A lt f us lse life’s tugh situatins by munting a frntal attack when a tuch f humr might well enable us t chalk up a win. Cnsider the case f a yung friend f mine, Sam, wh hit a traffic jam n the way t wrk. Althugh there was a gd reasn fr Sam’s cnstant lateness-serius illness at hme, he decided that this by-nw-familiar excuse wuldn’t wrk any lnger. A new study finds that the average perfrmance f students frm the lwest incme families in the US lags(滞后) abut three t fur years behind that f the highest incme students-an achievement gap that has remained cnstant fr decades. An analysis f standardized tests given t mre than 2. 7 millin middle and high schl students ver 40 years suggests that federal educatin prgrams aimed at clsing the gap are falling shrt.
Researchers lked at results frm fur different prgrams cnducted natinwide at varius intervals frm 1971 t 2015 t test teenagers in math, reading and science. A ttal f 98 exams were used in the prgrams, testing students aged 13-15 as well as 17-year-lds. Test scres fr 17-year-ld students in the bttm 10th incme percentile(百分位) were far lwer than thse in the tp 10th percentile.
Meanwhile, the verall test scres didn't shift fr 17-year-lds during the study perid. They did imprve slightly fr 13-t 15-year-lds, which suggests that federal prgrams fr yunger students have been helpful. But the lwest incme students still scre much lwer than the highest incme students. “Prgrams fr lder students are badly needed,” says study cauthr Eric Hanushek, an educatin ecnmist at Stanfrd University. “Lwer achievement in high schl leads t lwer earning ptential thrughut adulthd. The next generatin is ging t lk a lt like this generatin. Kids frm pr families will becme pr themselves.”
Whether the prblem is wrsening, hwever, is up fr debate. A 2011 study, cnducted by Stanfrd educatin scilgist Sean Reardn, lked at 12 exams administered frm 1960 t 2007, and fund that the gap in test scres between the prest and the wealthiest students grew by 40 percent. It shws the prest students lag abut three t six years behind their wealthier peers in learning. Reardn suggested parents f means were increasingly investing in their children's educatin, sharpening the divide.
The different results between the new study and that cnducted in 2011 cme dwn t the fact that the researchers analyzed results frm different tests and hw they categrized(分类) family incme level, says educatin scilgist Anna Chmielewski. Hanushek and Reardn agree that the incme-related achievement gap is alarming.
12.What des the result f the new study indicate?
A.The prest students' lagging behind exists in specific age grups.
B.A better standard fr categry shuld be adpted in the study.
C.The federal educatin prgrams turned ut unsuccessful generally.
D.A better schl perfrmance necessarily leads t higher incme.
13.Hw des the authr present the serius issue?
A.By shwing the discussin result.B.By clarifying sme pints.
    C.By ding a questinnaire.D.By making a cmparisn.
14.What may cause the different results f the tw studies?
    A.The different cuntries.B.The analytical methds.
    C.The incme assessments.D.The different ranges f age.
15.Why des the incme-related achievement gap cncern peple?
    A.It will disappear eventually.
B.It will further widen the scial gap.
C.It results in the students' blind cmpetitins.
D.It makes Americans smarter and richer.
