On March 25, 2010, Kate and David Ogg heard the words every parent fear greatly: Their newborn wasn't going to make it. Their twins-a girl and a boy-were born two minutes apart and 14 weeks premature, weighing just over two pounds each. Doctors had tried to save the boy for 20 minutes but saw no improvement. His heartbeat was nearly gone, and he'd stopped breathing.

"I saw him breath, but the doctor said it was no use, Kate told the Daily Mail. I know it sounds stupid, but if he was still breathing, that was a sign of life. I wasn't going to give up easily. "

Still, the Sydney couple knew this was likely goodbye. In an effort to cherish her last minutes with the tiny boy, Kate asked to hold him.

I wanted to meet him, and for him to know us, " Kate told Today. "We'd resigned ourselves to the fact that we were going to lose him, and we were just trying to make the most of those last, precious moments. "

Kate unwrapped the boy, whom the couple had already named Jamie, from his hospital blanket and ordered David to join them in bed. The first-time parents wanted their son to be as warm as possible and hoped the skin-to-skin contact would improve his condition. They also talked to him.

We were trying to entice him to stay, "Kate told the Daily Mail. "We explained his name and that he had a twin that he had to look out for and how hard we had tried to have him.

Then something miraculous happened. Jamie gasped again-and then he started breathing. Finally, the couple's lost boy had made it.

Eight years later, Jamie and his sister, Emily, are happy and healthy. The Oggs only recently told the kids the story of their birth. "Emily burst into tears, "Kate said. "She was really upset, and she kept hugging Jamie. This whole experience makes you cherish them more. "

    24. In the passage, which of the following is true?

    A. Kate gave birth to twins after only 14 weeks of pregnancy in 2010.

    B. Neither of the twins weighed more than 3 pounds each when they were born.

    C. The boy had no heartbeat when he was born.

    D. Two minutes after the twins were born, the parents heard the boy wasn't going to make it.

    25. The underlined word "entice" in the sixth paragraph refers to ___.

    A. attract

    B. order

    C. invite

    D. beg

    26. It can be inferred from the text that ___.

    A. The doctors were tired of saving the boy.

    B. Hearing the sad news, the couple felt so hopeless.

    C. Jamie came back to life and grew up healthily.

    D. Emily was so happy after she heard the story.

    27. Which might be the best title for the passage?

    A. Life-Giving Touch

    B. The Boy Who Lived

    C. Power of Parents' Love

    D. A Medical Miracle

    C

At the end of the 1985 film Back to the Future. " Doc Brown swoops in from the future to pick up his partner in a De-Lorean fueled by trash. In 2022 trash-powered vehicles still sound like science fiction, but a technology revolution may be turning them into a reality.

Hidden among the carefully striated条纹layers of waste at the local landfill is a potent energy source: methane gas. When it isn't transformed into something else, methane is an extremely strong pollutant, 82 times as powerful as carbon dioxide. In a lesson about how the energy transition is likely to play out, landfill operators' ability to make use of excess gas has exploded in recent years. New facilities are being created to convert转化 trash into renewable natural gasRNG.

The potential has spurred刺激 major sanitation and energy companies to break into this new market. In October the British company BP agreed to acquire Archaea Energy, a company that designs, builds and operates RNG plants in the U. S. to convert waste emissions. Archaea produces 6, 000 oil-equivalent barrels油桶当量a day through 13 RNG facilities with plans to construct 88 more to serve rising demand. Our only input is trash.

Archaea sells largely to voluntary buyers who wish to lock in clean gas at fair prices. RNG still comes at a high price compared with other fuel sources, but reducing the cost of producing RNG will mean more of it is available to buyers on attractive terms. We are working to lower the price of RNG by creating standardized and modular模块化的production facilities with decreased operating costs, higher processing efficiency, and uptime rates that start above 90%. Small-scale breakthroughs in gas processing enabled us to improve the portion of usable natural gas recovered from landfills to 95%, up from an industry standard of 75%.

Some of the predictions in "Back to the Future" proved too far-fetched. Flying cars seem as distant today aas they were in the 1980s. But power from trash? Today trash represents a permanent carbon-negative source of natural gas. Voluntary transactions in RNG and the micro-scale process improvements that have boosted this market suggest a far more circular economy on the horizon.

    28. According to the passage, which one of the following is true?

    A. There are high concentrations of carbon methane gas in the waste of landfills.

    B. The burning efficiency of methane is 82 times that of carbon dioxide.

    C. In recent years, landfill operators have abused excess gas and caused explosions.

    D. People are building new facilities to convert garbage into renewable energy.

    29. What is the industry standard for the proportion of natural gas recovered from landfills?

    A. 70%

    B. 75%

    C. 90%

    D. 95%

    30. It can be inferred about Archaea Energy from the text that __.

    A. The company closed down in October unluckily.

    B. If there are 88 RNG facilities, Archaea will be able to produce more than 6000 barrels of oil per day.

    C. Archaea produces renewable natural gas by importing garbage and some chemical additives.

    D. The company is committed to enabling buyers to get more RNG on attractive terms.

    31. What is the author's attitude towards flying cars fueled by garbage?

    A. Optimistic.

    B. Objective.

    C. Pessimistic.

    D. Neutral

    D

Schumpeter is only an amateur stargazer天文爱好者. His equipment is no fancier than a pair of eyes and a place in the countryside, away from London's light pollution. That is enough to make out Venus, Mars, Jupiter and Saturn-and, occasionally, the International Space Station crossing the sky. In the past few years a new spectacle has appeared in the form of the Starlink satellites. Launched by SpaceX, they look like nothing else in the heavens, floating like a train of white dots in tight formation.

