One day the Squire and Mrs Gordon decided to visit some friends who lived about forty-six miles from our home, and James drove them.
In the evening we stopped at a big hotel to spend the night. James drove the carriage into a yard. The stableman brought us into the stable and two grooms looked after us. One man, Towler, had a pipe in his mouth.
“Towler,” the stableman said. “Get some hay for these horses. Put your pipe down first!”
“All right,” said Towler. He got the hay, and left.
I didn’t know what time it was, but I woke up in the middle of the night. I felt very uncomfortable. Ginger was coughing. It was dark, and I couldn’t see anything, but the stable was full of smoke, and it was hard to breathe. I heard a strange noise. I did not know what the noise was, but I was very frightened.
At last I heard steps outside, and the stableman came in with a light. He tried to lead the horses out but they were very frightened. Finally, he came to me next and tried to drag me out. I didn’t want to go. In the end, he tried us all and then left the stable. Maybe we were foolish, but we knew we were in danger and we did not trust anyone.
I looked up and I saw a red light dancing on the wall. Then I heard the shout of “Fire!” coming from outside. There was a terrible roaring noise. Next I heard James’ voice, calm and cheerful, “Beauties, wake up and come with me,” he said. He tied his scarf over my eyes. And he led me out of the stable, and out of danger.
The next morning James heard that Dick Towler was responsible for the fire. The night before, a man saw him in the stable with a pipe in his mouth. At Birtwick Park there was a rule that was called “ ”. And it was a very good rule.

Like you and your pet dog, plants are living things: they eat, drink, and grow. Unlike you and your dog, they can’t run away, use fists or teeth, or hide under the covers when they’re threatened. But they can fight back.
Why would a plant need to fight back? To avoid being eaten, of course! Plants have several ways of protecting themselves. A plant can grow in a hidden or hard-to-get-to place. Think of plants you’ve seen growing on steep, rocky cliffs (悬崖). Or, a plant could make only some parts of itself attractive to hungry insects and animals. For instance, if a plant produced really tasty leaves, herbivores (creatures that eat only plants) might eat the leaves instead of the seeds, which the plant needs for making more plants. Some plants have sharp or slippery (滑的) parts that discourage insects and other animals from getting too close, like the thorns (刺) on a rosebush.
But the most interesting way is that plants can produce chemicals. Plants take minerals from the soil and combine them into chemicals that do a lot of work. For example, plants produce chlorophyll (叶绿素), which helps convert sunshine and water into the sugars that plants eat. They also produce chemicals to help protect themselves. One kind of tobacco plants releases a chemical into the air whenever small bugs begin to eat it. The chemical signals large bugs, saying “Dinner’s ready!” The big bugs come to eat the little ones and save the plant.
Most plants use chemicals in a more direct way against their enemies. In other words, plants make poison.
    38. What does the underlined word “convert” in Paragraph 3 mean?
    A. Form. B. Separate. C. Change. D. Produce.
    39. What do we know from the passage?
    A. Some plants hide under the covers when faced with threat.
    B. Some plants produce tasty leaves to protect their seeds.
    C. A plant grows on rocky cliffs to draw people’s attention.
    D. Plants produce chemicals to meet the needs of big bugs.
    40. What may be talked about following the last paragraph?
    A. How plants use poison. B. Why plants make poison.
    C. Different kinds of plants. D. Different kinds of signals.
    41. What would be the best title for the passage?
    A. Plant enemies B. Plant self-protection C. Plant poisons D. Plant information
    D
Driverless cars are coming. Such cars will make getting from one place to another safer and less stressful. They also could reduce pollution. But how should driverless cars deal with emergencies (紧急情况)? People disagree on the answer. And that might put the brakes (刹车) on this technology, a new study concludes.
To understand the challenge, imagine a car that suddenly meets some walkers in the road. Even with braking, it’s too late to avoid a crash. So the car’s artificial intelligence (人工智能) must decide whether to swerve (急转弯). To save the walkers, should the car swerve off the road or swerve into busy traffic? What if such choices would likely kill the car’s passengers?
Researchers used online surveys to study people’s attitudes about such situations with driverless cars. People mostly agreed that driverless cars should be designed to protect the most people. But there is a problem. Those same surveyed people also want to protect passengers at all costs—even if the walkers would now end up dying.
“ Driverless cars can completely change transportation”, says Iyad Rahwan. But, he adds, this new technology creates a moral problem that could slow its acceptance.
“Makers of driverless cars are in a hard situation,” Bonnefon’s group warns. Most buyers would want their cars to be designed to protect themselves first. However, rules might one day instruct that cars must act for the greater good. That would mean saving the most people. But the scientists think rules like this could drive away buyers.
The expert Kurt Gray thinks that even if all driverless cars are designed to protect their passengers in emergencies, traffic accidents will decrease. Those cars might be dangerous to walkers on rare occasions. But they won’t speed, won’t drive drunk while driving, which would be a win for society.
42.The underlined word “challenge” in Paragraph 2 refers to ____________.
    A. people’s negative attitudes towards driverless cars
    B. how driverless cars reduce traffic accidents
    C. the technical problems that driverless cars have
    D. how driverless cars deal with emergencies
    43. According to the text, online surveys show that ____________.
    A. driverless cars artificial intelligence needs improvement
    B. the busy traffic may be a problem for driverless cars
    C. people have a moral problem about driverless cars
    D. driverless cars should be designed to protect drivers
    44. What can we learn from Paragraph 5?
    A. Rules are in support of drivers.
    B. Most people dislike driverless cars now.
    C. Driverless car makers are in a hard situation.
    D. The benefits of driverless cars are introduced.
    45. What is Kurt Gray’s attitude toward driverless cars?
    A. Favorable. B. Doubtful. C. Surprised. D. Scared.

Educating girls quite possibly harvests more return than any other investment (投资) in the developing world. Women’s education may be an unusual economic (经济的) field, but increasing women’s contribution to development is actually a social problem.
Parents in low-income(低收入)countries fail to invest in their daughters because they do not expect them to make an economic contribution to the family: girls grow up only to marry into somebody else’s family and bear children. Girls are seen as less valuable than boys and are kept at home to do housework while their brothers are sent to school ― this leads to a vicious (恶性的) circle.
An educated mother, on the other hand, has greater earning abilities outside the home and faces different choices. She is likely to have fewer but healthier children and can insist on the development of all her children, making sure that her daughters are given an equal chance. The education of her daughters then makes it more possible that the next generation of girls, as well as of boys, will be educated and healthy. The vicious circle is thus turned into a virtuous circle.
Educating women brings great social benefits. But it has big economic advantages as well. Most obviously, there is the direct effect of education on the wages(工资)of female workers. Wages rise by 10 to 20 per cent for each additional year of schooling. Such big returns are impressive by the standard of other available investments, but they are just the beginning. Educating women also has an important effect on health practices, including family planning.
