I remember the first time I got on a horse. When I was a little boy aged two, my mom agreed to let me take a short ride and that was it! From then on, I drove my parents crazy begging for a horse.
When I was four, I had mutism, in which children stop speaking in certain social situations. I went days, weeks, months without a sound at school. At most, I might quietly whisper to a friend. I suffered silently through school until I was ten when a psychologist (心理学家) had an idea. He asked me what I wanted more than anything else in the world. He explained I was going to be given a chance to work for that. And I was permitted to whisper the answer in my mother’s ear, “A horse.”
I was to get a pony, but I had to live up to my end of the bargain (讲价). I had a list of weekly tasks I had to finish. I had to answer the phone five times per week, something I had never done before. I had to say one word to my teacher at school and the list went on. For a child with mutism, saying one word to someone can be like climbing Mount Qomolangma. I did everything that was asked of me and the day came. His name was Sequoia, whom I fell in love with immediately. When I was in Sequoia’s presence, I forgot all about my problems and felt strong and secure.
I am a fully participating member of society these days. My horse and I made it through a master’s degree. I may have made it otherwise, but I’m not sure. I feel I owe my life to the horse and I try to give it back to him. He has given me the best gift I could ever imagine, my life.

    Five steps to better handwriting
Some kids love handwriting, but others hate when it’s time to put their pen to paper. Maybe they are worried about their handwriting. Are you one of them? 8 Here are five steps that really work!
    Get a great grasp
Try this — hold your pencil at the top and try to write your name. Pretty hard? But when you hold your pencil the correct way, writing is much easier. 9 Hold it in place with your thumb, and your index (食指) and middle fingers.
Let the lines be your guide
Lined paper is your friend! Those lines can help you create letters that are the right size and proportion (均衡). 10 Also be sure to fill up the lined space completely. Those capital letters should be from the bottom line to the top one.
    Slow down
If your writing is hard to read, try slowing down a little. If you rush, it’s hard to control where you stop and start your letters.
    Lower the pressure
11 That makes it harder to make the smooth lines. Try easing up and don’t hold the pencil too tightly.
    12
Lots of games require you to write or draw pictures. So even though it’s not schoolwork, you’re still using the skills you need to control your pen better.
    A. Play games
    B. Ask for more advice
    C. So “a” should be half the height of a capital “A”.
    D. You’ve been writing since you were a little kid.
    E. Some kids press down really hard when they write.
    F. The good news is that just about everyone can improve their handwriting.
    G. The best way to hold a pen or pencil is to let it rest next to the base of your thumb.

On my first round-the-world trip in 2006. I planned everything out in advance. I knew where I was going, staying, for how long, and how I would get there. And then half-way through I ditched the plan and went with the flow(随大溜). Over the years, how I plan my travel has changed. Now, I'm a last-minute planner and seldom travel with any plan.
Traveling without a plan gives you great flexibility (灵活性). Since nothing is booked far in advance, you can turn to something different when you change your mind or something better comes along. I changed my plans to meet a friend on an island in Thailand and stayed for a month. I wouldn't have had that experience if I had kept to my planned schedule.
However, most new travelers are the opposite- they overplan their trips. Their whole journey is scheduled. Two days here, three days there. I understand why people do that. When time is short, you want to see as much as possible. You don't want to waste a single second.
But in travel, less is more. Spending more time in one place allows you to get a better feel for the rhythm (节奏) of life. You can visit at a more relaxed pace (速度), see more than just the attractions, and open up your schedule to the happy accidents of travel.
When I first made my travel plan, I tried to include everything in it. Then I realized it was unrealistic, and revised my plan. I came up with a list of one or two things I want to see each day and spaced everything out. It's an important lesson to learn. I think the best trip plan is to work out the general path you want to take, book the first few nights of your trip, and let your travels unfold (展开) from there. This way you are never locked into a certain place if your feelings change.
    1. What does the underlined word "ditched" in paragraph 1 mean?

