    This is the secnd perid f this unit which fcuses n language. In this perid,several exercises abut language n the textbk will be dealt with. Sme imprtant language pints in the warming up and reading will be explained in detail.
    Language is the part which is tested much in any examinatin. Instead f remembering wrds and phrases inflexibly,using them crrectly shuld be the target.S this perid shuld be taught with this purpse.
    At the beginning f the lessn,hmewrk will be checked. After that,students are required t recall the infrmatin n the cntent f the passage. By ding s,students can get mre chances t practice their spken language. Then the exercises n language will be dealt with. In this part,students are expected t learn t use the wrds and phrases in the warming-up and cmprehending. There are varius types f exercises n wrds and expressins. Besides,there is an exercise abut prepsitins in Am. English and Br .English. And it ffers a listening practice n differences between Am. English and Br. English.
    T let students master wrds and phrases better,I’ll present mre detailed explanatins abut hw t use them in practice by ffering sme examples. After that,students shuld practise using them by making up sentences. With this methd,students can master the wrds and phrases better.

    Greet the whle class as usual.
    T:Yesterday we learnt a passage and I asked yu t finish the cmprehending exercises. Wh can tell me the answer?

    T:Great! Nw wh can retell the cntent f the passage t us?
    S:Let me try. English is used mre and mre tday. The number f the peple speaking it is increasing rapidly. China has the biggest number f English speakers. Hwever,even tw native speakers d nt speak the same English because there are many kinds f English. That is caused by cmmunicatin f culture. S actually even they can nt understand everything they say. Besides being spken as the native tngue,English is als used as a freign r 2nd language in many ther cuntries. In a wrd,it is mre and mre imprtant.
    Step 2 Learning abut language
    T:Yu did such a gd jb. Yu have mastered the text quite well. This perid we will try t master the useful wrds and expressins in the first perid. First let’s d exercise 1 in the part f learning abut language. Please read the wrd r phrase and then match it with the right meaning.

    American English and British English
    Written English is mre r less the same in bth Britain and the USA,and in everyday speech the tw peples have little difficulty in understanding ne anther. In fact,the Americans have explred a large number f their wrds and phrases t Britain—thrugh literature,the mvies,TV,American sldiers during bth wrld wars and turists. The fllwing wrds and phrases are f American rigin:teenager,byfriend,radi,right away,way f life,etc.
    Sme f the wrds that Americans nw use cme frm the languages f their immigrants,particularly frm the Germans. The basic meaning f “dumb” in bth British and American English,is “unable t speak”.In the USA,it acquired a secnd meaning “stupid”,straight frm the German “damn” (stupid),and this secnd meaning has nw crssed the Atlantic t Britain.
    Of curse,there are sme American wrds that are peculiar t the USA and are quite different frm their equivalents in the rest f the English-speaking wrld. Here is a list f sme f the mst imprtant.
    The wrds fr the “tilet” can als cause cnfusin,althugh the wrd “tilet” itself is cmmn t bth languages
    There are cmplicatins,t,with the time,the date with numbers.
    There are a number f differences between American and British English in the spelling f wrds,e.g. check(US)/cheque(UK),center(US)/center(UK).Many American English wrds ending in “r”,e.g. hnr,vigr,labr are spelt in British English with an “ur”,e.g. hnur,vigur,labur. In American English,“practice” is used bth fr the verb and nun. In British English,the verb is spelt “practise”,and the nun “practice”.In the main,American English avids the dubling up f cnsnauts in nuns and verbs while British English des nt. In American English,fr example,ne writes “travel,traveled,traveling,traveler”,while in British English ne writes “travel,travelled,travelling,traveller”.
    It was nce predicated that British and American English wuld draw s far apart that eventually they wuld becme separate languages. The ppsite has happened. The links between the tw cuntries are s strng that linguistically and culturally t,they are clser tgether than ever.
