A nickname is a shortened form of a person’s name. A nickname can also be a descriptive name for a person, place or thing. Many American cities have nicknames.
Los Angeles has several nicknames. One is simply the city’s initials(首字母), LA.It is also called “The City of Angels” because Los Angeles means “the angels” in Spanish.
Los Angeles often has warm, sunny weather. So another nickname is “City of Flowers and Sunshine”. New York is called“The Big Apple”. So Los Angeles is sometimes called“The Big Orange”because of the fruit that grows in that city’s warm climate.
The American motion picture(电影) and television industries are based in Los Angeles. So it is not surprising that it is called“The Entertainment Capital of the World”. Many films are made in the area of Los Angeles called Hollywood. Millions of people visit the area. No trip to Los Angeles is complete without seeing the word “Hollywood”spelled out in huge letters on a hillside.
Many movie stars live in Los Angeles. The city is sometimes called “Tinseltown”. This nickname comes from the shiny, bright and often unreal nature of Hollywood and the movie industry.
Another nickname for Los Angeles is“LaLa Land” using the first letters of Los and Angeles. This means a place that is fun and not serious, and maybe even out of touch with reality.
The city of Los Angeles is part of Los Angeles County. There are many smaller cities in the county. Beverly Hills, with its rich people, is one of them. So is Pasadena, with its Rose Parade each New Year’s Day.
A good place for watching unusuallooking people is Venice, an area on the west side of Los Angeles. A system of waterways designed after the Italian city of Venice has been built there.
24.What’s the purpose of the first paragraph?
A.To tell us what a nickname is.
B.To prove that nicknames are popular.
C.To lead us into the topic to be presented.
D.To tell us some people’s nicknames.
25.Which of the following is NOT the nickname for Los Angeles in the passage?
A.LA. B.City of Flowers and Sunshine.
C.The City of Angels. D.The Big Apple.
26.Why is Los Angeles called “The Entertainment Capital of the World”?
A.Because Los Angeles often has warm, sunny weather.
B.Because many movie stars live in Los Angeles.
C.Because there are many smaller cities in the county.
D.Because the American motion picture and television industries are there.
27.The underlined part “out of touch with reality” in Paragraph 6 can probably be replaced by “________”.
    A.real B.false C.fantastic D.practical

