When you come across a new word in your reading, before looking it up in a dictionary, very often you can guess its meaning from its context(words or sentences around the new word). There are often certain words in a sentence or paragraph that can help you decide the meaning of an unfamiliar word.

    Synonym clues

Synonyms are words that are similar in meaning to other words. A sentence with a difficult word often has a more familiar word to make it easy to understand. You may know some synonyms because they are set apart by commas, dashes, or parentheses. Usually, a synonym context clue appears to be of the same part of speech as the new word. For example:

The hullabaloo expresses people's high spirits at holiday time. Many years ago, however, the loud noises give the holiday a fresh start.

“Hullabaloo” is a noun in the sentence. The words that have the same meaning and part of speech is “loud noise.” So “loud noise” is a synonym context clue to “hullabaloo.”

    Antonym clues

Antonyms are words or phrases that have opposite meanings to other words or phrases. Certain words often give you an antonym clue of the new words. They can help you to understand new words. Words like “or ,” “but,” “while,” “as opposite to” and “on the other hand” often give you antonym clues. For example,

Linda manages money judiciously while I manage money unwisely.

The word “while” shows you the antonym “unwisely.” You can reason that “unwisely” is the opposite of “judiciously.” Thus, “judiciously” means “wisely.”

There are hundreds of funny and strange expressions in the English language. A lot of them include country names or nationalities. Take these examples:

The Dutch are the target of most English expressions about nationalities. Why are there so many jokes about the Dutch in English? And what do these expressions mean? In the 17th and early 18th centuries, there were three wars between the British and the Dutch, and Dutch became a bad word. So double Dutch means something that has no meaning or is impossible to understand. A Dutch uncle is someone who gives much stronger advice than they need to. There are later expressions, which are funnier and kinder, like to go Dutch, which is nowadays a popular expression. It means to pay for your part of a bill. This often happens when a group of friends have a meal together, and each person pays for the food they ate. I’m a Dutchman is another commonly used expression. This means not being able to believe something.

An expression with a similar meaning to double Dutch is it’s all Greek to me, which means I don’t understand. The expression was made famous in Shakespeare’s play Julius Caesar although the expression is actually hundreds of years older.

If you take French leave, you are not present or leave somewhere without permission. For example, you could take French leave from a classroom or the place where you work. This expression is from the 18th century when French people left parties without saying goodbye to the host or hostess.

There are Chinese whispers, which mean confused messages. This describes the fact that a message can often change as it is passed from person to person. This expression comes from the First World War when foreigners were often confused by Chinese language.

Many people find English expressions confusing, but now that you know about some of them, you can easily have fun finding out many more funny English expressions.

Mobile phones have become a problem for some middle schools. In a middle school in Australia, students are not allowed to carry mobile phones during school hours.

Mobile phone use among children has become a problem for the school this year. Several children have got mobile phones as Christmas gifts, and more students will want them.

Mary Bluett, an official, said mobile phone use is a distraction to students during school hours and it also gives teachers so much trouble in their classrooms. Teachers were also saying that sometimes students might use phone messages to cheat during exams.

She said some schools had tried to ban mobile phones. Some parents felt unhappy because they couldn't get in touch with their children.

Many teachers said students should not have mobile phones at school, but if there was a good reason, they could leave their phones at school office. They also said there were many reasons why the students should not have mobile phones at school; they were easy to lose and were a distraction from studies.

Many people say that they understand why parents would want their children to have phones, but they think schools should let the students know when they can use their mobile phones.

The cultures of the East and the West are really different from each other a lot. This is because the culture systems are two separate systems on the whole.

The origin of the eastern cultures is mainly from two countries: China and India. Both of the two cultures are started by rivers. In China, the mother river is the Yellow River while the Indian one is the Hindu River. These two cultures were developed for several thousand years and formed their own styles. Then in Dang Dynasty of China, the Chinese culture gradually went overseas to Japan, mixed into the Japanese society and shaped the Japanese culture nowadays. Though a bit different from the Chinese one, it belongs to the same system.

