    1. After an earthquake most survivors can be expected to recover over time, particularly with the support of family and friends. Some families will be able to return to their normal life quickly, while others will have to contend with the destruction of their homes, medical problems, and injury to family members. Children especially will need time to recover from the loss of a loved one or a pet or from the closing down of their school.
Children often turn to adults for information, comfort and help. Parents should try to remain calm, answer children's questions honestly and remain understanding when they see changes in their children's behaviour.
Children react differently to an earthquake depending on their ages, developmental levels and former experiences. Some will respond by withdrawing(不与人交往), while others will have angry outbursts(爆发). Parents should remain sensitive to each child's reactions. Parents should spend time talking to their children, letting them know that it's OK to ask questions and to share their worries. Although it may be hard to find time to have these talks, parents can use regular family mealtimes or bedtimes for them. They should answer questions briefly and honestly and be sure to ask their children for their opinions and ideas. Issues may come up more than once and parents should remain patient when they answer the questions again. For young children, parents, after talking about the earthquake, might read a favourite story or have a relaxing family activity to help them calm down. Parents should also tell children they are safe and spend extra time with them. They could play games outside or read together indoors. Most importantly, be sure to tell them you love them.
    1. The underlined phrase "contend with" in Paragraph 1 can be replaced by "_______".
    A. deal with B. make up C. put off D. turn back
    2. When children ask the same question again, parents should _______.
    A. read a favourite story to comfort them
    B. ask them to help do some housework
    C. be patient and answer the question again
    D. take them out to play games
    3. Which of the following pieces of advice is NOT mentioned in the passage?
    A. Keep a close watch on children's behaviour.
    B. Tell the children they are safe.
    C. Tell the children you love them.
    D. Ask educational experts for help.
    4. What can we know from the passage?
    A. All people will recover from an earthquake quickly.
    B. Children may need a longer time to recover after an earthquake.
    C. Children should turn to their classmates for help after an earthquake.
    D. Children react in the same way as adults do to an earthquake.
    2.    Textbooks represent an 11 billion dollar industry, up from $ 8 billion in 2014. Textbook publisher Pearson is the largest publisher—of any kind—in the world.
It costs about $ 1 million to create a new textbook. A freshman textbook will have dozens of contributors, from subject-matter experts through graphic and layout artists to expert reviewers and classroom testers. Textbook publishers connect professors, instructors and students in ways that alternatives, such as open e-textbooks and open educational resources, simply do not. This connection happens not only by means of collaborative development, review and testing, but also at conferences where faculty regularly decide on their textbooks and curricula for the coming year.
It is true that textbook publishers have recently reported losses, largely due to students renting or buying used print textbooks. But this can be chalked up to the excessively high cost of their books—which has increased over 1,000 percent since 1977. A restructuring of the textbook industry may well be in order. But this does not mean the end of the textbook itself.
While they may not be as dynamic as an iPad, textbooks are not passive or lifeless. For example, over the centuries, they have simulated(模拟) dialogues in a number of ways. From 1800 to the present day, textbooks have done this by posing questions for students to answer inductively (归纳性). That means students are asked to use their individual experience to come up with answers to general questions. Today's psychology texts, for example, ask:"How much of your personality do you think you inherited?" while ones in physics say:"How can you predict where the ball you tossed will land?"
Experts observe that "textbooks come in layers, something like an onion." For an active learner, engaging with a textbook can be an interactive experience. Readers proceed at their own pace. They "customize" their books by engaging with different layers and linkages. Highlighting Post-It notes, dog-ears and other techniques allow for further customization that students value in print books over digital forms of books.
1.What does the passage say about open educational resources?
A.They contribute to teaching as much as to learning.
B.They don't profit as much as traditional textbooks do.
C.They can't connect professors and students as textbooks do.
D.They compete fiercely for customers with textbook producers.
2.What is the main cause of the publishers' losses?
A.Failure to meet student need. B.Industry restructuring.
    C.Emergence of e-books. D.Falling sales.
3.What does the textbook industry need to do?
