Sitting on the edge of the world, Sydney is considered as one of the world’s greatest cities. Here are some things you should do and see in Sydney.

    1. Explore Sydney’s hottest neighborhood

Many big-ticket attractions can be found in or around the Circular Quay area, right by the port. Here, you can get on ferries (渡轮) to faraway islands or go exploring on foot with the Sydney Opera House, Royal Botanic Gardens and Museum of Contemporary all nearby.

    2. Take side trips

Popular among outdoor types, the rough Blue Mountains — about two hours by train west of the city — promises winter skiing, excellent hiking and kangaroo sightings. Walking through the national park, travelers will watch forests, waterfalls, natural caves, small villages and rock formations.

The Hunter Valley, just a two-hour drive north of Sydney, is Australia’s oldest wine region. Most vineyards (葡萄园) are family-owned, focusing on small production. Wine is more personal here.

    3. Stay in style

The classic Langham Hotel is located just west of Circular Quay, offering easy access to the famous port.

As you explore its beautiful corridors (走廊), look for contemporary artworks from around the world — The Langham Hotel has the largest art gathering (more than $1 million worth) in Australia.

Meanwhile, those seeking a more relaxed experience can go camping on Cockatoo Island — just a quick boat ride from Circular Quay.

    4. Travel tips

Leaving tips at the bar or for a taxi isn’t expected, but it’s appreciated.

When riding in a taxi alone, it’s customary to sit in the front seat.

Bring suncream, sunglasses and hat — whatever the season.

On Sundays, families enjoy discounted fares on Sydney’s ferries and trains.

    21. What can you do in the Blue Mountains?

    A. Explore the artificial caves.                     B. Watch the lovely kangaroos.

    C. Taste locally produced wine.                   D. Admire the unique corridors.

    22. What makes the Langham Hotel special?

    A. Its ideal location.                                         B. Its first-class service.

    C. Its big collection of artworks.                             D. Its modern architectural style.

    23. Which of the following is strongly suggested about touring Sydney?

    A. Ensure sun protection.     B. Offer bar tips.

    C. Sit behind the driver in a taxi.     D. Travel by train.

    B

“Are personal sad stories a must to win talent shows?” “Shouldn't talent be judged on the basis of itself without needing a sad story of struggle to win?”These are questions Sanya Malhotra on a recent Facebook post.

This morning I came across this interesting post by Sanya Malhotra. She revealed that she loved dancing and dreamt of becoming an actress, but got defeated in" Dance India Dance" because her background story wasn't sad and inspiring enough. That's when she started doubting her artistic gift.

This really set me thinking. Why are people attracted to sob stories? Why do we always appreciate only those people who have achieved something after going through a lot of hardships? Why does the headline of a newspaper “Taxi-driver's Son Stands First In UPSC Exam” find more readers? I think it is because most people, who are in a similar situation, find it comforting that someone has succeeded with so many hardships. I know it is really very difficult for people with  financial, health, or family problems to overcome obstacles and succeed. I really feel proud of them and I am often touched and inspired by their stories.

Now come back to what Sanya has said. I think this is a talent show rather than a story-telling competition. When it comes to a competition of singing or dancing or any fine arts, all the competitors should be judged without any bias(偏见). No one should lose because they don't have a sad story of struggle to tell. It's very unfair. They can be given opportunities otherwise, but should not be judged because of their stories.

Maybe, the TV channels do it to attract more viewers, because the most important element of any reality show is these touching stories. But as Sanya has said, it’s unfair to those who haven't such a story and are equally talented.

24.What do we know about Sanya Malhotra?
    A. She entered a talent show.   B. She won“Dance India Dance".
    C. She had a sad story to tell.   D. She was rejected in a film.
25.From the second paragraph, we can infer that Sanya Malhotra_______.
    A. experienced many hardships   B. is a famous actress in Indian
    C. has a great gift for gymnastics   D. used to be confident in her artistic talent
26.Which of the following headlines appeals to the readers most according to the passage?
    A. A Millionaire Donated Money To Harvard University.
    B. A Gifted Indian Teenager Won “Dance India Dance”.
    C. An Armless Girl Was Admitted To Harvard University.
    D. A Freshman Paid Off Loans By Getting A Part-time Job.
27.Which of the following is the best title of the passage?
    A. Winners Should Be Determined By Public Judges.
    B. Sanya Malhotra Displayed A Great Artistic Gift.
    C. Competitors Should Not Be Judged By Sob Stories.
    D. Talent Shows Competitors Can Tell Their Stories.

