Reading can make you feel less alone and more connected with the world at large. It can open your eyes to issues, successes and challenges that you never dreamed of, and take you to faraway places. Here are the top books all teens should read before they turn 18.
A Wrinkle in Time by Madeleine L’Engle
Though this book recently became popular again due to the release of the movie version, the movie is not a substitute for this beautiful story about family and the process of becoming who you truly are through the angle of space and time exploration.
    Wonder by R. J. Palacio
Auggie was born with a facial difference that kept him out of school for years. In fifth grade, he discovers what it’s like to long for normalcy and also that difference can be the most meaningful teacher.
Brown Girl Dreaming by Jacqueline Woodson
The author shares beautiful poetry that will speak to teenagers about her experience of growing up in the South as an African-American in the 1960s and 1970s. The poems are charged with the themes of self-awareness and identity.
The Four Agreements by Don Miguel Ruiz

Chelesa Fearce had a secret that her classmates didn’t know. A secret that could not defeat her. A secret that she was ready to reveal on graduation day: she was homeless.
Today, six years later, her story of perseverance continues, from a teenager studying by the stove light at motels to Spelman College graduate and medical researcher now starting Yale Medical School.
“Homelessness taught me how to work hard, always persevere and never let anything get in my way,” Fearce said recently.
The 23-year-old girl made national news in 2013 with her story of success over a difficult situation. Her academic success landed her a full scholarship to Spelman, where she graduated in 2017 with a Bachelor of Science in biochemistry. She has worked full-time for the past two years at the National Institutes for Health in Bethesda, Maryland, doing research on drugs. And this month, Fearce starts Yale Medical School with a full scholarship to cover living expenses. She expects to be at the Ivy League school for eight years and to graduate with her doctorate and a medical degree. Her longtime goal is a career in psychiatry
Fearce’s story is kept alive on the home front by the Clayton County school system. In her name, the system annually awards scholarships to local homeless students with good academic records. The scholarships of $250 to $1,000 come from donations collected in the whole country, which ranked first in the state in 2016—2017 in student homelessness with about 2,700 students.
Hearing about her helps “the students know what is possible,” said Jacqueline Evans, which deals with the problem of student homelessness. “Sometimes, you have to see somebody else to know it can happen to you.”
    4. Which word can describe Fearce’s attitude to her homelessness?
    A. Thankful. B. Painful.
    C. Curious. D. Concerned.
    5. What did Fearce do in 2018?
    A. She delivered speeches.
    B. She settled in Spelman.
    C. She researched biochemistry.
    D. She studied drugs carefully.
    6. How were the scholarships in Fearce’s name gotten?
    A. Through the government’s funds.
    B. Through the efforts of Fearce.
    C. By way of local donations.
    D. By way of contributions.
    7. What’s the best title for the passage?
    A. Chelesa Fearce Lets Out Her Secret
    B. Fearce’s Story Inspires Many More
    C. Strong Will Makes a Girl Well-known
    D. The Homeless Is at Yale Medical School
A 5. D 6. D 7. D
根据第三段中的句子“Homelessness taught me how to work hard, always persevere and never let anything get in my way(无家可归教会了我如何努力工作,始终坚持不懈,不让任何事情阻挡我的道路)”可知,她对于自己的无家可归的经历是感激的。故选A。
根据第四段中的“she graduated in 2017 ...She has worked full-time for the past two years at the National Institutes for Health in Bethesda, Maryland, doing research on drugs.(她2017年毕业了……过去两年,她一直在马里兰州贝塞斯达的National Institutes for Health从事药物研究。)”可知,在2018年她在研究药物。故选D。
    【6题详解】
细节理解题。根据第五段中的“In her name, the system annually awards scholarships to local homeless students with good academic records. The scholarships of $250 to $1,000 come from donations collected in the whole country(该系统以她的名义,每年向学习成绩优异的当地无家可归的学生发放奖学金。250至1000美元的奖学金来自全国各地的捐款)”可知,以她名义的奖学金是通过整个社会的捐款筹集的。故选D。
    【7题详解】
主旨大意题。通读全文,尤其是第三段的““Homelessness taught me how to work hard, always persevere and never let anything get in my way,” Fearce said recently.(菲尔斯最近说:“无家可归教会了我如何努力工作,始终坚持不懈,不让任何事情阻挡我的道路。”)”和第四段的“And this month, Fearce starts Yale Medical School with a full scholarship to cover living expenses.(这个月,菲尔斯开始在耶鲁大学医学院学习,并获得全额奖学金以支付生活费)”可知,本文主要讲的是一位女孩虽然曾经无家可归,但是她努力学习,最终取得骄人的成绩。因此最好的题目是D选项“The Homeless Is at Yale Medical School(无家可归的人在耶鲁医学院)”。故选D。
    C
As a young child, I was painfully shy. I’d watch other children play in the park, wishing I could join them, but I was too scared to approach. Eventually, my mother would come to the rescue. She’d ask the other kids if I could play, too. Today, I feel comfortable giving public lectures in large halls and having conversations in small groups, but I still tend to avoid situations in which I’m expected to spend time with a roomful of strangers.
