Skyscrapers are the symbol of Urban life. City people are used to seeing tall buildings and apartments. Farms, on the other hand, are associated with rural(农村的) life. However, there are experts who think skyscrapers should become farms to meet the increasing food needs.
By the middle of this century, some scientists suggest, almost 80% of the earth's population could live in cities. In addition, the population could increase to 9.1 billion people during that time yet the amount of land available for farming will be the same. If current farming practices don't change, we will need an area of new land to produce enough food for the planet.
Vertical farms, where urban farmers could grow crops in environmentally friendly skyscrapers, could be the solution. In spite of concerns over high costs, experts want to make it a reality and use these skyscrapers to grow crops.
Vertical farms would have many advantages, supporters say. Unlike traditional farming, vertical farming could be free of chemicals and diseases. Besides, crops would not suffer from problems like flooding. Finally, vertical farms would reduce the cost and negative effects of transporting food over long distances.
Some argue that although crops growing in a tall glass building would get natural sunlight during the day, it wouldn't be enough. For this reason, vertical farms would need additional light sources(来源), such as artificial light.
Another way of growing fresh food is to build urban farms on rooftops. This more practical approach may be more achievable than the idea of farms in skyscrapers, researchers suggest. Experts agree that innovative(革新的) farming practices are needed to support the need for more food at affordable costs, both to the farmer and to the consumer, but the best ideas could be yet to come.
    4. What primary problem could vertical farming settle?
    A. Poor state of rural life.
    B. Shortage of food supply.
    C. High cost for transporting crops.
    D. Environmental pollution by transitional farmings.
    5. What is the advantage of vertical farming?
    A. It can produce organic food.
    B. It requires little care.
    C. It can benefit transport industry.
    D. It needs very low cost.
    6. What is a big challenge to make vertical farming a reality?
    A. Farmable land. B. Crop diseases.
    C. Light sources. D. Climate conditions.
    7. What can be the best title of the test?
    A. Future Food Needs
    B. Symbol of Urban Life
    C. Farming on Rooftops
    D. Farms of the Future

The term “smiling depression” — appearing happy to others while actually suffering depressive symptoms — has become increasingly popular. In fact, many people who experience a low mood and a loss of pleasure in activities manage to hide their condition in this way. And these people might be particularly easy to suicide.
While smiling depression is not a technical term that psychologists use,it is certain to be depressed and manage to successfully mask the symptoms. The closest technical term for this condition is “atypical depression”. It can be very hard to spot people suffering depression because they may seem like they don't have a reason to be sad — they have a job, an apartment and maybe even children or a partner. They smile when you greet them and can carry pleasant conversations. In short, they often put on a mask to the outside world while leading seemingly normal and active lives. Inside, however, they often feel hopeless and down, sometimes even having thoughts about ending it all.
People with smiling depression put on a happy face to the outside world, but they can experience a lift in their mood as a result of positive occurrences in their lives. Other symptoms of this condition include overeating, feeling a sense of heaviness in the arms and legs and being easily hurt by criticism or rejection. They are also more likely to feel depressed in the evening and feel the need to sleep longer than usual. With other forms of depression, however, your mood might be worse in the morning and you might feel the need for less sleep than you are normally used to.
So how can they break this circle? A starting point needs to be known that this condition actually exists and that it's serious. Only when we stop ignoring our problems because we think they're not serious enough can we start making an actual difference. Then we can find purpose by taking the attention away from ourselves and placing it onto something else. Feeling that our lives matter is finally what gives us purpose and meaning — and this can make a significant difference for our mental health and well-being.
    8. What do we know about people suffering smiling depression?
    A. They are wearing masks all day. B. They are difficult to get along with.
    C. They lead an abnormal life actually. D. Most of them commit suicide.
    9. What does the underlined word “atypical” in paragraph 2 mean?
    A. representative. B. common. C. hidden. D. formal.
    10. Compared with smiling depression, people suffering other depressions ________.
    A. may feel sleepless B. feel more depressed in the evening
    C. are tired of heaviness in the arms D. may eat more food
    11. What can we do to overcome smiling depression?
    A. Never talk about smiling depression and ignore its existence.
    B. Admit the condition and pay attention to ourselves.
    C. Value the importance of our life and enjoy it.
    D. Find out the problem and place it onto somebody else.

