I’ve heard you watched the film Avatar: The Way of Water last night. What do you think of it?
M: It’s fantastic. Although the plot is not so perfect, the visual special effects and sound effects are amazing. Especially the treatment of water is super realistic which made me think I was in a real world.
6.M: Do you hear that the play Hamlet will be put on this Saturday on the national theater? I’ve got two tickets. Would you like to come with me?
W: Oh, I really want to. But I have to look after my son. My husband won’t be back until this Sunday.
M: Don’t worry, we can ask my parents for help. They are available this weekend.
    W: That’s a good idea.
7.W: Jack, congratulations on getting such a good job.
M: Thanks. But actually I’m tired now. In order to pass the interview, I’ve worked day and night for a whole week. It’s rather challenging to stand out in 100 applicants.
W: But it’s all worth it. The job offers high salary as well as good future. The most important thing is that you can do what you like.
M: Yeah. Since I graduated from university, I’ve been keeping looking for a job as a bridge design engineer.
W: I know. You are so crazy about bridges that every weekend you will go out to appreciate the beauty of them. By the way, will you start your new job next Monday?
    M: Yes. I’m excited now.
8.W: Steve, just put down your cola and get out of the sofa. Let’s go hiking.
M: Oh, no. It’s so comfortable lying here. Look, Rose has updated her Wechat moments. I can enjoy the beautiful scenery without going out.
W: Come on. You’re overweight and that is doing great harm to your health. Your doctor warned you last time.

M: My doctor also said I need to exercise at least 40 minutes each day. That’s too much for me.
W: Don’t be discouraged. A new study suggests even half an hour’s walk every day does people good. Let’s get started. I’ll keep you company.
    M: All right. I’m coming.
9.W: Hi, Jack, how are you these days?
M: Not so good. All the things seem to be totally out of control. New school, new teachers, new classmates. The work load is too heavy for me. And I haven’t made any friends yet. I feel like a failure. This isn’t what I expected before.
W: Don’t worry. You’ll get used to it. Don’t you forget when we first met at primary school?
M: That’s because we were too little to step forward to others.
W: All things are difficult before they are easy. We can always find solutions. When you’re stressed, call your parents or old friends to get opinions. They are there all the time. Starting an easy topic with new friends is a good way to break the ice. Take easy with your study. It’s just the beginning of the term.
M: OK. I’ll try. Let’s go back home. The store is going to close up.
10.Dear guests, welcome to Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding. Located at No. 1375 Panda Road, the Base is 10 km away from the city center and over 30 km from Chengdu Shuangliu International Airport, which serves as a reserve for giant pandas, red pandas, and other endangered wild animals unique to China. To make you have a better experience, some rules must be followed. First, please keep quiet. Giant pandas and other animals are quiet by nature and will be stressed by loud and sudden noise. Second, you may take pictures, but you are not allowed to use a flash. The eyes of animals, especially baby pandas, are sensitive to flashes. Most important of all, do not feed animals! Your food is not suitable for them and will make them sick. At the Base, there is a tourist service center providing Chinese and foreign tourists with free services, including a microwave oven, hot water, baby carriages, armchairs, walking sticks, umbrellas and sewing kits. If you have any questions, please call 83510033. Wish you a happy journey.
