    阅读下列短文,从每题所给的ABCD四个选项中,选出最佳选项,并在答题纸上将该项涂黑。

The parents of a troubled teen may feel unsure as to whom to turn to in order to find help for their child. They may feel as if they have tired all of their options, and sometimes they are on the edge of giving up. But there is hope. Schools for troubled teens offer discipline and in some cases, drug treatment programs that can provide important life skills, and more importantly, a fresh start.

    Boarding Schools

When a child is unable to deal with the relative freedom of a standard school day, boarding schools might be a good choice. At boarding schools, the child lives in a dorm setting, where almost every minute of the day is scheduled by school administrators.

    Treatment Centers

When a teenager has an addiction to drugs or alcohol, a residential center that specializes in young people is an outstanding way to help them break the cycle of addiction. Treatment centers feature individual and group counseling to help identify the root causes of the drug problem and help develop the life skills needed to stay clean when the program is over.

    Wilderness Programs

Designed to help improve the discipline and self-reliance of the children, wilderness programs send kids back to nature. By placing them in a foreign and sometimes uncomfortable setting, wilderness programs hope to improve children's behavior. Programs generally include hikes, exercise programs and team building exercises.

    Boot Camps

Boot camps are the most extreme style of school for troubled teens. These facilities are modeled after actual military boot camps, where the individual must get into shape, work as part of a team, and follow a long, hard set of rules and regulations. However, boot camps might not be the best choice for a teen with a drug addiction.

21.Which school will be a good choice if a teenager is addicted to drugs or alcohol?

    A.Boarding Schools.

    C.Wilderness Programs.

    B.Treatment Centers.

    D.Boot Camps.

22.What will teenagers do when they are sent to the Wilderness Programs?

A.They will live in a dorm setting.

B.They will develop the life skills needed to stay clean.

C.They will get into shape, work as part of a team, and follow rules and regulations.

    D. They will go hiking and participate in exercise programs and team building exercises.

23.Who are most likely to be interested in this passage?

    A.Parents.

    B.Teachers

    C.Students

    D.Experts

People appreciate beauty and they want to look nice. She began by buying mascara(睫毛膏)and hair dye to hand out at the soup kitchen, then headed for Skid Row, offering to do people's hair and makeup for free.

Speaking to CNN about Shirley Raines, Cherish said, “No matter what situation you're in, and no matter what you look like, she always shows you love and respect, which makes me feel like a normal human being.”

For Raines and her team, this is their sunny, significant way to reach out and connect to everyone on the street equally. Shirley’s caring, courage and desire to take action have led to making a real impact on people's lives. And she also served as a role model and inspiration to others.

In southeastern Brazil, local fishers walk into dark waters in search of mullet(鲻鱼).On their ownit would be tricky to find the silvery fish. But the humans get help from an unusual partner---wild bottle-nose dolphins,

With nets in hand the fishers patiently wait as their cetacean(鲸类的) partners drive the fish toward the shore. A signal from the dolphins---usually a deep dive---indicates when they should cast their nets. This fishing partnership has passed down through the generations, lasting for more than a century,

While researchers knew humans profited from this pairing, they couldn't confirm whether it benefited the dolphins. Now, in a new study in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, researchers suggest cetaceans that hunt with humans have more chances to live than those that don’t. Human-wildlife cooperation in general is a rare phenomenon at a global scale," says Mauricio Cantor, a biologist at Oregon State University and leader of the study. Usually humans gain the benefit, and nature pays the cost. But this interaction has been happening for over 150 years."

Fishers were more successful when they worked with the dolphins. When dolphins were presentthe fishers were 17 times more likely to catch prey(猎物and netted nearly four times more mullet when they timed their casting with the cetaceans signals. Eighty-six percent of all 4,955 mullet caught during the study period came from their interactions at the same time---when the allies organized their actions perfectly with one another.

The study also revealed dolphins hunting with humans had a 13 percent increase in survival rate over other dolphins, These cooperative dolphins are more likely to stay near the shore, reducing their chance of being caught in illegal fishing equipment. Besides, the dolphins can take some fish directly from the fishers' harvest.

28.What do the first two paragraphs talk about concerning Brazilian fishers?

    A. They trick dolphins into fishing for them,

    B. They have been training dolphins over a century,

    C.  They harvest more fish with dolphins' help,

    D.  They cast the fishing nets when dolphins surface.

29.What can we infer from paragraph 3?

