    读后续写一、
A farmer grew some vegetables in his garden. One day his wife was ill and he had no money. He had to sell some cabbages and carrots in the market. The next morning he took two baskets of vegetables to town. But it was raining hard that afternoon and there were few people in the street. When his vegetables were sold out, it was dark. He bought some medicine and hurried to his village.
On his way home he saw a person lying on the snow. He placed his baskets on the ground and was going to help the person to get up. At that time he found it was a dead man and there was much blood on his body. He was so afraid that he ran away quickly, without taking the baskets with him.
The next afternoon the farmer was sent to the police station. Having shown the baskets, an officer asked, “Are these yours” “Yes, sir.” the farmer answered timidly(胆怯地). “Have you killed the man” “No, no, sir.” the farmer said in a hurry. “When did you see the dead man” “About seven last evening.” “Did you see who killed the man” “No, sir.” The officer brought out a knife and asked, “Have you seen it yet” “No, sir.” The officer became angry and told the policemen to beat him up and sent him into prison. the officer wanted to trap the farmer into the confession(供认), but the farmer didn’t admit he was the murderer.

I was responding to a call from a small brick flat in a quiet part of town. I assumed I was being sent to pick up some party-goers,or someone who had just had a fight with a lover,or a worker heading to an early shift at some factory for the industrial part of town.
When I arrived at 2:30 a.m., the building was dark except for a single light in a ground floor window. Under such circumstances, many drivers just honk(按喇叭) once or twice, wait a minute, then drive away. But I had seen too many weak people who depended on taxis as their only means of transportation.
Unless a situation smelled of danger,I always went to the door.
This passenger might be someone who needs my assistance,I reasoned to myself. So I walked to the door and knocked. “Just a minute,” answered a frail, elderly voice. I could hear something being dragged across the floor. After a long pause, the door opened. A small woman in her 80s stood before me. She was wearing a print dress and a pillbox hat ,like somebody out of a 1940s movie. By her side was a small nylon suitcase.
The apartment looked as if no one had lived in it for years. All the furniture was covered with sheets. There were no clocks on the walls, no equipment on the counters. In the corner was a cardboard box filled with photos and glassware.
“Would you carry my bag out to the car?” she said. I took the suitcase to the cab, then returned to assist the woman. She took my arm,and we walked slowly toward the cab.
She kept thanking me for my kindness. “It's nothing,” I told her. “I just try to treat my passengers the way I would want my mother treated.”

My fiance (未婚夫) and I were excited about shopping for our first home. But our funds were limited, and none of the houses in our price range seemed satisfactory.
One agent recommended a house in particular. Although her description sounded wonderful, the price was beyond our range, so we declined. But she kept urging us to have a look at least.
We finally did and it was  love at first sight. It was Our Home, small and charming, overlooking a quiet lake. Walking through the rooms and talking with the owners, a nice elderly couple, we felt the warmth and happiness of the marriage within that home. As perfect as it was, the price remained too high for us. But every day, we would sit by the lake, looking at the house and dreaming of what it would be like to live there.
Days later, we made a(n) offer—far below the asking price. Surprisingly, they didn’t laugh at us. They renewed their offer instead. It was also much more than we could afford, but far less than the original asking price.
The next day, we got a disappointing message that another buyer had offered a much higher price. Even so, we decided to talk with the owners directly. We made our final offer, which still was thousands of dollars less than the other buyer’s bid. We knew it,  but we had to try. Nobody knew if we could get it.

On Christmas Eve when Jack came out of his office, a street urchin(顽童)was walking around the shining car. “Is this your car, sir?” he asked. Jack answered, “Yes, my brother gave it to me for Christmas.” The boy was surprised. “You mean your brother gave it to you and it did cost you nothing? Sir, I wish…”He hesitated(犹豫),Jack thought of course he knew what the boy wanted, but what the boy said surprised him greatly. “I wish,” the boy went on, “that I could be a brother like that.” Jack looked at the boy in surprise, and then he said again, “Would you like to take a ride in my car?” “Oh yes, I’d   love to ,”the boy answered.
After a short ride, the boy turned and with his eyes shining, said, “Sir, would you mind driving in front of my house?”

Twenty years ago, I drove a taxi for a living. One night I went to pick up a passenger at 2:30 a. m. When I arrived to collect, I found the building was dark except for a single light in a ground floor window.
I walked to the door and knocked, "Just a minute," answered a weak, elderly voice.

