Getting rid of dirt, in the opinion of most people, is a good thing. However, there is nothing fixed about attitudes to dirt.
In the early 16th century, people thought that dirt on the skin was a means to block out disease, as medical opinion had it that washing off dirt with hot water could open up the skin and let ills in. A particular danger was thought to lie in public baths. By 1538, the French king had closed the bath houses in his kingdom. So did the king of England in 1546. Thus began a long time when the rich and the poor in Europe lived with dirt in a friendly way. Henry IV, King of France, was famously dirty. Upon learning that a nobleman had taken a bath, the king ordered that, to avoid the attack of disease, the nobleman should not go out.
Though the belief in the merit (好处) of dirt was long-lived, dirt has no longer been regarded as a nice neighbor ever since the 18 century. Scientifically speaking, cleaning away dirt is good to health. Clean water supply and hand washing are practical means of preventing disease. Yet, it seems that standards of cleanliness have moved beyond science since World War II. Advertisements repeatedly sell the idea: clothes need to be whiter than white, cloths ever softer, surfaces to shine. Has the hate for dirt, however, gone too far?

The Internet is an amazing information resource. Students, teachers, and researchers use it as __31_  investigative tool. Journalists use it to find information for stories. People all over the world use it to connect with individuals from  _33  countries and cultures. Cheating is on the rise in US schools. In a recent survey of high school students in the United States, 74 percent admitted that they had cheated, or helped someone else cheat on a test. Students place the blame for this phenomenon(现象)on society. Consider the view of this high school junior from Massachusetts, “To be successful in the world today must cut corners, cheat. Everybody cheats. Just not everybody gets caught.”The other students’ view is even more telling,“In the real world, people cheat all of the time. And when you are in a competitive environment, you do what it takes to win, whether it be cheating or whatever”. While students have cheated for generations, the ease with which they are able to justify(证明)their behavior by blaming it on others is a more recent and worrisome phenomenon. Of course, many of these attitudes are not new. What is worrisome is that students see education as a hurdle(障碍)that needs to be crossed to get to the next level, whether that’s earning a diploma(文凭),gaining admission to college or getting a job interview. But the future is not all hopeless. In high schools, an increasing number of students and faculty(老师)are taking action. Students who are willing to work hard and be honest are becoming frustrated(受挫的)with the lack of response to high level of cheating. So are teachers who truly care about what their students learn. In others, someone has heard about the successful efforts of another school.

Crying marriage?  31   (surprise), isn’t it? Factually, the custom of crying marriage existed a long time ago in many areas of Southwest China’s Sichuan Province, and   32  (remain) in fashion   33   the end of the Qing Dynasty. Though not so popular as before, the custom is still observed by people in many places, especially Tujia people, who view it as a   34   (necessary) to marriage procedure.
It is very much   35   same in different places of the province. According to elderly people, every bride had to cry at the wedding.   36  , the bride’s neighbors would look down upon   37   as a poorly cultivated girl and she would become the laughingstock of the village. In fact, there were cases   38  which the bride was beaten by her mother for not crying at the wedding ceremony.
In a word, crying at wedding is a   39   by custom to set off the happiness of the wedding through falsely sorrowful words. However, in the   40   (arrange) marriages of the old days of China, there were indeed quite a lot of brides who cried over their unsatisfactory marriage and even their miserable life.

As I got into a taxi one afternoon, the driver was very angry about something that had happened to him earlier that day. Here’s how he told the story:
“One of my fares (旅客) left a wallet in my cab this morning. Nearly three hundred dollars in it. I spent more than an hour trying to trace the guy. Finally I found him at his hotel. He took the wallet without a word and glared at me as though I’d meant to steal it.”
“He didn’t give you a reward?” I asked.
“Not a cent. But it wasn’t the money I wanted,” he fumbled, then exploded, “If the guy had only said something…”
Why was the driver so upset? All he wanted was something simple, but even more valuable than money: to be thanked for his efforts. In short, what he wanted, what he needed but did not get, was a little bit of gratitude.

