If you have ever seen the art of Jonathan Green, it is not likely that you will soon forget it. His paintings are bold and colorful, lively and cheerful. Green depicts a way of life that is rapidly disappearing. It is a way of life that he remembers with fondness from his childhood in the South Carolina Sea Islands.

Jonathan Green was born in 1955 in Gardens Corner, South Carolina, a region of the state known as the Low Country. The second of seven children, Green was raised by his maternal grandmother, Eloise Stewart Johnson. As he grew up, he was immersed in Gullah culture--a culture that placed great value on tradition, family, and community. Although Green had to travel to other parts of the world before he could fully appreciate his rich heritage, the basic elements of his culture eventually found their way into his unique form of artistic expression.

After Green graduated from high school, he joined the military. It seemed like a good opportunity for him to see the world and to receive an education. When he completed his military service, Green attended the Art Institute of Chicago. While he was in school, he worked part-time as a security guard at an art museum. This allowed him to study the work of the masters. He imitated their work at first, learning what made them so well respected. Then, Green found his own style and direction and began painting South Carolina's Gullah Islands, the world he knew best.

Jonathan Green's artwork is filled with everyday images of Gullah life as he remembered it growing up. His paintings show people hanging laundry out to dry, picking oysters, telling stories, and attending weddings and funerals. Water is found in many of his paintings because it plays an important role in the lives of people who live along the coast and on the islands.

Human beings are also found in nearly all of Green's work, indicating the importance of family and community to the culture. The faces of the people in his paintings are usually without features. This can be interpreted as Green's way of showing how the everyday lives and experiences of people are universal. The Gullah way of life is changing as children grow up and move away to larger towns and cities. Jonathan Green knows that his artwork cannot change what is happening to the area where he grew up. But his paintings can raise awareness of what is in danger of being lost and preserve the memories of a rich and colorful way of life.

24.What can we learn from the passage?

A good night's sleep can make you feel better. Researchers say that quality sleep may even add years to people's lives.

Men who sleep well could live almost five years longer than those who do not. Women could benefit by two years. Researchers also found that young people who had better sleep habits were less likely to die early. But quantity of sleep was not in itself enough to achieve the possible health benefits. Quality of sleep is also important.

Good sleep was based on five different factors. These were: ideal sleep duration of seven to eight hours a night; difficulty falling asleep no more than two times a week; trouble staying asleep no more than two times a week; not using any sleep medication; and feeling well rested after waking up at least five days a week.

The findings suggested that about 8% of deaths from any cause could be attributed to poor sleep patterns. Dr Frank Qian is an internal medicine resident physician at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston, America. He said: "We saw a clear dose-response relationship. So the more beneficial factors someone has in terms of having higher quality of sleep, they also have a stepwise lowering of all causes. "

The researchers included data from 172,321 people. They had an average age of 50. 54% of them were women. They participated in the National Health Interview Survey between 2013 and 2018. The survey looked at the health of the US population. It included questions about sleep and sleep habits.

People were followed for an average of 4.3 years. During this time, 8,681 died. Of these deaths, 2,610 (30%) were from cardiovascular disease. 2,052 (24%) was from cancer. And 4,019 (46%) were due to other causes. Among men and women who reported having all five quality sleep measures (a score of five), life expectancy was 4.7 years greater for men. And it was 2.4% greater for women. This was compared with those who had none or only one of the factors.

More research is needed to determine why men had double the increase in life expectancy compared with women who had the same quality sleep.

There is a limitation of the study. The sleep habits were self-reported and not objectively measured or checked.

28.Who is most likely to have a good sleep?

    1. Alice, who falls asleep as soon as she touches the pillow after taking a

    sleeping pill every day.

    1. Betty, who falls asleep quickly and has a nightmare at least 3 times a week.
    2. Candy, who feels refreshed after sleeping tight weekdays.
    3. David, who counts sheep and has a sound sleep every day.

29.What can we learn from the passage?

    1. The sleep habits in the study were reported by the test subjects.
    2. Quantity of sleep was enough to achieve the health benefits.
    3. Men had double the life span compared with women.
    4. Poor sleep pattern caused 8% of deaths from all causes of cancer.

30.How did the researchers come to their findings ?

    1. By referring to another study.
    2. By consulting the authoritative agencies.
    3. By interviewing the professionals.
    4. By conducting data analysis.

31.What is the writer’s attitude to the the finding of the study?

    1. Ambiguous   B. Objective   C. Indifferent   D. Doubtful

    D

Nowadays some companies are attempting to grow seafood from cells in a laboratory rather than harvesting it from the oceans.

With massive problems with overfishing worldwide and growing demand for shrinking supplies of seafood, the way fish currently makes its way to our plates isn't a long-term viable option. Between 1961 and 2016, the average annual increase in global food fish consumption outpaced population growth. Those are figures not sustainable for us, the fish or the environment as a whole.