"Oh, you're such a good man." She said. When we got into the taxi, she gave me an address, and then asked, "Could you drive through downtown?"
"It's not the shortest way," I answered quickly.
"Oh, I'm in no hurry," she said. "I'm on my way to a hospice  (临终医院). I don't have any family left. The doctor says I don't have very long. "
I quietly reached over and shut off the meter (计价器). For the next two hours, we drove through the city. She showed me the building where she had once worked, the neighborhood where she had lived, and the furniture shop that had once been a ballroom where she had gone dancing as a girl.
Sometimes she'd ask me to slow down in front of a particular building and would sit staring into the darkness, saying nothing.
At dawn, she suddenly said, "I'm tired. Let's go now." We drove in silence Lo the address she had given me.
"How much do I owe you?" she asked.
        "Nothing." I said.
"You have to make a living," she answered. "Oh, there are other passengers," I answered. She said thanks to me, but she looked so sad.

    Paragraph 1
Almost without thinking, I bent and gave her a hug.

Many years ago, when I was fresh out of school and working in Denver, I was driving to my parents' home in Missouri for Christmas. I stopped at a gas station(加油站)about 50 miles from Oklahoma City, where I was planning to stop and visit a friend. While I was standing in line at the cash register(收款台), I said hello to an older couple who were also paying for gas.
I took off, but had gone only a few miles when black smoke poured from the back of my car. I stopped and wondered what I should do. A car pulled up behind me. It was the couple I had spoken to at the gas station. They said they would take me to my friend's .We chatted on the way into the city, and when I got out of the car, the husband gave me his business card.
I wrote him and his wife a thank-you note for helping me. Soon afterward, I received a Christmas present from them. Their note that came with it said that helping me had made their holidays meaningful.
Years later, I drove to a meeting in a nearby town in the morning. In late afternoon I returned to my car and found that I'd left the lights on all day, and the battery(电池)was dead. Then I noticed that the Friendly Ford dealership - a shop selling cars - was right next door. I walked over and found two salesmen in the showroom.

A funny thing happened to Arthur when he was on the way to work one day. As he walked along Park Avenue near the First National Bank, he heard the sound of someone trying to start a car. He tried again and again but couldn’t get the car moving. Arthur turned and looked inside at the face of a young man who looked worried. Arthur stopped and asked, “It looks like you’ve got a problem,” Arthur said.
“I’m afraid so. I’m in a big hurry and I can’t start my car.”
“Is there something I can do to help?” Arthur asked. The young man looked at the two suit cases in the back seat and then said, “Thanks. If you’re sure it wouldn’t be too much trouble, you could help me get these suitcases into a taxi.”
“No trouble at all. I’d be glad to help.”
The young man got out and took one of the suitcases from the back seat. After placing it on the ground, he turned to get the other one. Just as Arthur picked up the first suitcase and started walking, he heard the long loud noise of an alarm.
It was from the bank. There had been a robbery (抢劫)!
Park Avenue had been quiet a moment before. Now the air was filled with the sound of the alarm and the shouts of people running from all directions. Cars stopped and the passengers joined the crowd in front of the bank. People asked each other, “What happened?” But everyone had a different answer.
Arthur, still carrying the suitcase, turned to look at the bank and walked right into the young woman in front of him.
She looked at the suitcase and then at him. Arthur was surprised. “Why is she looking at me like that?” He thought. “The suitcase! She thinks I’m the bank thief!”
Arthur looked around at the crowd of people. He became frightened, and without another thought, he started to run.
    Paragraph 1:
As he was running, Arthur heard the young man shouting behind, “Stop, stop!”

My best friend Lisa and I carefully wrote our words with a No. 2 pencil. We took turns writing down the sentences. "Dear Miss Hanley," we wrote, "you like Kathleen better than you like us. That isn't fair." Miss Hanley was our fourth-grade teacher. She was in her 20s, with short, dark, curly hair and lively grey eyes. It was her first-year teaching in our public school in the northeast Bronx.
"You're a very talented writer," Miss Hanley often told me. This excited me. A few weeks into this school year, Lisa and I had co-authored a play based on our favorite novel, Little Women. And we performed the play in front of the class. When the curtain came down, the applause from the students was light. But Miss Hanley clapped strongly, saying,"Great! Great!" Lisa and I ignored the other kids, and were high on her praise for days.
I didn't envy Lisa's relationship with Miss Hanley. Sharing Miss Hanley was a bond between us. In Miss Hanley's class, we behaved ourselves, although we couldn't help comparing ourselves with Kathleen, whose demeanor(风度)and dress were perfect. Kathleen lived in her family's big house with a beautiful garden. Lisa and I lived in small apartments. Her eyes were as huge as those of most film stars. She spoke softly and politely. Her hair was waved, clean and tidy. My hair was loose and wild. Lisa and I wore clothes that didn't always match. I sometimes wore my sister's hand-me-downs. Kathleen did best in her studies and of course Miss Hanley liked her. The funny thing is that I didn't like Kathleen and neither did Lisa. In fact we didn't know why.
Lisa and I continued writing our note to Miss Hanley, "You call on Kathleen more than you call on us. You like her because she is a goody-goody(讨好卖乖的人).That's not fair! Just that we are not goody-goodies does not mean you should like us less."