At one point along an open highway, I came to a crossroads with a traffic light. I was alone on the road by now, but    31   I drove up to the light, it turned red, and I braked to a halt. I look left, right, and behind me. Nothing.   32   a car, no suggestion of headlights, but there I sat,   33  (wait) the light to change, the only human being for at least a mile in any direction.
I started wondering   34   I refused to run the light. I was not afraid of   35   (catch) by the police, because there was obviously no cop anywhere around and   36   certainly would have been no danger in going   37   it. Much later that night, the   38   question of why I’d stopped for that light came   39   to me. I think I stopped because it’s part of a contract (合同) we all have with each other. It’s not only the law, but it’s an agreement we have, and we trust each other to honor   40   : we don’t go through red lights. Like most of us, I’m more ready to be stopped from doing something bad by the social agreement that disapproves of it than by any law against it.

Is there a way to turn back the clock on your age? A new study says yes. Exercise can make you younger. At least it can lower your fitness age — that is the measure of how well your body works. A study of athletes in the National Senior Games found that their fitness age was more than 20 years younger than their chronological age. The games took place in the Midwestern state of Minnesota. Tony Diamond participated in the games. Every morning he goes to a local park and walks fast for an hour. Then, the retired navy captain runs for an hour. Two or three times a week, he goes to a gym for muscle training. Mr. Diamond won three medals at the 2015 National Senior Games, in the road race and the race walk for his age group -- 85 to 89. "My current age is 86 years old, and my fitness age is 44. "I think I have such a good number because I did a lot of exercise during my life. I have been exercising since I was a little boy." Helen White is a basketball player. She also teaches the sport to senior groups. And she plays pickleball. Pickleball uses a raquet and is part badminton, tennis and table tennis. She won a silver medal in pickleball at the 2013 National Senior Games. "I'm 62 years old and my fitness results showed that I was 32 years." Ms. White and Mr. Diamond are some of the 5,000 Senior Games participants who took part in the fitness age study.

Nowadays, millions   31   lonely singles are now going online instead.   32   World Wide Web is quickly becoming the world’s most popular matchmaker(媒人).
Singles are flocking(涌向) to the Internet   33   (main) because their busy lifestyles leave them little time to look for a significant other. Using dating sites(约会网址) is quick and convenient. Many singles say the regular dating scene    34  (just lead) them from one bad experience to   35   and are ready to try something else. Dating sites also make    36   easy to avoid someone   37   you are not interested in. In the real world,   38  , ignoring someone you don’t like can be difficult.
Despite all the advantages, online dating also presents its own set of problems. People aren’t always those who they declare to be in their online   39  (describe). Safety is another concern. You are just   40  (like) to find a criminal online as you are Mr. Or Miss Right.

Every afternoon hundreds of thousands of youths flood Internet cafes, switch on game consoles (游戏机), or otherwise sit down to involve themselves in intense fantasy worlds. I’m talking about video games; games like Counter Strike, Diablo, Smash Brothers or Halo. These games can be fun and exciting but we need to watch out when this pastime becomes an addiction.
Games are often exciting and dramatic, but they generally aren’t very intellectual. We don’t learn as much from them as we would simply reading a book and spending too much time playing then can take away from our study time. We need to remember that we re students first and foremost. Nothing should ever get in the way of proper studying.
Video games can also be a bad influence on younger children who may be watching. Many video games are violent and the object in most of them is to kill the other player(s). This does not send the right message to the children who need to be told that violence is not acceptable and need to be taught how to handle situations maturely(成熟的). Even if we do decide to sit down and play a violent video game, we need to make sure that it is not influencing the younger children around us

The polar bears’ world is melting. Studies show that the polar ice has reduced by 9.8% every 10 years   35   1978. Now about 20,000 to 25,000 polar bears live in the Arctic. Polar bears depend on the sea ice for their   36   (survive). “The sea ice is more than just this platform that the bears walk over,” says Andrew Derocher,   37   scientist who studies North American polar bear populations. “  38   it, they can’t exist.”
Some melting and refreezing of the polar ice is natural.   39    in a warmer world, these cycles speed up, and bears have less time to hunt. Normally, they have three months in the spring when they gain more weight. The extra fat is used later,    40   the bears are not actively hunting.

