What makes the people in the store change their attitudes towards Henry? He goes to a tailor’s shop. He wants new clothes. They show him ready-made clothes, because he looks poor and these clothes are cheaper. They change their attitudes after seeing the million-pound note because they think that he is rich. 4. Why would the owner be willing to wait for a long time to get paid? 5. Is it right to judge people by their clothes? Why or why not?Perhaps he thinks that Henry will come back and buy a lot more clothes in the future or tell his wealthy friends about the shop. No, it’s not right, for two reasons. First, everyone has dignity and should be treated with the same respect. Second, you cannot judge someone before you know all the facts about this person. Dressing well or having a lot of money doesn’t mean someone is a nice person. Sometimes appearances are deceptive. 2. Underline the sentences that show how people’s attitudes change towards Henry. At first sight of Henrythe clerks ____________________ looked down upon himWhen Henry said that he had no small change to pay for the suitthe third clerk _____________ ___________ but ____________ ____________ didn’t appearspokeangrysarcastically(讽刺地)When the owner and the clerk saw the bank notethey became _________________________________ shocked and all flattered HenryWhen Henry was waiting for his change the owner was quite _______________________nice, polite and flattering to HenryThe components of the play script 剧本的基本元素What elements should be contained in a play script?  character names  lines of dialogue  narration  scene  stage directions  title of play 人物名 台词 旁白;解说场次 舞台指导 剧名Try to find an example for each of the elements from the text.Title of playsceneNarration Character namesStage directionsLines of dialogue In classical Western theatre, a play has three acts. The first act gives the basic setting for the story and introduces the characters; the second act involves a conflict or struggle of some sort; finally, in the third act that conflict is somehow resolved, usually after a climax(高潮)where the conflict or struggle from the second act is intensified and brought to a head. With each act, there are scenes. Each scene takes place in a different setting. Or, if it takes place in the same setting, it involves different characters or occurs sometime after the previous scene.Acts (幕) and Scenes (场)Stage directions 舞台说明to tell the living environment and setting;to direct actors’ movement, gesture, facial expression, tone of voice etc.舞台说明是剧作家的提示语言,一般用括号括起来,具有增强舞台气氛、烘托人物心情、展示人物性格、推动故事情节等作用。Lines 台词(lines of dialogue对话, narration旁白, monologue独白)to show the plotsto portray charactersto show the theme剧作者则须在人物头一次开口,便显出他的性格来。这很不容易。剧作者必需知道他的人物的全部生活,才能三言两语便使人物站立起来,闻其声,知其人。 ---- 老舍Language features of a play script 戏剧的语言特征A play has a unique format and style. In the play, an American by the name of Henry Adams is washed ashore in England with no money or friends. By chance, he is made the subject of a bet by two wealthy and eccentric brothers. Their wager is over whether someone could live in London for thirty days with no money apart from a million-pound bank note, which he could not deposit in a bank or spend. After coming into possession of the bank note, Henry finds that people's attitudes towards him drastically change, and everyone falls allover themselves to help him. He moves into a nice hotel, he makes business deals, and he falls in love, but there are a few hiccups along the way. For example, he loses the bank note. I liked the play because it was funny and had some exciting twists and turns. I recommend it to everyone.