I remember my first home was a small apartment on the second floor with a lovely and spacious balcony. When my mom was busy in the kitchen she let me stay on the balcony watching the kids playing in the street. On that balcony I played sometimes with my elder sister, Maria. She was seven years old and when my mom was absent she was like a mother to me. The balcony was a great hobby place for my father. After his work he used to grow carnations (康乃馨) in flower boxes. His carnations were red, pink and white, and everyone appreciated them for their beauty.
He took care of them with so much love and devotion. He dealt carefully with his flowers like a mother taking care of her baby. Many times I sat on the floor of the balcony for hours observing him and his lovely flowers with patience. He was always doing something on that balcony. He was watering them every day, cleaning the balcony floor, changing the potting soil and when the stems (茎) were thick, strong and high enough, he started his improvement operation like a doctor.
My dad took a tiny knife and with his left hand he held the stem of the carnation and measured the height. Then he made a small mark on the stem with his finger. Afterwards he made a sharp cut with the knife, just enough to fit in a grain of barley (插穗的芽). Then he bandaged the stem with a small bandage. His job was then to water the plants and to take care of them. “No one should touch them”, he said to mom. Every day, when he came home from work he went straight to the balcony.
Mom used to tell us: “Do not touch daddy’s flowers.” For us it was a fascinating experience to watch how the small stems were growing and making flowers. When the carnations had grown big enough, my dad enjoyed watching them every day. We the kids did too.

The worst tourist (旅行者) in the world may be Nicholas Scottie of San Francisco. Once he flew from the US. to his hometown in Italy. He had some troubles on his journey. The night before, he stayed up late to deal with some emails, so when he boarded on the plane he decided to have a sleep. Hours later, he was woken up by some noise and he found the plane had landed.
As he thought he had arrived home, Mr. Scottie got off the plane . He thought he was in Rome. However, the truth was that the plane made a one-hour stop to get oil at Kennedy Airport of New York.
Mr. Scottie waited at the airport for some while, but nobody was there to meet him, he thought maybe they were held up by heavy traffic which was very common in Rome. He decided to give his family a phone call. Unfortunately, he found he had left his cellphone at the hotel in San Francisco. Therefore, he decided to go home by himself. While he was walking in the city, Mr. Scottie found that the old “Rome” had changed a lot. Many old buildings were replaced by high modern ones. He also found that many people spoke English instead of Italian and that many street signs were written in English. What made him most surprised was that drivers’ awareness of traffic safety was improved and he hardly found any driver speeding on the road. All cars were driving in line. The condition was widely different from that in the past. He was feeling proud.
Mr. Scotti knew very little English, so he asked a policeman (in Italian) the way to the bus station . He happened to meet a policeman who was also born in Italy and answered him in the same language. Mr. Scotti thanked him, left, quickly found the bus station and got on a bus. He looked outside of the bus window.

He told us to consider the difference in the price “an early wedding present.” That’s how we found our home and how I learned that when people are kind they are not strangers, only friends we haven’t yet met.

He got out and ran up to the steps. Then in a short while Jack heard him coming back, but he was not coming fast. He was carrying his little crippled(残疾的)brother. He sat down on the step and pointed to the car.
“There he is, Buddy, just like I told you upstairs. His brother gave it to him for Christmas and it didn’t cost him a cent. And some day I’m going to give you one just like it…then you can see for yourself all the nice things in the Christmas windows that I’ve been trying to tell you about”
    Paragraph 2
Jack got out and lifted the boy to the front seat of his car. The shining-eyed elder brother climbed in beside him and the three began an unforgettable holiday ride., looking at all those beautiful things. That Christmas Eve ,Jack learned the real meaning of the words: “It’s more blessed to give than to receive.” He also learned what it means to be “an elder brother like that.”

Almost without thinking, I bent and gave her a hug. She held onto me tightly. Before the woman left , I said to her, “My mother treated everyone kindly, she is a great person, but she passed away years ago. you are like my mother,” the woman said, “ thank you. If you want to visit me, I’ll tell you my story.” Then the woman left. After a long pause, I drove the taxi to go home.
    Paragraph 2
The next day, I was on my way to visit her. The old woman told me that she used to be a millionaire. She became immersed in making money. She was the owner of a particular building we saw last night. But she neglected her family. her only son died one year ago because of cancer. She sold everything to save him, but failed. How sad! At last, the old woman said to me, “Life is short, but please be in no hurry. Though everyone has to earn money to make a living, always remember that family is the most important thing to you,” I said nothing but nodded hard.