The Japanese pay much attention to the luck of telephone numbers. For the bathhouse , for example , they like to use 4626 , because when read in Japanese , it has the same pronunciation as“have a good bath”.For the clothes shops and butcher’s , they like 4129 better than any other number because this number can either be read as“good dress” or“good meat”.Since these numbers are connected with something nice , people can remember them very easily. So they have become advertisements for the shops. On the other hand , there are also telephone numbers which are regarded as forbidden by the Japanese people.1564 , for example , has the sound of“kill people” while the number 4219 has that of“people die”.
At present there are about forty - four million telephones in Japan , yet it is almost impossible for everyone to get a lucky telephone number. So these numbers have become commodities and can be sold as goods. The price can reach as high as 222 thousand Japanese yen (日元).

     b. 概要写作: 阅读下面短文,根据其内容写一篇60词左右的内容概要。
An average adult breathes more than 3,000 gallons of air every day. Children breathe even more. Air pollution is more harmful to the children than to the adults. Air pollution can cause breathing problems, disorders(紊乱) in the nervous system and an increased risk of cancer later in life.
The American Lung Association explains why children are so affected by air pollution. Children are usually more active than adults. As a result, they breathe more rapidly and take more pollution deep into their lungs. Children also often breathe through their mouths, not through their noses. The mouth can’t filter(过滤) out pollutants as well as the nose. Finally, children usually spend an average of 50 percent more time outdoors than adults, especially in summer. Air pollution is the worst in summer.
In the past 30 years, programs to reduce air pollution in cities have made great progress. Most of the programs have centered on getting factories to reduce the pollution that they put into the air. New programs aim at reducing air pollution in children’s daily lives. A good example of this is a new kind of “No Smoking” law. Its goal is to reduce secondhand smoke—cigarette smoke in the air that others breathe in.
Experts say that secondhand smoke is just as dangerous outside as inside. Over 70 cities in the United States now prohibit(禁止) smoking in public places. Several cities rule that smokers have to pay 100 to 25o dollars for their smoking in any outdoor public area.
Some city officials are in favor of the new laws because they want to reduce the amount of secondhand smoke that children breathe. Others want to improve the environment in general. Most want both. A city health official in San Francisco, California, said “All of us that live in cities are exposing ourselves to poisonous matter”. I’m in favor of anything that cleans up our environment.

The man ran to his son, knocked him away, hammered the little boy's hands into pulp(果浆汁) as   33  (punish). When the father calmed down, he rushed his son to the hospital.

In a small village, the parents of a little boy were very depressed due to his bad temper(脾气). The boy used to get angry very easily and hurt others with his words. While he forgot what he spoke in anger, his friends and neighbours avoided him.
His mother and father tried many ways to make him give up his anger and develop kindness. Unfortunately, all their attempts failed. Finally, the boy’s father came up with an idea.
One day, his father gave him a huge bag of nails, asking him to hammer one nail to the fence every time he lost his temper. The little boy found it funny and accepted what his father had said.
His anger drove him to hammer 30 nails into the fence on the first day! Over the next few days, the little boy found it very difficult to hammer the nails into the fence and decided to control his temper.
Gradually, the number of nails hammered into the fence was reduced and the day arrived when he hammered none!
Now, his father told him to remove the nails every day as he had controlled his anger. Several days passed and the boy was able to pull out most of the nails from the fence.
The father appreciated him and asked him, pointing to one of the holes, “What do you see there?”
The boy replied, “A hole in the fence?”
He told the boy, “The nails were your bad temper and they were hammered into people. You can remove the nails but still see the holes in the fence. The fence never looks the same! It has scars all over! Your bad temper and anger were like that! Use words for good. Use them to show your heart!”

The food we eat seems to have a great effect on our health. Although science has made big steps in making food more fit to eat, it has, at the same time, made many foods unfit to eat. Some research has shown that perhaps eighty percent of human illness is related to food and forty percent of cancer is caused by food. This is not a new discovery. In 1945, some researchers realized that things commonly used to keep colors in meats and other food additives(添加剂) caused cancer.
Yet, these additives remain in our food, and it is difficult to know which things on the wrappings(包装) of foods are helpful or harmful. The additives which we eat are not all so direct.

