David Chipperfield, the British designer knwn fr his minimalist and inclusive spaces, has wn the Pritzker Prize, ften called “the Nbel Prize f architecture”. With this hnr, he jins the cmpany f grundbreaking designers such as Frank Gehry, Zaha Hadid, Richard Rgers and Oscar Niemeyer.
Chipperfield has distinguished his wrks by creating sharp, minimalist scially cnscius buildings. The Pritzker cmmittee wrte, “His architectural language balances cnsistency with the fundamental design principles and flexibility twards the lcal cultures ... The wrk f David Chipperfield harmnizes Eurpean classicism, the cmplex nature f Britain and even the delicateness f Japan.”
In 1997, Chipperfield’s firm was chsen t renvate Berlin’s Neues Museum, which was a mess lng after being damaged by Wrld War I. Chipperfield apprached the prject in hnr f the building’s histry. Fr mre than a decade, he searched thrugh stnes and bricks frm the riginal structure fr pieces t use, sme f which had bullet(子弹) hles in them.
The architect has applied the same belief t his recent wrks, including the expansin f the Ryal Academy f Arts in Lndn, where he renvated galleries, created a new auditrium(礼堂) and built a cncrete bridge t cnnect its riginal buildings.
“While sme architects may use the attentin that cmes with the Pritzker Prize t g big and advance their cmmercial ambitins, Chipperfield’s win is unlikely t result in steel-and-glass supertall skyscrapers,” writes Blmberg’s Kristn Capps.
Instead, Chipperfield says he will wrk harder t create architecture that has a specific missin. “I regard this award as an encuragement, cntinuing t direct my attentin nt nly t the substance f architecture and its meaning but als t the cntributin that we can make as architects t address the existing challenges f climate change and scial inequality,” he says in a statement. He adds, “We must rise t these challenges and help inspire the next generatin t shulder this respnsibility with visin and curage.”

Read a few news headlines and yu’ll see sme cmmn themes: the rising number f languages dying wrldwide, the islatin f individual last speakers, and the wider cultural lss fr humanity. These stries ften mentin hw peple try t prtect such languages. Hwever, they tend t fcus less n hw such effrts actually help speakers f endangered languages. Such effrts smetimes help, smetimes harm, and smetimes d bth.
Encuraging smene t keep speaking a declining minrity language culd certainly bst his r her sense f identity. But when a bigger language is adpted smewhere, it desn’t remve everything that came befre. Often, intense cntact between big and small languages leads t a new mixture - fr example, Sheng in Kenya and Tstsitaal in Suth Africa. In ther cases, such language cntact results in a new lcalized dialect. As linguist Peter Trudgill argues, this can als hld a highly lcal identity.
Sure enugh, enabling a peple t use their traditinal language can make them feel better abut themselves. But is it really helping them? Simply adding yur ancestral language as a new schl subject isn’t very helpful if yur schl is falling dwn, r yu’re nt eating well. T think anything much can be slved just by perfrming CPR (心肺复苏) in a minrity language is t ignre hw cmplicated human sciety is and hw many different simultaneus (同时的) needs we have.
In Québec, Canada, just under 75% f residents have French as their native language, but the percentage has fallen ver the past five years. In 2022, the Québec Legislature passed Bill 96, which requires peple t nly use French fr fficial speech and writing. This is an example f the priritizatin f language, yet it’s unclear whether the law will actually imprve Québec residents’ lives, r even help preserve French in Québec.
S prmting endangered languages can be a psitive frce, but we shuldn’t assume that’s universally true. It is especially difficult fr a language expert t say s. Perhaps we shuld fcus less n languages themselves, and pay mre attentin t the lives f the peple wh speak them.
28.What d the news stries abut languages usually fcus n?
A.The effrts t save endangered languages.
B.The future develpment f ur languages.
C.The cultural functins f languages wrldwide.
D.The prblem with prmting language unifrmity.
29.What can a bigger adpted language bring abut accrding t Peter Trudgill?
A.The separatin frm the past.B.The enrichment f lcal cultures.
    C.The lss f scial interactin.D.The preservatin f peple’s identity.
30.What can be inferred abut saving endangered languages?
A.It will take ages t see its effect.
B.It requires mre attentin t native speakers.
    C.It will guarantee a win-win result.
D.It needs mre fcus n languages themselves.
31.Which f the fllwing is the best title fr the text?
A.Hw t Imprve Minrity Language Speakers’ Life
B.Hw t Bst Minrity Language speakers’ Identity
C.Prmtin f French in Canada: Fruitful r Fruitless
D.Endangered Language Prtectin: Helpful r Harmful

In America, the “Big Dig”, a highway prject that resulted in a mess f traffic in the centre f Bstn fr years, came in five times ver its initial budget. Even the Germans get huge prjects wrng. Cnceptin t peratin f Berlin Brandenburg Airprt has taken 30 years, with seven missed pening dates. The airprt ended up csting $8.2 billin. Hwever, the riginal estimate was abut $2.7 billin.
Huge prjects like Berlin Brandenburg Airprt are the subject f an amusing new bk called Hw Big Things Get Dne by Bent Flyvbjerg and Dan Gardner. Mr. Flyvbjerg sets up a database f ver 16, 000 prjects and data analysis reveals that nly 8.5% f the prjects meet their initial estimates n cst and time, and 0.5% f them achieve what they set ut t d n cst, time and benefits.
Over-ptimistic time and cst estimates riginate frm bth psychlgical and plitical perceptins: the reliance n intuitin (直觉) rather than data, and a prblem that Mr. Flyvbjerg calls “strategic misrepresentatin”. This is when budgets are intentinally reduced in rder t get things ging. And nce the prjects are under way, they will nt be stpped, because mney spent n them will thus be wasted.
Mr. Flyvbjerg speaks highly f Pixar’s methdical apprach t develping and testing films in great detail befre they g int prductin. He als tells the stry f hw Frank Gehry’s well-develped architectural mdels helped ensure the success f the Guggenheim Museum in Bilba. Narrwing dwn the prducing windw f a prject befre it is actually carried ut reduces the prbability f unexpected events.
Big custmized prjects are particularly likely t run int truble. Hwever, the mre a prject can be divided int standardized prcesses, the better its prspects are. Prjects run int prblems fr specific reasns as well as general nes: Britain’s truble is nt smething that China has t wrry abut, fr instance. But the irn law is that if yu plan strictly and standardize where pssible, yu are less likely t dig yurself int a hle.
32.Hw des the authr intrduce the tpic f the passage?
    A.By making a cntrast.B.By giving an explanatin.
C.By presenting examples.D.By shwing an experience.
33.What message des Bent Flyvbjerg’s data analysis cnvey?
A.Prjects’ success rates can be estimated.
B.Prjects’ desired utcme can’t be achieved.
C.Mst prjects suffer verspending and delays.
D.Mst prjects lack cmprehensive data analysis.
34.What is paragraph 3 mainly abut?
    A.Failures in decisin-making.B.Methds f reducing massive csts.
C.Strategies fr getting wrk dne.D.Reasns behind inaccurate estimates.
35.What is the key t preventing prjects getting int truble?
    A.Planning thrughly in advance.
    B.Analyzing specific and general reasns.
    C.Fcusing n efficiency f prjects.
    D.Drawing lessns frm frmer experiences.

We were driving acrss the big state f Texas n ur way t Califrnia. Suddenly, ur car cughed and then stpped.
