    教学目标:

    At the end of the class, the students will be able to:

    1. learn the new words and expressions.

    2. retell when and how basketball was invented.

    3. If you like, you can talk more about basketball.

    教学重点:

    1. Key vocabulary:

      the Olympics, Canadian, divide, basket, hero...

    divide...into, not only ...but also, stop...from doing..., look up to, at the same time, encourage sb. to do.  

    2. Key sentences:

    a. Basketball is a much-loved and active sport that is enjoyed by many for fun and exercise.

    b. Basketball was invented by a Canadian doctor named James Naismith, who was born in 1861.

    c. When he was a college teacher,he was asked to think of a game that could be played in the winter.

    d. Basketball has not only become a popular sport to play, but it has also become a popular sport

    to watch.

    3. Structure:

     be+past participle

    1. Show some pictures of sports to Ss for look, guide them to think of the sports inside and outside.

    2. Ask Ss some questions about basketball.

    3. Explain equipment about basketball and help Ss learn more about basketball. Lead in 2a.

     Pre-reading

    (PPT 8-16)

    Work on 2a,2b.

    1. Show some knowledge about baskertball to Ss to learn.

    2. Make Ss discuss the sport with their partners and then share their ideas with the class.

    3. Ask Ss to read the passage about the history of basketball and match the main ideas with each paragraph.

    4. Check answers in class.

    Careful reading.

    Make Ss read the passage carefully and complete the following tasks.

    1.Read paragraph 1 and complete the chart about Introduction to basketball.

    2.Read paragraph 2 and fill in the chart about How basketball was invented.

    3.Read paragraph 3 and fill in the blanks about The popularity of basketball today.

    4. Check answers in class.

    Work on 2c,2d,2e.

    1. Ask Ss to read the passage again and complete the mind map with the information in the passage.

    2. Make Ss retell the passage using the information in the mind map.

    3. Ask Ss to use the mind map to summarize what they remember about the development of basketball. Answer the following questions first.

    Who invented basketball and how is it played?

    When was the first basketball game in history played?

    Why were the Berlin Olympics important for basketball?

    What are the professional basketball groups in America and China?

    How popular is basketball?

    4. Make Ss have a discussion about basketball players.

    Do you want to be a famous basketball player?

    What do you think of famous basketball players?

    Ask Ss to make a list of good and difficult things about being a famous basketball player. Encourage Ss to express their opinions.
