    第三部分 阅读理解(共15小题;每小题2分,满分30分)

    请认真阅读下列短文,从短文后各题所给的A、B、C四个选项中,选出最佳选项。

    A

By the early 20th century, as the United States became an international power, its cultural self-identity (认同) became more complex. The United States was becoming more diverse as immigrants streamed into the country, settling especially in America’s growing urban areas. At this time, America’s social diversity began to find significant expression in the arts and culture. American writers of German, Irish, Jewish, and Scandinavian ancestry began to find an audience, although some of the cultural elite (中坚分子) resisted the works, considering them crude and unrefined.

Many of these writers focused on 20th-century city life and themes, such as poverty, efforts to assimilate (消化) into the United States, and family life in the new country. European influence now meant something very different than it once had: Artists changed the core of American experience by incorporating their various immigrant origins into its cultural vision. During the 1920s and 1930s, a host of African American poets and novelists added their voices to this new American vision. Langston Hughes, Zora Neale Hurston, and Countee Cullen, among others, gathered in New York City’s Harlem (黑人住宅区) district. They began to write about their unique experiences, creating a movement called the Harlem Renaissance.

Visual artists of the early 20th century also began incorporating the many new sights and colors of the multiethnic (不同种族的) America visible in these new city settings. Painters associated with a group known as The Eight, such as Robert Henri and John Sloan, portrayed the picturesque sights of the city. Later painters and photographers focused on the city’s squalid (污秽的) aspects. Although nature remained a significant part of American cultural self-expression, as the paintings of Georgia O’Keeffe demonstrated, it was no longer at the heart of American culture. By the 1920s and 1930s few artists or writers considered nature the extraordinary basis of American cultural identity.

In popular music too, the songs of many nations became American songs. Tin Pan Alley was full of immigrant talents who helped define American music, especially in the form of the Broadway musical. Some songwriters, such as Irving Berlin and George M. Cohan, used their music to help define American patriotic songs and holiday traditions. During the 1920s musical forms such as the blues and jazz began to dominate the rhythms of American popular music. These forms had their roots in Africa as adapted in the American South and then in cities.

    56. The main theme of the painting in the early 20th century is .

    A. poverty B. experience C. nature D. life

    57. Which of the following countries’ culture might have the least effect on American culture?

    A. Finland. B. India. C. South Africa. D. Irish.

    58. The following is true EXCEPT .

    A. Many artists or writers didn’t realize the function of nature in the basis of American cultural identity until 1920s.

    B. The blues and jazz was quite popular in the 1920s and had a closely relation with African music.

    C. Immigrants affected America’s social diversity and it can be found in the change of the arts and culture at that time.

    D. The paintings which were created by Robert Henri and John Sloan may be about the beautiful scenery of the city.

    59. What is some of the cultural elite’s attitude towards the works written by the writers who came from Europe?

    A. Critical. B. Reserved. C. Positive. D. Objective.

    60. Which of the following could be the best title of the passage?

    A. Immigration and Diversity in America

    B. American Modern Culture and Art

    C. Famous American Artists and Writers

    D. The United States—A Developed Country

    B

One day I was driving a group of friends to a family seminar (研讨会) in Holmes County, Ohio. The village of Berlin was about an hour from our home. The seminar is usually half a day except on Saturday. In my hurry, I left the house without cash and without food. I comforted myself with the thought that I could go without and it would allow me to concentrate more on the rich teaching that I would receive. It was a beautiful day and the drive was pleasant through countryside. I enjoyed conversation with my friends about the things of the Lord as we drove. When we arrived I found my place and settled in to enjoy the seminar. The morning passed swiftly and I noticed no hunger. When the noon hour came I went to the van (面包车) to spend some time alone with the Lord. On the church grounds and in the shade of the tree people began to open large picnic baskets. I knew it would be impossible to think about this feast going on in front of me.

I started the van and drove into the village of Berlin. I found the Christian bookstore and spent some time browsing among the books. One of my favorite places on earth is a good bookstore. Standing there I sensed someone behind me. I turned and was shocked to see Lois standing there. She smiled “I couldn’t stand the thought of you going hungry so I brought you some money.” My heart welled up with love for her in that moment. We ate lunch and kissed goodbye. I went back to the seminar and she made the hour-long trip back home.

The two things stand out in my mind. First, Lois would know that I was hungry so I would not have to go without food. Second, when she went to the church and saw I was gone she knew exactly where she would find me.

