In Nrth America, e-bks have grwn in ppularity-it's nt the same in Iceland. One bkstre manager tld NPR, "In Iceland, yu give paper bks instead f e-bks as gifts." The bk industry is driven by the majrity f peple buying several bks each year, rather than the Nrth American pattern f a few peple buying a lt f bks.
When I asked an Icelandic friend what she thught f this traditin, she was surprised. "I hadn't thught f this as a special Icelandic traditin. It's true that a bk is always cnsidered as a nice gift. We're very prud f ur authrs," said she.
It sunds like a wnderful traditin, perfect fr a winter evening. I'll include it int my wn family's celebratin f Christmas. I dubt my lyalty(忠诚)t paper bks will ever fade; they are what I can't resist cllecting, in rder t read and re-read them, t beautify and persnalize my hme, t pass them n t friends and family as needed. Cmbining my lve fr bks with quiet and relaxing Christmas Eves sunds like a perfect match.
    24. Why d many Icelanders buy bks between September and December?

    C. Peple's lve fr bks seems t fade. D. A few peple buy mst f the new bks.

    A. It cmes as a surprise. B. It prves less ppular.
    C. It is rather unique. D. It is quite rdinary.
    27. What is the last paragraph intended t shw?
    A. The authr's family traditin n Christmas. B. The reasn fr the authr's interest in reading.
    C. The influence f the traditin n the authr. D. The wide spread f the wnderful traditin.

Even thugh we may believe that it's imprtant t say thank yu, smetimes expressing gratitude is easier said than dne. We might find urselves getting hung up n the best way t deliver the message.
Hwever, it's pssible that we might be making ur thanks mre cmplex. In a paper, researchers cmpared the effects f expressing thanks in persn, ver a vide call, and ver text. And, while peple generally expect an in-persn thank-yu t be the mst effective, what happened in reality was quite different: Sending a thank-yu ver text was almst as effective as that. The researchers fund that peple wh expressed gratitude gained increased happiness, with nly a few differences fr the different methds f gratitude expressin. Overall, vide calls were just as beneficial as meeting in persn. Texting was slightly less effective than vide calling-it didn't make peple feel mre cnnected and happier, while vide calling did. Hwever, participants wh sent their thanks ver text still experienced benefits: Texting imprved their well-being and reduced their lneliness.
Overall, hwever, the message is that we shuldn't wrry abut finding just the "best" way t express ur gratitude. In fact, yu're better ff sending a quick thank-yu shrtly after yu receive the kindness than waiting fr an ccasin t schedule an in-persn visit. Dn't put it ff just fr finding the best way-many times ur gratitude ges unsaid because we spend t much time n the details.

Five years ag, French navy fficer Jerme Chardn was listening t a radi prgram abut the jurney f the bar-tailed gdwit, a bird that migrates 14, 000 kilmeters between New Zealand and Alaska. Chardn understd hw treacherus the jurney wuld be, as heavy strms frequently hit Pacific island cmmunities. Yet, smehw, bar-tailed gdwits rutinely pass thrugh the area uninjured. Chardn wndered whether learning hw birds traveled culd help castal cmmunities avid natural disasters.
This past January, a team frm France's Natinal Museum f Natural Histry(NMNH)began experiments designed t test Chardn's idea. Researchers with a prject led by Frederic Jiguet frm NMNH equipped 56 birds f five species with cutting-edge animal tracking technlgy. The team members were ferried t remte islands in French Plynesia, where they attached tags(标签)using tracking technlgy. These tags sent the birds' lcatins t the Internatinal Space Statin, which bunced the data back t scientists n Earth wh culd then fllw the birds-waiting t see hw the birds respnded t natural disasters.
The prject is fcusing n birds' ability t hear infrasund, the lw-frequency sund humans cannt hear but that the researchers believe is the mst likely signal birds wuld use t sense strms and tsunamis(海啸). In a 2014 study, scientists tracking a kind f glden-winged birds in the central and sutheastern America fund that the birds flew up t 1, 500 kilmeters t escape frm an utbreak f trnades(龙卷风)that killed 35 peple. The birds fled at least 24 hurs befre any extreme weather hit, leaving the scientists t believe that they had heard the strm system frm mre than 400 kilmeters away.
The team plans n tagging hundreds mre birds acrss the Pacific t prepare fr a ptential tsunami. "I think if there's ne wave that spreads acrss islands, we can get data frm different species at different lcatins," says Jiguet. "That will say it's wrth cntinuing t tag and t develp lcal systems t better analyze this. There are chances that we will develp a bird-based tsunami early warning system."
    32. Which f the fllwing best explains the wrd "treacherus" underlined in paragraph 1?
    A. Strange. B. Bring. C. Frequent. D. Dangerus.
    33. What is the functin f the tags?
    A. Tracking natural disasters. B. Distinguishing bird species.
    C. Guiding researchers t islands. D. Reprting the birds' lcatins.
    34. Why is the 2014 study mentined in paragraph 3?
    A. T prve an assumptin. B. T clarify a cncept.
    C. T present a new tpic. D. T make cmparisns.
    35. What might be the best title fr the text?
    A. Hw Can Birds Avid Natural Disasters? B. Can Birds Warn Us f Natural Disasters?
    C. Hw Des a Warning System Functin? D. Can Birds Play a Rle in Human Research?