When the two mother rivers gave birth to the eastern culture, another famous culture was brought up on the Mesopotamian Plain the Mesopotamian Civilization. This civilization later on developed into the cultures of the Ancient Greece and Ancient Rome. And these two are well-known as the base of the European culture. Like the Chinese culture, the European one also crossed waters. When the colonists of England settled down in America, their culture went with them over the Atlantic Ocean. So the American culture doesn't distinguish from the European one a lot.

At the same time, the difference of the language systems adds to the cultural differences. In the East, most languages belong to the pictographic language (see the picture below) while the western languages are mostly based on the Latin system, for example, the one I’m using to write this paper.

Other factors like human race difference counts as well. But what’s more, due to the far distance and the steep areas between the East and West, the two cultures seldom communicate until recent centuries. So they grew up totally in their own ways with almost no interference from the other.

If you live in the United States, the law says you can't have a full-time job until you are 16 years old. At 14 or 15, you can work part-time after school or on weekends, and during summer vacation you can work 40 hours each week. Does all that mean that if you are younger than 14, you can't earn your own money? Of course not! Kids who are between the ages of 10 and 13 can earn money by doing lots of things.

Valerie, 11, told us that she made money by cleaning up other people's yards. Lena, 13, makes money by knitting dog sweaters and selling them to her neighbors, and Riesa said she had started taking art classes and showing her work to people. People have asked her to draw pictures for them and they pay her for them. Jasmine, 13, writes articles for different magazines!

Earning is learning. By working to earn your own money, you are learning the skills you will need to succeed in life. These skills can include things like getting along with others, using technology and using your time. Some people think that asking for money is a lot easier than earning it; however, when you make your own money, you don't have to depend on someone else. The five dollars that you earn will probably make you feel a lot better in your hand than the twenty dollars you ask for.

Shanghai-born novelist Lu Shi'e wrote a fantasy novel called New China in 1910. In the book he described a dream where trains were running underground, an iron bridge crossed the Huangpu River and Shanghai hosted a successful World Exposition in the underdeveloped Pudong area at that time. The blueprint described in the novel became real exactly after 100 years.

On May 1, 2010, the World Exposition, with 158 years of history, drew back its curtain from Shanghai. According to a source at the Organizing Committee(组织委员会) of the World Exposition 2010 Shanghai, it is expected to attract more than 70 million visitors, making it the most popular exposition in history. Today is the Earth Day. Our reporter Nick Ford interviewed several people in the street. This is what they told him:

9:26, Miss. Mayfield, a young teacher

I try to tell my students the importance of our relations with wild animals. I take them to zoos and forests, and I avoid using materials that come from wild animals, for example, ivory, which comes from elephants. I don't wear things made of fur, and I even avoid buying leather shoes. Wool is okay, though-the sheep don't get hurt!

    10:03, Mr. Perdue, a businessman

I don't use my car for short journeys. I walk or go by bike. It's good for my health, and it doesn't pollute the air.

    10:30, Tom Pitt, a 14-year-old student

I only buy writing paper and notebooks made from recycled paper. And when I buy something made of wood, like a wooden table, I'll make sure that the wood comes from a forest where they plant new trees.

    11:01, Mr. White, an artist

I'm an artist, and I enjoy recycled art. They are things make out of rubbish-like this model plane made from old containers. In fact, I hate throwing things away. I even keep my old woolen clothes and cotton handkerchiefs and use them for cleaning.

    11:35, Ms. Nelson, a policewoman

I'm careful not to waste electricity. For example, I always turn the lights off when I leave a room. And I don't have the TV on when I'm not watching it.

    12:00, Mr. Parks, a doctor

I take my empty bottles, jars, and anything else made of glass to recycling center every week. I try not to buy plastic bottles because you can't recycle most kinds of plastic.