    61. Which of the following is the best title for the passage?

    A. Known And Loved

    B. A Family Seminar

    C. A Good Lunch

    D. Surprised And Interested

    A. To read some books about the Lord.

    B. To meet his good friend—Lois.

    C. To buy some books for his friends.

    D. To kill the lunchtime in the bookstore.

    64. The underlined words “welled up” in the second paragraph mean .

    A. appeared suddenly B. became stronger C. beat fast D. felt content

    A. could go well without one or two meals

    B. would share everything with his friends

    C. might stay in the church for the noon

    C

Alexander Scott, who lived in Pennsylvania, is regarded as a hero because she thought of others before herself. Alex’s goal was to find a cure for people with cancer. Alexander Scott was four years old when she started her own lemonade (柠檬水) stand. While she was too weak to fight it off, she was still strong inside. Alex raised thousands of dollars for cancer research.

Alex was born in 1996. When Alex was just a baby they found a tumor (肿瘤) on her back and then they removed it. Two days before Alexander Scott’s first birthday she was diagnosed with neroblastoma, a form of childhood cancer. Alex has tried so hard to fight her cancer.

When Alex was four years old, she was trying to find a cure to help others. That’s when Alex had the idea to start her own lemonade stand. She opened her first lemonade stand in July of 2000. In her first year she raised $2,000. As word spread Alex started to get more and more donations from people. Alexander Scott has raised more than $900,000 for pediatric cancer.

The kind of hero Alexander is hero to others near and far. While Alex was trying to fight off cancer, she raised over $700,000. Her goal was $1,000,000 for cancer. Most of it was from people that donated money to help find a cure for cancer. Another reason is that when people saw Alex started to have a lemonade stand to help others, they started to do the same thing. Today there are about 200 lemonade stands held to raise money for cancer. After Alex met her goal she’s probably going to save a lot of children and adults’ lives.

That’s why people keep going on with her goal. Maybe we can meet her goal by donating money and helping others so you can find a cure for cancer. If you want to help Alex Scott you can click her own web site www.alexslemonade.com. There are a lot of pictures, and facts about Alex Scott. Sad but true Alex died on August 1, 2004 from neroblastoma cancer when she was 8 years old.

    66. Alexander Scott was regarded as a hero .

    A. because she started her own lemonade stand at four

    B. because she did a lot for cancer research

    C. because she fought against cancer for a life

    D. because she suffered a lot from cancer

    A. when she was just a baby at less than ten months.

    B. when she was barely past her first birthday.

    C. when she was almost twelve months.

    第四部分 任务型阅读(共10小题;每小题1分,满分10分)

    请认真阅读下面短文,并根据所读内容在文章后表格中的空格里填入一个最恰当的单词。

    注意:每个空格只填一个单词。

WARNING: Holding a cellphone against your ear or storing it in your pocket may be dangerous to your health.

This paraphrases (解释) a warning that cellphone manufacturers include in the small print that is often taken for granted when a new phone is purchased. Apple, for example, doesn’t want iPhones to come closer to you than 1.5 centimeters. Research In Motion, BlackBerry’s manufacturer, recommends 2.5 centimeters.

If health issues arise from cellphone use, the results are serious. Voice calls—Americans chat on cellphones 2.26 trillion minutes annually—bring in $109 billion for the wireless carriers.

Devra Davis, who has worked for the University of Pittsburgh, has published a book about cellphone radiation, “Disconnect.” The book surveys scientific research and concludes the question is not settled.

Brain cancer is a concern that Ms. Davis examines. Over all, there has not been an increase in its incidence since cellphones arrived. But the average covers an increase in brain cancer in the 20-to-29 age group and a drop for the older population.

“Most cancers have multiple causes,” she says, but she points to laboratory research that suggests low-energy radiation could damage cells that could possibly lead to cancer.

Children are more vulnerable (易受伤害的) to radiation than adults, Ms. Davis and other scientists point out. Radiation that enters the brain of an adult only five centimeters will reach much deeper into the brains of children because their skulls are thinner and their brains contain more absorptive fluid. No studies have yet been completed on cellphone radiation and children, she says.

Henry Lai, a research professor in the bioengineering department at the University of Washington, began laboratory radiation studies in 1980 and found that rats exposed to radiofrequency radiation had damaged DNA in their brains.

Ms. Davis recommends using wired headsets or the phone’s speaker. Children should send text message rather than call, she said, and pregnant women should keep phones away from the abdomen (腹部).

    Marks Do Not Mean Everything

It is common that many students’ parents and teachers consider marks as everything, but in fact, marks only show whether one gains more or less achievement in a certain period. It does not mean students who get high marks are top or excellent ones. What’s more, marks can be truly improved if you work hard at your lessons. However hard you feel at present, you will be happy in the future,so you should adjust your mind to reality and make up your mind to make progress. As a matter of fact, if you put your heart into your study, whatever the result is, there is nothing left for you to regret.
