Bookstores are fascinating places. There the books can take you to magical lands, help you learn a foreign language, or cook a delicious meal. But when your community doesn’t have enough space for a real brick bookstore, you have to make a compromise (妥协). A mobile bookstore that brings books around the country is the result. That is the case for Rita Collins, 70, who dreamed of opening a bookstore after retiring.
A business planning class convinced Collins that opening a bookstore in the small town where she lives would not be practical. Eureka, Montana, located just nine miles from the Canadian border, only has a population of 1,517. Collins asked her instructors about a traveling bookstore on wheels and they were doubtful. But she insisted.
Collins was inspired by Dylans Mobile Bookstore, a traveling bookstore in Wales run by Jeff Towns. She contacted Jeff for advice but she was largely on her own when it came to building her bookstore. First, she had to find a vehicle large enough to stand in. Then she had to have it refitted with shelves that would hold the books at a 15-degree angle so that they would stay in place while in transportation. Collins named her bookstore St Rita’s Traveling Bookstore, which has been on the road since 2015.
At first, she drove through Montana and then she made her first cross-country trip in 2016. Collins and her mobile bookstore have visited 30 states. Collins loves meeting people and making connections. She sets up a typewriter outside the store and encourages customers to write. One time, a young man typed an entire page about a friend of his. That’s something she never expected.
While she loves what she does, Collins doesn’t think she can keep doing it due to her old age. In several years, she hopes to pass her traveling bookstore onto another bibliophile (爱书者)who shares the same interest and will keep it on the road.
    4. Why does the author mention the mobile bookstore in Paragraph 1?
    A. To advertise it in small towns.
    B. To compare it with the fixed one.
    C. To introduce the story of Collins.
    D. To introduce the main types of bookstores.
    5. Why was Collins advised not to open a bookstore in her town?
    A. Few people love reading in her town. B. It has a small consumer market.
    C. She lacked start-up capital. D. No one gave her guidance.
    6. What does Paragraph 3 mainly talk about?
    A. Where Collins got the inspiration for her bookstore.
    B. Why Collins bookstore became famous soon.
    C. How Collins got support for her bookstore.
    D. How Collins built her mobile bookstore.
    7. What is Collins’ future plan?
    A. To invite more people to open traveling bookstores.
    B. To find a booklover to take over her bookstore.
    C. To keep traveling to other states by herself.
    D. To sell more books in many areas.
C 5. B 6. D 7. B
根据第一段“A mobile bookstore that brings books around the country is the result. That is the case for Rita Collins, 70, who dreamed of opening a bookstore after retiring. (一个移动书店将图书带到全国各地。70岁的Rita Collins就是这样,她梦想退休后开一家书店。)”可推断,作者在开头提到移动书店的目的是引出本文要讲述的故事。故选 C。
    【5题详解】

    【6题详解】
主旨大意题。根据第三段内容,特别是第一句“Collins was inspired by Dylans Mobile Bookstore, a traveling bookstore in Wales run by Jeff Towns.(柯林斯的灵感来自迪伦移动书店,这是一家由杰夫·唐斯在威尔士经营的流动书店。)”
根据最后一段“In several years, she hopes to pass her traveling bookstore onto another bibliophile (爱书者)who shares the same interest and will keep it on the road. (几年后,她希望把她的旅行书店传给另一位有同样兴趣的藏书家,并让它继续经营下去。)”可知,Collins的未来计划是将移动书店移交给热爱的人,以便其继续运转。故选B。

Music is not just a set of sounds and rhythms. Its influence on the brain is much deeper than any other human experience. Keep on reading to know all those amazing powers of music.
A recent study suggests that preterm(早产的) babies appear to experience less pain and feed more when listening to music. Experts led by Dr. Manoj Kumar of the University of Alberta, Canada, found that music had a beneficial effect on reducing pain for preterm babies experiencing painful medical tests. It also appeared to benefit full-term babies during operations.