    A. Nature favors human beings at no cost.

    B. Fishers’ benefiting from cooperation with cetaceans is common.

    C.  Human-wildlife interaction is a new global trend.

    D.  Dolphins cooperating with man have higher survival rate.

30.What does the underlined word "allies" refer to in paragraph 4?

    A.Partners.

    B.Fishers.

    C.Dolphins.

    D. Researchers

31.What's the author's main purpose in writing the text?

A.To appeal for the protection of sea creatures.

B.To applaud for development in fishing research.

    C.To show a unique human-dolphin relationship.

D.To encourage fishers to better draw on dolphins.

    D

If you've ever had a dog, you know just how deep a connection you can develop with “man's best friend". But a dog's life is much shorter than humans, about 12 to 15 years long, which means every dog owner has to go through the heartbreaking moment when their loving pet passes away.

Why not make a clone of that dog then? This is the solution offered by a South Korean company,Sooam Biotech Research Foundation. The company has already successfully cloned at least 400 dogs, mostly for US customers, ever since it pioneered the technique in 2005. Now, Sooam Biotech has introduced its business to UK dog owners as well, offering them dogs that look just like their lost ones.

To clone a dog, researchers first need to take a skin cell from a living dog or one that has just died.Meanwhile, another dog is selected to supply an egg. Researchers then replace the DNA in the egg with that from the skin cell and implant the egg into the womb(子宫)of a female dog. The egg grows into a puppy over the following two months.

The whole process takes less than a day,but it comes at a shockingly high price-around £ 63,000. But if you can't afford it now, you can also save the cell in a laboratory and access it at a later date.

However, magical as cloning might sound, there is no guarantee that the cloned dog will be a perfect copy of the original one.Just like identical twins of humans, they share the exactly same DNA but there will still be small differences between them. “The spots on a Dalmatian(斑点狗)clone will be different, for example,"Insung Hwang, head of Sooam Biotech, told The Guardian.

Dog owners will also have to accept the fact that personality is not "clone-able". Apart from genes, personality is also determined by upbringing and environment, which are both random elements that cloning technologies simply cannot overcome, Professor Tom Kirkwood at Newcastle University,

    UK, told The Telegraph.

Perhaps bringing our dogs back by cloning is not the best way to remember them after all. Kirkwood, a dog owner himself, pointed  out,"  An important aspect of our relationship with them is coming to terms with the pain of letting go."

32.What service does Sooam Biotech Research Foundation offer?

    A.Making copies of pet dogs.

    B.Giving pet dogs identical twins.

C.Helping dogs give birth to more puppies.

D.Helping dog owners love their dogs more.

33.Which order is correct in the dog cloning process?

a.An egg is taken from another dog.

b.A skin cell is taken from the pet dog.

c.The egg grows into a puppy in two months.

d.The egg is placed in the womb of a female dog.

e.The DNA in the egg is replaced by the DNA from the skin cell.

    A.a→d→b→e→c

    B. aeb c

    C.b→a→d→e→c

    D.b→a→e→d→c

34.What can we learn about dog cloning from the passage?

A.It has not been put into practice until recently.

B.It is very popular among US and UK pet owners.

C.It might not give the owners an exactly same dog.

D.It is very expensive and usually takes half a year to complete.

35.What is the attitude of Kirkwood towards dog cloning?

    A. negative

    C. unconcerned

    B. supportive

    D. critical

Talents may be artistic, technical, personal or social. Your talent needn't be rewarding or useful, but it will always be your own. 36. That might take some work, but will benefit you a lot.

One of the best ways to find out what hidden talents you might have is to talk to people who know you best. We tend to ignore our own abilities.37.

If you're lucky enough to have family and friends who care about you, they won't be shy about pointing out your talents.

38.Blind Willie Johnson was blinded, but it was just because of his blindness that he was thought to be a more talented guitar player. So don't let shortcomings or challenges discourage you from trying new things and developing talent.

Don't be easily affected by others' opinions. 39. Some people think James Marshall "Jimi" Hendrix was the best guitar player of all time, but a classical musician may consider him to be of no talent. Don't let others tell you being an excellent rider isn't a real talent, or that making good cheese doesn't count.

Practice is also important. Even if you have no talent for the guitar, practicing two hours a day will guarantee you'll get a lot better. Someone who practices will always end up more talented than someone who never does.40.

    A.Hard work always pays off.

B.Sometimes talents lie in your interests.

C.Playing music may make for a bright future.

D.So we miss out too often on what makes us great.

E.Ideas about talents may vary from person to person.

F.Learn to look for your talents and build them into abilities.

