A few days ago I visited my grandfather in hospital. He has Alzhemier’s—a disease that usually starts slowly and gets worse gradually. I thought I was prepared to see him. I knew chances were slim that he’d actually recognize me.
He didn’t. As a matter of fact, he had no idea that he even had grandchildren. But he was excited that somebody came to visit him. I tried to explain to him who I was. But after he told me multiple times that he didn’t have grandchildren, I gave up. And my heart broke into a million little pieces.
We sat in silence for a little while, before he told me to call my grandma. This was the first time I had tried so hard to hold back tears. My grandma died four years ago and he didn’t remember. He thought she was stuck on her way to pick him up.
My grandpa used to be a strong, hard-working man. He was the person you turned to when you needed your car fixed, your tires changed or something heavy to be carried. Sadly, that man left this world a long time ago, and left behind a man that is lost and scared.
I want to help him. I want to make him feel better. I want to tell him about his old life, and how great it was. So I sat with him and I held his hand, and every once in a while I told him how good he looked and how much I liked the color of his shirt and how it brought out the blue in his eyes. I told him that my grandma was on her way whenever he asked about her, and I made sure the glass in his hand was always filled with water.
I can’t take away his pain. I can’t help him remember. I can’t make the disease go away. All I can do is hold on to the memories—hold on for both of us.
    1. Why was the author about to cry?
    A. Grandpa needed to be taken care of. B. Grandpa thought grandma still alive.
    C. Grandma died about four years ago. D. Grandma didn’t make it to the hospital.
    2. Which of the following best describe the author?
    A. Considerate and patient. B. Reliable and energetic.
    C. Warm-hearted and plain. D. Strong-minded and generous.
    3. What is the author’s purpose to write the passage?
    A. To show pity towards her grandpa. B. To record memories of her grandpa.
    C. To express deep love for her grandpa. D. To call on further study on Alzheimer’s.

My grandma died four years ago and he didn’t remember. He thought she was stuck on her way to pick him up.

根据最后一段“I can’t take away his pain. I can’t help him remember. I can’t make the disease go away. All I can do is hold on to the memories—hold on for both of us.