    A. Considered B. Discussed C. Dropped D. Prepared

    A. He lives an easy life. B. He enjoys traveling freely.
    C. He spends a lot of time traveling D. He prefers to follow others when traveling.
    3. What does the author suggest about traveling?
    A. Working out a simple travel plan. B. Avoiding booking in advance.
    C. Getting prepared for the unexpected things. D. Setting a goal before making a travel plan.
    4. What is the best title for the text?
    A. Traveling: A Race Against the Clock
    B. Why It Is Great to Travel Without a Plan
    C. Traveling: Play More, Pay Less
    D. Why I Enjoy Traveling Around

One day in March, seven years ago, during happy hours at a bar in my hometown of Fayetteville, Arkansas, I told my friends I was going to travel around the world in a year. What's more, I would do it without taking any flights or making a single advance booking of any kind. My decision drew mixed reactions from my friends. Some offered support and encouragement, while others were more doubtful.
Once I had said the words, there was no turning back. I set off on my adventure in December 2008 and I found travelling without using planes was not easy. Trying to travel around the world in 16 months (it took me a bit longer than the 12 months I planned) made it even harder. Even so, travelling overland was the most amazing way to truly understand the immensity(浩瀚无际) of our wonderful planet.
I took three overnight buses to travel 3,000 km through Argentina, from Ushuaia to the capital Buenos Aires. I would look out of the windows for hours on end at the completely unspoiled plains(未遭破坏的平原), as if humans never touched it.
It took seven days and nights on trains to get from Moscow to Beuing, each day spent staring out of the windows for hours as the Siberian plains swept by. Sometimes, I wouldn't see a village or a human being for 10 hours. Later in my journey, it took me 22 days to get from New Zealand through the Panama Canal and back to Philadelphia, to finish my round-the-world adventure.
It turned out that travelling with no advance booking was far less difficult than I had imagined. Pulling into a city on a bus with a backpack, looking in a guidebook for a few suggestions of accommodations and then finding an empty room was never much of a problem anywhere. It also kept me flexible (灵活) and open about all my travel plans, which is advice I give to everyone who asks ---- plan far less than you think you should.
    I. What can we infer from the text?
    A. The author got support from his friends and family.

    C. The author had prepared for the travel for seven years.

It's never too early to start thinking about your summer vacation. Here are tips on how to plan a summer vacation that's relaxing and cheap.
If your summer vacation window is wide open, why not consider skipping (跳过) July and August altogether? 1 However, if you’ re set on travelling during high season, you can still save by being flexible (灵活的). Flying out on a Tuesday instead of a Friday could save you a bit of money.
2 Portugal and Eastern Europe are much cheaper than France or the United Kingdom, while a trip to Southeast Asia could be more affordable than you might expect.
3 If you plan on flying to your destination, for example, it will be much easier to find seats on your preferred fights if you book in March than if you were to wait until the last minute. The same thing applies to hotels.
With so many places to see and things to do, planning a trip can be very tiring. 4 Seasoned tour companies take the stress out of travel so all you have to do is show up and enjoy yourself. More importantly, when you break down the costs of joining a guided tour vs booking everything on your own, you'll often find the tour saves lots of money.
5 Especially if you're flying on a cheap airline that does not include luggage(行李), this can be a huge cost saver. Once you're on the ground, if you don't have luggage weighing you down, it will be easier for you to walk a mile to your hotel than take a taxi.
    A. A tour is a good choice if you’re very tired.
    B. There are so many fun things to do in the summer.
    C. Don't forget about the destination you're considering.
    D. Decide how much you have to spend on your vacation.
    E. One of the smartest things you can do when traveling is pack light.
E It's always in your best interest to book your summer vacation early.
G It's better to travel in the spring or early fall when flights and hotels are cheaper.

