I would never forget that day. When I woke up on Sep 1, 2020, there was only one thing on my mind: what to wear. A billion thoughts raced through my brain in the closet. I didn’t want to come off as trying too hard, but I also didn’t want to be seen as a slob. Not only was it my first day of high school, but it was my first day of school in a new state; first impressions are everything, and it was important for me to impress the people who I would spend the next three years with.
This was my third time being the new kid. But this time was different because my dad promised that I would start and finish high school in the same place. This time mattered, and that made me nervous.
After meticulously searching my closet, I proudly came out in a dress from Target. The soft cotton was comfortable, and the laced shoulders added a hint of fun. Yes, this outfit was the one. An hour later, I felt powerful as I headed toward Room 1136. But as I entered class, my jaw dropped to the floor.
Sitting at her desk was Mrs Hutfilz, my English teacher, wearing exactly the same dress as me. I kept my head down and tiptoed to my seat. I made it through my brief introduction speech until Mrs Hutfilz stood up, jokingly adding that she liked my style. Although this was the moment I had been afraid of from the moment I walked in, all my anxiety surprisingly melted away, and the students paid attention as I shared my story. My smile grew as I laughed with the students. After class, I stayed behind and talked to Mrs Hutfilz, relieved to make a humorous and real connection.
Looking back three years later, the ten minutes I spent afraid of giving my speech were really not worth it. My first period of high school certainly made the day unforgettable in the best way and taught me that Mars Hutfilz has an awesome sense of style!
    4. Why did the author attach great importance to her clothes on the first day of high school?
    A. She was unconfident about herself. B. She wanted to make a good impression.
    C. She followed her father’s advice. D. She cared too much about her appearance.
    5. What does the underlined word “meticulously” in paragraph 3 probably mean?
    A. Carefully B. Casually C. Excitedly D. Suddenly
    6. How did the author probably feel after noticing her teacher’s dress?
    A. Annoyed B. Confused C. Embarrassed D. Proud
    7. What is the author’s purpose in writing the article?
    A. To explore the troubles with dressing. B. To introduce her stylish English teacher.
    C. To stress the importance of first impressions. D. To share a memorable experience.
B 5. A 6. C 7. D

Mexico’s Yucatan Peninsula broke their record for most visitors in a year back in 2019, with over 3.2 million visitors. Recently, Mexico’s first long-distance hiking and cycling trail has been completed here, which will attract tourists from all over the world once more. The tourist attraction and trail, which goes through local cultural relics, will give visitors a wonderful glimpse into the incredible history to Maya’s history.
Considering that most tourists travel to Mexico, particularly Cancun, with the 5-star hotels and perfect beaches, getting them to visit the other history-filled areas isn’t always so easy, unless they happen to be history lovers. But with the newly constructed Camino del Mayab, tourists can experience the rich Mayan culture, history, food, and civilization. The trail is a 68-mile journey that hopes to aid in bettering the lives of the 14 communities of Mayan descendants that live along the trail. The journey can take three days to cycle or five days to walk. Those on the journey will begin in the town of Merida, and then head to many abandoned haciendas, which remind you of Mayan labor. Along the trail, visitors can purchase handicrafts and taste the delicious food of the Yucatan and the Maya from local stores and restaurants.
All throughout the trail is also a jungle where various birds and other types of animals are found. The trail ends at the very top of the pyramid of Kulkulkan at Mayapin. The Yucatan civilization collapsed during the 9 century and its people became slaves in the 15th century. Yet, the locals worked to keep their ancestral homes, animals, cities, foods and cultural work for themselves, rather than being overrun by large hotel companies. In this way, the Yucatan civilization managed to remain strong in the region.
And whether you’re a lover of Mexico or not, or possibly one that enjoys these types of camino walks, the Camino del Mayab is definitely worth the time.