California has been facing droughts for many years, with certain areas even having to pump freshwater hundreds of miles to their distribution system. The problem is growing as the population of the state continues to expand. New research has found deep water reserves under the state which could help solve their drought crisis. Previous drilling of wells could only reach depths of 1,000 feet, but due to new pumping practices, water deeper than this can now be extracted(抽取). The team at Stanford investigated the aquifers(地下蓄水层) below this depth and found that reserves may be three times what was previously thought.
It is profitable to drill to depths more than 1,000 feet for oil and gas, but only recently in California has it become profitable to pump water from this depth. The aquifers range from 1,000 to 3,000 feet below the ground, which means that pumping will be expensive and there are other concerns. The biggest concern is the gradual setting down of the land surface. As the water is pumped out, the vacant space left is pressed by the weight of the earth above.
Even though pumping from these depths is expensive, it is still cheaper than desalinating(脱盐) the ocean water in the largely coastal state. Some desalination plants exist where possible, but they are costly to run and can need constant repairs. Wells are much more reliable sources of freshwater, and California is hoping that these deep wells may be the answer to their severe water shortage.
One problem with these sources is that the deep water also has a higher level of salt than shallower aquifers. This means that some water may even need to be desalinated after extraction, thus increasing the cost. Research from the study of groundwater has just been published. New estimates of the water reserves now go up to 2,700 billion cubic meters of freshwater.
    12. According to the text, what causes the water crisis in California?
    A. Previous drilling of wells. B. The messy distribution system.
    C. Constant droughts in the area. D. The adoption of new pumping practices.
    13. The research teams think it ________ to extract water from deeper aquifers.
    A. expensive but practical B. reliable and profitable
    C. cost-free but demanding D. cheap and environment-friendly
    14. What is mentioned as a consequence of extracting water from deep underground?
    A. The damage to aquifers. B. The sinking of land surface.
    C. The decrease in operation costs. D. The negative effects on the climate.
    15. What is the author's purpose in writing the text?
    A. To encourage people to save water.
    B. To promote the seawater desalination.
    C. To introduce a new way of extracting freshwater.
    D. To draw people's attention to the droughts in California.

Which animals are smart? Your answers may be dogs, apes or elephants. ___16___ Scientists from Cambridge University said that sheep could be trained to recognise familiar human faces, the BBC reported.
Before testing, scientists let the sheep take a look at pictures of four famous people, including former US President Barack Obama and British actress Emma Watson. ___17___ One screen showed a famous person while the other screen a random person. The sheep tended to walk toward the screen with the celebrity face. After discovering the animals' ability to recognise famous people, researchers then gave them another new task. They wanted to see if the farm animals could recognize the same people from different angles. ___18___ Finally, the researchers wanted to know if the sheep could recognize their trainers from a photo. Images of their trainers were randomly shown on screens along with a series of unfamiliar faces. ___19___ The results show that the animals' face-recognition abilities are similar to that of monkeys, apes and humans, according to the BBC.
___20___ But sheep have big brains. When they see other sheep, they use this process to recognize one another, said Jenny Morton, the lead researcher, to The Guardian. The researchers said it might be interesting in the future to figure out whether sheep can identify different facial expressions made by humans.

    Dear editor,
Cultural heritage is the legacy from the past and tells the story of ancient civilization. Its incredible splendour also reminds us of the power of nature and humans. Unfortunately, some heritages are in urgent need of conservation.
Some are worn down because of natural forces. It is due to human activities, such as civil war, conflict and missile attacks that some other heritages are also ruined. So heritage protection is at the top of the agenda for the benefit of all mankind.
As students, we can pursue the conservation of cultural heritage as volunteers and take the initiative to dissuade acts damaging cultural relics. With our efforts, more and more people will be concerned about protecting cultural relics.
    Yours,
    Li Hua