They may look like ordinary glasses but they’re not. These trendy-looking glasses from researchers have a special ability and it doesn’t have to do with nearsightedness. Embedded on the bottom of the frames(框) are tiny speakers and microphones that can emit silent sound waves and receive echoes back.
This ability comes in handy for detecting mouth movements, allowing the device to detect low-volume or even silent speech. That means you can whisper or mouth a command, and the glasses will pick it up like a lip reader.
“For people who cannot vocalize sound, this silent speech technology could be an excellent input for a voice synthesizer(合成器),” said a doctoral student. The tech could also be used by its wearers to give silent commands to a paired device, like a laptop or a smartphone.
It is proved that EchoSpeech could recognize 31 commands and connected data with error rates of less than 10 percent. The speakers and microphones are placed on different lenses on different sides of the face. When the speakers give off sound waves around 20 kilohertz, it travels in a path from one lens to the lips and then to the opposite lens. As the sound waves from the speakers reflect and diffract after hitting the lips, their distinct patterns are caught by microphones and used to make “echo profiles” for each phrase or command. It effectively works like a simple, mini sonar system.
“Because the data is processed locally on your smartphone instead of being uploaded to the cloud, privacy-sensitive information never leaves your control,” a professor noted. Plus, audio data takes less bandwidth to transmit than videos or images, and takes less power to run as well.
    4. What does the underlined word “emit” mean in Paragraph 1?
    A. Make out. B. Keep off.
    C. Send out. D. Take off.
    5. What’s the special function of the glasses, according to the passage?
    A. Preventing eyes from sunlight. B. Offering help for nearsightedness.
    C. Getting whisper information. D. Receiving movement instruction.
    6. What’s Paragraph 4 mainly about?
    A. The effects of EchoSpeech. B. The parts of EchoSpeech.
    C. The advantages of EchoSpeech. D. The operation of EchoSpeech.
    7. What can we infer from the professor’s comment?
    A. The glasses will process our data.
    B. The glasses can protect our secrets.
C The glasses may replace smartphone.
    D. The glasses couldn’t control our lives.
C 5. C 6. D 7. B
由文章第一段中“Embedded on the bottom of the frames(框) are tiny speakers and microphones(框架底部嵌入了微型扬声器和麦克风)”可知,这种眼镜可以发送声波。A. Make out. Keep off.(使)不接近;C. Send out.发送;D. Take off.
由文章第二段“This ability comes in handy for detecting mouth movements, allowing the device to detect low-volume or even silent speech. That means you can whisper or mouth a command, and the glasses will pick it up like a lip reader.(这种能力在检测口腔运动时会派上用场,允许设备检测低音量甚至无声的语音。
由文章第四段“It is proved that EchoSpeech could recognize 31 commands and connected data with error rates of less than 10 percent. It effectively works like a simple, mini sonar system.(实验证明,EchoSpeech可以识别31条指令和连接数据,错误率低于10%。
由文章最后一段“Because the data is processed locally on your smartphone instead of being uploaded to the cloud, privacy-sensitive information never leaves your control,” a professor noted. Plus, audio data takes less bandwidth to transmit than videos or images, and takes less power to run as well.(一位教授指出:“因为数据是在你的智能手机上本地处理的,而不是上传到云端,所以隐私敏感信息永远不会离开你的控制。”
    C
The baguette, a long, thin French bread, is being added to UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage list. UNESCO experts gathering in Morocco this week decided that the simple French bread—made only of flour, water, salt, and yeast—was worth U.N. recognition, after France’s culture ministry warned of a “continuous drop” in the number of traditional bakeries(烘焙坊), with some 400 closing every year over the past half century.
The UN cultural agency’s chief, Audrey Azoulay said, “the decision honors more than just bread; it recognizes the ‘graceful skills of bakers’ and ‘a daily ritual (仪式)’.” Azoulay added, “It is important that such baking knowledge and social practices can continue to exist in the future.”
With the bread’s new status (地位), the French government said it planned to create a baguette day, called the “Open Bakehouse Day”, to connect the French better with their heritage. Bakers in France seemed proud, if unsurprised. “Of course, it should be on the list because the baguette symbolizes the world. It’s universal,” said Asma Farhat, a baker at Julien’s Bakery. “If there’s no baguette, you can’t have a proper meal. In the morning you can toast it, for lunch it’s a sandwich, and then it accompanies dinner.”
Despite the decline in traditional bakery numbers, France’s 67 million people still buy baguettes at a variety of sales points, including in supermarkets. According to France’s “Bread Observatory”, the French eat 320 baguettes of one form or another every second. The problem is, observers say, that they can often be poor in quality. “It’s very easy to get bad baguette in France. It’s the traditional baguette from the traditional bakery that is in danger. It’s about quality not quantity,” said one local resident, Marine Fourchier.
    8. What was UNESCO’s decision about the French bread?
    A. Including it on the ICH list.
    B. Creating a baguette day.
    C. Closing traditional baguette bakeries.
    D. Improving the traditional baking skills.
    9. What did Audrey Azoulay think of UNESCO’s decision?
    A. Creative. B. Unclear. C. Shocking. D. Meaningful.
    10. What can we learn from Asma Farhat’s words?
    A. Baguettes are common in the French diet.
    B. Baguettes are easy to get in supermarkets.
    C. Baguettes and sandwiches are equally important.
    D. Baguettes are the most popular around the world.
    11. What can we infer from the last paragraph?
    A. Freshly baked baguettes go bad easily.
    B. Traditional baking are to be promoted.
    C. Eating baguettes becomes a new tradition.
    D. Traditional baguettes gain official attention.
A 9. D 10. A 11. D
根据第一段“The baguette, a long, thin French bread, is being added to UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage list. UNESCO experts gathering in Morocco this week decided that the simple French bread—made only of flour, water, salt, and yeast—was worth U.N. recognition, after France’s culture ministry warned of a “continuous drop” in the number of traditional bakeries (烘焙坊), with some 400 closing every year over the past half century. 故选A项。
根据第二段“The UN cultural agency’s chief, Audrey Azoulay said, “the decision honors more than just bread; it recognizes the ‘graceful skills of bakers’ and ‘a daily ritual (仪式)’.” Azoulay added, ‘ It is important that such baking knowledge and social practices can continue to exist in the future.’
根据第三段中的“‘Of course, it should be on the list because the baguette symbolizes the world. It’s universal,’ said Asma Farhat, a baker at Julien’s Bakery. ‘If there’s no baguette, you can’t have a proper meal. In the morning you can toast it, for lunch it’s a sandwich, and then it accompanies dinner.’ 故选A项。
根据最后一段“According to France’s ‘Bread Observatory’, the French eat 320 baguettes of one form or another every second. The problem is, observers say, that they can often be poor in quality. It’s very easy to get bad baguette in France. It’s the traditional baguette from the traditional bakery that is in danger. It’s about quality not quantity,