A.Reform its structures. B.Cut its retail prices.
C.Find replacements for printed textbooks. D.Change its business strategy periodically.
4.What are students expected to do in the learning process?
A.Think carefully before answering each question.
B.Ask questions based on their own understanding.
C.Answer questions using their personal experience.
D.Give answers showing their respective personality.
5.What do experts say about students using textbooks?
A.They can digitalize the prints easily. B.They can learn in an interactive way.
C.They can purchase customized versions. D.They can adapt the material themselves.
    3.    When "Rise of the Planet of the Apes" was first shown to the public last month, a group of excited animal activists gathered on Hollywood Boulevard. But they weren't there to throw red paint on fur-coat-wearing film stars. Instead, one activist, dressed in a full-body monkey suit, had arrived with a sign praising the filmmakers: "Thanks for not using real(猿)!"
The creative team behind "Apes" used motion-capture(动作捕捉)technology to create digitalized animals, spending tens of millions of dollars on technology that records an actor's performance and later processes it with computer graphics to create a final image(图像). In this case, one of a realistic-looking ape.
Yet "Apes" is more exception than the rule. In fact, Hollywood has been hot on live animals lately. One nonprofit organization, which monitors the treatment of animals in filmed entertainment, is keeping tabs on more than 2,000 productions this year. Already, a number of films, including "Water for Elephants," "The Hangover Part Ⅱ" and "Zookeeper," have drawn the anger of activists who say the creatures acting in them haven't been treated properly.
In some cases, it's not so much the treatment of the animals on set in the studio that has activists worried; it's the off-set training and living conditions that are raising concerns. And there are questions about the films made outside the States, which sometimes are not monitored as closely as productions filmed in the States.
1.Why did the animal activists gather on Hollywood Boulevard?
A.To see famous film stars. B.To oppose wearing fur coats.
C.To raise money for animal protection. D.To express thanks to some filmmakers.
2.What does paragraph 2 mainly talk about?
A.The cost of making "Apes." B.The creation of digitalized apes.

    A.Listing completely. B.Directing professionally.
    C.Promoting successfully. D.Watching carefully.
4.What can we infer from the last paragraph about animal actors?
A.They may be badly treated. B.They should take further training.
C.They could be traded illegally. D.They would lose popularity.
    4.    Scientists have already studied how dogs respond to people's behavior and speech. But researchers are just scratching the surface of human-cat interactions. House cats do appear to respond to the expressions on people's faces. Cats can also tell different human voices. But can cats recognize their own names?
Saito, a psychologist at Sophia University in Tokyo, and her colleagues decided to find the answer. They asked the owners of 77 cats to say four nouns of similar length followed by the cat's name. Cats gradually lost interest in each random(随机的) noun. But when the owner said a cat's name, the cats reacted strongly. They moved their ears, head or tail, changed their back paw's position. And, of course, they miaowed.
These findings mean that cats join the ranks of animals that have shown some sort of response in experiments to the names people give them. Those animals include dogs, dolphins, apes and parrots. It's hard to compare the number of words across species, though. Some dogs, for example, can tell the difference between hundreds of human words.
The study makes a strong case that cats are perfectly capable of recognizing their own names. Getting a treat or hug as a reward is part of how cats learn to recognize a name. However, owners may also use their cat's name in a negative setting, like yelling at Fluffy to get off the stove. As a result, cats can probably learn to associate these familiar utterances with good and bad experiences, Saito notes. And that might not be great for human-cat relations. So only using a cat's name in a positive context and using a different term in a negative context could help cats and humans communicate more clearly.
So cats may recognize their names. But will they come when called? Don't get your hopes up.
1.What made cats react strongly according to Saito's study?
A.Their owners. B.Their own names. C.A random noun. D.A delicious meal.
    2.The findings show _________.
A.all dogs will respond on hearing their names
B.it's extremely difficult to tell cats' names from dogs'
C.scientists know how to tell the difference between animals
D.there is difference in the number of words recognized among animals
3.Which of the following could replace the underlined word "utterances" in Paragraph 4?
