The average age f van dwellers（居住者）was 42．After asking respndents t rank the reasns why they chse t live in a vehicle, ranked frm tp t bttm are: 1) freedm, 2) lw cst f living, 3) adventure, 4）cnnectin t nature,5）minimalism,6）aviding undesirable weather,7）starting a new life, 8）pursuing wrk in different places, 9）wrking remtely, 10）t be n their wn, 11）t jin a partner, 12）t leave a partner.
Abve all else, vehicle dwellers sught t be free. Whether they were a re tire n in a $100,000 Mercedes van, r yung Canadians wrking frm a $5 ,000 van, respndents wanted t be able t mve their hme t any place that was best fr them. Fr thers, living in a vehicle minimized their csts, allwing them t wrk less r make the mst f their incme withut paying rent.
As it turns ut, van living is nt a fad. While many respndents were new t van living, n average, respndents indicated they had been living in a vehicle fr an average f 2.5 years. Seventy-eight per cent f respndents permanently lived in a vehicle.