From her lifeguard station at the end of the pool, Jessica noticed clouds forming in the sky. By the time she took a break at 2: 30, the wind was picking up and the sky was darkening. The pool manager announced (通知) over the loudspeaker that the pool was closing immediately, due to a weather warming. He asked everyone to head to the safety of home before the storm hit.
All of the swimmers had left by 3: 30 except for Jessica's neighbor, eight-year-old Zack Hill. Zack's mother had dropped him off at the pool while she went to work. She had planned to pick him up later, but the storm was coming fast. Jessica decided that she would drop Zack off on her way home. She taped a note for Mrs Hill on the door of the pool office and headed out.
The minute Jessica and Jack left the parking lot, it was clear that this was no ordinary storm. The wind was very strong. The storm clouds were dark, and the sky had turned a terrible green. The rain hit just as Jessica turned onto her street. Jessica said, "Zack, I'm going to take you to my house. We need to get inside right away, and your house is farther away than mine.”
She pressed the garage-door(车库门 )opener, but nothing happened. The electricity was out. The front door only a few feet away, but the wind was so strong that Jessica and Zack had to fight their way out of the car and into the house. Jessica held zack' s hand firmly(牢牢地). The door was heavy with the pressure(压力) of the wind. Finally, it opened, but it was blown out of Jessica’s hand and it hit the side of the house. The window broke into pieces. Jessica picked up Zack and threw the two of them inside; her only thought was to get to a safe place.

Prague is cracking! My sister was right. It really is one of Europe’s most popular tourist attractions, which has beautiful old buildings. So far, my favorite place is Prague Castle. I began learning playing the violin when nine, and the next year I began studying under Natalie Ghent, who was my teacher until I left high school.
Once, Mrs. Ghent held a concert(音乐会) for her students. I played near the end of it. After I played a while, I forgot the music. No matter how hard I tried, I couldn't think of it. So I had to stop and looked at the pianist's music. When the whole concert was over, I cried hiding in my overcoat.
Mrs. Ghent came to comfort(安慰) me. Then she told us about a coming concert, and she hoped I would go there with her. I remember that the concert was on my birthday in March. It was great, as Mischa Elman was going to perform(表演) at Carnegie Hall. My teacher decided to buy the best tickets as my birthday present.
Carnegie Hall is quite beautiful with all the lights on. I had never been in such a concert hall before, and was impressed by the size as well. I don't remember what Elman played. I only remember that his playing was beautiful. I have seen films of him in recent years, and have been attracted by his performance, but I don't remember the music he played that night. What I remember most is that Mrs. Ghent spoke to me in a low voice from time to time that he had forgotten something or played a wrong note, or had made some other kinds of mistakes.
When I teach students to play the violin now, I tell my students who are in dread of making mistakes that if they aren't going to make a mistake, they will never play beautiful music.

    A. there are no really great performers
    B. Mischa Elman is not a good performer
    C. even the best players make mistakes
    D. Mischa Elman's performance can't impress others