I recognized him at once. the two salesmen were the older couple, and they were the owners of the Friendly Ford dealership. “ Hey, it’s you! you ever helped me, remember?” I said to them excitedly. Yeah, we do!” the old man laughed, we run the shop to help more people. you know, it makes our life so meaningful!”

    One possible version:
As he was running, Arthur heard the young man shouting behind, “Stop, stop!” And also at the moment, Arthur suddenly realized that the young man might be the bank robber. So Arthur didn’t stop, but continued to run until he saw a taxi. He stopped it, jumped in with the suitcase and said to the driver, “Go to the police station, please. The man shouting behind is the bank thief!’’ The taxi raced away like the wind.
The taxi stopped in front of the Police Station and Arthur told the police what had happened. Obviously, the police had already learned about the robbery. They opened the suitcase and there was a large sum of money inside, as Arthur had expected. Then the police asked Arthur to describe the young man and the other suitcase. Later, with the information, the police caught the robber. The police and the bank both thanked Arthur a lot. (Words 153)

    Another possible version:
As he was running, Arthur heard the young man shouting behind, “Stop, stop!”Thinking of the way the young man had behaved, he realized the young man might be the bank robber. So Arthur ran faster and stopped a taxi. The moment he got into the taxi, he told the driver the man shouting behind was the bank thief and asked him to drive to the nearest police station. The driver followed what Arthur said and drove away.
The taxi stopped in front of the Police Station and Arthur thanked the driver and directly went in. Just as Arthur was describing what had happened near the bank on the Park Avenue and reported the young man to the police, he heard a voice outside, “Help! Help!” To the surprise of Arthur, it was the young man. He had followed Arthur in another taxi. It turned out that the young man was innocent and inside the suitcases were just some clothes. Arthur felt embarrassed but the policemen thanked him anyway.(Words: 158)

My heart was pounding as we left the note before class on Miss Hanley's desk. We folded it in threes, so nobody else could see what was written. I was sure Miss Hanley was going to be very angry. It was a long and hard day. I regretted sending the note and was terrified of Miss Hanley's reaction. I couldn't concentrate in class, and kept sneaking glances at Lisa. She glanced back, looking equally upset.

At three o'clock, Miss Hanley asked us to stay after class "for a few minutes". Lisa and I stood before her desk. Fists clenched, I was unable to meet Miss Hanley's eyes. "Girls," Miss Hanley said gently, "I have no favorites in my classroom. Each kid is unique." Her voice was so kind. "You girls are very different from Kathleen. I'll tell you what I find wonderful about you—your senses of humor, your imaginations and your passion about life." My fists finally unclenched. There was room in Miss Hanley's heart for me! I didn't need to compete with anyone else. It was a far different message—a much happier one. It was a message that I immediately embraced and have never forgotten.

One day, my elder sister, who loved dad very much, had a great idea. She made a short cut of the carnations from their stems one by one and arranged them on the floor. She believed that dad would be pleased to see them that way. When mom realized what my sister had done, she became completely speechless. However my sister didn’t know why no one appreciated her efforts. The shock was too strong and we all waited for dad’s arrival with anxiety.
When my dad arrived, he went as usual, straight to the balcony and saw his flowers lying on the floor like dead animals. He was shocked at first. He looked toward the street to see if any neighborhood children had done it. Then he entered the living room and looked left and right and mom in silence. Finally mom looked at dad and with a nice tone she said: ”No outsider did this great job, only your lovely child Maria.” Hearing this, my dad’s face changed from tense to a smile and then he said: ”Do I have a better flower than my lovely daughter?” My elder sister smiled and hugged dad strongly.

After twelve hours' travelling round on a bus, Mr. Scottie thought to himself that Rome had changed so much that he even failed to find his home. The bus driver had to leave work and go home, so he handed Mr Scottie over to another policeman. Mr. Scottie asked the policeman, “Sir, could you tell me why the police employ so many people speaking English instead of Italian as policemen?” The policeman smiled and said, “I’m sorry to tell you that you are in New York, but not Rome now.” However, Mr. Scottie did not believe he was in New York when he was told so.
To get him on a plane back to San Francisco, he was sent to the airport in a police car with sirens (警报) on. The driver was speeding on the road and didn’t stop even when the red light shined. Seeing how the driver drove on the road, Mr. Scottie was certain that he was in Rome because people in Rome usually drove in that way. “Look,” said Mr. Scottie to the policeman sitting beside him, “I’m sure that I’m in Rome. That’s the way in which people drive.”
