    Unit 3 writing workshop: An event description

    After the class, the students should be able to:

               Grasp some key words, phrases and sentences in description of birthday party.

               Grasp the structure of descriptive essay by reading and writing;

               Know how to use linkers to show time order in group work;

               Cultivate the awareness of cooperation and the sense of belonging and commitment to the family and friends.

               Get ready for writing

               Lead in

    Let students recall the party we have held on 10th September, a students birthday party.

     

     

     

               1st Read for understanding

    Read the description of grandpas birthday party and answer two questions:

    1. What did the family do to prepare for the party?
    2. How did grandpa feel and what did he say?

    Pair work: discussion

    What details do students want to include in the party description?

     

     

     

    Individual work: read and answer the questions.

     

    To lead in the topic of celebration event and also focus on the content of description events

               2nd Read for focusing on the structure of descriptive writing

    Lead students read and summarize the main ideas and locate the specific information to support each paragraph.

     

    Group work:

    Read and complete the flow chart.

    Discuss the meaning of the birthday for this family.

    To deepen the understanding of the structure of event description and cultivate their awareness of cooperation as well as the meaning of the party for this family

               3rd Read for focusing on the language use

    Guide students to summarize the logic organization of description an event.

     

    Individual and pair work:

    Underline the words used to link sentences and paragraphs. 

    Students organize a story by time order.

     

    To understand the chronological order of description by finding the sentence linkers

               Practice

               Please write the outline of Sep. 10th birthday party we have held or the event they would like to mention.

               After that, please describe the preparation part of the event by using sentence linkers.

    Individual and pair work:

    Write one of the 4 paragraphs by themselves and then share with partners.

    To check whether they have understood the structure and the language in use of event description 

               Summarize the whole class and assign homework

    Students themselves share what they have learned.

    To review the whole class

    Based on the peer editing feedback, students need to finish the 2nd writing.
