The History of the Olympic Games

    Olympia

Olympia, the site of the ancient Olympic Games, is in the western part of the Peloponnese. It was used as a meeting place for worship(敬仰)and other religious(宗教的)and political practices as early as the 10th century B. C. . But until the 4th century B. C. it was used as training sites for the athletes or to house the judges of the Games.

    The Games and religion

The Olympic Games were closely linked to the religious festivals of the worship of Zeus. Indeed, they also aimed to show the physical qualities and development of the performances accomplished by young people, as well as encouraging good relations between the cities of Greece. According to specialists, the Olympic Games owed their purity and importance to religion.

    Victory ceremonies

The Olympic victor received his first awards immediately after the competition. Following the announcement of the winner’s name by the herald, a Hellanodikis(Greek judge)would place a palm branch in his hands, while the audience cheered and threw flowers to him. Red ribbons(丝带)were tied on his head and hands as a mark of victory.

The official award ceremony would take place on the last day of the Games, at the front hall of the temple of Zeus. In a loud voice, the herald would announce the name of the Olympic winner, his father’s name, and his homeland. Then, the Hellanodikis placed the sacred olive wreath on the winner’s head.

With food shortage(短缺)across Russia, some Russians are growing their own vegetables. The country’s struggling economy(经济)has kept food prices rising and put millions of people in poverty. Russians who live in traditional country homes called dachas often live on their own food. Today, many Russian families are trying to grow food in order to support themselves.

Irina Bulozhenko lives and works in Moscow. “My grandma grows lots of things like cabbage and beets. I am cooking borscht right now and I am using our beets and carrots. So we are able to get by on what we have grown in the summer. ”

But for some families, growing their own food is still not enough. As a result, Russian volunteers have set up Food-sharing program. The food is donated(捐赠)by restaurants or individuals, and given to those in need.

Food-sharing volunteer Svetlana Kalmykova said the program was just getting started. But she believed it could go a long way. “I think that food-sharing has a big future and big prospects(前景)in Russia. The key point is to inform the public about it, so that people learn what it is and what is needed to be done. I think that many will join. ”

Tatyana Golubyeva said that receiving food through the program has become important to her family. “We spend now a lot less on food than before, when we did not know about Food-sharing and did not use it. Now we hope that we’ll get not only bread, but some other food. ”She noted that the donations have cut the amount her family spends on food in half.

There was once a kangaroo who became an athletic champion(冠军). However, with this success, he became arrogant(傲慢), and he spent a lot of time making fun of others. His favorite target was a little penguin(企鹅)whose walk was so slow that it often prevented him from even finishing the race.

One day, the fox who organized the races, let everyone know that his favourite for the next race was the penguin. Everyone thought it was a joke, but still the big-headed kangaroo got very angry, and he ridiculed the penguin even more than usual. The penguin did not even want to take part in the race, but it was a tradition that everyone must do so. On the day of the race, he approached the starting line in a group which was following the fox. The fox led all the animals up to the mountain, while everyone made fun of the penguin, saying that he would roll down the mountain.

But when they reached the top they all shut up. The top of the mountain turned out to be a crater(火山口)that had filled with water, making it into a lake. At this point, the fox gave the starting signal, saying, “First to the other side wins. ”

The penguin, excited, waddled(摇摆地行走)clumsily to the water’s edge. Once he was in the water, though, his speed was unbeatable, and he won the race by a long distance. Meanwhile the kangaroo hardly managed to reach the other side. And although it seemed like the penguin was waiting to make fun of the kangaroo, the penguin had learned a lot from his suffering, and instead of ridiculing the kangaroo, he offered to teach him how to swim.

    . 阅读填句

      根据短文内容, 从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。

Last September, I am faced with my sixth new class. I became used to teaching and no longer feared. 1 At the end of the first day, several parents came to see me. They had a problem with the school’s arrangement for a school trip. I didn’t know the details, so I didn’t have the answers they needed. After being questioned and laughed at, they realized that I wasn’t the correct person to deal with their problem and left, except one parent who wanted a word on a different matter.

This parent said her child was dyslexic(诵读困难的)and found reading a challenge(挑战). 2 However, I’d already been troubled by those parents and didn’t want to suggest something that couldn’t be done. After all, it was the first day. So I explained that I needed to work first with the student in order to develop a plan. 3 It was not until I made a promise that she felt willing to leave, making me upset and discouraged.

Throughout the year, I was often questioned and laughed at by the parents and was often spoken to rudely by them. However, I always kept me cool, knew about the child’s needs and made sure that I knew about all of my students. 4 I worked with other teachers to help the student progress. By the end of the year, the child had made great progress and he found a love of reading. I even got a sincere thank-you card from the parents.

After the unhappy experience, I know it was nice to finish the year in a positive way. From this, I learnt that teaching is about giving each child the best learning possible and not being discouraged by a parent’s hostility(敌意). 5

    A. She was not happy with this.

    B. But that year started differently.

    C. It seemed that everything went well.

    D. I made a good plan for the dyslexic child.

    E. The students’ progress is just teachers’ pleasure.

    F. She wanted to know how I would help her child.

    G. Nothing is more exciting than achieving success.

    3. 【解析】A。