I am traveling home. It is bitterly cold and snowy, but the warm train is right on time. I feel pleasantly satisfied as I look out at the rush hour traffic on the motorway. I feel more satisfied as the smell of fresh coffee announces the arrival of the drinks service. Swiss friends often tell me, proudly, that their rail service is the best in the world, but recently, one experience has proved that the great Swiss love affair with their railway has turned a little sour.
It all began with the decision to end ticket sales on trains. One cold morning I arrived at my local station only to find that the ticket machine was broken. No matter, I thought, I have got a smart phone, and I hurriedly set about buying my ticket that way. This was not as easy as I had expected, busying myself between credit card and phone with freezing cold fingers, but, by the time I got on the train to Geneva I had an e-ticket and I proudly showed it to the conductor. Unfortunately she told me that my ticket was not valid(有效的). Several weeks later a letter arrived from Swiss railways together with a fine for 190 francs ($ 210).
The good people there tell me the formal payment for my ticket from my credit card company arrived four minutes after my train left the station. That means, they say, that I bought my ticket on the train — and that is strictly prohibited.
Swiss railways say their policy is designed to protect honest ticket-paying passengers, but a quick look at their balance sheet suggests something else. The company is making about $2 million a month from fines.
Although train travel is still popular, those seats do not feel as comfortable; the coffee does not smell quite so good — because Swiss railways have lost, for now anyway, something far more precious than $2 million a month: good relations with their customers.
    1. What can we learn from paragraph 1?
    A. The Swiss trains usually come late.
    B. Traffic on the motorway goes smoothly.
    C. The author hates traveling on the Swiss train.
    D. The author is generally pleased with the Swiss rail service.
    2. Why did the conductor say that the author’s e-ticket was invalid?
    A. It was purchased online. B. It was paid for after the train’s departure.
    C. It was purchased on a ticket machine. D. It was paid on a smart phone.
    3. What does the author want to show by telling the experience?
    A. The fine was unfair. B. The conductor was impolite.
    C. E-tickets are getting popular. D. Credit cards can be inconvenient.
    4. What does the author think of the new policy of Swiss railways?
    A. It attracts more people to travel by train. B. It makes the company lose a lot of money.
    C. It damages company-customer relations. D. It protects honest ticket-paying passengers.
    B
Nine years ago, a few days before Christmas, I was a director at a company in San Francisco, and I was called into a meeting that was already in progress. That meeting turned out to be my exit interview. I was 64 years old at the time. It wasn’t completely unexpected. I signed a pile of papers and left the company.
So, 40 plus years of employment was over. I had a good reputation and background. Retirement was not a choice for me. I wanted to do something. And then an idea came into my mind, born from my concern for our environment. I wanted to build my own business, designing and producing biodegradable(可生物降解的)packaging from waste. This is called clean technology, and it was really meaningful to me. It could help reduce billions of pounds of single-use plastic packaging wasted each year.
Five years later, I’m delighted and proud to share with you that our income has doubled every year and we have no debt. Meanwhile, I have a wonderful partner, and we’ve won more than 20 awards for the work that we’ve done.
And I am doing the most rewarding and meaningful work of my life right now. But what I really long for is to find other first-time entrepreneurs(企业家)who are my age. I want to connect with them.
So I want to do something about that in a few years. I want us to start talking more about people who don’t become entrepreneurs until they are seniors. And then connecting all of them across industries, regions and countries—building a community.
    1. What happened to the author nine years ago?
    A. He retired from his former company. B. He failed an interview.
    C. He had a good family background. D. He changed his job to a better one.
    2. Why was the new business meaningful to the author?
    A. It was beneficial to the environment. B. It developed a clean technology.
    C. It provided jobs for lots of people. D. It brought in quite a lot of money.
    3. What is the author’s attitude to the development of his own company?
    A. Cautious. B. Disappointed. C. Ambiguous. D. Positive.
    4. What does the author plan to do in the future?
    A. To do something else about environment.
    B. To help people who want to become successful.
    C. To meet more people from different backgrounds.
    D. To build a community for senior entrepreneurs.

Since the 1980s eco-tourism has grown and grown. It is the fastest growing type of tourism.
If done well, eco-tourism has several advantages. It is kinder to the environment. 1 .This means that more natural habitat is protected and that the resources for building come from sustainable (可持续的) sources.Another advantage is that people in the developed world through eco-tourism get to experience places of great natural importance as well as communicating with local people. 2 .
However, there are some disadvantages of eco-tourism. It is felt by some environmentalists that any human activity will cause disorder in the routine of animals. 3 .
Another problem for local people is that they are expected to pose for cameras and dance etc. for money. 4 .The tourists are destroying the culture that they are paying to protect.
Eco-tourism tries to go to the places far away from other communities. 5 .There is nothing stopping people taking money from tourists as well as doing environmentally unfriendly activities.
It seems that the disadvantages often outweigh the advantages of eco-tourism. It might be better to take pictures of animals rather than kill animals, but given the choice the animals would sooner not have people around. It seems whether eco-tourism should be allowed should be judged case-by-case, and that the local people must be considered.
    A. These places are often not well policed.
    B. People walking through the forest may do much harm.
    C. And these activities will also damage the eco-system.
    D. It seldom ends people to untouched parts of the world.
    E. This is good for both parties: they both can better understand each other.
    F. And it encourages developers to consider the natural environment more.
    G. It discourages the local people from pursuing their traditional life styles.