    C
This is not something new. You’re sitting at the dinner table with your dog touching your feet. You know you shouldn’t give dogs human food. But when you look down, you find that those lovely puppy eyes are almost impossible to say “no” to. So you give it some food.
What is it about a dog’s loving gaze(凝视) that makes it so lovely? A new study by a scientist Miho Nagasawa seems to have found the answer. He found it has to do with something called the cuddle(拥抱) chemical. The cuddle chemical in the blood encourages connection. Levels of it increase, for example, when a parent hugs a newborn baby. According to Nagasawa’s study, levels of the cuddle chemical can also go up when we look deeply into the eyes of a dog.
In order to better understand how the cuddle chemical works between dogs and humans, Nagasawa and his team did an experiment. They tested levels of the cuddle chemical in dogs and humans, and then put them in a room to interact with each other.
While in the room, the humans petted the dogs, spoke to the dogs, and looked into the dogs’ eyes. Then the scientists tested their levels of the cuddle chemical again. They found that levels of the cuddle chemical were higher in both humans and dogs after they interacted. However, levels were the highest in the humans and dogs that simply looked into each other’s eyes, without much petting or talking.
Simply put, the longer the humans look into the eyes of the dogs, the more the cuddle chemical is produced. Nagasawa did the same experiment with humans and wolves, but it did not give the same results.
28.According to the author, the fact mentioned in Para. 1 is________.
    A.special B.surprising C.common D.boring
29.Why did Nagasawa and his team do the first experiment?
A.To find how the cuddle chemical affects humans.
B.To help humans get along well with animals.
C.To make good use of the cuddle chemical.
D.To learn more about the cuddle chemical.
30.The level of the cuddle chemical in humans will not increase when________.
A.they talk to a wolf B.they play with a dog
C.they hug newborn babies D.they look into a dog’s eyes
31.The passage is probably taken from ________.
A.a story book B.a science magazine
    C.science fiction D.a text book
    D
Eating chips, chocolates and cakes may damage a child’s intelligence, according to researchers at Bristol University. Their study suggests a link between diet high in processed(加工的) food and a slightly lower IQ. Writing in the journal of Epidemiology and Community Health, they suggest poor nutrition may affect brain development.
The eating habits of 3,966 children taking part in the Avon Longitudinal Study of Parents and Children were recorded at the ages of three, four, seven and eight and a half. The researchers said three types of diet appeared: processed diet which was high in fat and sugar and fast food, traditional diet of meat, potatoes and vegetables, and healthy diet of salads, fruit and fish. The children all took IQ tests when they were eight and a half.
The researchers found a link between IQ and diet, even after taking into consideration other factors such as the mother’s level of education and the social class. Diet high in processed food at the age of three was related to a slightly lower IQ at the age of eight and a half, suggesting early eating habits had a long-term influence. Dr Pauline Emmett, who carried out the study at Bristol University, said, “Brain development is much faster in early life, and it’s when it does most of its growing.”
Although the relationship between diet and IQ was very strong, the influence was quite small. Processed food was linked with IQs only a few points lower. Experts in the field said the results had shown common sense was right. Fiona Ford, spokesperson for the British Dietetic Association, said, “It’s well worth looking at the long-term influence of diet, for everyone’s familiar with the short term. The research agrees with the type of advice we already know, but that’s not always enough. Sometimes a society has to help a person change; we need to educate more young parents about healthy eating.”
32.All the following can lead to a slightly lower IQ except _____.
    A.birthday cakes B.fruit salads
    C.chocolates D.KFC food
33.The longest period of the research on eating habits might reach _____.
    A. one year and a half B.two years and a half
    C. four years and a half D.five years and a half
34.Which of the following agrees with Fiona Ford’s opinion?
    A.Diet affects people’s intelligence greatly.
B.The research has shown the short-term influence of diet.
C.The British Dietetic Association has known the results of the research.
D.The British Dietetic Association has a duty to encourage young parents to
    adopt healthy diet.
35.What does the passage mainly talk about?
    A.Processed food reduces children’s intelligence.
B.Healthy food makes children grow rapidly.
    C.Eating habits change children’s intelligence.
D.Proper diet makes children wise and healthy.

    第二节:读后续写(满分25分)
    阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。
As he lay awake that night, Tony could hear his parents discussing his sister Alice’s birthday. It was just two days away. Birthdays were always a lot of fun, even though there was no money for store-bought gifts. Nearly all of toys he and his sister had were homemade. There was nothing wrong with that, he knew. Like many families in this part, they were poor.
This birthday would be different, though. Alice was older now, and he’d seen how her eyes lit up when she saw the new doll at Honey House, a neighborhood store just down the road from their house.
How he longed for (渴望) her to have it! An idea finally came to him just before he went to bed. After a quick breakfast the following morning, he tied a bag to the handlebars of his bike and headed toward a village hill.
After a long journey, he reached his destination (目的地), the mango (芒果) forest. There were already two other boys there. Tony grabbed his bag and set to work immediately.
The sun was high overhead. The weather was hot and nearly all of the taller trees held ripe mangoes but they were well beyond reach. Tony struggled to climb the trees to pick mangoes, though he fell off many times.
His efforts were sometimes rewarded when a mango dropped into the bag. After a while his neck ached from looking upward, and his arms grew sore (酸疼的). He kept at it, though, and by late afternoon his bag was nearly full.
    注意:
    1. 所续写短文的词数应为150左右。
    2. 续写部分分两段,每段的开头语已为你写好。
    Paragraph 1:
Tony rushed back to Honey House, out of breath, only to find the owner of the store was going to close the door.