    C

We talk about people being “color-blind” but very few of us are. Even those who describe themselves as color-blind are normally just color lack. A strongly, color-blind person will still be able to tell 20 different colors, compared to the 100 or so that normal-sighted people see.

Pingelap, a tiny island in the Pacific, is a beautiful spot but one that has a genetic trouble. It is known as Color-blind Island because so many people who live on this remote island  can only sec in black and white.

Not being able to see in color is bad enough. But one is lander, Herrol, who’s a fisherman, also struggles in full sunlight because all he sees is a painful burnt-out image. “I find it difficult to go outside in the sun,” he says, “because when it’s sunny I cannot see to do my work.”

But if being truly color-blind is rare, why is it that around 10% of the population of  Pingelap live in a totally black and white world?

Well, we know that in 1780 the population of Pingelap was almost wiped out by a tsunami (海啸).As few as 20 people survived, one of whom was the king. It’s believed that he had a genetic fault that causes color-blindness and he passed this fault on to his many generations.

There is one advantage. Herrol can see well, really well, in the dark. So when it gets dark, Herrol and his friends get in their boats and hunt flying fish. They hang up flaming torches and the fish are attracted to the flames. “This type of fishing is fun,” Herrol says, especially if we catch plenty. So even though it’s hard work we enjoy it.”

    28. What is Pingelap famous as?
    A. A tiny island.     B. A beautiful island.
    C. A mentally troubled island.   D. A colour-blind island.
    29. What can we infer about Herrol?
    A. He may stay at home when it’s sunny.  B. He is interested in burnt-out images.
    C. He likes taking photos very much.  D. He doesn’t live in Pingelap any more.
    30. Why are about one-tenth of people in Pingelap seriously colour-blind?
    A. Because Pingelap often suffers from tsunamis.
    B. Because the king had an unlucky marriage.
    C. Because the king’s genetic fault played a role.
    D. Because the king made a serious mistake.
    31. What would be the best title for the text?
    A. The island of color-blindness.  B. The disadvantage of Herrol

    C. The history of Pingelap.  D. The advantage of color-blindness.

    D

A single toy catches a child’s attention for a limited period of time, but a box of items that allows a child to build their own toys will catch their imagination for years to come. This brilliant idea already exists in real product form, and it's called Toyi.

Toyi is described as an eco-friendly creative building kit, and it recently won the well-known IF Design Award. It came from Istanbul, Turkish, where a young female designer named Elif Atmaca first came up with the idea for it when she wanted to help the kids living in disadvantaged areas. These children do not have access to the variety of interesting toys that wealthier children do.

Toyi Atmaca’s design allows children to transform what are around them into clever toys. It consists of sticks, junction parts, flexible connectors, toy body parts like feet, eyes, hands, and wheels that can be used to turn old water bottles, cups, boxes, towels, etc. into cute, clever, and unique playthings. This toy kit upcycles(升级利用) materials that would otherwise go to waste, turning a recycling bin into a treasure container.

“Our initial target was to deliver Toyi kits to only disadvantaged children in Turkish,” Atmaca told the media. But during a research conducted with around 300 children, she realized that the restriction on being creative went beyond any boundary. “I saw that everything was planned and shaped by grown-ups, blocking the kids’ imagination in a significant way,” said Atmaca.

Atmaca concluded that each kid needed space where he or she could freely create. She explained the entire process should be left to kids’ creativity, reminding teachers and all grown-ups that child-led play was an excellent way for children to develop lifelong skills.

Toyi’s creators are now considering distributing the kits to as many children as possible around the world through different international NGOs. Atmaca notes that for each Toyi kit sold out, they will also donate one kit to a disadvantaged child through different partnerships around the world.

    32. Why did Atmaca design Toyi at first?

    A. To win the famous IF Design Award.    B. To protect the environment in Istanbul.

    C. To help poor kids make their own to      D. To recycle all the waste in the dustbin.

    33. Which is probably the product made with the toy kit of Toyi?

    A. A six-armed “robot” from a water bottle.  B. A computer with high technology.

    C. A treasure container from a dustbin   D. A new picture of a young boy.

    34. How do the toy kits help improve the children’s ability?

    A. It provides the kids various types of toys. B. It teaches the kids to share joys with others.

    C. It changes the poor kids’ living conditions. D. It offers space for the kids’ creative minds.

    35. What is the new target for Atmaca and her partners?

    A. Designing new toy kits for kids and adults. B. Selling toy kits to every kid in the world.

    C. Donating toy kits to more poor children. D. Doing further research on the kids’ demands.
