    第一节  阅读理解

    阅读下列短文,从每题所给的四个选项(ABCD)中,选出最佳选项。

    A

Soccer has long been a popular pastime around the world. According to the Bleacher Report on the Most Popular Sports in 2020, soccer is the most followed sport in 93 countries and areas with a combined population of 2 billion. How did the most popular game on earth begin?

Records of soccer games date back to more than 2,000 years ago in Greece and China, according to the Encyclopedia Britannica大英百科全书),Chinese cuju was one of the earliest forms of soccer, first mentioned during the Warring States Period 403-221 BC. In this ancient game, the players were not allowed the use of arms and hands. The goal was a net on bamboo sticks and the team with more goals won. The game's balls were made of leather and stuffed with hair or fur.

In 14th and 15th century Europe, "folk soccer" was usually played on Easter. Whole villages would compete against one another by kicking, throwing or carrying a leather or wooden ball across city streets, streams, fields and gateways into a “portal 入口" of the opposing village's church. These games had few rules and were violent.

The modem form of soccer appeared in mid-19th century England. Attempts to standardize soccer's rules of play were made at the University of Cambridge as early as 1843. Twenty years later, meetings with clubs from London and surrounding counties resulted in printed rules for the game, which forbade carrying the ball.

As soccer spread throughout Europe by the early 20th century, the game was in need of international organization. This led to the founding of FIFA in 1904 with the cooperation of soccerassociations from seven European countries. There are now more than 200 national soccer teams with official FIFA membership, which is more than the number of actual independent countries in the world. This is because teams that became members in the past are allowed to stay on. For example, England and Scotland are two separate FIFA members.

    1. What can we learn about "Cuju" from the passage?

    A. It was brought in from Greece.

    B. Its ball was made from bamboo sticks.

    C. It shared some key similarities to modem soccer.

    D. It was introduced into Greece over 2000 years ago.

    2. When were the printed rules for soccer made?

    A. In 1843.      B. In 1863.

    C. In the 14th century.    D. In the early 20th century.

    3. What is the author's purpose of writing the text?

    A. To explain how FIFA was founded.

    B. To compare soccer in different countries.

    C. To encourage more people to play soccer.

    D. To introduce the origin and development of soccer.

    B

Warming temperatures and changing rainfall patterns may reduce diet diversity among children around the world and may even destroy efforts to improve food security. Researchers analyzed the results of health surveys from more than 107,000 children in 19 countries - in Asia; North, south-east and West Africa; as well as Central and South America.

In the surveys, the diversity of a child's diet was quantified 量化based on their intake of foods from different food categories, including grains, milk products and meat. On average, 3.2 food categories out of 10 were consumed by the children aged 5 and under, but the situation varied from country to country. Children in Colombia ate from 4.8 food categories on average, while those in Lesotho ate from just 1.8.

To study whether climate affected the diversity of the children's diets, the researchers linked the results from each country to 30 years of rainfall and temperature data in the surveyed areas. They found that long-term higher temperatures were associated with lower diet diversity for children everywhere except Central America.

There were also shorter-term trends. In North Africa and South America, there was typically a reduction in diet diversity in countries that experienced above-average temperatures the year before the survey. In Central America and West Africa, diets typically became more diverse in countries that experienced above-average rainfall in the previous year. In some countries, the researchers say that the negative effects of climate change on diet diversity was great, and they may even destroy efforts to improve food security.

Diet diversity is a useful standard for areas with high rates of child malnutrition 营养不良),says Daniel Mason D'Croz, an Australian researcher. "Children need a fruit or a vegetable or animal product besides the rice --- that's an important thing for people to know," he says. And he also added that recent follow-up studies have provided more authoritative evidence of the effect of climate change on reducing diet diversity.

    4. Why did researchers study the data of rainfall and temperature in the surveyed areas?

A To learn the diversity of a child's diet from different countries.

    B. To confirm the negative effects of climate on food production.

    C. To explore the effects of climate on the children's diets diversity.

    D. To link the rainfall and temperature data to lower food categories.

    5. What does the underlined word "they" in Paragraph 4 refer to ?

    A. The researchers. B. Some countries.

    C. The negative effects. D. Above-average temperatures.

    6. What can we infer from the last two paragraphs?

    A. Children need fruits or vegetables except the rice.

    B. Reducing diet diversity may cause child malnutrition.

    C. Higher temperatures will make the diet more diverse.

    D. Above-average rainfall leads to reducing diet diversity.

    7. What could be the best title of the text?

    A. Children's Diet Will Be Influenced by Rainfall

    B. Food Security Varies from Country to Country

    C. Climate May Affect the Diversity of Children's Diet

    D. Scientists Are Making Efforts to Vary Children's Diet
