October might seem to be pumpkin month in the U.S. The holiday of Halloween (万圣节) comes on October 31. Americans around the country are already using social media to show off their pumpkin growing and carving skills.
Pumpkins are round, orange fruits related to squashes (南瓜小果) and gourds (葫芦). People use their flesh and seeds for food, but they are also popular decorations in the fall.
Two big pumpkins recently made headlines in the U.S. A farmer in the northeastern state of Rhode Island broke the record for the largest pumpkin ever grown in North America. Richard Wallace’s pumpkin weighed 1,026 kilograms. It broke his son’s record from 2015. Ron Wallace’s pumpkin only weighed 1,011 kilograms last year. A schoolteacher in the northwestern state of Washington brought her large pumpkin to an event in California. Her pumpkin was the champion, weighing 866 kilograms. It turns out that Cindy Tobeck’s pumpkin grew from one of the seeds from Ron Wallace’s pumpkin from 2015.
While those pumpkins are large, they are still not the largest in the world. According to the website BigPumpkins.com, Richard Wallace’s pumpkin is only the second-heaviest pumpkin of the year. A man in Belgium produced a pumpkin that weighed almost 1,200 kilograms. Smithsonian magazine wrote a story about people who try to grow large pumpkins. In 35 years, the size of record pumpkins has grown from about 225 kilograms to over 1,000 kilograms. Pumpkin farmers trying to grow record fruits are taking the seeds of champion pumpkins from one year and breeding them with other large pumpkins.
But people are not just growing pumpkins. They are carving them, too. One Twitter user from Britain recently posted a photo of a pumpkin designed to look like U.S. presidential candidate Donald Trump. No word of a Hillary Clinton pumpkin design. But one pumpkin farmer in California allows visitors to shoot small pumpkins out of a cannon. The targets? Large paper cut-outs of both Trump and Clinton.
    24. According to the text, which of the following statements is FALSE?
    A. Halloween falls on October every year.
    B. In 1981, the then record pumkin weighed about 866 kilograms.
    C. In the U. S., pumpkins are used for entertainment as well as for food.
    D. The new record pumpkin usually has biological relationship with the previous record pumpkin.
    25. So far, the heaviest pumpkin was produced in ________.
    A. Britain B. Belgium
    C. the northeastern state of Rhode Island
    D. the northwestern state of Washington
    26. The underlined word “breeding” in the 4th paragraph probably means _______.
    A. improving the quality
    B. speeding up the growing process
    C. strengthening the ability to resist disease
    D. producing young ones in a controlled way
    27. How is the last paragraph mainly developed?

    C.
Have you ever tried to draw a straight line, only to find it turns out all wrong? Or show yourself off at a party but the song that you’d practiced so many a time suddenly become more difficult?
I’ve had both these experiences. As a senior student, I have to take a great many exams. Each time, I enter one, thinking “I cannot fail this time.” I get a low mark.
But don’t be surprised—it’s not because we don’t try, or make enough preparations, or take it seriously. On the contrary, it is because we put ourselves under too much pressure. It is thinking “I must...” that makes us taste the terrible flavor of failure.
We often say to our friends, “Don’t be too hard on yourself!” But when we set our own goals, we may not listen to our own advice.
In doing so, we are making our path to success increasingly difficult.
So why not throw away this crazy pursuit to get the best? Just face the problem lying before you with a calm mind, enjoy the hard work and you will succeed.
In my opinion, keeping a calm state of mind is a skill for life. For people who want to succeed, realizing this is a very important lesson.
So next time when you’re trying to draw a straight line or put on a performance, tell yourself, “If I can just do it better than last time, it’s a success.”
Keep a calm state of mind, and you will be happy whether you succeed or fail.
    28. Which of the following is an idea the author is trying to get across?
    A. You don’t need to practice so many times to sing a song well.