    Start small
The risks you’re up for now might look different from the ones you took before.
根据上文“Adventures expand our world by allowing us to connect with ourselves and others in a new way. Research shows that new situations, especially ones that seem dangerous, force us to face our fear and have positive outlook.(冒险让我们以一种新的方式与自己和他人联系,从而扩展了我们的世界。 So are you ready for your adventure? Here’s some advice.“(那么你准备好冒险了吗? G项的“they”指代上文“new situations”。G项:They may also make us more creative and better able to adjust to stress.
根据本段小标题“Start small(从小事做起)”可知,本段内容建议从小的冒险开始尝试,结合下文“This will break your routine(惯例), build your confidence and help you run up to bigger adventures.(这将打破你的常规,建立你的信心,并帮助你跑到更大的冒险。)” Pick a manageable activity you can do soon this weekend.(选一个你周末可以很快完成的可控的活动。)
根据下文“Start with “I know you’re nervous. This is normal because you’re leaving your comfort zone.” Then write about your skills that will help you succeed and the past experiences where you took a risk and everything went just well.(从“我知道你很紧张”开始。 B项:Write yourself a letter.(给自己写封信。)
可知,本段的关键词是“anxiety”,结合上文“Research from Harvard University shows people who take their nervousness about activities such as karaoke singing and public speaking as excitement enjoy the experiences more. 可知,上文中提到的这些人表现得更好,F项中的“they”指代上文中的“people who take their nervousness about activities such as karaoke singing and public speaking as excitement”,并且“worry”与“anxiety”对应。F项:And they perform better than those who try to hold down their worry.(他们比那些试图压抑焦虑的人表现得更好。)
根据下文“Say you want to go on a hike but are worried you’ll become lost, hurt or too tired to get home. Try to picture this. Next, imagine the best case: The beautiful view, the fun you’ll have, and your sense of achievement afterward.(假设你想去徒步旅行,但担心你会迷路、受伤或太累而无法回家。 You may always think about the worst case.(你可能总是想到最坏的情况。)

    My lucky bamboo
I don’t usually keep houseplants. Anything in pots gets either overwatered or underwatered. But after my diagnosis(诊断) with Covid-19, I was forced to stay at home. Feeling lonely, I loved the idea of having something new and green around.
My friend Mitch, a gardener, gave me what he said was a lucky bamboo plant in a tiny green pot with three pencil-size stalks(茎) tied together. I placed the plant in the living room where I spent much of the day. I smiled when I looked at it over the cup of coffee.
I was used to being the one who provided care, not the one who received it. Covid-19 left me weak, making it hard for me to do everyday tasks. Tending to the plant gave me a sense of achievement at a time when I sometimes felt useless.
Since my diagnosis in March 2020, far too often, it seemed, I had to rely on help from other people. The enormous change left me feeling unsettled. Watering the plant, as small an act as it was, connected me to my old identity and taught me I could still be a caregiver. Plants and people could still depend on me.
Over time, I continued to care for the plant. Soon, it had nearly doubled in height. Both the plant and I were thriving(茂盛). However, mysteriously, it began to show signs of stress. I increased my watering, then decreased it. I nestled coffee grounds(渣) into the soil to enrich it. I fed it commercial plant food. No matter what I did, the leaves kept browning and dropping to the floor. I grew more and more hopeless and uneasy.
    注意:1. 续写词数应为 100 左右;
    2. 开头已给出。
I thought harder on how to save my plant.
    _____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
As Mitch’s instructions worked, my anxiety lessened.
    _____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
I thought harder on how to save my plant. I consulted online, but still found no solution. One day, I turned to Mitch for help. As Mitch’s instructions worked, my anxiety lessened. I had accidentally discovered that the key to saving my lucky bamboo was right in front of me - it was the very act of tending to it.
As Mitch’s instructions worked, my anxiety lessened. I realized that the plant didn’t need me to be perfect, it just needed me to be there, to care and tend to it. I had been trying too hard to control everything, but this experience taught me that sometimes, the best thing we can do is simply provide the conditions for it to thrive. The days passed, the plant had returned to its former glory, and I had rediscovered my own strength - the power of care and the ability to trust myself.

    发现:discover /found
    照料:tend to /take care of
    控制:control/take control of
1】As Mitch’s instructions worked, my anxiety lessened.
2】I had accidentally discovered that the key to saving my lucky bamboo was right in front of me - it was the very act of tending to it.