Our perception(感知) of how food tastes is influenced by cutlery(餐具,刀具), research suggests. Size, weight, shape and color all have an effect on flavor, says a University of Oxford team. Cheese tastes saltier when eaten from a knife rather than a fork; while white spoons make yoghurt taste better, experiments show.
The study in the journal Flavour suggests the brain makes judgments on food even before it goes in the mouth More than 100 students took part in three experiments looking at the influence of weight, color and shape of cutlery on taste The researchers found that when the weight of the cutlery conformed to expectations, this had an effect on how the food tastes. For example, food tasted sweeter on the small spoons that are traditionally used to serve desserts.
Color contrast was also an important factor - white yoghurt eaten from a white spoon was rated sweeter than white yoghurt tasted on a black spoon.
"How we experience food is a multisensory experience involving taste, feel of the food in our mouths, smell, and the feasting of our eyes," said Prof Charles Spence and Dr Vanessa Harrar.
"Even before we put food into our mouths our brains have made a judgment about it, which affects our overall experience."
Past research has shown that crockery can our perception of food and drink. For example, people generally eat less when food is served on smaller plates.
The new research into how the brain influences food perceptions could help dieters or improve gastronomic experiences at restaurants, said Prof Spence.

Over the past few years, there has been a big increase in the number of people sharing information online. In this article, we will learn about some positive reasons for people to share information online.
94% of those surveyed by The New York Times said they put a lot of thought into how the content they are sharing will be beneficial to others. We often share information with our friends in the office or at home to educate, entertain, or pleasantly surprise them. This is also true while sharing information online. If you look at the Facebook wall posts of your friends, you will realize that most of their updates are usually famous quotes(引述), entertaining videos, humorous images, funny jokes, etc.
A lot of people share information online to picture their true self to the outside world. Some people, especially those who are shy and not comfortable talking about their areas of interest in the presence of others, find it extremely convenient to share that information online with others.
According to the study, 78% of the people said they shared information online because it helps them develop better relationships. Today, people are so busy that they do not have the time to meet each other personally. A lot of people now “meet” each other online, rather than in places like restaurants and pubs.
Lastly, when we share our thoughts online, we are actively communicating with a large number of people who are a part of the World Wide Web. Sharing information will affect the viewpoint of others, or add to their understanding about the world.

Works of literature can be written in a wide variety of forms. These different types or sorts of writing are known as genre (类型). We can classify literary works by what they have in common—their styles or what they are about, for example. On a simple level, organizing works of literature into genres helps us understand the variety of literary works.
Prose writing can be divided into two main types: fiction and non-fiction. Fiction includes stories that are made up by the author. They are not true in a factual sense but they may be based on scientific, historical or geographic facts. Within the broad area of fiction, we can distinguish two main types: realistic fiction and historical fiction.

Realistic fiction includes stories that are set in the contemporary world and are about people and events that could happen. Most best-sellers are of this style. Realistic fiction itself has many subdivisions (划分) such as crime fiction, adventure stories and romantic stories. Stories set in the past and based on historical facts are historical fiction. Some of the characters in the stories are imaginary, while others may be real people from the past. Much of this type of fiction centers on wars or political events.
Non-fiction books are based on facts and include genres such as biography, history, popular science and reference works such as dictionaries.

With global warming and melting ice, it isn’t easy being a polar bear anymore. Some studies have predicted that polar bears could die out by the end of the century. The good news is not all researchers think the bears are absolutely disappearing. Scientists at the American Museum of Natural History(AMNH) have published a new paper indicating that things might not be as bad for polar bears as some scientists expect.
To understand the reason for the researchers’ cautious optimism, we must first understand the factors that are threatening the polar bear’s existence. Polar bears consume a diet of mainly young seals. In order to hunt these seals, polar bears need to rest at the top of sea ice---the same ice that is increasingly melting for most of the year thanks to climate change. In another 50 years, experts expect that the Arctic will be too warm for sea ice to form for half of the year, leaving polar bears without a reliable food source and in serious danger of starvation.
As it turns out, alternative food sources for the polar bears aren’t completely out of the question. For as long as biologists have tailed after the animals, they’ve seen polar bears eating animals found on land like caribou(驯鹿) and snow geese---as well as the snow geese’s eggs.
Can polar bears actually survive off these alternative food sources for long periods of time? To figure this out, researchers calculated the nutrients that a caribou and snow geese diet would provide. They found that even adult male polar bears would be able to obtain more calories than they would burn in hunting these meals. Moreover, the food would provide the food necessary to avoid starvation during the summer months.
Unfortunately, not all polar bears have tended to seek food on land. That said, the researchers expect that necessity would push more polar bears to hunt on land to avoid starvation. They also expect that the bears could learn from their fellow bears how to hunt on land until the practice becomes second nature.