Many people experiencing brain damage have speech and movement-related problems. Music can help recover from brain injuries. As a different and effective treatment, doctors often advise such patients to listen to good music to improve the parts of the brain responsible for these two functions. When people with neurological(神经的) disorders hear a musical beat, it helps them to regain a balanced walk.
Though music cannot make deafness disappear, it really can stave off the loss of hearing. There was an experiment involving 163 people where 74 were musicians. Participants were asked to pass some listening tests. Musicians heard the sounds better than non-musicians, and this difference gets clearer with age. This means that a 70-year-old musician hears better than a 50-year-old non-musician, even in a noisy environment.
Besides, music mends a broken heart. It is not about a thrown-away love, but about a heart attack. The matter is that music can help people recover from a heart attack or heart operation by reducing blood pressure, slowing down the heartbeat rate, and reducing anxiety. Listening to the quality music produces positive emotions, improves the movement of blood, and expands blood vessels, thus, promoting quick recovery of the whole cardiovascular(心血管的)system.
    8. How does music affect preterm babies?
    A. It helps repair their neurological systems. B. It helps develop their potential in music.
    C. It helps improve their hearing systems. D. It helps reduce their pain.
    9. What does the underlined phrase “stave off” in Paragraph 4 mean?
    A. cause B. increase C. prevent D. cure
    10. Why can music mend a broken heart?
    A. It can help people prevent diseases caused by anxiety.
    B. It has a positive effect on human body systems’ work.
    C. It helps make a person feel optimistic about life.
    D. It can help patients recover in a slow way.
    11. What may be the best title for the text?
    A. How music affects our mind and body? B. The way to choose quality music.
    C. The best time to listen to music. D. Who can benefit from music?
D 9. C 10. B 11. A
根据第二段“A recent study suggests that preterm (早产的) babies appear to experience less pain and feed more when listening to music.(最近的一项研究表明,早产儿听音乐时似乎疼痛更少,吃得更多。)”
根据划线部分第四段第一句的转折关系,以及“Participants were asked to pass some listening tests. Musicians heard the sounds better than non-musicians, and this difference gets clearer with age. This means that a 70-year-old musician hears better than a 50-year-old non-musician, even in a noisy environment.(参与者被要求通过一些听力测试。音乐家比非音乐家更能听到声音,这种差异随着年龄的增长而变得更加明显。这意味着一个70岁的音乐家比一个50岁的非音乐家的听力更好,即使在嘈杂的环境中。)”可知,划线词所在句子的意思为“虽然音乐不能使耳聋消失,但它确实可以延缓听力的丧失”,即划线词 stave off 意为“延缓”。故选 C。
    【10题详解】
细节理解题。根据最后一段“The matter is that music can help people recover from a heart attack or heart operation by reducing blood pressure, slowing down the heartbeat rate, and reducing anxiety. Listening to the quality music produces positive emotions, improves the movement of blood, and expands blood vessels, thus, promoting quick recovery of the whole cardiovascular (心血管的) system.(重要的是,音乐可以帮助人们从心脏病发作或心脏手术中恢复,通过降低血压,减慢心跳频率,减少焦虑。听优质的音乐能产生积极的情绪,促进血液流动,扩张血管,从而促进整个心血管系统的快速恢复。)”可知,音乐可以修补一颗破碎的心,是因为它对人体系统的工作有积极的影响。故选 B。
    【11题详解】
主旨大意题。通读全文尤其是第一段“Keep on reading to know all those amazing powers of music.(继续往下读,了解音乐的神奇力量。)” 因此,本文的最佳标题为 A 选项“How music affects our mind and body(音乐是如何影响我们的身心的)”。故选 A。
    D
The Sequoia National Park in California’s southern Sierra Nevada mountains is best known for the Giant Forest, a collection of 2,000 trees that includes half of the Earth’s largest and longest-living trees. This past weekend, the ancient wonders came dangerously close to being burned by the KNP Complex Fire. But thanks to resourceful firefighters, the precious treasure has been saved.