When computer servers operate a complex program, they can get very hot. Cooling the servers can be costly. So researchers asked what would happen if the heat created by the servers could be captured and used? Data centers of large Internet companies such as Google and Microsoft have thousands of computer servers. As these servers process information, they create large amounts of heat, so they need huge cooling systems. These systems send the heat into the air.
The Dutch company Nerdalize thinks paying for electricity to operate the servers and then paying again to cool them is a waste of energy. So it developed a device called the e-Radiator. It is a computer server that also works as a heating source.
Boaz Leupe is the chief executive officer of Nerdalize. He says the e-Radiator saves money because companies don’t have to pay to cool their servers. “...The kilowatt hour you are using is used twice -- once to heat the home and once to compute the client’s task without the cooling overhead.” He says five homeowners in The Netherlands are testing the heating device in their homes.
“We reimburse the electricity the server uses, and that we can do because of the computer clients on the other side, and, in that way, homeowners actually get heating for free, and computer users don’t have to pay for the overhead of the data center.”
Jan Visser is one of the participants in the year-long experiment. He says the amount of heat produced by the e-Radiator depends on the work being done by the computer server. He says it cannot be used as the primary source of heat. But he is ready to try it. He says if it provides enough warmth, he will be able to use his home’s heating system less, which will save him money.
Nerdalize says e-Radiators create heat temperatures of up to 55 degrees Celsius. It says the devices could save users up to $440 in heating costs a year.
    32. What is the main function of the e-Radiator?
    A. It can make the computer work faster.
    B. It can be used as the primary source of heat.
    C. It can cool the computer servers
    D. It can absorb the heat produced by computers
    33. The underlined word “costly” in paragraph1isclosest in meaning to ______.
    A. difficult B. easy B. complicated D. expensive
    34. According to Jan Visser, we can infer that his attitudes towards the e-Radiator is _______.

40 We love to feel important and so does everyone else. People will talk to us for hours if we allow them to talk about themselves. If we can make people feel important in a sincere and appreciative way, then we will win all the friends we could ever dream of.

根据第二段中的信息“…paying for electricity to operate the servers and then paying again to cool them is a waste of energy. So it developed a device called the e-Radiator.”以及第三段中的信息“He says the e-Radiator saves money because companies don’t have to pay to cool their servers.”可知,the e-Radiator的主要作用是“使电脑的服务器冷却”,由此可知正确答案应为C项。
    33. D. 词义猜测题。根据文中第三段中的“…don’t have to pay to cool their servers.”、第五段中的“which will save him money”以及最后一段中的“It says the devices could save users up to $440 in heating costs a year.”可知,此处下划线单词所在句子的含义应是“冷却服务器费用是很高的”,由此可知,costly的含义是“昂贵的”,与expensive意义相同。所以,正确答案应为D项。
    34. B. 态度评价题。根据第五段的信息“He says if it provides enough warmth, he will be able to use his home’s heating system less, which will save him money.”可知,Jan Visser对于the e-Radiator的看法应是乐观的。故正确答案为B项。

I visited the Capital Museum during the winter vacation or explored Chinese history and culture. I
    and
choose it as my destination because of it houses a variety of exhibits, like paintings, antiques, crafts and
    chose
so on. Beside, the architecture of the museum features the combination of tradition and modernity.
    Besides
The visit is fair worthwhile. I am amazing at the wisdom of Chinese people and impressed by the
    fairly amazed
    brilliance of Chinese civilization.
Feel a itch for the visit? I’ d like∧show you around the museum. Waiting for your coming!

    Text 1
W: What are you getting Dad for his birthday this year?
M: I was thinking of getting him a new suit and tie. He’s had the same set since we were born.

    Text 2
W: Are you excited about getting married next month?
M: I am, but there’s still so much to do. We haven’t even figured out what music we want at the reception, or what kind of cake we’re going to have.

    Text 3
M: I’m going to Italy for the first time. I know you studied abroad there. Do you have any suggestions about what I should do while I’m there?
W: You have to eat pizza, of course. The Leaning Tower of Pisa is incredible. You should definitely visit it.

    Text 4
M: This dinner you made is amazing! What did you put in the soup?
W: It’s mostly vegetables and chicken. I added some tomato sauce.

    Text 5
M: Excuse me. Are there any bookstores around here on campus?
W: What kinds of books do you want to buy?
M: Nothing in particular. I just want to kill some time.
W: There is a big supermarket in the west corner of our university. Maybe you can find what you want there.