There could be many reasons. For one thing, I might be carrying some childhood fear of rejection. But beyond that possibility, one likely element is that I tend to underestimate how much people like me after I meet them, as most of us do.
A new research paper reports that the common concern that new people may not like us, or that they may not enjoy our company, is largely unfounded.
Erica Boothby of Cornell University and her colleagues conducted a series of studies to find out what our conversation partners really think of us. In doing so, they discovered a new cognitive illusion (认知错觉) they call “the liking gap”: our failure to realize how much strangers appreciate our company after a bit of conversation.
The researchers observed the gap in a variety of situations: strangers getting acquainted in the research laboratory, first-year college students getting to know their dormitory mates over the course of many months, and community members meeting fellow participants in personal development workshops. In each circumstance, people consistently underestimated how much others liked them. For much of the academic year, as dormitory mates got to know each other and even started to develop enduring friendships, the liking gap persisted.
The data also revealed some of the potential reasons for the illusion: we are often more severe with ourselves than with others, and our inner critic prevents us from appreciating how positively other people evaluate us. Not knowing what our conversation partners really think of us, we use our own thoughts as a proxy (代理人). This is a mistake, because our thoughts tend to be more negative than reality.
    8. Why does the author mention his childhood experience?
    A. To show how his character changed.
    B. To explain what he was like when he was young.
    C. To show an example of why people are shy of communication.
    D. To emphasize the important role of a mother in one’s childhood.
    9. What does the underlined word “unfounded” probably mean?
    A. Careless. B. Baseless. C. Selfless. D. Meaningless.
    10. What do we know about the liking gap from the text?
    A. It indicates what strangers really think of us.
    B. It begins and ends quickly among strangers.
    C. It disappears when strangers get to know each other.
    D. It states our misunderstanding of how much others like us.
    11. Which of the following is the best title for this text?
    A. People Like You More than You Know
    B. How to Get Along Well with Strangers
    C. The Way to Know What Others Think of Us
    D. Having Conversations with Strangers Benefits Us
C 9. B 10. D 11. A
根据第一段关键句“As a young child, I was painfully shy. I’d watch other children play in the park, wishing I could join them, but I was too scared to approach.”(小时候,我非常害羞。 和第二段内容“There could be many reasons. For one thing, I might be carrying some childhood fear of rejection. But beyond that possibility, one likely element is that I tend to underestimate how much people like me after I meet them, as most of us do.”(可能有很多原因。
根据第四段关键句“In doing so, they discovered a new cognitive illusion (认知错觉) they call “the liking gap”: our failure to realize how much strangers appreciate our company after a bit of conversation.”(在这样做的过程中,他们发现了一种新的认知错觉,他们称之为“喜欢差距”:经过一番交谈后,我们没有意识到陌生人有多么欣赏我们的陪伴。)
通读全文,结合第二段关键句“But beyond that possibility, one likely element is that I tend to underestimate how much people like me after I meet them, as most of us do.”(但除此之外,一个可能的因素是,我和我们大多数人一样,在遇到别人之后,往往会低估他们对我的喜爱程度。)和第四段关键句“In doing so, they discovered a new cognitive illusion (认知错觉) they call “the liking gap”: our failure to realize how much strangers appreciate our company after a bit of conversation.”(在这样做的过程中,他们发现了一种新的认知错觉,他们称之为“喜欢差距”:经过一番交谈后,我们没有意识到陌生人有多么欣赏我们的陪伴。) 故选A项。
    D
You look up at the sky on a clear and dark night, you’ll see more stars than your eyes can count. Most of these stars have planets, similar to our own, orbiting them. With so many celestial bodies floating out in space, you can’t help but question whether other forms of life exist in the universe. And if that’s the case, is it possible to contact them?
