    【解析】
【原文】W: I read a story in a book the other day. It showed something important and I wanted to share it with you. The story was set in the years before cars were invented, so the rich had to travel in coaches. One day, a young lady wanted to watch a play in the theater. Her coachman took her to the theater in a coach. It was very cold. While she was watching the play, the poor coachman had to sit outside in the snow on the driver’s seat of the coach looking after the horse. Inside the theater, the lady was moved to tears by the performance. Some actors in the play were in extremely poor situations. She showed great pity on them. However, when she came out and saw the coachman covered with snow and almost frozen to death, she just considered it as a normal part of life. Nowadays, whenever I see people in terrible situations on TV, I feel sad, wishing that I could do something to make a difference. But I often ignore people and things around me, like people who struggle with life. They lose their jobs, experience death in their family or suffer diseases. Help those as you can. This is the story. Is there anyone who can share something you read during the holidays in class?

The day before yesterday, when Peter’s family were having dinner, Father raised an interesting question, “Was there anything in our past that we feel ashamed of, guilty about, or regretted? Maybe we can find ways to say sorry, or take some action to right any wrongdoing.” This seemed like a very private matter, but Peter thought about it carefully the whole night.
Peter remembered an incident from middle school. In his school, there was a worker, Neil Stone, who none of the kids liked. One night, Peter and two of his classmates decided to play a trick on him. They found a can of red paint, and wrote on the school main road in bright red: Neil Stone is a fool! The next day, the whole school saw these words. Within two hours, Neil had Peter and his two classmates in his office. His classmates said that they had done it but Peter lied and denied the truth.
This morning, Peter went back to his middle school. Neil Stone is still working there. “Sorry, Neil. Do you still remember what happened ten years ago? I want you to know that I did it.” “I knew it!’ Neil laughed. They had a good laugh and a lively discussion. Neil’s closing words were: “Peter, I always felt bad for you because your classmates got it off their mind, and I knew you were carrying it around all these years. I want to thank you for visiting me… for your sake.”
Peter knows that no matter how difficult the situation is, it is never too late to clear up the past and make a fresh start.

    A. Something helpful. B. Something unpleasant.
    C. Something valuable. D. Something useful.

    27. What is the best title for this passage?
    A. Peter’s family. B. An unforgettable lesson.

    C
As we age, even if we’re healthy, the heart just isn’t as efficient in processing oxygen as it used to be. In most people the first signs show up in their 50s or early 60s. And among people who don’t exercise, the changes can start even sooner.
“Think of a rubber band. In the beginning, it is flexible, but put it in a drawer for 20 years and it will become dry and easily broken,” says Dr. Ben Levine, a heart specialist at the University of Texas. That’s what happens to the heart. Fortunately for those in midlife, Levine is finding that even if you haven’t been an enthusiastic exerciser, getting in shape now may help improve your aging heart.
Levine and his research team selected volunteers aged between 45 and 64 who did not exercise much but were otherwise healthy. Participants were randomly divided into two groups. The first group participated in a program of nonaerobic (无氧) exercise—balance training and weight training—three times a week. The second group did high-intensity aerobic exercise under the guidance of a trainer for four or more days a week. After two years, the second group saw remarkable improvements in heart health.
“We took these 50-year-old hearts and turned the clock back to 30-or 35-year-old hearts,” says Levine. “And the reason they got so much stronger and fitter was that their hearts could now fill a lot better and pump (泵送) a lot more blood during exercise.” But the hearts of those who participated in less intense exercise didn’t change, he says.
“The sweet spot in life to start exercising, if you haven’t already, is in late middle age when the heart still has flexibility,” Levine says. “We put healthy 70-year-olds through a yearlong exercise training program, and nothing happened to them at all.”
Dr. Nieca Goldberg, a spokeswoman for the American Heart Association, says Levine’s findings are a great start. But the study was small and needs to be repeated with far larger groups of people to determine exactly which aspects of an exercise routine make the biggest difference.
    28. What does Levine want to explain by mentioning the rubber band?
    A. The right way of exercising. B. The causes of a heart attack.
    C. The difficulty of keeping fit. D. The aging process of the heart.
    29. In which aspect were the two groups different in terms of research design?
    A. Diet plan. B. Professional background.
    C. Exercise type. D. Previous physical condition.
    30. What does Levine’s research find?
    A. Middle-aged hearts get younger with aerobic exercise.
    B. High-intensity exercise is more suitable for the young.
    C. It is never too late for people to start taking exercise.
    D. The more exercise we do, the stronger our hearts get.
    31. What does Dr. Nieca Goldberg suggest?
    A. Making use of the findings. B. Interviewing the study participants.
    C. Conducting further research. D. Clarifying the purpose of the study.
    【答案】28. D 29. C 30. A 31. C

Vanessa Berlowitz, who studied science at Oxford University, now works as a producer for the BBC. She has worked on many nature documentaries, including the 2006 BBC program Planet Earth. For this series, she travelled around the world to film the world’s greatest mountains.
The job of series producer is very complex. For Frozen Planet, a sevenpart series that explores what life is like on the North and South Poles, Berlowitz had to decide when and where to film. She also had to decide how to tell the story. Every day, she helped set up the cameras, which can take hours. With the crew, she often spent hours quietly looking or waiting for animals. She talked about the day the crew finally found a polar bear and her cubs.
“A mother polar bear was having a hard time finding food for her cubs. But the little cubs were playing, which made her hunt difficult. I was crying with laughter when she put one of the little cubs in a hole so she could hunt. I thought, this is what mothers do!”
Berlowitz is one of very few series women producers. She hopes more women will become producers in the future. She said: “As producers you do not have to be very physically strong, but you have to be happy to go to extreme areas.”
Berlowitz enjoys seeing new parts of the world and filming things many people have never seen before. But the best part of her work is hearing from the people who watch her documentaries.
“I got a wonderful email from an elevenyearold girl from Iran. She was so excited that women do jobs like mine. She wants to try and follow my example. She wrote me a beautiful poem, which was about the polar bear film. It made me cry with joy.” she said.
    32. What can we learn about Berlowitz’s work?
    A. It needs to be done independently. B. It always puts her in danger.
    C. It takes time and patience. D. It has nothing to do with her major.
    33. What feeling did Berlowitz express from her observation of bears?
    A. Pride. B. Worry. C. Pity. D. Fun.
    34. What did Berlowitz say to possible producers?
    A. Grow a strong body. B. Be prepared to travel around the world.
    C. Be pleased to go to terrible places. D. Learn to deal with extreme weather conditions.
    35. Why did Berlowitz talk about the Iranian girl?
    A. To prove Frozen Planet's huge influence.
    B. To describe her hope for the little girl.
    C. To show her audience’s positive response means a lot to her.
    D. To explain she set a good example for girls worldwide.
    【答案】32. C 33. D 34. C 35. C