    Text 6
M: What brings you in today?
W: As you know, I have pretty high blood pressure, so I’ve been trying to stay away from salt, but my blood pressure isn’t going down.
M: Well, new research shows that a low salt diet may actually increase your risk for heart disease, surprisingly. Right now, you can safely eat around 2.3 grams of salt a day, which is about one teaspoon, but a new study has shown that people who eat more than 7 grams of salt did not increase their risk for heart disease.
W: OK, so what does all that mean?
M: Well, you shouldn’t necessarily go out there and eat a bunch of salty food. It just means that it’s not as harmful as we originally thought.

    Text 7
M: It’s your first day of high school tomorrow. Are you nervous?
W: Not really. Most of my friends from junior high will be there, and I already know which classes I’m taking. I guess I’m nervous about finding my classes. The campus is super big, and I’m worried I’ll get lost.
M: It might take you a few days to get comfortable with everything, but you’ll get the hang of it.
W: Soccer practice starts soon, too, so I’m really
    excited for that.
M: Do you want me to take you to school tomorrow?
W: No, I think I’d like to ride my bike. That’s what all my friends are doing.

    Text 8
M: Have you ever been to Chicago, Sarah?
W: Yeah, I’ve been there three times. First, I went with my family for Christmas when I was ten years old. Since then, I’ve been there twice with friends: once when I was twenty just before school started, and then again last spring.
M: Oh, cool. Did you like it?
W: Yeah. Chicago is a great city.
M: That’s good to hear. I’m going there to visit my uncle in July.
W: Well, if you are there in early July, you should check out this amazing food festival. It’s called “Taste of Chicago”. It’s expensive, but it’s so worth it. And it’s much more exciting than the Sears Tower.
M: But I was planning to visit the Sears Tower! It is one of the tallest buildings in the world.
W: It’s actually called the Willis Tower now. And it’s also not the tallest building.
M: When did it change its name?
    W: In 2009.
M: That’s surprising. I didn’t know that. I bet many people still call it the Sears Tower.
W: Yeah, and many people probably still think it’s the world’s tallest building.

    Text 9
W: Hello. Can I take your order?
M: Yes. I’d like a large pizza with mushrooms and green peppers.
W: Would you like anything else?
M: Well, can I get extra cheese on that pizza?
W: All right. Would you care for any breadsticks or drinks with your order? Actually, we have a Friday night special going on right now. If you order any large pizza and drink, we’ll throw in a free order of breadsticks.
M: Uh, sure. And what drink comes with the pizza?
W: Either apple juice or orange juice.
    M: I’ll take orange juice.
W: Okay. Your total comes to $15.19. And could I have your name, please?
M: Uh, yeah. It’s Sears Han.
W: And your address and telephone number?
    M: It’s 1340 South 16th Street, and the phone number is 3240-1870.
W: Okay. Let me repeat your order. A large pizza with mushrooms and green peppers, orange juice, and your free order of breadsticks. Sears Han at 1340 South 16th Street, 3240-1817. Is that correct?
M: Everything except for the phone number. It’s 1870, not 1817.
W: All right. Thank you for your order. It should arrive at your doorstep in 30 minutes or less, or you’ll receive a free small pizza with your next order.
    M: Great. Thanks.

Britain has announced that it will leave the European Union. 52% of voters in England, Wales, Scotland, and Northern Ireland wanted to leave, while 48% wanted to stay. Older residents wanted the country to return to the way it was generations ago, while younger people saw Britain as an important part of the global community and didn’t want to throw that away. At the beginning of the day yesterday, most experts believed that the “Remain” group was slightly ahead of the “Leave” group. World financial markets were up big before the votes were added up, another sign that everyone expected Britain to continue to be part of Europe. But the world woke up this morning with a huge surprise. No one is sure exactly what will happen now, as this is totally new. The British pound lost about 15% of its value in a few minutes, and stock markets around the world have given back between 3%-10% on a wild day of trading. Some people are worried that other countries like France or Italy might leave the European Union now, but most leaders think that is very unlikely.