G.You should face your weakness positively to develop your talent.

    第二节:读后续写(满分25分)

    阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。

I was excited to participate in my first summer camp and curious to know who I would meet and make friends with. I knew deep down in my heart it would be a wonderful experience.

The first day were tests to see what level swimmers were in the pool and a treasure hunt to help us learn our way around the campground. Our second day was extremely hot, so one of the camp counselors took us to the best place for cooling down. “Woo-hoo!"  the counselor shouted as he led the way into the shallow part of the lake. We all ran after him like a bunch of ducklings and happily splashed around. Well, all of us except for one kid named Max, who sat on the dock looking the opposite of us.

That was a surprising thing to me. The day before, when we took tests to see what level swimmers we were in the pool, Max turned out to be the most advanced level possible. Not just in one thing, but in everything: sidestroke, backstroke, the crawl, breaststroke, holding breath underwater. Ax was, no question, the very best swimmer at camp. “So why was he sitting miserably?"

I swam over and said, “I'm sorry to bother you, but I'm wondering why you're not in the water. After all, we found out yesterday that you're kind of a half fish. ““OK, I'll tell you, but it's a little embarrassing." he said, "Even though I'm kind of a half fish, I' m afraid of real fish and of anything else that might be swimming in the murky(浑浊的)water. I swim only in clear swimming pools. I've never actually gone in a lake.“

    注意:

    1.所续写短文的词数应为150左右;

    2.续写部分分为两段,每段的开头语已写好。

    Paragraph 1

”Don’t be embarrassed. “ I said kindly. I told him that we were all afraid of some kind of silly stuff. I took myself as an example. I was totally freaked out by the darkness. Soon, we were both laughing heartily. That broke the ice enough for me to say, ” You know, when I’m feeling afraid of the dark, I turn on the light for a minute so I can see that there’s nothing to be scared of. You might feel better if you take a look at what’s actually under the water.”

    Paragraph 2

“I’ll go first, and then you follow me to go under water.” I waved to Max. I grabbed a pair of goggles and put it on. I dived under for a few seconds before coming up. “Nothing scary!? I reported. Max hesitated, and then took a deep breath, and went under the water for about three seconds. ”Any lake monsters?” I asked when he emerged. He laughed and pointed at some harmless little fish. “Only these tiny kind things.” Sometimes laughing fearful things off was a good method to overcome fear.

M: That’s right. Many hands make light work.

    Text 6

M: Are you going back to your country Canada?

M: Wow, the whole summer vacation! Wish you an enjoyable holiday.

    Text 7

W: Hi, Louis. This is Hebe.

    M: Hi, Hebe. What’s up?

W: Do you have any plans on Saturday night?

M: Yes. My cousin will fly to see me that night. I am going to pick him up.

W: Let’s buy some chicken wings. I can cook the chicken wings at the camp.

M: I only know how to fry eggs. So let’s buy eggs and ham too.

W: We also need some bread. And what kind of fruit do you like?

    M: Apples and bananas.

W: OK, you go to pick them. I’d like to get some peaches. What about drinks?

M: Some soft drinks and juice.

    W: I prefer milk.

M: Could you do fruit salad for us?

    W: Of course.

    Text 9

M: Hey, Molly. What are you doing here?

    W: Can’t you see that I’m running?

M: Of course, I see. But I never saw you in the park at 6 o’clock in the morning. You never exercised, did you?

W: Well, I’ve decided to make a change.

    M: Why?

W: I was reading books at home yesterday. When I got up from the bed to get something to drink, I felt trouble in breathing. Although the discomfort went away soon, I was scared, so I went to the doctor immediately.

    M: Was there anything wrong?

W: He said I would die of heart disease if I kept the former lifestyle.

M: So what was the doctor’s advice?

W: Have a balanced diet and take more exercise. Thus, I have to say goodbye to my favorite fried chips and Coke, but what annoys me most is that I have to leave my warm bed at such an early time while others are still having dreams.

    Text 10

M: Hello! I’m Harvard Smith. As the editor of The Voice, I’d like to introduce you to our school daily newspaper. We need volunteers to help us with our newspaper. Experience isn’t absolutely necessary. But we need people with writing and typing skills. Since The Voice comes out five days a week, we need excellent students who know how to plan their time well. Good grades are necessary. We can pay you depending on your work. But don’t expect to get rich. This isn’t something you do for the money. Mostly it’s just for fun. Anyone who is interested in this job should speak to me immediately after this meeting. Be prepared to start right now. The first issue goes to press tomorrow.