    8. What is Camino del Mayab?
    A. A perfect beach. B. A historical site.
    C. A newly constructed hotel. D. A hiking and cycling trail.
    9. What is the main purpose of the Camino del Mayab?
    A. To help improve the lives of locals. B. To further protect tropical animals.
    C. To attract tourists to Mexico’s beaches. D. To promote local goods and handicrafts.

    11. What is the author’s purpose to write this text?
    A. To introduce a new attraction. B. To bring in tourism investment.

Recently a new study found that elephants in central African forests can encourage the growth of slow-growing trees and increase the ability of the forest to store carbon.
“As a tree, there’s a so-called balance that you can’t have it all,” explained Fabio Berzaghi, who led the study. Elephants prefer to eat fast-growing trees in more open spaces. As they feed and walk, they cause damage to these species, knocking over trees or breaking off branches, which results in an ecosystem that favors large, slow-growing hardwood trees. “As the elephants thin the forest, they increase the number of slow-growing trees and the forest is capable of storing more carbon,” said Stephen Blake, one of the paper’s authors.
Scientists collected field measurements in the Congo Basin and used a computer model to predict how elephants would affect forest structure, and carbon storage potential in the long term. The data confirmed that when elephants are present, the forest contains larger trees and higher abundances of species with high wood density. On the contrary, should forest elephants go extinct, leaving those slow-growing trees struggling to compete with fast-growing species, it would result in a 7 percent loss of above-ground biomass As a result, central African forests could lose up to three billion tons of carbon, potentially accelerating climate change.
The sad reality is that humans are doing their best to rid the planet of elephants. lain Douglas Hamilton, founder of Save the Elephants said, “It is shocking that just as we are beginning to understand how elephants might have a key role in Africa in storing carbon, they are under real threat of extinction.” One limitation of the study, Mr. Berzaghi said, is that we do not know how much carbon has already been lost because of the elephants’ decline. But it does seem certain, he added, that putting a stop to illegal hunting and restoring forest elephant populations would bring climate benefits.
    12. What can we infer about slow-growing trees in Paragraph 2?
    A. They are elephants’ favorite food. B. They are easily hurt by elephants.
    C. They may reduce elephant populations. D. They can help forests store carbon.
    13. What would happen without elephants living in central African forests?
    A. Larger trees would defeat fast-growing species.
    B. The forest structure would remain unchanged.
    C. The forests would lose more fast-growing trees.
    D. Climate change would possibly be sped up.
    14. What did Mr. Berzaghi suggest people do?
    A. Lead a low-carbon life. B. Protect forest elephants.
    C. Stop destroying forests. D. Evaluate the carbon loss.
    15. What is the best title for the text?
    A. Elephants Defend Against Climate Change
    B. Elephants Disappear in Parts of Africa
    C. Climate Change Affects Forest Structure
    D. Humans and Nature Live in Harmony
D 13. D 14. B 15. A
根据第二段末句““As the elephants thin the forest, they increase the number of slow-growing trees and the forest is capable of storing more carbon,” said Stephen Blake, one of the paper’s authors. (该论文的作者之一斯蒂芬·布莱克说:“随着大象使森林不再那么茂盛,它们增加了生长缓慢的树木的数量,森林能够储存更多的碳。”)”可知,生长缓慢的树木的数量越多,森林能够储存的碳越多。故选D。
    【13题详解】
细节理解题。根据第三段最后两句“On the contrary, should forest elephants go extinct, leaving those slow-growing trees struggling to compete with fast-growing species, it would result in a 7 percent loss of above-ground biomass (生物总量). As a result, central African forests could lose up to three billion tons of carbon, potentially accelerating climate change. (相反,如果森林象灭绝,使那些生长缓慢的树木与生长迅速的物种竞争,将导致地上生物量损失7%。因此,中非森林可能会释放多达30亿吨的碳,这可能会加速气候变化。)”可知,如果森林象灭绝,生长缓慢的树木竞争力变弱,因此,中非森林可能会多释放多达30亿吨的碳,这可能会加速气候变化。故选D。
    【14题详解】
细节理解题。根据末段末句“But it does seem certain, he added, that putting a stop to illegal hunting and restoring forest elephant populations would bring climate benefits. (但他补充说,似乎可以肯定的是,停止非法狩猎和恢复森林大象数量将带来气候效益。)”可知,Mr. Berzaghi建议人们保护森林象,停止非法狩猎。故选B。
    【15题详解】
标题判断题。通读全文,尤其是首段“Recently a new study found that elephants in central African forests can encourage the growth of slow-growing trees and increase the ability of the forest to store carbon. (最近一项新的研究发现,中非森林中的大象可以促进生长缓慢的树木的生长,提高森林储存碳的能力。)”可知,本文主要介绍森林大象可以提高森林储存碳的能力从而延缓气候变化的速度。故选A。
For average working people, they normally change their careers five to seven times throughout their whole lives. ___16___ Without that, you are just a dreamer.