Computers have changed the way a business functions to a large extent. In the past, corporate houses rented spaces for running accounting departments. It took months together to figure out profit or loss that a business had made or suffered. However, computers have become the backbone of all businesses now. Today, computers are used beyond bookkeeping (记账) purposes too. Almost everything that happens in an organization is recorded, worked upon and evaluated with the help of computers.
Imagining our lives without computers is next to impossible. Computers were initially used only in workplaces. However, they soon became a household name, which revolutionized everything from school homework to grocery shopping. When the Internet came into being, it caused a great change in the way we functioned. Over a period of time, computers enabled working from home, which created a new type of employment. This gave usage of computers, within the confines(界限) of homes, a new part. As technology progressed, simple things such as shopping, booking tickets, buying a new house, searching for schools and colleges, researching for projects and medical information became a lot easier with entry of computers in every household.
As an indispensable tool in our lives, computers have changed the way we think in more ways than one. Today, all you have to do about finding answers is just “Google it”! The online world of blogging, instant messaging, chatting and social networking not only leaves virtual traces, but unites the world in a completely unimagined way. This powerful medium is the great mode of mass communication which affects our thinking by providing people with a platform to voice their opinions and begin discussions that have brought about a change in the world.
Computers have pushed us to see different worlds and experience different cultures. The revolution in Egypt is the latest example of how computers changed the world. Today the identity of information technology is computers. Invention of this machine has changed the world’s perspective about cultures, economics, history and current affairs. The advent (到来) of computers has no doubt brought a revolutionary change in our existence.

A typical picture at this time was full of religious symbols. 58 it was evident that ideas were changing when painters like Giotto di Bondone began to paint religious scenes in a more realistic way. During the Renaissance, People began to concentrate 59 (little) on religious themes and adopt a more humanistic attitude 60 life. They tried to paint people and nature as they really were. When I was small and my grandmother died, I couldn’t understand why I had no tears. But that night when my dad tried to cheer me up, my laugh turned into crying.

So it came as no surprise to learn that researchers believe crying and laughing come from the same part of the brain.Just as laughing has many health advantages, scientists are discovering that so, too, does crying.

Whatever it takes for us to reduce pressure is important to our emotional(情感的) health, and crying seems to work well. One study found that 85 % of women and 73% of men report feeling better after crying.

Besides, tears attract help from other people Researchers agree that when we cry, people around us become kinder and friendlier and they are more ready to provide support and comfort.Tears also enable us to understand our emotions better; sometimes we don’t even know we’re very sad until we cry.We learn about our emotions through crying, and then we can deal with them.

Just as crying can be healthy, not crying – holding back tears of anger, pain or suffering- can be bad for physical(身体的) health.Studies have shown that too much control of emotions can lead to high blood pressure, heart problems and some other illnesses. If you have a health problem, doctors will certainly not ask you to cry.But when you feel like crying, don’t fight it.It’s a natural – and healthy- emotional response(反应)。

Cheating has always been a part of school life. Research shows more and more students in America cheat in the exams. Students contribute the blame to society. In their opinion, many people have to cheat in order to succeed in the competitive society. What worries us more is that many students regard education as a hurdle. It is no wonder that so many students cheat. To our joy, many students and teachers are realizing the bad influence of cheating and are taking action to solve the problem.
In my opinion, it is wrong to cheat on exams. We, students, should be honest and try to get good marks by studying hard. I also think it wrong to blame cheating on society. Whether you will cheat or not is dependent on yourself not on others. However, how to stop cheating? I think there are two ways we can adopt. First, a severe punishment should be put into effect to prevent students from cheating. Second, great effort should be made to make students aware of what kind of person the society needs and try to improve their self-confidence. What’s more, we should improve our study methods and get well prepared for examinations.
