Dear David,

 Our school will organize the students to go mountain-climbing on Saturday this weekend. On behalf of our class, I sincerely invite you to join us.

All the participants are required to gather at the school gate at seven o'clock and then take the school buses to the foot of the Hushan Mountain. The climbing activity is scheduled to start at eight o'clock, and will last for three hours. We will sing songs on the way and play games at the mountain top. A good sight of the view and sincere communication can also be the rewards.

Paragraph 1: I was sitting in the auditorium. Listening to a group of girls sing the latest pop songs at the talent show, I got bored with it and I wanted it to end so I could read Eragon. Then a shy girl walked on stage. I recognized her immediately. Valeri held a violin in one hand and a bow in the other. She started to play. The notes formed a soft, sweet tune. Then it turned fast, then faster. Suddenly, the music stopped altogether before the tune came back.

Paragraph 2: Valeri ended the violin song with one hard, fast, loud note. The auditorium fell completely silent until we realized the music was finished. Still lost in the beautiful music, we burst into a thunder of applause. Valeri took a swift bow and walked off stage. I smiled to myself. Valeri wasn't just a “quiet girl”. She liked reading and knew a lot. Amazingly, she could play the violin so well. I got  an idea that Valeri was the new friend I was looking for.

M: Hi, there. I need to mail some items through your shipping service.

W: Sure. What are the contents of your package?

M: It’s just a few papers. I’m sending them to my office in Chicago.

W: OK. Our fastest service will arrive on the same day. We also have an overnight delivery. The slowest option we can guarantee is 2-3 days.

M: This is very important material, So I’ll need your fastest service.

W: Great. Now I just need the name and address, unless you already have an account.

M: I don’t. Please send to J&K Law Offices, 290 Willow Drive, Chicago.

W: How would you like to pay? You can pay cash at pick-up, or now with a credit card.

M: Now is better. Just let me get my wallet.

M: Can you wake me up at 8 tomorrow, Mum? I want to go running before breakfast.

W: OK, Charlie. What are you doing after that?

M: I’ve got my first Spanish class with Julia.

W: That’s just for an hour, isn’t it? When you finish it at 10 you can go to the supermarket with me.

M: At 12:30, Dad and I want to take the boat out for a few hours.

W: That’s OK. What time will you be back?

M: I need to be back by 4 because I have to study for a test next week.

W: Dad and I are going to the theatre tomorrow evening, so you can eat with us at 6.

M: OK. At 7:30 I’m going to Tom’s house. We’re going to watch the football match together.

W: All right. Guess I’ll have to ask my sister to watch it with me.

W: Hey, Peter, it’s me. You don’t need to pick me up at the airport this afternoon. My plane will take off late because of a heavy snow storm here.

M: Oh. Has the broadcast said how long your flight would be delayed?

W: It said it would keep us updated on the newest information.  My best guess, it won’t take off at least in 5 hours.

M: Geez. You know our 4 kids are expecting to have supper with you tonight.

W: Oh, those little cute things. Tell them I have bought many gifts for them, and I’ll read bedtime stories for them for the next whole month to make it up.

M: All right. Anyway, keep me posted.  I’ll make our kids go to bed early tonight and then drive to pick you up.

W: But you can’t leave our kids alone at home. Will you ask our neighbor to help?

M: I’ll ask our friend Jack to come and keep an eye on them.

W: Today I’d like to talk about Hollywood. How Hollywood became a name for American film industry is a strange story.

There was a village in southern California called Cahuenga Valley and Mr. and Mrs. Wilcox lived there. In 1887, Mrs. Wilcox met a stranger on a trip, who had a home called Hollywood. Mrs. Wilcox liked the name so much that she gave her home the same name. Because the Wilcox’s home was the biggest in Cahuenga Valley, the village soon became known as Hollywood.

Between 1908 and 1913, many small independent film companies began moving to southern California. They were attracted by the sunny climate, which let them film throughout the year without the need for expensive lighting. And they wanted to get away from New York where they had problems with the larger, more powerful companies.

When the only one studio was set up in Hollywood, the local people were very angry. So a law was passed forbidding the building of any more companies. Anyway, by 1915, “Hollywood” had become famous for its film industry.
