Our city is in the center of China. There are a lot of places of interest around it. Millions of visitors come to our city every year. There are plenty of foreigners among them. Five years ago, a new modern airport was built in the northwest of the city. It's about fifty kilometers away and it takes the passers about 40 minutes by car to get there from our city. It's much larger than the old one. The waiting building can hold at least 900 people. Hundreds of airplanes take off and some of them fly abroad. It's much safer now than before. Fewer accidents have happened and more and more people travel by plane.

“Excuse me,” said a young man, standing shyly at the open church door. “I am here to pick up an Easter basket for my daughter. Am I in the right place?” “Well, we have baskets, but they are not Easter baskets for kids; they're food baskets,” I explained.
That morning I arrived at St. Michael's Church in Carmichael, California to help give the baskets to needy families for Easter. To make sure every family would receive one, we had handed out numbers to them that matched the basket they were supposed to receive. Each one contained a whole ham, potatoes, bread, vegetables, and a pie — enough food to help feed a family for a week.
“Why don't you come in?” I said to the man. He looked disappointed. He shook his head and said, “I can't ... My daughter is waiting for me over there. I am grateful for the food, but when I heard you were giving away baskets for Easter .... Well, I thought they would be Easter baskets for children.” He continued, “I promised my daughter one, and I wanted to surprise her.”
I felt bad, but there was nothing I could do. The man handed me his number, and I walked over to the baskets. A bulge in one of the baskets caught my eye. “What is that?” I wondered. Leaning over and looking more closely, I could see, unmistakably, an Easter basket — filled with candy, chocolate, and Easter eggs. One of the volunteers must have added it by mistake! I thought. Then I looked at the man's number in my hand. Well, he'll be ...

The tea gardens in Sri Lanka are actually large estates (种植园). The best tea usually comes from plants grown on high grounds, the cool hilltops with rows and rows of tea plants. The plants are about one metre apart. The plant is often pruned so that it remains only 60 to 90 centimetres high. Pruning is important because it encourages the growth of tender shoots,or young leaves. It is from these shoots that the best tea is got.
Practically all the tea pickers are women. The estates prefer to employ women pickers because they are more careful. Their thin fingers can easily remove the twin leaves and new shoots from the plants, which are the parts used for processing (加工) tea. The pickers carry large baskets into which they throw their pickings. A skilled worker can harvest between 9 to 14 kilogrammes of tea leaves a day. Usually new shoots can be picked from the plants about every ten or fifteen days.
Processing tea shoots into the familiar dry tea leaves requires great care and skill. There are various methods of processing depending on the type of tea required. For black tea, the young green leaves are first spread out on shelves to dry. This process removes much of their water and the leaves become soft. After this, the leaves are passed through heavy rollers. This operation will press the leaves for juices which give the tea both colour and taste.
Then the leaves are spread out on floors and left to ferment (发酵) under wet conditions. Fermentation develops the dried leaves with a hotair blower until they become rolledup black leaves. The final step is to sort and grade them before the black tea is ready for sale to countries all over the world.

Imagine that you live on a street where there are broken windows, graffiti painted on buildings, and waste on the ground. Would this environment lead to other acts of property damage or crime?
European researchers say the answer is yes. The researchers say they found strong evidence that shows disorder can lead people to carrying out criminal acts or bad behavior. The researchers work at the University of Groningen in the Netherlands. They reported their findings in Science Magazine last November. Their report is called The Spreading of Disorder.
The idea of observing disorder has an effect on people's behavior is not new. In 1982, American researchers James Wilson and George Kelling wrote a report describing what they called the broken windows theory. They believed that signs of crime, such as broken windows in a building, led to other acts of crime.
In the 1990s, New York City officials started a campaign to remove signs of disorder like broken windows, graffiti markings, and rubbish. Soon, the rate of minor crimes in New York began to drop. Other cities around the world also began to use this crimefighting method.
But the broken windows theory was also questioned. Experts said there was still no experimental evidence to prove that the drop in crime was a direct result of efforts to clean up city neighborhoods.
They said other influences could also have caused the drop in crime. Moreover, the broken windows theory did not fully examine the exact conditions of disorders that appeared to lead to crime.
The study from the Netherlands now provides the experimental information to support the broken windows theory.

The weather is very important to farmers. The calendar might say“August”, but the weather's more like October. For some farmers the cool weather is a good thing. For others, it's a cause for concern.
At Apple Hill, the cooler weather was giving the Boeger Winery a chance to concentrate on bottling instead of picking. “Things were really maturing,it has just been a welcome relief to have more time to prepare,”said Greg Boeger of Boeger Winery.
But down in the Delta, the earlier hot weather has them two weeks ahead of schedule. Their harvest actually started on Tuesday, and this cooling trend is a worry. There have been no problems yet, but for each of the last two years heavy rain right after Labor Day was a problem, one that Don Pylman would not like to see repeated.
“If it doesn't start raining, we're in good shape,” said Pylman. “If the sun comes out and clears up we can get right back to work, but if we do get rain, the rots will start.”
The kind of grape (葡萄) makes a difference as well. Thinskinned grapes like the chardonnay variety are much more sensitive to rain than some of the others. They're also more difficult to dry off.
    33. The weather change ________.
    A. shows that the calendar lacks science
    B. does good to farmers
    C. shows that the globe is more and more warming
    D. doesn't always make farmers worried
    34. From the second paragraph we know the Boeger Winery ________.
    A. isn't prepared for the weather change
    B. has his wine bottled earlier than usual
    C. has no chance to pick the grape
    D. in fact, doesn't welcome the weather change
    35. The underlined “them” in the third paragraph refers to “________”.
    A. the grapes
    B. the family of Winery
    C. the farmers at Apple Hill
    D. the farmers in the Delta

on the way“在路上”;on duty“值班”。没有on one's work的用法。
Sure enough“的的确确”。
54.A 由后面的a worn shirt, and a black baseball cap可知应该用穿着。dressed in sth.

61.have come It is the first time that sb. has done sth.
    65.saw the other day表示“不久前的一天”,故使用一般过去时。

Today, more and more high school students have his own blog on the Internet. For one thing, it can provide colorful platform to show their talents, and for another, it is also a way to release their pressure. And this make it popular with high school students. But many parents and teachers hold a same view, think that managing a blog will be a waste of time and energy, while this should be used for study which is their main duty. Personal speaking, I do approve of this activity. Open and organizing an eyecatching blog needs various ability such as writing, designing and so on. Only if that we have those abilities can we make a good blog. But also, we can improve ourselves during the procedure of organizing our blogs.

First, prepare a box which is about 20cm by 20cm. Second, put some soil in the box. Then sow the tomato seed carefully in the soil and cover it with more soil. If you want to have a good harvest, you'll have to look after it carefully. You have to water the seed every day and keep the box in the shade. When the seed begins to grow, you'd better tie the little plant to a stick and put it under the sun. Keep on watering it every day. Can you guess what you should do next? Waiting for your harvest.
