“There is evidence tday that herbivres can limit fire by reducing the fuel lad,” says Allisn Karp at Yale University. In fact, sme supprters f rewilding argue that restring large herbivres can help reduce wildfires.
A few studies have already fund that there were mre fires in specific regins after the lss f giant herbivres during the past 50,000 years. Karp and her clleagues decided t lk at the glbal picture by analyzing tw existing databases. One, called HerbiTraits, has infrmatin n all herbivres larger than 10 kilgrams that have lived in the past 130, 000 years. The ther, called the Glbal Palefire Database, has recrds f charcal depsited (木炭沉积) in lakes frm 160 sites wrldwide, which shw changes in fire activity nearby.
The team fund that the biggest increases in fire activity were in the cntinents that lst the mst big herbivres, such as Suth America, with smaller increases in the cntinents where there were fewer extinctins, such as in Africa.
Karp says her study cannt tell us anything abut the effects f this increased fire activity. But ther studies suggest that they were dramatic. After humans wiped ut Australia’s giant herbivres, fr instance, increased fire activity may have transfrmed the cntinent’s vegetatin (植被).

A few studies have already fund that there were mre fires in specific regins after the lss f giant herbivres during the past 50,000 years. Karp and her clleagues decided t lk at the glbal picture by analyzing tw existing databases. One, called HerbiTraits, has infrmatin n all herbivres larger than 10 kilgrams that have lived in the past 130, 000 years. The ther, called the Glbal Palefire Database, has recrds f charcal depsited (木炭沉积) in lakes frm 160 sites wrldwide, which shw changes in fire activity nearby.
The team fund that the biggest increases in fire activity were in the cntinents that lst the mst big herbivres, such as Suth America, with smaller increases in the cntinents where there were fewer extinctins, such as in Africa.