A small school in rural India is gaining attention over the fact that all 300 students are ambidextrous(左右手都灵巧的). Data shows that only one percent of the global population is ambidextrous, but the ambitious founder of Veena Vandini School, in Madhya Pradesh, is aiming to change that, starting at a local level.
A former soldier and Veena Vandini School founder VP Sharma stated that he was inspired to focus on ambidexterity training by India’s first president Rajendra Prasad who was in office from 1950 to 1962. Unexpectedly, the president was ambidextrous. “I read in a magazine that Dr. Rajendra Prasad, India’s first president, used to write with both hands. This inspired me to give it a try, ” Mr. Sharma said. “Later when I launched my school at my native village, I tried training the students. ”
“We begin training students from standard Ⅰ and by the time they reach standard Ⅲ, they are comfortable writing with both the hands,” Sharma added. “Students of up to standard Ⅶ can write with speed and accuracy. Further, they can write two scripts at the same time, one with each hand. Students also know several languages, including Urdu. ”
Every 45-minute class at Veena Vandini includes 15 minutes devoted to handwriting practice, ensuring that every student develops the ability to write with both hands. VP Sharma also believes that the skill better enables students to learn multiple languages, and has them practice writing the same words in different languages at the same time. Although it is widely believed to help increase concentration, more recent studies have found that this is false and studying to become ambidextrous can, in fact, harm cognitive development.
A Scientific American study revealed that ambidextrous children performed worse than left- or right-handers on a range of skills, especially in math, memory, and logical reasoning. A study in northern Finland indicated that children who are ambidextrous are much likelier to develop mental health issues, including ADHD, language problems, and academic problems.
    1. What is special about Veena Vandini School?
    A. It only accepts 300 students yearly.
B It was set up by India’s first president.

    2. In which standard can students write quickly and accurately?
    A. Standard Ⅲ. B. Standard Ⅳ.
    C. Standard Ⅵ. D. Standard Ⅶ.
    3. What might most people think of the skill promoted by VP Sharma?
    A. It helps students fix their attention.
    B. It does harm to students’ creativity.
    C. It increases students’ academic stress.
    D. It inspires students to learn more languages.
    4. What do the two studies suggest in the last paragraph?
    A. Kids are reluctant to write with both hands.
    B. Kids shouldn’t learn to write with both hands.
    C. Kids who are ambidextrous always fail in the math test.
    D. Kids who are ambidextrous often have serious mental illness

One day after school, Tatenda arrived home tired and noticed something unusual in the house. “At first, I thought Dad had bought a television set, but when my mother said it was a computer, I was disappointed,” Tatenda said. “Nobody in our neighborhood knew how to operate a computer.”
For almost two weeks, the gift lay untouched in the house. But things changed when Amina, a young family friend came to visit. Amina knew all about computers and was a good teacher, too.
At first, Tatenda always pressed the wrong button. But he kept on going because he was eager to learn. After three weeks, Tatenda mastered some computer basics.
Meanwhile, Tatenda’s friends wondered what had happened to him, because Tatenda always had an excuse for going back home.
One day, Tatenda’s three friends surprised him at home. When they arrived, they couldn’t believe what they saw—a computer and Tatenda operating it.
After that surprise visit, Tatenda taught them how to use the computer. It wasn’t long before the neighborhood kids wanted to learn, too! Tatenda worried. The computer began to experience problems because the kids were pressing too many buttons. So he began charging for lessons. But those whose parents did not have money paid with chickens or goats.
With the money earned from teaching, Tatenda has bought a television and radio for his family. And he plans to buy a computer. He also plans to keep on teaching. The people of Sanyati couldn’t be more pleased. Tatenda has single-handedly introduced computers to his town and is simply known there as “Teacher”.
