    Ever since she received a little ty airliner as a birthday gift, Kate Kralevskaya has been attracted by flight.     There are several unusual aspects t the current fires. They expanded dramatically even withut the usual driver fr large and fast-mving fires in the state---pwerful, dry winds. “That makes the large area burned in such a shrt time all the mre astnishing, since they’re essentially spreading n accunt f their wn intensity,” says Swain.
    The ignitin (点火) f fires by dry lightning is als rare fr the regin, says Stephen Pyne at Arizna State University. He says this is Califrnia’s furth majr fire year in a rw, when histrically the state has seen between seven and 12 years between big fire seasns.
    In the Gulf f Mexic, it is severe hurricanes that are the prblem. Hurricane Laura made landfall in the US n Thursday 27 August amid fficial warnings f an “unsurvivable” strm surge (风暴潮), widespread flding and catastrphic wind damage.
    The strm is the first f fur hurricanes in the Atlantic this year. Abut fur-fifths f il and gas prductin in the Gulf f Mexic has been shut dwn.