Cellular seafood could be the answer. Just don't make the mistake of calling it lab-grown fish. ''None of us in the industry would call it lab-grown seafood, '' says Mike Selden, CEO of Finless Foods. ''Finless Foods isn’t lab-grown. We experiment and create our science in the lab, but don't produce there. Our products come from a production base much like a farm as a production base for animals.''

Finless Foods is a tech company in San Francisco. Beginning in 2017, it's been working to bring to market a species of cultured bluefin tuna (蓝鳍金枪鱼) created using cellular technology. Shortly after that, the company produced its first pound of bluefin tuna meat for a cost of about $19,000. Since then, however, it's been the first battle to bring that price down.

Selden terms what Finless Foods is doing as ''cell-based seafood''. ''We're growing seafood from real seafood cells,'' Selden explained. ''We take cells from a fish once, and then grow them endlessly from that. We do the same process that happens inside of a fish and make it happen outside of a fish. ''

The goal of cellular seafood isn't to entirely destroy the current seafood industry. Instead, it's intended to augment it—and perhaps to help reduce some of the more harmful aspects of current fishing practices like overfishing and illegal fishing. And when it comes to certain sea species, this laboratory-based approach could help create a plentiful supply of certain fish without endangering the survival of certain overfished species as a whole.

32.What is the main function of the second paragraph?

    A. Warning us of the shrinking seafood supplies.

    B. Stressing the significance of cellular seafood.

C . Analyzing the reasons for global overfishing.

    D. Showing the environmental effect of seafood.

33.What is the top priority of producing cellular seafood ?

    A. Cutting down the high cost of production .

    B. Enriching the nutrient content.

    C. Reducing harmful health effect.

    D. Simplifying the production process.

34.What can we learn from the passage?

    A. Cellular seafood isn’t lab-grown food because it is processed in a production base wholly.

    B. Finless Foods does the same process inside a fish as a fish does.

    C. Finless Foods can create a new range of fish.

    D. Cellular seafood can strengthen the current seafood industry.

    35. What is the best title for the text?

    A. Seafood in Cells.  B.Cheaper Seafood.

C.Insufficient Seafood Supplies.  D.Current Seafood Industry.

My teenage son, Jordan, always complained about having to be home earlier than all his friends. He would tell me that he was already seventeen, but still had a curfew(宵禁). He believed he was practically an adult. I pointed out that he was not an adult as he was still in high school.

"You don't trust me!" he yelled. Before I continued, he rolled his eyes, slammed the door and walked away. I sighed. How could I make Jordan see that I only wanted to keep him safe?

I decided to go for a walk, hoping the December air would clear my head. I opened the front door and nearly stepped on her: a small black cat, just like a meatball. "Hi, Meatball," I said, bringing her into my arms. I walked back in, touching her neck gently. Meatball seemed happy enough to come in the house, but after an hour or two, she sat by the door, meowing to go back outside.

"Why won't she just stay in with us all the time?" Nathan, my youngest son asked.

I explained to him that she was happy here but she liked being able to come and go as she pleased.

"That must be nice"Jordan muttered from the other room, complaining why the cat, not him, could come and go. He even asked me to give Meatball a curfew.

        Meatball became a regular.

One night, temperatures were unusually low. Meatball stood at the door, meowing to go outside.

I shook my head at her, afraid that she might freeze to death. She stared at me and meowed again. I patted her head, "I know you're not happy, but it's for your own good."

"Mom's not being mean to you," Nathan told the cat. "She's just trying to keep you from turning into a frozen meatball." We both laughed at his joke.

The next morning, I couldn't find Meatball. I asked the kids if anyone had seen her.

    注意:

    1.续写词数应为150左右;

The meaningful activity began with a 30-minute instruction in each classroom, where students were instructed about basic principles of scientific observation. Then, the enthusiastic participants were led to a tiny forest to identify different kinds of tree species. Observing plants attentively, each student eagerly shared their findings .

The activity proved an incredibly great success as not only did it facilitate students' development but also it deepened their insight into the plant world.

Jordan nodded, "I let her out last night." My mouth dropped open. "She was outside all night?" I was so furious, "It was freezing and she could die!" Jordan choked back his words, stunned. I grabbed my coat and rushed outside. Jordan followed, fear welling up in his eyes. Several minutes later, the poor thing was found, shaking and curling into a tiny ball. I picked her up, unsure whether she was alive or dead. Jordan was scared, "We need a vet! Now!"

As I drove to the animal hospital, Jordan sat in the back, holding Meatball inside his coat. I could hear him talking to the cat, apologizing repeatedly. Luckily, the vet saved Meatball Seeing her eyes open, Jordan stroked her head, all tears. Then, surprisingly, he turned to me. He apologized for what he had done. "I know you just want to keep me safe," he murmured. I felt a lump in my throat. He rubbed Meatball's back, "Looks like we are both going to observe the curfew. It's for our own good."