SpaceX is a remarkable firm founded to further Mr Musk's dream of colonizing Mars. Its rockets cost half as much as its rivals' do, thanks in part to their ability to land their first stages for reuse rather than dumping them in the sea in line with standard industry practice.

SpaceX's rocket business alone does not justify this rich valuation. The market for launches is small and stagnant 不景气的. This is where Starlink comes in. Those satellites are the lead of a planned constellation1发射计划of over1, 000, designed to beam 传输the Internet to every corner of the globe.

Satellite broadband is not a new idea. But existing options are expensive and slow. Starlink's cheap, mass-produced, low-flying satellites would, SpaceX claims, offer a service comparable to earthly broadband at competitive prices.

Starlink's chief competitor is OneWeb, with 74 satellites in orbit and hundreds more planned. It, too, went bust in March, after failing to persuade SonMasayoshi, a Japanese billionaire, to invest more cash. But it has new sponsors. On July 3rd Boris Johnson, Britain's prime minister, announced that his government had stumped up S500m for a 45% stake in OneWeb, and a golden share giving it control over its future. Bharti Global, an Indian telecoms firm, also put in S500m.

OneWeb may need more cash if it is to complete its constellation. British taxpayers may never see a financial return on their investment. But if OneWeb keeps Mr Musk on his toes even for a little while, their loss may turn out to be global consumers' gain. Stranger things have happened in space.

    32. What is the function of Paragraph 1?

    A. To show respect for amateur stargazers.

    B. To draw readers' attention to light pollution.

    C. To introduce the topic of Starlink satellites.

    D. To give an example of observing stars.

    33. What is the reason for the emergence of Starlink?

    A. The rocket launch market is small and depressed.

    B. SpaceX's rockets can be recycled in the first stage of launch.

    C. The rocket cost of SpaceX is only half that of its competitors.

    D. Starlink can provide services comparable to earthly broadband at competitive prices.

    34. How did OneWeb maintain its economy?

    A. It built 74 in-orbit satellites and planned hundreds of them.

    B. It persuaded SonMasayoshi to invest more money.

    C. Boris Johnson's government and an Indian company invested a total of S1 billion.

    D. The continuous competition between OneWeb and SpaceX brought it benefits.

    35. From the last paragraph, we can infer that

    A. OneWeb's financial losses may turn out to be global consumers' gain

    B. the battle between OneWeb and SpaceX may benefit global consumers

    C. Mr Musk may step on global consumers' toes when he achieves success

    D. OneWeb no longer needs financial support from British taxpayers

Idioms are one of the hardest parts of learning a language. For those of you who don't know, an idiom is a phrase which has a meaning, 36 If you translate an idiom word for word, it sometimes makes no sense at all. They are like puzzles and even native speakers can get confused when someone uses a phrase that they've never heard of.

With that in mind, here are five common English idioms that you can use in a variety of situations.

    1. Get your act together Meaning: you need to improve your behaviour/work

This might be something your teacher says to you if you score badly in an exam or if you misbehave in class. 37 . For example, if your friend is being mean or nasty for no reason, then you can tell them that they need to get their act together.

    2. Pull yourself together Meaning: calm down

38 , because you need to tell someone they are overreacting and that they need to relax. Only use this if you think the person you are speaking to is getting upset over something insignificant. If your friend tells you that their close relative has died, it is NOT the time to tell them to pull themselves together.

    3. I'm feeling under the weather Meaning: I'm sick

Yes, it's longer and more difficult to say than 'I'm sick', but if your English teacher asks you why you haven't done your homework, 39 You may not have done your English homework, but your teacher might be impressed that you know how to make eloquent excuses in a foreign language.

    4. It's a piece of cake Meaning: it's easy

I don't know why this means what it does, but sometimes you just have to accept that English people use weird phrases.

    5. Break a leg Meaning: good luck!

    40. If someone says this to you, do not take offence or think they are threatening you; instead, they are just wishing you luck. It is most often used for people wishing success to actors and actresses before they perform on the stage, but it can be said in other situations, too.

All in all, learning a new language can be challenging. It's definitely not a piece of cake, especially when there are so many confusing idioms. However, with enough hard work and interest, you will succeed in no time. Break a leg!

    A. This is a somewhat impolite English idiom

    B. This is especially useful for bad-mannered people

    C. You can also use it to talk about people in general

    D. so you need to translate the phrase literally

    E. but the meaning is not clear from the words themselves

    F. This is perhaps one of the most confusing yet well-known English idioms

    G. he or she is more likely to forgive you if you say that you were feeling that way

To be up to the task, NASA says ifs looking for healthy, motivated US citizens or permanent residents, aged 30 to 55, with a strong desire for adventure.
