    A

I really did not know much about ewaste until this passing of Earth Day. I feel pity because I am actually skilled in the technology field. While I appreciate all the ways that technology has made our lives better, it comes at an environment cost.

Electronic waste, also known as “ewaste”, is the term used to describe the rapidly growing stream of waste from useless electronics. These items include anything from computers, TVs and phones to washing machines and refrigerators. Most of these electronics are often not rubbish, but simply given up for the latest version (版本) on the market.

Findings show that we produced 41.8 million tons of ewaste all over the world in 2014. Even more surprisingly, it is believed that less than onesixth is properly recycled or reused. While the bad influence of ewaste is big and growing, most people probably don't realize its reach. The lack (缺乏) of proper recycling leads to harmful materials going into the environment. Harmful materials cause all sorts of health problems.

Maybe the worst part of this problem is that most ewaste from developed countries is exported (出口) to developing countries, which is picked over by locals who want to mine useful materials from it. The improper recovery methods are often performed by local women and children. Many survive on mining these products, but with poor practices and regulations, it comes at a much higher cost—the health of the planet and its people.

2.According to the text, how does the public see ewaste?

A.They try to avoid it. B.They think nothing of it.

C.They try to make use of it. D.They make lots of research on it.

The first group of 30 patients was admitted to Wuhan's Leishenshan Hospital yesterday (February 8), which means that two makeshift hospitals for fighting the new pneumonia (肺炎)—Huoshenshan Hospital and Leishenshan Hospital—were put into use. The two hospitals only have inpatients and don't have outpatients. The target patients are the ones with novel coronavirus (冠状病毒) pneumonia confirmed in hospital.

Let's go back to the afternoon of January 23, 2020. Wuhan's Urban Renewal Authority (URA) has called a special meeting for the construction of a special hospital for new pneumonia patients, including the China Construction Third Engineering Division. Two days later, on the first day of the Lunar New Year, the Wuhan new CAP epidemic prevention and control headquarters again held an emergency dispatch meeting and decided to build another hospital named Leishenshan within half a month.

The construction of the two hospitals is a race to the death against the epidemic. Under the eyes of 100 million “cloud supervisor”, we admire the speed of the construction of these two hospitals, but the hardships and strength behind are far beyond our imagination. As of February 5, more than 1,000 managers and 8,000 operators were working day and night, namely 24 hours of seamless construction work, and there was a continuous flow of more than 1,400 sets of large-scale mechanical equipment and transport vehicles on the spot.

Some builders walk more than 34,000 steps a day. Work models include “day plus night\”, “5+2”, “two shifts”—work 24 hours on end a day. The last unit has just finished laying sand on the site, the next unit immediately enters the field to lay anti-seepage membrane. Dozens of jobs are involved. There are too many units and individuals involved in the construction. No matter how great or small their contributions are, they are all trying to fulfill their own responsibility, social responsibility or corporate responsibility.

My dream of working in a flower shop had its roots in my grandmother's garden, always in bloom, where I made bunches with whatever I could get my hands on.  However, I wasn't prepared for the people. Their stories impressed me long after I locked up for the night.

I always enjoyed reading the messages that went along with each bunch. Most were what you would expect, plenty of “I Love You” and  “Get Well Soon.” We got “Happy Birthday”, “Happy Anniversary” and “Thinking of You” requests that phone messages were written in shorthand: H.              B., H. A., T. O. Y.

I would laugh at messages that seemed too sugary or boring, and it disheartened me when customers asked what their sympathy card should say. But I also understood that finding the right words can be a monumental task and that sometimes those words just happen to be the same ones everyone else is using.

I have sold flowers to single men and women; to color-blind fathers shopping with their precocious daughters, to new parents, grandparents, aunts and uncles, to engaged 20-somethings and couples celebrating 50 years. I've given flowers to homeless men who have in turn given them to pretty girls in summer dresses. People buy flowers when they're in love, in trouble, drunk, devastated, excited and sometimes for no obvious reason. I took photos of card messages and told my favorite shop stories to co-workers, family and friends, but still so much has gotten away, Precious moments made all the more precious by the fact that they have already come and gone.  Now I gauge  months by what's in season:  sunflowers in July,  dahlias (大丽花) in August,  roses and maple in October, pine in December, hyacinth (风信子) in March.

A  favorite  of mine  is  tulip  magnolia (紫玉兰),  the way the buds (花蕾)  break into flowers and the flowers into many colors on lawns, all in a matter of weeks while it's snowing cherry blossoms. How surprisingly beautiful the life of flowers can be.

8.Why did the author like reading the messages going with the bunches?

A.They conveyed friendship, love and best wishes.

B.They reminded the author of his past.

C.They were sugary and the author found them funny.

