Ⅰ.阅读

With all the recent concern about the environment, people want to see their money used to better the planet. Here are four wellknown environmental organizations.
World Wildlife Fund (WWF)
The World Wildlife Fund is perhaps one of the bestknown organizations for the protection of endangered species and their habitats around the world. They've been around for over 45 years. You can donate through their website worldwildlife.org, join their organization as a member, or adopt an animal through their online adoption center.
National Geographic Society (NGS)
National Geographic Society is wellknown for their magazine and their specials on TV. The organization itself is one of the longestrunning in the world—they've been around since 1888 focusing on exploration and conservation of forests, oceans, habitats, species and societies. You choose to donate through the website nationalgeographic.com, buy something at their online store, or order a magazine subscription.
National Wildlife Federation (NWF)
Founded officially in 1937, the National Wildlife Federation tries to protect wildlife at all costs. In fact, they believe that having the public educated is the best way to help the environment—the more you know, the more you can protect the world we live in. Donations to the NWF can be made through their website nwf.org or through other options, like matching gifts, workplace giving, or memorial donations.
EcologyFund. com
Set up in 1976, EcologyFund.com is run on user clicks. Advertisers buy ad space on the site every time someone clicks. The money goes to buy endangered wilderness land to protect it from companies that would destroy it. So far, EcologyFund.com has bought land in many areas. The best thing about this site is that you needn't donate any money—all you have to do is click.

One young lady is being praised for perfect manners for an apology note she wrote to the National Park, after she reportedly took a rock home as a souvenir (纪念品). In expressing her regret, the girl also returned the stolen rock to the park and even gave a donation.
On Aug. 17, the National Park shared the tale of the note to their Facebook page, where it has since been liked over 5,200 times, and shared about 700.
“Dear Park Ranger (护林员), Deep Creek was awesome! I especially liked Tom Branch Falls,” the youngster, named Karina, began her letter, “I loved it so much. I wanted to have a souvenir to come home with me.”
“So I took a rock. I'm sorry, and I want to return it,” she said. “Also, here's a donation!”
Lucky for Karina, the park rangers were moved by her sincere apologies for the petty theft, and even wrote back.
“Dear Karina, Thank you so much for returning the rock! It has made its way back to Tom Branch Falls. We are so glad you enjoyed your visit,” the park officials wrote in their Facebook post.
“Already, you are becoming an amazing steward for the park. Thank you for recognizing that what is in the park should stay in the park. If every visitor took a rock home, that would mean 11 million rocks would be gone from the park every year!” they shared.
The park rangers went on to explain the importance of rocks in the Natural Park as homes for “hundreds” of creatures, including salamanders.
“Now that you know to leave nature the way you find it, we hope you will help share this message with others,” the officials concluded, “It is always a good thing to give another the chance to discover!”

When he was 22, Rob Stewart traveled the world for four years. He wanted to call attention to the mistreatment of sharks. His 2007 film, Sharkwater, documents the cruel practice of removing sharks' fins (鳍) for money and leaving the animals to die. In his latest documentary, Revolution, Stewart takes on an even bigger challenge: climate change.
The Canadian filmmaker says that climate change has harmed people and places everywhere: “It is stronger than any government or organization. If we educate people, they will make better decisions about protecting natural resources.”
According to a recent report on climate change, “The atmosphere and ocean have warmed, the amounts of snow and ice have reduced, and sea levels have risen.” These developments are endangering crops, wildlife, fish, and even people.
Stewart says that the consequences of climate change will be irreversible unless people take action, especially young people.“It's up to kids to be the moral compass (道德指南) of society,” he believes, “and say, ‘Guys, this is not right.’”
Many kids took action after seeing Sharkwater. Elementary school students in the Northern Mariana Islands, for example, got their local government to ban the sale of shark fins.
Felix Finkbeiner, 17, of Germany is also part of the “revolution” to save the planet. In 2007, Felix started a youth group called Plant-for-the-Planet, whose motto is “Stop Talking. Start Planting.” The group raises money to plant trees. So far, Plant-for-the-Planet has planted nearly 200 trees around the world. “Future generations are the ones who will be suffering the most from inaction (不作为),” Felix says. His goal is to plant millions of additional trees.
“When we started four years ago,” Felix tells Stewart in Revolution, “we thought we had to save the polar bear. We thought we had to save the environment. But soon after, we found out that it's about our future, that we have to save our own future.”

Garbage sorting has become a hot issue around China, especially after Shanghai began carrying out a regulation on July 1.
Beijing, as a forerunner in environmental protection, has thus been expected to follow suit. The capital of the country has long been campaigning for sorting and recycling household waste, as part of its environmental drive for sustainable growth, local media reported.
The current regulation gives garbage sorting responsibilities to government departments, property management groups and other organizations. It also gives rules for companies, outlining how they're responsible for waste collection, transportation and treatment. Only individuals are not subject to responsibilities.
The long-awaited revision will soon change the situation, “Taking out the trash without sorting it properly will be illegal.” said Sun Xinjun, director of the Beijing Commission of Urban Management. In Shanghai, violators are now fined up to 200 yuan ($30) for trash-sorting violations. The maximum fine in Beijing will not be less than that, he said.
The Beijing city government first set out to promote garbage sorting in 2009.Authorities have since called on citizens to sort their household waste into four types—recyclable waste, kitchen trash, dangerous waste and others—and leave it in a corresponding dustbin or trash can. Blue-colored dustbins signify items within are recyclable, green represents kitchen trash, red corresponds to dangerous materials and grey to other waste.
To promote the awareness of garbage sorting and expand the base of participants, authorities have employed workers to help residents on the spot. With intelligent devices, those who throw in recyclable waste at given sites will be rewarded with bonus points, which can be used to buy daily goods. At some communities, there are no color-coded dustbins. Instead, a scheduled garbage collection service is offered to help improve the environment. In other communities, workers offer a door-to-door service to collect recyclables or kitchen waste.
Beijing Environmental Sanitation Engineering Group has been promoting new garbage sorting facilities such as recycling cabinets and smart kitchen waste trash cans since 2016, Xinhua News Agency reported. Nearly 26,000 metric tons of household waste is generated across Beijing on a daily basis and 29 terminal garbage disposal facilities are working at full capacity. Nearly 9.3 million tons of household waste was processed in the city last year.