The fire personnel had taken the standard measures of clearing bushes and setting controlled fires long before the fire began heading toward the Giant Forest. But they knew more needed to be done. On September 17, 2021, they took the unusual step of covering the base of some of the oldest trees with protective aluminum “blankets”. High on the list was General Sherman, the world’s largest tree by volume. The park officials believed the specialized foil (锡纸) would help block some of the heat from the flames and enhance the natural insulation (隔热) provided by the ancient trees’ thick bark. They were right!
On Sunday, September 19, 2021, the officials reported that the extra prevention measures, which also included 24-hour timed sprinklers (洒水装置) on General Sherman and the nearby park buildings, had worked. Jack Owen, a spokesman for the KNP Complex Fire Information Office, said, “There are no trees that have been burned yet, as far as in the Giant Forest. Fire crews are pouring everything they can into it as long as it’s safe. That area is looking good.”
Unfortunately, the same cannot be said about the rest of the national park. The KNP Complex Fire has burned through 21,777 acres. Meanwhile, the Windy Fire, which started further south on the Sierra slopes on the same night, has burned over 21,598 acres. Hopefully, the weather will cooperate and allow firefighters to gain control of the massive fires, which are now beginning to threaten nearby communities.
    12. What did the firefighters first do to protect the Giant Forest from fire?
    A. Cover it with specialized foil.
    B. Put it on the list of protective steps.
    C. Set up a fire prevention belt around it.
    D. Identify the features of the complex fire.
    13. Why was the specialized foil applied?
    A. To prevent some heat from the fire.
    B. To stop the fire from spreading.
    C. To keep tree roots from losing water.
    D. To test the survival ability of the trees.
    14. What can we infer from paragraph 3?
    A. Fire crews are ready to leave.
    B. General Sherman is comparatively safe.
    C. Nearby buildings have been abandoned.
    D. Some trees in the Giant Forest have been cut down.
    15. What does the author think about the safety of the rest of the national park?
    A Worried. B. Optimistic.
    C. Discouraged. D. Unconcerned.
C 13. A 14. B 15. A
根据第二段内容尤其是第一句“The fire personnel had taken the standard measures of clearing brush and setting controlled fires long before the fire began heading toward the Giant Forest.(早在大火开始向the Giant Forest蔓延之前,消防人员就采取了清理灌木丛和控制火势的标准措施。)”
根据第二段第五句中的“The park officials believed the specialized foil (锡纸) would help block some of the heat from the flames(公园管理人员认为,这种特殊的锡纸有助于阻挡火焰的部分热量)”可知,这种特殊的锡纸可以阻挡火焰的部分热量。故选 A。
根据第三段内容尤其是第一句中的“which also included 24-hour timed sprinklers (洒水装置) on General Sherman and the nearby park buildings, had worked(General Sherman 和公园附近的建筑物上的 24小时定时洒水装置起了作用。)”以及最后一句“That area is looking good. (这个地区看起来不错。)”可推知,General Sherman是相对安全的。故选 B。
    【15题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段内容尤其是第一句“Unfortunately, the same cannot be said about the rest of the national park. (不幸的是,国家公园的其他地方就不一样了。)”和最后一句中的“which are now beginning to threaten nearby communities.(大火现在已经开始威胁到附近的社区。)” 故选 A。

根据后文“It’s important for you to understand that cultures and beliefs are different from each other across different nations so you can communicate effectively with people from other countries.(了解不同国家的文化和信仰是不同的,这对你来说很重要,这样你就可以有效地与来自其他国家的人交流。)” B“Pay more attention to cultural differences.(多注意文化差异。)”
根据前文“The best way to handle cultural differences is to research how different countries handle business meetings or any other type of communication. 【19题详解】
根据前文“Go over any form of written communication before you send it out. It is easy to cause misunderstandings when you deal with people from different parts of the world.(在发送任何形式的书面交流之前,都要仔细检查一遍。当你和来自世界各地的人打交道时,很容易造成误解。)”和后文“When reviewing it, make sure that you’re not using disrespectful terms or sentences. (在回顾的时候,确保你没有使用不敬的术语或句子。)”可知,造成误解是很容易的,在你不知道的情况下就发生了。所以选择项A“This may happen without your knowing. (这可能发生在你不知道的情况下。)”符合上下文语境。故选A。
根据前文“Always stay updated with the social developments. (随时与社会发展保持同步。)”及本段内容可知,本段强调因为技术进步很快,所以要注意与时俱进的重要性。所以选择项F“It’s known that technology has improved rapidly over the years. (众所周知,这些年技术进步很快。)”符合上下文语境。故选F。

I’m honored to introduce World Book Day here. Set up by the UNESCO in 1995, it falls on April 23rd every year, aimed at encouraging people to enjoy the pleasure of reading.