Science is still somewhat divided on this issue. Currently, no evidence exists to suggest that intelligent life exists elsewhere in the universe. Yet with an estimated one trillion planets in our galaxy alone, it seems highly likely that Earthlings aren’t the only intelligent creatures out there. Some claim that life can only develop under perfect circumstances, and Earth is perhaps the only example of this. Other scientists object to this claim, and point out that even on Earth, life can find a way under the most extreme circumstances.
Some people believe that aliens have already visited our planet, but this information is being kept secret by governments. The most famous incident of this kind occurred in Roswell, New Mexico in 1947. On that date, many residents reported seeing an unusual flying disc streak through the sky, before it crashed in a field. When the military heard about the crash, they quickly sealed off the area. A few hours later, the army base announced that it had recovered a flying disk. Shortly after, this statement was retracted and it was said that it was a weather balloon that crashed. However, years later one local mortician even claimed that the military had him secretly perform an autopsy on a dead alien body.
Others believe that there certainly are other life forms out there, but the distance between us is too great. Even if we could somehow create a spaceship that travels at the speed of light, it would still probably take several lifetimes to reach them. Then again, we might never have to do this if aliens reach us first.
    12. Why do some scientists think there is life on other planets?
    A. Because an unusual flying disc was ever witnessed.
    B. Because life exists despite extreme conditions as those on the Earth do.
    C. Because the government’s statement seemed suspicious.
    D. Because there are a great number of planets in the universe.
    13. What does the underlined word “retracted” in paragraph 3 mean?
    A. Examined again to guarantee the correctness. B. Emphasized again to persuade people.
    C. Formally taken back what has been said. D. Seriously criticized due to poor evidence
    14. Which of the following might be the best title for the text?
    A. Are we alone in the universe? B. Is it possible to contact aliens?
    C. Intelligent life in the universe. D. Planets floating out in space.
    15. How does the author sound in the passage?
    A. Objective. B. Humorous. C. Cautious. D. Anxious.
D 13. C 14. A 15. A
根据第二段中“Yet with an estimated one trillion planets in our galaxy alone, it seems highly likely that Earthlings aren’t the only intelligent creatures out there.(然而,据估计,仅在我们的星系中就有一万亿颗行星,地球人似乎很有可能不是唯一的智慧生物)”可知,有些科学家认为其他星球上有生命是因为宇宙中有大量的行星。
根据画线词上文“A few hours later, the army base announced that it had recovered a flying disk. Shortly after, this statement was”以及后文“it was said that it was a weather balloon that crashed(据说是一个气象气球坠毁)”可知,该军事基地宣布他们找到了一个飞碟。
根据第一段中“With so many celestial bodies floating out in space, you can’t help but question whether other forms of life exist in the universe. And if that’s the case, is it possible to contact them?(太空中漂浮着这么多天体,你不禁要问宇宙中是否存在其他形式的生命。如果有的话,能联系上他们吗?)”结合文章主要论述了太空中是否还存在其它形式的生命,论述了不同的人对此的不同看法。可知,A选项“我们是宇宙中唯一的存在吗?”最符合文章标题。故选A。
根据第二段中“Science is still somewhat divided on this issue.(科学界在这个问题上仍然存在分歧)”;第三段中“Some people believe that aliens have already visited our planet, but this information is being kept secret by governments.(有些人认为外星人已经访问过我们的星球,但这些信息被政府保密)”以及最后一段中“Others believe that there certainly are other life forms out there, but the distance between us is too great.(另一些人认为肯定有其他生命形式存在,但我们之间的距离太大了)”可推知,文中没有提到作者的观点,即作者是客观的语气。故选A。
