Thomas and Friends
Based on the railway series books by Reverend Wilbert Awdry. Thomas and Friends follows the story of locomotive(火车头) friends who live on Sodor Island. There are large engines and small engines. After all, the popular word of the show is “I think I can.” Thomas and Friends was totally redone in 2003 by ITV, nineteen years after its first show.
Arthur
Based on a classic children’s book series by Mare Brown. Arthur is about an eight-year-old boy named Arthur from Elwood City. He has to deal with several situations that many children face today. Community service means doing volunteer jobs for the public. It teaches valuable lessons about the duties of a citizen(公民). Today, in the United States, important services are provided through thousands of organizations created to meet needs not provided by government at the local, state, and national levels. These activities help to create a sense of great care for the public.
There are close connections between community service programs and civic(公民的) education in schools. At every level of school, students can be involved in community service projects. In the primary grades, one of the purposes for students is to learn basic civic values that include fair play, respect for the opinions of others, and the rights and duties of a citizen in our society. In the USA, a question is asked millions of times every day in the supermarket: “Paper or plastic?” Well, which kind of bag would you choose?
In fact, all kinds of bags have some influence on the environment. But we are always told that paper bags are better. For example, they break down easily and can be recycled. However, making paper bags takes more energy than making plastic bags. How can this be true?
Studies show that paper bag production requires four times as much energy as plastic bag production. And the amount of water used to make paper bags is twenty times higher. And the influence on forests is more serious. It takes about fourteen million trees to produce ten billion paper bags. As for recycling, some people believe that paper bags more environment-friendly than plastic ones. However, this idea can be quickly discarded. Research shows the opposite is true.
Even though paper bags might be more harmful than plastic ones, plastic still seems to be considered by governments as the more harmful of the two. In Ireland, people have to pay 22 cents for every plastic bag, and as a result, their use has dropped quickly.
It seems wise to reuse these bags. However, we’re not doing that a lot. That may be because they are easily broken. If so, cloth bags are a better choice, but still their production also has a bad influence on the environment. So what should we do? How should we answer the question of “Paper or plastic?” It seems that we first need to ask ourselves the following question: “What can I do to help the environment?”

In the USA, a question is asked millions of times every day in the supermarket: “Paper or plastic?” Well, which kind of bag would you choose?
In fact, all kinds of bags have some influence on the environment. But we are always told that paper bags are better. For example, they break down easily and can be recycled. However, making paper bags takes more energy than making plastic bags. How can this be true?
Studies show that paper bag production requires four times as much energy as plastic bag production. And the amount of water used to make paper bags is twenty times higher. Shadow puppetry, or pi ying xi, is an ancient form of storytelling and entertainment (娱乐) in China. It has been an important part of Chinese culture.
Shadow puppetry dates back to the Han Dynasty, more than 2,000 years ago. When Emperor Wu’s favorite wife died of illness, the emperor became very sad. One of his ministers came up with an idea to cheer the emperor up. That night, he cut a puppet (木偶) in the shape of the emperor’s wife and put on a performance. It was so wonderful that the emperor felt that he saw the spirit of his love. Shadow puppet shows became very popular during the Song Dynasty. People celebrated festivals and holidays by putting on shadow puppet shows.
It’s said that the puppets were first cut out of paper, but later made of colored leather (皮革). One mouth tells stories of thousands of years, and a pair of hands brings millions of puppets to life. This is how a puppet artist works. However, being a puppet artist is never easy. In order to make the puppets look like real ones, puppet artists must spend long hours watching and studying how people and animals move. They usually practice many times before a show. In a show, performers hold puppets behind a white cloth and make the puppets move naturally. They use both hands while performing and have to change their hands from time to time.