As we all know, reading enriches our mind and broadens our vision, making us more knowledgeable. Besides, it helps cultivate our taste and brings us relaxation and joy. As Francis Bacon said, reading makes a full man. Therefore, I call on us to form the habit of reading more books. I am sure we will benefit a lot.
    Thanks for your listening.

A Mother’s Heartfelt Note of Love
Everything seemed to have changed for me when I entered high school. I never saw a single person I knew from middle school. At home I was just as lonely. “My brothers and sister all fit in.” I thought, coming in the door after another bad day at school. “Why can’t I?”
Mom was there waiting for me. “Karole, your bedroom’s a disaster. Why can’t you keep it clean?” The last thing I needed was criticism from my mother. What had happened to the mother who used to snuggle (依偎) with me on the sofa, loving me with complete acceptance? Who thought everything I did was wonderful? I didn’t bother trying to explain my unhappiness. It was easier to hide in my bedroom, without saying a word, like I did every afternoon.
Clearing off some space, I sat down at my desk. Yet another thing I wasn’t good at anymore. My grades had slipped along with my confidence. I turned to a new page in my notebook and started working out the first problem. Almost immediately, I saw I’d made a mistake. “Wrong again!” I thought. “You can’t do anything right!” I tore the paper out of my notebook, balled it up in my fist and threw it at the wastepaper basket. The ball landed on the floor. I heard my mother’s voice in my head, “Why can’t you keep your room clean?”
By the time I finished my homework, the floor was littered with crumpled (弄皱的) paper. It gave me a kind of satisfaction to see the mess I’d made. Like it was proof of all my shortcomings. Every time I looked at those crumpled balls, I reminded myself what a failure I was. But my unhappiness stayed hidden away, just like those mistakes. With my face a mask of indifference, no one knew what I was really feeling. Who would want to listen?
One day, I came home to an empty house. It was a relief not to be met with Mom’s latest complaint. “Nothing I do is right in her eyes.” I thought. “Or anyone else’s, including mine.”
    注意:
    1.续写词数应为150左右;
    2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
When I opened my bedroom door, I froze at the sight of a neat and orderly room.
    _____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
I sat down at my desk, staring at those words.
    _____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
One possible version:
When I opened my bedroom door, I froze at the sight of a neat and orderly room. Mom had obviously decided to clean it herself. I was surprised to see the clean floor below my bed. All the crumpled paper had disappeared. Except one. A single sheet lay in plain view. I picked up the sheet and recognized Mom’s perfect handwriting, saying “I have found that I have also been very critical of you lately. For that, I am truly sorry. I only expect that you are to be your same sweet self.”
I sat down at my desk, staring at those words. A weight seemed to lift from me. I realized that Mom still loved me the same way. When she got home, I found the confidence to let down my guard and talk to her about how I felt. She and my father teamed up to offer some ideas that might help, like joining after-school clubs. I seemed like everything changed in high school, but one heartfelt note set the stage for the rest of my teenage years.
①决定做某事:decide to do/be determined to do/make up one’s mind to do
    ②看见:see/spot/notice/find
    ③意识到:recognize/realize
不满:be critical of/be unsastified with
    ③真诚的:heartfelt/sincere/
【点睛】[高分句型1]I have found that I have also been very critical of you lately.
[高分句型2]When she got home, I found the confidence to let down my guard and talk to her about how I felt.