    A.words B.situations C.observations D.owners
4.What should people avoid to improve human-cat communication?
A.Giving a treat or hug as a reward. B.Calling their name in a positive context.
C.Using a different term in a negative setting. D.Associating their name with bad experiences.

When I saw her tonight she smiled and recognized me. I smiled back at her. She looked relaxed even though she was still busy doing her job. I had noticed her several times this last few months and she always looked so happy. Tonight when I talked with her I noticed her name tag. Her name is Pamela.
Pamela works at the express checkouts in a busy supermarket. She deals with problems when the self-service checkout experiences a problem (no price on product, machine problems, etc.). She monitors these checkouts and usually has hardly dealt with one complaint before another is created.
When I first talked to Pamela, I had called her to the checkout I was using. There wasn't any problem with the checkout though. My problem, that is to say, my concern was about Pamela. She looked tired and was under a lot of stress as she quickly moved from one checkout to the next. It's a bit of a fire-fighting job.
I told Pamela that she needed to slow down. I told her she wasn't getting paid enough to be working as hard as she was working. I told her that we, the customers, could wait and it was very bad for her health to be putting herself under such pressure. I told her that our expectations were not as hard as the ones she set for herself. Pamela told me she would slow down. I could tell she was touched that not only did I notice her stress but I chose to talk to her about it and was concerned for her health. I gently told her things had to change. I told her I would be looking out for her in future to see if she had taken my advice on board. She smiled and said, "I promise that I will next time."

Issues may come up more than once and parents should remain patient when they answer the questions again."
Children especially will need time to recover from..."
题干中的"are...expected to"与倒数第二段第四句中提到的"are asked to..."
Instead, one activist, dressed in a full-body monkey suit, had arrived with a sign praising the filmmakers: 'Thanks for not using real apes!'"
The creative team behind 'Apes' used motion-capture technology to create digitalized animals... records an actor's performance and later processes it with computer graphics to create a final image."
One nonprofit organization, which monitors the treatment of animals in filmed entertainment"可知,该非营利性组织旨在监督电影娱乐业对待动物的方式,所以画线短语与monitor(监督)意义最为接近,故D项“密切关注”正确。
In some cases, it's not so much the treatment of the animals on set in the studio that has activists worried; it's the off-set training and living conditions that are raising concerns."
But when the owner said a cat's name, the cats reacted strongly. They moved their ears, head or tail, changed their back paw's position. And, course, they miaowed."

    8.答案:
    Dear Sir/Madame,
I'm Li Hua, a high school student from Beijing. Interested in the 2022 Winter Olympics, I'm writing to apply to be a volunteer in the games.
I feel I have the necessary qualifications and experience needed for the voluntary job. Above all, I'm a fluent English speaker so that I have no difficulty communicating with the visitors. Besides, keen on sports, I'm quite familiar with different events and the locations of the venues as a local. Equally importantly, I previously served as a volunteer several times, which is also an advantage over other candidates. As a warm-hearted and unselfish teenager, I do believe I can do the job well if I'm granted a chance.
Any favorable consideration of my application or a personal interview would be appreciated.
I'm looking forward to your early reply.
    Yours
    Li Hua
    9.答案:
    Paragraph 1:
When I saw her she was still doing her job but there was such a difference. I praised the new her. Pamela said that other customers would have to wait for their turn while she dealt with another customer. She told me the change had significantly improved her health. She added that she's also shared what I said with her colleagues. As I walked away from Pamela my heart was lightened. She has taken my advice on board and tried to slow down her working pace. A day's work means just that. It doesn't mean that one should put two days' work into one day.
    Paragraph 2:
I am proud of myself. Not only have I caused Pamela to reflect on the pressure she was putting herself under, but also she has encouraged her colleagues in the supermarket to do the same in turn. I really feel very happy and satisfied for my concern and act of kindness do make a difference to those in need. It's just a simple act of love that costs no money. So my friends, our kindness doesn't have to be material, but just loving. Bless you all for all you do for others.