It happens that you neglect thinking about your career when you are busy, but you must spend time considering your current situation and your ideal career path to develop a specific career plan. ___17___ When you have a better understanding of yourself and what you want, you are more likely to make a plan that suits your goals and lifestyle. By this kind of self-reflection, you will discover the type of career you want.
___18___ You probably need SMART goals that are specific, measurable, achievable, relevant, and time-bound to prepare for success. Studies prove that SMART goals work better when they are written down and shared with others. Sharing enhances your sense of responsibility while writing down allows you to commit them to memory. Therefore, you can always have access to them because they are kept in your subconscious.
Now that you have understood what you want and had your goals set and written down, it’s time to make career decisions. First, list pros and cons of different decisions. ___19___ Finally, evaluate how they could influence your future.
So how do you feel when talking about your career? Do you want to stay where you are or are you ready to make a change to take steps to achieve success? ___20___
    A. The next step is to figure out how to get there.
    B. Consider your long-term and short-term objectives.
    C. Reflecting on yourself and your needs is also necessary.
    D. And then think about how each path lines up with your values.
    E. The best way to be prepared for a career change is to make a plan.
    F. Reflect, set goals, and make your decision, and you’ll be on the right track.
    G. After you’ve obtained an understanding of the job, next comes the evaluation part.
E 17. C 18. A 19. D 20. F
根据下文“Without that, you are just a dreamer. (没有它,你只是一个梦想家)”和指代关系可知,设空句中应出现指示代词that指代对象,E项“The best way to be prepared for a career change is to make a plan. (为转行做好准备的最好方法是制定计划)”中“制定计划”即下文that指代内容,没有计划,你只是一个空想家,另外,E项中“prepared for a career change”也与上文“change their careers five to seven times”相照应。故选E项。
下文“When you have a better understanding of yourself and what you want, you are more likely to make a plan that suits your goals and lifestyle. (当你对自己和自己想要的东西有了更好的了解,你就更有可能制定一个适合你的目标和生活方式的计划)”讲更好地了解自己和自己想要的东西的益处,C项“Reflecting on yourself and your needs is also necessary. (反思你自己和你的需求也是必要的)”提出要反思自己和自己的需求的必要性,下文是反思的结果,句中“Reflecting on yourself and your needs”和“a better understanding of yourself and what you want”相照应。故选C。
上一段提出先要进行“self-reflection”,进而明确你想要的职业类型,设空句下文“You probably need SMART goals that are specific, measurable, achievable, relevant, and time-bound to prepare for success. (为成功做准备,你可能需要制定明智的目标,这些目标要是具体的、可衡量的、可实现的、相关的和有时间限制的)”提出具体的做法,A项“The next step is to figure out how to get there. (下一步是弄清楚如何实现这一点)”承上启下,符合上下文连贯。故选A项。
根据上文“Now that you have understood what you want and had your goals set and written down, it’s time to make career decisions. First, list pros and cons of different decisions. (既然你已经明白了自己想要什么,并且设定了目标并写了下来,那么是时候做出职业决定了。首先,列出不同决定的利弊)”可知,上文提到了第一步,可知本句是在说明接下来做什么。故D选项“然后思考每条路径如何与你的价值观相一致”符合语境,故选D。
    【20题详解】
根据末段“So how do you feel when talking about your career? Do you want to stay where you are or are you ready to make a change to take steps to achieve success? (当谈到你的职业生涯时,你感觉如何?你是想停留在现在的位置,还是准备做出改变,采取措施来取得成功?)”两个问题可知,这是全文内容的总结,F项“Reflect, set goals, and make your decision, and you’ll be on the right path in no time. (反思、设定目标、做出决定,你很快就会走上正确的道路)”正是对第二、三、四段中提到的三个步骤的小结。故选F项。

    第二节 (满分25分)
    47. 阅读下面材料, 根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段, 使之构成一篇完整的短文。
At a restaurant in scenic Augsburg, Germany, waiter Paul Blachut was busy at work. It was a warm Sunday afternoon in May 2021 and many people had come for relaxation at this pretty place beside the Lech river.