    Paragraph 2:
The following morning, Alice walked into the kitchen and took a seat at the breakfast table.

    Dear Jack,
Hearing that you often suffer from colds, I’m writing to offer some advice on how to improve your physical condition.
First of all, you should pay attention to the weather forecast and put on more clothes when necessary. Besides, a balanced diet and enough sleep can help you keep fit. More importantly, you had better take exercise regularly to build up your body. In addition, it is also beneficial to open the window every day to let the fresh air in. Last but not least, do wear masks in public places to reduce the risk of being infected with viruses.
I sincerely hope that the suggestions mentioned above will be of great help to you.

    读后续写
    参考答案
    Paragraph 1:
Tony rushed back to Honey House, out of breath, only to find the owner of the store was going to close the door. Seeing Tony, he told him to come the next day. But Tony didn’t give up and explained all to the owner. Hearing Tony’s explanation, the owner opened the bag to check the mangoes. To Tony’s disappointment, they were not enough to exchange a lovely doll. He was walking out with tears rolling down his face when the owner stopped him and finally agreed because of his love for his sister. After giving many thanks, Tony got his sister a dream present.
    Paragraph 2:
The following morning, Alice walked into the kitchen and took a seat at the breakfast table. She noticed a beautiful box on the table. Curious, she opened the box carefully. To her great surprise, she found the doll she had been dreaming of for a long time. When Tony said happy birthday to her, Alice couldn’t help crying and hugged him tightly. Touched by the warm atmosphere, their parents smiled with pleasure, knowing their son had grown up and was reliable enough to take care of his sister.

M:That's true.I'd like to show you some of her drawings next. Follow me, please.
    Text 8
    W:What are you reading, Mark?
M:I'm reading a news story about a war between beetles and a small town.
W:Sounds fun. What is it about?
M:The town was troubled by beetles recently. Heavy rain and heat waves hit the town in the past week. That encouraged the reproduction of beetles, whose babies developed quickly below the ground.
    W:Are the beetles dangerous?
M:Well, they don't bite people or animals. However, they have strong shells, and tend to run into people as they fly. The locals had to cover their faces while they were outside.
W:Then how did the town deal with the problem?
M:Millions of adult beetles came to the town because they were attracted by its street lights. Therefore, the town shut off its streetlights for several days.
    W:Did that work?
M:Yes.The number of beetles decreased quickly and the locals' life finally returned to normal.
    W:Great news!
    Text 9
W:Henry,I don't want to live in my apartment anymore.
    M:What's the matter, Cindy?
W:Actually, the rent isn’t high but I have a really noisy neighbour. Do you know any available apartments near your home?
M:No. But I know there's an apartment for rent on Princess Street. It's a two-bed room apartment with a large living room. But its kitchen is a bit small
W:That's OK.I seldom cook. Do you know the rent?
    M:Yes.100 pounds a month
W:Well, that's fine with me. I really want to go and have a look at the apartment.
M:I think you can make an appointment with the landlord first.
W:Do you have his phone number?
    M:Yes.It's on my cellphone...

    Text 10
I was staying at a friend's small wooden house. One day, I went hunting at dawn with his dog. I had been at his house for a few days and thought I had got a good knowledge of the local area. But at about 8 am, I realized I was lost in the forest. There was no cellphone coverage. I had no equipment to guide me, and the sky was covered with clouds. I felt frightened and wandered around aimlessly for another hour looking for a familiar landmark, but I was getting nowhere. Being hopeless, I turned to the dog and said, "Let's go home! It's time to eat!" The dog turned around and began to run quickly. I followed him. Fifteen minutes later, we were back at my friend's house. I still remember r how happy I was once I knew I was safe. Now I never go into the woods without enough equipment, and I always let someone know where I'm going and when I expect to return. And yes, the dog ate very well that day.
