I would never forget that day. When I woke up on Sep 1, 2020, there was only one thing on my mind: what to wear. A billion thoughts raced through my brain in the closet. I didn’t want to come off as trying too hard, but I also didn’t want to be seen as a slob. Mexico’s Yucatan Peninsula broke their record for most visitors in a year back in 2019, with over 3.2 million visitors. Recently, Mexico’s first long-distance hiking and cycling trail has been completed here, which will attract tourists from all over the world once more. The tourist attraction and trail, which goes through local cultural relics, will give visitors a wonderful glimpse into the incredible history to Maya’s history.
Considering that most tourists travel to Mexico, particularly Cancun, with the 5-star hotels and perfect beaches, getting them to visit the other history-filled areas isn’t always so easy, unless they happen to be history lovers. But with the newly constructed Camino del Mayab, tourists can experience the rich Mayan culture, history, food, and civilization. The trail is a 68-mile journey that hopes to aid in bettering the lives of the 14 communities of Mayan descendants that live along the trail. The journey can take three days to cycle or five days to walk. Those on the journey will begin in the town of Merida, and then head to many abandoned haciendas, which remind you of Mayan labor. Along the trail, visitors can purchase handicrafts and taste the delicious food of the Yucatan and the Maya from local stores and restaurants.
All throughout the trail is also a jungle where various birds and other types of animals are found. The trail ends at the very top of the pyramid of Kulkulkan at Mayapin. The Yucatan civilization collapsed during the 9 century and its people became slaves in the 15th century. Yet, the locals worked to keep their ancestral homes, animals, cities, foods and cultural work for themselves, rather than being overrun by large hotel companies. In this way, the Yucatan civilization managed to remain strong in the region.
And whether you’re a lover of Mexico or not, or possibly one that enjoys these types of camino walks, the Camino del Mayab is definitely worth the time.

Recently a new study found that elephants in central African forests can encourage the growth of slow-growing trees and increase the ability of the forest to store carbon.
“As a tree, there’s a so-called balance that you can’t have it all,” explained Fabio Berzaghi, who led the study. Elephants prefer to eat fast-growing trees in more open spaces. As they feed and walk, they cause damage to these species, knocking over trees or breaking off branches, which results in an ecosystem that favors large, slow-growing hardwood trees. “As the elephants thin the forest, they increase the number of slow-growing trees and the forest is capable of storing more carbon,” said Stephen Blake, one of the paper’s authors.
Scientists collected field measurements in the Congo Basin and used a computer model to predict how elephants would affect forest structure, and carbon storage potential in the long term. The data confirmed that when elephants are present, the forest contains larger trees and higher abundances of species with high wood density. On the contrary, should forest elephants go extinct, leaving those slow-growing trees struggling to compete with fast-growing species, it would result in a 7 percent loss of above-ground biomass (生物总量). As a result, central African forests could lose up to three billion tons of carbon, potentially accelerating climate change.
The sad reality is that humans are doing their best to rid the planet of elephants. lain Douglas Hamilton, founder of Save the Elephants said, “It is shocking that just as we are beginning to understand how elephants might have a key role in Africa in storing carbon, they are under real threat of extinction.” One limitation of the study, Mr. Berzaghi said, is that we do not know how much carbon has already been lost because of the elephants’ decline. But it does seem certain, he added, that putting a stop to illegal hunting and restoring forest elephant populations would bring climate benefits.

I would never forget that day. When I woke up on Sep 1, 2020, there was only one thing on my mind: what to wear. A billion thoughts raced through my brain in the closet. I didn’t want to come off as trying too hard, but I also didn’t want to be seen as a slob. Not only was it my first day of high school, but it was my first day of school in a new state; first impressions are everything, and it was important for me to impress the people who I would spend the next three years with.
This was my third time being the new kid. But this time was different because my dad promised that I would start and finish high school in the same place. This time mattered, and that made me nervous.
After meticulously searching my closet, I proudly came out in a dress from Target. The soft cotton was comfortable, and the laced shoulders added a hint of fun. Yes, this outfit was the one. An hour later, I felt powerful as I headed toward Room 1136. But as I entered class, my jaw dropped to the floor.
Sitting at her desk was Mrs Hutfilz, my English teacher, wearing exactly the same dress as me. I kept my head down and tiptoed to my seat. At a restaurant in scenic Augsburg, Germany, waiter Paul Blachut was busy at work. It was a warm Sunday afternoon in May 2021 and many people had come for relaxation at this pretty place beside the Lech river.
From behind the bar, Paul, 24, had a good view of the river; there were stone steps that stretched some 20 meters down from the restaurant to the riverbank. He could see that, along the S-shaped shore, people were picnicking and children were playing. Many were cooling their feet in the river. The melt water from the Alps meant the water was very cold at that time of year, and it flowed quickly.
Among those enjoying the cooling water were a mother and her two teenage daughters. They were standing on the edge of the riverbank, playing with an inflatable tube(充气船)when, suddenly, the girls lost their footing and were caught in the river’s current.
It all happened so fast. The girls desperately grabbed on to the tube, which their mother was sitting in, pulling her into the river, too. Then all three were being carried away by the current.
A bystander raced up the steps to the restaurant, and Paul looked up from his work when he heard the shout: “I think three people are drowning in the Lech!”
Paul could only see a tube moving up and down in the river. Then he spotted the three women a short distance away, waving their arms, trying to grasp anything they could. Paul’s mind raced. Why wasn’t anyone helping them? Frightened, he saw that one of the them kept sinking.
Despite having no lifesaving training, he rushed down to the riverbank, quickly taking his cell phone, wallet and keys from his pockets and pulling off his T-shirt. Then he jumped into the river. He didn’t care about the cold; all he could think about was saving the women. It was obvious that they were helpless.

Paul knew he needed to rescue the two daughters further down the river. He dived into the current again swam quickly downstream, held of one and pushed her successfully toward the shore in the same way he had done her mother. Looking back to the river, he could see someone was helping the girl’s sister——which was a good thing because the teenager in front of him was unconscious. As Paul gently lay her down, a bystander with medical training came forward and attended to her. Thankfully, it was not long before she was conscious again. Several onlookers expressed their admiration for Paul, but he was modest about his role although he felt happy. Indeed, it was a job very well done.