    Text 1

M: I have finally passed my driving exam! The driving lessons cost so much money! It cost more than the old car I bought.

W: Congratulations! Yes, old cars are quite cheap — it’s the cost of repairs that is the most expensive thing.

    Text 2

W: How do you feel today after cutting all that wood?

M: My shoulder aches. I think I did too much yesterday.

W: Take it easy today. Watch some movies and I’ll cook a nice meal for you.

    Text 3

M: It’s going to rain all day according to the weather forecast.

W: Well, and it’s too windy tomorrow, so that ruins our plan to go hiking. I was hoping today would be sunny!

    Text 4

M: I believe Tom is home from university tomorrow. I’d like to see him.

W: He’ll arrive at about 8:00 or 9:00 a.m., but he needs to rest. We’ll have dinner at 5:00 p.m. Would you like to join us?

    M: Great.

    Text 5

M: I think I’d be an excellent candidate for the job. I’ve had lots of experience working in sales — and I’m really good with people, like you.

W: I’m not good with numbers though, which is a big part of the job. But that is one of your strengths.

    Text 6

M: OK, take the liquid and carefully pour it into the test tube. You must be very careful in case it burns a hole in the table.

W: Isn’t this a bit risky, sir? My dad is also a teacher and he says science can be dangerous.

M: Not if we take care and do it correctly. Now, once you have poured all of the liquid in, wait for it to react.

W: That’s strange — there’s a lot of smoke coming out of the tube!

M: Don’t worry — that’s supposed to happen. Just keep watching with your teammates. What else do you notice?

W: The color is changing! I love science!

    Text 7

M: Is that a new bike, Lucy? It looks nice with a bright color.

W: Well, my sister bought it from a friend, but she hardly ever used it. I borrowed it so often that last month she just said I could keep it.

M: That was very generous of her. My brother would never lend me anything, let alone give a bike to me.

W: My sister doesn’t value too much of such thing.

M: That’s a good way to be. The less you own, the less you have to tie you down and worry about.

W: That’s right. How long have you kept your bike?

M: A couple of years now. It’s always been a good one. It never gives me any trouble.

W: That is the main thing you want from a bike. You need it to be reliable.

    Text 8

M: This French cave is one of the best in the world in terms of ancient history.

W: When you say “ancient”, how far back in time are we talking? 500 years?

    M: Try again.

    W: 1000 years?

M: Most experts believe the cave paintings you see on the wall are around 17,000 years old.

W: What?! Are you serious? That’s incredible. I’m so glad we came to visit this cave. Staying at the hotel all day was becoming a bit boring, to be honest. I love getting close to history in this way.

M: Me too. As soon as I heard we were staying in this area, I immediately thought of these caves.

W: I didn’t realize you had heard of it. What else do you know?

M: Well, the cave was first discovered in 1940, opened to the public in 1948, then closed again in 1963. Because I’m a university professor, the staff here allow us to get in.

W: Wow! Thank you for taking me.

    Text 9

W: You’ve traveled a lot, haven’t you, Stuart? I’m about to go traveling myself for the first time. What advice would you give me?

M: Well, there are lots of things I can tell you. Is there anything specific you want to know?

W: I do worry about getting lost. If I land in another city, in another part of the world, how can I find my way around?

M: When I arrive somewhere for the first time, I always try to get a map of the area from the airport or the hotel I’m staying at. And I get someone to write down where I am staying, so I can show it to people if I’m lost.

W: Have you ever found yourself somewhere strange, with no map or directions?

M: Oh, many a time. The thing to do then is ask for directions. But don’t just ask one person, because some people don’t like to admit they don’t know. Ask several people.

W: Who are the best people to ask?

M: It depends. Obviously, tourists might not be familiar with the area, and children might not know some places. Delivery people are good, because they drive around different places all the time.

W: What if there’s no one around?

M: Try to remember places like towers or tall buildings, near where you want to go. They can help you find your way.

    Text 10

Today I want to talk about the importance of being prepared. There is a famous saying that goes: “If you fail to prepare, prepare to fail.” It’s famous because it is so true. Let me share with you a story that happened to me recently that proves this.

Over the summer, I had to get the main bedroom of my house rebuilt. Last week, I organized for a building examination for 11:00 on Monday. Well, at 10:55, I was still in the shower. I had forgotten all about it! When the examiner knocked on the door, I rushed out of the shower. However, I hadn’t taken the time to upgrade all the paperwork. I was totally unprepared — not to mention completely embarrassed! By 11:05, the examiner had left. He couldn’t wait around for me to get ready as he was scheduled for another job somewhere else. I made him angry by wasting his time. Unfortunately, I had to book another appointment — and I had to pay twice!

The point I am trying to make is, please, whatever you do in life, always be prepared!
