This time he hunted n a land near Watfrd City, N.D., in the underppulated western part f the state. In the cld winter, he tried a new spt and frgt t bring his cell phne. He hiked mre than half a mile with tw dgs t a harvested wheat field.
    Eyes fixed in the hrizn in expectatin f anther pheasant(野鸡)taking flight, Richard stepped n a thin crust(层)f snw n a canal. It cllapsed and drpped him.
    Realizing that he was in truble and was ging t hurt himself Richard was suddenly picking up a lt f speed. His left leg hit first, and he lay n his side t reach fr his shtgun, unladed it and used it as a walking stick. When he was party up, he slipped and slid back dwn, because ne f his feet gt stuck between tw rcks. Richard tld himself that if he didn't get himself ut f the canal, he wasn't ging t have a very gd night.
    Richard walked his ft free and climbed mre slwly and cautiusly ut f the canal. Richard immediately realized the difficulty f the task befre him. The accident ccurred at abut 2 p.m., and it was nearly 5 p.m. with the rad far away and the sun setting.
    Richard fcused n crawling(爬)t safety. Even with his gun's supprt, hpping(单脚跳)was impractical. Instead, he sat dwn and pushed himself backward less than 40 inches at a time with his gd leg. He was stubbrn and sure that he must hld n. Temperatures drpped belw zer vernight, and his glves and bts gt wet. His hands and feet sn were cmpletely numb.

    The Chase Is On
    It was dark utside, just after the dinner hur, when Crrea and Disley and their three kids climbed int their black Cadillac(a car). As they prepared t leave the parking lt f the restaurant where they'd just eaten, a dark blue Hnda with heavily clured windws crssed their path.
    Y, babe,” Crrea yelled, "that's that car. That's that car!”
    Earlier in the day, Disley had mentined a reprt n Amber Alert issued fr a missing 8-year-ld girl in Brimfield, Massachusetts, less than 30 miles frm the family's hme in Springfield. The car that passed them was the same make and mdel as the ne that had been referred t in the news.
    Crrea tk a hard right ut f the parking lt and clsely fllwed the Hnda in an effrt t see the car number. The driver immediately sped up and blew thrugh a stp sign. Crrea shcked his family by fllwing suit(ding the same as the Hnda). He wasn't abut t lse the Hnda. "Being a father, I had t d what I had t d," he later tld ABC News.
    The Hnda pulled arund the back f a stre." They're trying t get rid f me!" Crrea yelled. When the Hnda came arund t the frnt, Crrea caught up and pulled ahead, trying t cut it ff. The Hnda hit the brakes and sped away. The Cadillac's lights flashed n the driver- a yung man with black hair, pulling a sweat-shirt up ver his face. They culd see him frcing a girl's head dwn in the back, as if trying t hide her.
    Disley, wh by then had called 911, was reprting their situatin t the plice. “It's him!” she yelled int the phne. “The kidnapper (绑匪)!”
    Cnfused, the plice asked, “The blue Hnda?”
    “Yes, it's him!”
    Crrea stayed clse behind the Hnda, cutting ff cars t d s. They were nw racing dwn the rad at 100 mph. “He's ging thrugh red lights!” Disley yelled t the plice.
    Crrea slammed n the brakes t avid the cming car and then hit the gas t catch up." Get him, Dad!” his sn shuted excitedly frm the back.
    Keeping n the Hnda's tail, Crrea discvered anther prblem: the lw-gas light was flashing n the Cadillac's dashbard. In fact, it had been flashing fr much f the 15-minute chase. What's wrse, they'd find ut later that the suspensin (减震悬架) had been damaged during the chase-it was brken.

Instead, Granny saw it as a challenge. “If yu really had a gun in yur pcket, yu wuld've pulled it ut and led with that first,” she shuted at him, apparently unwrried.
    She was right. The criminal didn't have a gun. He instead reached int the windw, grabbed her, and tried t pull her ut f the van. He pulled pen the dr, wildly catching Granny’s arms. Granny leaned her shulder inside t press the hrn (喇叭) and started yelling t make peple arund ntice what was happening. With the dr nw pen, she held tight the steering wheel with ne arm and started kicking the man anywhere her ft culd make cntact. This tall wman had quite a reach.

    Inside I was unsure f myself, but his wrds inspired me — Yu never knw what yu are capable f until yu frce yurself t d it.
    Sn I passed the swim test. All left was t practice and learn first aid, CPR(心肺复苏), and prcedures fr different land and water-based emergencies.
    Wrk started sn. A well-intentined yet anxius feeling in me sn passed. Days, weeks, and mnths went by withut incident; emergencies were rare. The skills and training I had s carefully studied and acquired seemed unnecessary.

    I std in hrrr trying t think why she hadn't cme hme. As the mental fg began t lift, I remembered she was visiting her friend that evening. Perhaps she stayed there fr the night. It was 1:30 a.m., but I raced t the phne and dialed a number.
    "Hell?" The vice was heavy with sleep.
    "Hey. Srry t wake yu. Becki didn't cme hme tnight and I was wndering if she stayed at yur place."
    "N, she left here a few hurs ag. She shuld have been hme at least by midnight!" The vice n the ther end began t reflect my wn panic.
    Over the next frty-five minutes I alternated between lying in pray and pacing the flr in anxiety.
    At 2:15 a.m. lights appeared as a car turned up ur lng driveway. I culd tell immediately that it was nt my daughter's car.

    Once we gt clser, we discvered the waves had pulled a by and a girl frm the pl and int the pen sea. I knew that the nearest bat wuld take at least 30 minutes t reach us. Waiting fr help wasn't a chice. I wasn't used t this srt f emergency--I’d never been trained as a lifeguard-but I didn't think twice abut trying t save them. I suppsed in a way I wanted t impress everyne: at 19, a deal like that can seem like a gd pprtunity t shw ff.
    Mises and I dived int the water and it tk us 10 minutes t get t them. When we finally reached them, they were almst lifeless with nly their heads cming in and ut f the water. We culd tell they were still alive frm their small breaths but it was clear they wuldn't have been able t stay there much lnger. I held the by and pulled him ver my bard. Myself and all f the fficers at the plice statin dealing with this crime als feel very sad fr the family ver what is a cruel and mean-spirited crime, especially during the Christmas perid.”
    Waffle still hasn’t been fund. Plice are lking fr and fllwing up infrmatin. Cathryn said, “This Christmas was difficult as I’ve gt a five-year-ld grandsn s I had t frce a smile fr him. We haven’t tld him exactly what happened t Waffle yet. Christmas was extremely upsetting fr us with my daughter Mary breaking up with her byfriend.     I was studying a Barbie and ding sme simple math in my head when suddenly an earthshaking clap f thunder rared frm the strm utside. I jumped at the nise, drpping the dll t the flr. The lights flickered (闪烁) nce and died, cvering everything in a blanket f blackness. Thunder cntinued t shake the sky and lightning illuminated the stre fr secnds, casting frightening shadws n my mind.
