    The Learning Tip f this unit is t listen t English mre. S at first,the students will d a listening test. It is a stry abut a survivr f the terrible San Francisc earthquake. After listening,the students are asked t d sme true-r-false exercises and answer sme questins. The step is t imprve the students’ ability t catch the useful infrmatin while listening. Then the students are asked t read after the tape t imitate the prnunciatin and intnatin,which is als a purpse f listening.
    Then the students will sum up what they have learned in this unit,including the knwledge abut the earthquakes,useful wrds,phrases expressins and new grammar items. The students shuld frequently lk back n what they have learned. Only in this way can they learn the language better.
    At last the students will d a prject. This requires the students t put what they have learned in this unit int use. The students will first discuss the prject in grups f fur. Then they will frm different grups and tell the new grup members their plan. This step is t train the students’ speaking ability as well as the ability t cperate with thers. It als requires the students t reasn what they are planning t d.

    Step 1 Greetings
    Greet the whle class as usual.
    Step 2 Listening
    T:In the last perid we learned a passage written by an eyewitness abut the terrible San Francisc earthquake in 1906.Tday we will listen t a stry tld by a man wh was a survivr f the earthquake.Listen t the tape the first time,and try t tell whether the statements in Part 1 are true r false.
    (Teacher plays the tape fr the students t listen and finish the task.)
    (After listening,the teacher checks the answers with the class.)
    T:Nw let’s listen t the tape again. This time yu shuld try t crrect the statements that are false.
    (Teacher checks the answers with the students after listening.)
    T:Let’s listen t the tape the third time and try t answer the questins in Part 2.
    (After listening,the teacher checks the answers.)
    T:While listening t the tape,yu shuld nt nly pay attentin t the cntents,but als the prnunciatin and intnatin. Next,I will play the tape again. Yu shuld mark liaisn and incmplete explsin in the sentences in Part 3.Then practice reading them alud.
    (Students listen and read. Meanwhile,the teacher ges arund the classrm t crrect any mistakes that the students may make.)
    Step 3 Learning tip
    T:In rder t learn a language well,yu shuld d a lt f practice,including listening,speaking,reading and writing. Only when we understand what is said t us can we have a cnversatin with smebdy. S listening t English is very imprtant. After class,yu shuld listen t the English news n the radi r watch the news n CCTV Internatinal. Yu will nt nly get a lt f infrmatin abut what is happening arund the wrld,but als imprve yur listening and learn mre English wrds and expressins. At the same time,yu will imprve yur prnunciatin and intnatin.
    Step 4 Summing up
    T:Nw let’s sum up what yu have learnt in this unit. Wrk with yur partner. First write dwn what yu have learned abut earthquakes. Then write dwn the verbs,nuns,expressins and new grammar items that yu have learned frm this unit.
    (After several minutes the teacher will ask sme individual students t read ut what they have written dwn.)
    Step 5 Prject
    T:By nw yu knw that earthquakes are terrible natural disasters and that China is unlucky enugh t have a lt f them. Hwever,as the example f Tangshan has shwn,peple can find hpe fr a brighter future even after a bad earthquake. Wrk in grups f fur. First share what yu have learned abut earthquakes with yur grup members.

    T:Nw imagine that yur grup lives in a city that has been hit by an earthquake. Yur grup is given the jb t build a new city. Make a list f things that need t be dne. Decide what things must be dne first and what things can be dne later. The list f things n Page 68 shuld be cnsidered. Maybe yu will have different pinins with ther grup members. Remember t give reasns fr what yu have chsen.
    (Ss discuss in grups,while the teacher gets arund the classrm and helps the students deal with any difficulties they may have.)
    T:Frm yur grup’s list,chse ne thing that yu cnsider t be the mst imprtant and write dwn yur reasns.

    T:Nw we will make different grups.Number every member f yur grup frm 1 t 4.All the students with N.1 g t ne grup,and all the students with N.2 g t the same grup and the same with students with N.3 and N.4.
    (After the students have frmed new grups.)
    T:Tell yur new grup members the thing that yu have chsen and the reasns. Then each grup shuld make a list f three mst imprtant things.
    (After several minutes the teacher checks the students’ answers.)
    (The answers can be varius. But each grup must prvide enugh reasns fr the things that they have chsen.)

    A Circus Disaster
    July 6,1944,was a day f nightmare(噩梦) that I will never frget.That afternn when I was making up my face in a dressing tent at the mment,I suddenly heard smene run past shuting “Fire! ” Fire was what we circus(马戏团) peple mst feared fr there was a large audience in the tent,including many children.I rushed twards the tent with a bucket but I culd d nthing with it since the tent was burning t high and the flames spreading quickly.
    In the burning tent was a scene f panic(恐慌):peple rushed twards the exits,and sme even jumped twelve feet frm the tp rws f the grandstand t the grund utside.Sme peple,after getting ut,tried t re-enter t help their relatives r friends.Yet it was impssible fr them t get thrugh the crwd;instead,they blcked the way,I fught at ne exit,shuting at the tp f my lungs.“G n! Keep mving!” At every exit,circus peple were ding the same thing.In the midst f this scene,the musicians kept n playing until the tent was a fire verhead.
    City fire equipment finally arrived and put ut the fire.All the circus peple were safe thugh sme were bruised(撞伤) r burned during the rescue wrk.The audience,hwever,were nt that lucky.In a panic,they all tried t use the regular exits thrugh which they had entered the rent.As a result,168 peple had died in the fire ─the wrst circus disaster in histry.