D.They helped to attract customers to buy flowers.

由第二段第一、二句“I always enjoyed reading the messages that went along with each bunch. Most were what you would expect, plenty of ‘I Love You’ and ‘Get Well Soon.’” 故选A。

9.What can we infer from Paragraph 3?

A.The messages were boring because of repetitions.

B.The author likes tulip magnolia because of its growing place.

C.The author found it depressing to talk about sympathy cards.

D.The author learned a lot in her grandmother's garden.

由第三段中的“it disheartened me when customers asked what their sympathy card should say”可知,当顾客们询问他们那些慰问卡上应该写什么时,作者感到沮丧,故选C。

10.What does the underlined word “gauge” probably mean in Paragraph 4?

    A.Spend.         B.Forget.

    C.Arrange.         D.Measure.

由第四段中的“Now I gauge months by what's in season: sunflowers in July, dahlias (大丽花) in August, roses and  maple in October, pine in December, hyacinth (风信子) in March.”

11.What does the author learn from the flower shop?

A.She understands that everyone has a favorite flower.

B.She learns that life is more beautiful with flowers.

C.She realizes that flowers sell well with message cards.

D.She finds out that message cards are worth cherishing.

由最后一段最后一句“How surprisingly beautiful the life of flowers can be.”

You may already know that more than a million years ago, glaciers, or vast blankets of moving ice, covered one third of the earth. You also may know tens of thousands of years ago, the glaciers started to melt, retreating to their current position in the Antarctic and Greenland. You may even know that glaciers also exist in all the world's great mountain regions. But do you know that glaciers cover about 6 billion square miles of the earth and store about 75 percent of the earth's fresh water.

A glacier forms in a cold climate when a winter's snow does not completely melt during the following summer. Snow continues to accumulate and partially melt year after year. As the accumulated snow becomes heavier, the lower layers crushes under the weight and changes into ice. Over time, the mass of ice thickens and moves. The ice is either pulled slowly downhill by gravity—as in the valley glaciers found in the Alps, on the Alaskan coast, and in the Western United States—or forced outward in all directions by its own weight—as in the ice sheets and icecaps covering most of Greenland and Antarctica. During the glaciations (冰川作用), a glacier moves (usually about 3 feet per day). It picks up pieces of rock that cut and polish the land and carve out steep-side valleys. During deglaciation (冰消作用), a glacier withdraws and often leaves large deposits of sand and stones. The process of glaciation and deglaciation formed the Great Lakes in North American during the Ice Ages.

Some scientists believe that ice ages similar to those of the past will occur, but they disagree on when this will happen. Other scientists think that global warming will occur instead, melting the glaciers and flooding areas as sea levels rise. No one knows for certain which event will occur, but neither predicts well for mankind.

12.What happens to a glacier during glaciation?

    A.It moves. B.It leaves stones.

C.It leaves sand. D.It forms the Great Lakes.

A.Vast blankets of ice will cover the earth.

B.Glaciers in the Antarctic will increase in size.

C.Plant and animal life in many related areas will be destroyed.

D.A winter's snow may not completely melt during the following summer.

根据第三段第二句“Other scientists think that global warming will occur instead, melting the glaciers and flooding areas as sea levels rise.”

14.What is the attitude of the writer towards the argument between scientists in the last paragraph?

    A.Optimistic.  B.Objective.

The modern garden has a history going back many thousands of years. Early humans were hunters and gatherers, and didn't usually stay in one place for a long time. Instead, they travelled from place to place following the food according to the seasons. During the Neolithic Period this slowly began to change; humans started to grow certain plants, which meant they could remain in one place and grow their own food. The first “garden” was a vegetable garden, where early humans grew different types of plants for food.

Early agriculture in Europe not only included edible (可食用的) plants such as wheat or lentils, but also included many decorative plants for other purposes. Plants for medicine were grown, as were herbs and spices (香料) for flavoring or preserving food. Certain plants also had religious or spiritual value and were grown not only because they were useful or edible. Growing plants not only for food was the beginning of gardening.

Gardens today are beautiful places to go and relax, but have had many purposes over the years. In the past, they were planted to honor the gods, or used in religious ceremonies such as funerals and weddings. They were also a way to show that their owners were rich or powerful. Ancient rulers created huge gardens to display their wealth, in the same way that large palaces were symbols of prosperity (繁荣). In Roman times the garden became an extension of the house, representing the owner's status in society, rather than a holy place.

As gardens have developed, design and beauty have become more and more important. Humans have learnt to control nature and to design gardens carefully, like creating a work of art or a building. The Gardens of Versailles in France are an excellent example of “garden architecture”; everything is symmetrical (对称的) and even the trees are pruned (修剪) to fit in with the design.