From behind the bar, Paul, 24, had a good view of the river; there were stone steps that stretched some 20 meters down from the restaurant to the riverbank. He could see that, along the S-shaped shore, people were picnicking and children were playing. Many were cooling their feet in the river. The melt water from the Alps meant the water was very cold at that time of year, and it flowed quickly.
Among those enjoying the cooling water were a mother and her two teenage daughters. They were standing on the edge of the riverbank, playing with an inflatable tube(充气船)when, suddenly, the girls lost their footing and were caught in the river’s current.
It all happened so fast. The girls desperately grabbed on to the tube, which their mother was sitting in, pulling her into the river, too. Then all three were being carried away by the current.
A bystander raced up the steps to the restaurant, and Paul looked up from his work when he heard the shout: “I think three people are drowning in the Lech!”
Paul could only see a tube moving up and down in the river. Then he spotted the three women a short distance away, waving their arms, trying to grasp anything they could. Paul’s mind raced. Why wasn’t anyone helping them? Frightened, he saw that one of the them kept sinking.
Despite having no lifesaving training, he rushed down to the riverbank, quickly taking his cell phone, wallet and keys from his pockets and pulling off his T-shirt. Then he jumped into the river. He didn’t care about the cold; all he could think about was saving the women. It was obvious that they were helpless.
    注意:
    1. 续写词数应为150左右;
    2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
As Paul got closer, he could tell that the mother seemed to be in the most trouble.
    _____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Paul knew he needed to rescue the two daughters further down the river.
    _____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
One possible version:
As Paul got closer, he could tell that the mother seemed to be in the most trouble. Her head was then below the surface of the water. She was drowning. He recalled a movie in which a lifeguard grabbed a drowning victim, pulling the person ashore while swimming on his back. Paul tried this, but the woman’s clothing made her so heavy; he kept being dragged under, too. He needed a new plan. Then he dived under the drowning woman, pushing her upward and finally toward the shore. He couldn’t recall if it had taken three, four or five pushes, but at some point, an onlooker was able to get close enough to grab the woman’s hand, pulling her to the shore.
Paul knew he needed to rescue the two daughters further down the river. He dived into the current again swam quickly downstream, held of one and pushed her successfully toward the shore in the same way he had done her mother. Looking back to the river, he could see someone was helping the girl’s sister——which was a good thing because the teenager in front of him was unconscious. As Paul gently lay her down, a bystander with medical training came forward and attended to her. Thankfully, it was not long before she was conscious again. Several onlookers expressed their admiration for Paul, but he was modest about his role although he felt happy. Indeed, it was a job very well done.
    ①回想:recall/reflect
    ②接近:get close to/approach
    ③放下:lay...down/put...down

[高分句型2] Looking back to the river, he could see someone was helping the girl’s sister-which was a good thing because the teenager in front of him was unconscious.
[高分句型3] As Paul gently lay her down, a bystander with medical training came forward and attended to her(由as引导的时间状语从句)
