    Peple in Amsterdam have been enjying the benefits f cycling fr years. The idea began abut 50 years ag, and was first knwn as “white bikes”. Amsterdam is a gd city fr cycling because it’s flat and therefre cnvenient fr bikes. There are als plenty f places fr bicycle parking and mst streets in the city centre have a bicycle path. Because f its cnvenience fr bicycles, Amsterdam has becme very ppular with cyclists—an amazing 38% f all trips are made by bike. Sme peple even call Amsterdam “the City f Bicycles”.

    Where did the idea f “ white bikes” cme frm? In the 1960s, a grup f cycling fans came up with an idea. They believed that it wuld be better fr everybdy if cars weren’t allwed in the city centre and nly bicycles were. They were hpeful that this wuld help t save energy, reduce pllutin and prvide free public transprt.

    The grup painted hundreds f bicycles white and placed them in many areas arund Amsterdam fr peple t use. Anyne was allwed t take them and use them fr shrt jurneys. Peple wuld leave the bike in the place where they finished their jurney, s that smene else culd then take it and use is frm there. Sn after, hwever, prblems came up and the “ white bikes” all disappeared—thieves stle them all in a matter f weeks!

    In 1999, the “white bikes” returned t Amsterdam— this time with a cmputer tracking system t recrd their every mve! T take a bicycle, yu had t put in a special card. The new “ white bikes” were nt actually white but painted in bright clurs. The bikes were parked at special parking places. Thus peple wh wanted t use them had t take them t anther special parking place near their destinatin and leave them there.

    Thanks t the ideas and effrts f many peple, like the cycling fans f the 1960s and thse wh enabled the return f “ white bikes”, yu can nw enjy clean air and easy transprt in central Amsterdam.
    Nwadays, the idea f “white bikes” has pedalled its way arund the wrld and there has been a glbal increase in bike-sharing.
    In China, mre and mre cities have their wn “white bike” prgrammes. Bth the lcals and turists like t use shared bikes because bike-sharing is a cheap and easy way t save energy, reduce air and nise pllutin, and enjy the benefits f exercise in cities. Hwever, prblems can als develp, like the theft f bikes and parking issues. Frtunately, peple are trying different ways f slving thse prblems. Where will bike-sharing g in China? Yu decide.
