As the word’s most expensive train station, the Oculus serves the PATH train and 12 subway line, and houses a beautiful mall inside. The structure is a lasting reminder of the attacks of September 11, 2001. The building’s outdoor platform takes you 65-feet into the sky making it the highest public balcony in NYC It features grand views of our city’s skyline. Brave souls can stand on a large, see-through glass floor and wave to passers-by 1,100 feet beneath. There’s a 10,000-square-foot bar, restaurant and event space on the 101st floor.

    Little Island

Floating on the Hudson River, the $250 million public park looks dreamy. Aside from all the eye-catching nature, it has a space for year-round performances. Salvador Dali wasn’t exactly modest. And he’ll tell you so, too, face to face at the Salvador Dali Museum in St. Petersburg, Florida. Here, the Spanish surrealist is alive and well, ready to talk to you in person about his art.

Well, sort of. This Dali is brought to life through the magic of artificial intelligence. It’s a newly opened exhibition called “Dali lives”, and it is more than 2,000 Dali works in about 20,000 square feet of exhibit space. Three video boards showing a life-size Dali, standing 5’8’’tall, form the exhibit — one at the museum gate, one on the third floor by the main exhibits (including Dali’s paintings and photographs, two technologically treated paintings allowing visitors to put themselves inside the paintings, and a special experience of “walking” through Dali’s 1934 painting “Archaeological Reminiscence of Millet’s Angelus”) and one in the gift shop on the way out. Each one offers a different experience when you push a doorbell on the board to get Dali’s attention.

The most surprising thing about “Dali Lives” is that you’re dealing with a version of the artist himself. It looks like Dali, it sounds like Dali, it is Dali. The museum worked together with the San Francisco advertising agency Goodby SilvrsteinPartners to achieve this, feeding hundreds of new interviews and words from his written works into an artificial intelligence system to recreate the artist. The result was a living, moving version of Dali ready to converse with anyone there, answering their questions.

“Dali himself was at the forefront of technology and was always experimenting with and trying new things,” says Beth Bell, marketing director at the Dali Museum. “we think he would have loved these types of things. It’s in the spirit of Dali himself.

24What can we know about Dali from the text?

    AHe was a modest surrealist.

BHe once lived in St. Petersburg.

CHe produced a lot of works of art.

DHe came up with the idea of “Dali Lives”.

25What can visitors do at the exhibition “Dali Lives”?

    ALearn painting skills.

BGet a surprising gift from Dali.

CWatch lots of interviews with Dali.

DEnjoy the magic of modern technology.

26What does the underlined word “converse” in Paragraph 3 mean?

    ALive. BTalk. CPlay. DWork.

27What is the best title of the text?

ADali — A Famous Painter BDali — A Spanish Surrealist

CA Different Exhibition DMeet With Dali

Have you ever looked at a seal and thought “Is that the same seal I saw yesterday?” Well, there could soon be an app for that. Taking inspiration from other technology adapted for recognizing primates (灵长目动物) and bears, Krista Ingram, a biologist at Colgate University, developed SealNet, the software that uses deep learning and a convolutional neural network (卷积神经网络) to tell one seal face from another.

The team had to train their software to identify seal faces. “I give it a photograph, it finds the face, and clips it to a standard size,” says Ingram.

They tested the software using 406 different seals and found that SealNet could correctly identify the seals’ faces 85 percent of the time. The team has since expanded its database to include around 1,500 seal faces. As the number of seals logged in the database goes up, so does the accuracy of the identification, Ingram says.

As with all tech, however, SealNet is not always infallible. The software saw seal faces in other body parts, vegetation, and even rocks. In one case, Ingram and her students did a double take at the uncanny (不可思议的) resemblance between a rock and a seal face.

Ingram points to site fidelity (忠诚) as an aspect of seal behavior that SealNet could shed more light on. The team’s trials indicated that some harbor seals return to the same sites year after year. Increasing scientists’ understanding of how seals move around could strengthen arguments for protecting specific areas, says Anders Galatius, an ecologist at Aarhus University in Denmark who was not involved in the project.

28What is the main function of SealNet?

ADistinguishing different seals. BRecognizing primates and bears.

CTaking pictures for various animals. DClipping photos to a standard size.

29How can the accuracy of SealNet be improved?

ABy taking detailed pictures. BBy uploading more seal faces.

CBy upgrading the technology. DBy improving the skills of users.

30What does the underlined word “infallible” mean in paragraph 4?

    AUnique. BScientific. CConvenient. DReliable.

31What is the significance of SealNet?

AIt can help find more seals. BIt can help better protect seals.

CIt can help locate a specific seal. DIt can help learn about seals.

    D

Migraine is a disease that has a number of symptoms (症状), including head pain that can stick around from four hours to several days. While migraines can happen partly because of genetic (基因的) problems, attacks may happen by chance, set off by a cause in the environment.

One common cause is food, and some common dietary causes include alcohol, salt, sugar, chocolate, and caffeine. But there are many others, and scientists continue to identify more. Last year, for example, a Brazilian study found that watermelons brought on a headache within minutes in about 30 percent of the participants.

Some new researches are looking at which foods and what kinds of diets can prevent or lessen migraines. A new study published last year by a team of researchers found that a diet higher in fish oils rather than vegetable oils helped people ease their headaches. In the study, those on a diet lower in vegetable oil and higher in fatty fish had a 30 to 40 percent reduction in total headache hours per day, serious headache hours per day, and overall headache days per month compared to the control group.

Tanya Kamka had suffered weekly migraines for most of her life. Then, in her 50s, she joined the NIH diet experiment and increased her intake of fish. After only a few months, “I haven’t had a migraine, not even a mild one, in over two years.” she says.

For others, the solution comes from plants, not fish. A 60-year-old man joined a study on the food-migraine link and turned to a diet, which includes a lot of dark, leafy greens. After two months he was experiencing only one migraine a month instead of the 18 to 24 a month he’d suffered before.

Clearly, people with migraines react to food in very different ways. What works for one person may not work for another.

32What do we know about migraine from paragraph 1?

AIt is related to sleep time. BIt never runs in the family.

CIt lasts for at least three hours. DIt can be caused by the environment.

33What is paragraph 2 mainly about?

AThe length of migraine. BFoods that lead to migraine.

CThe most common cause of migraine. DA Brazilian study about migraine.

34What can lessen migraines according to a new study published last year?

    AFish oils. BVegetable oils.

CAll kinds of fat. DVarious Vegetables.

35Which is the author’s opinion about the effect of food on migraines?

AIt varies from person to person. BIt can only stay for a short time.

CIt depends on the age of a patient. DIt is connected to how much one takes.

Last Saturday, a delegation of Australian students visited our school.

During the visit, a series of activities was arranged. Upon arrival, the Australian friends were warmly welcomed and shown around our campus before visiting the school history museum, helping them gain a deeper insight into our school’s development. In the afternoon, they attended a calligraphy class, savoring the charm of Chinese characters. The highlight was an evening gala where students from both countries impressed the audience with their wonderful performances.

The visit is such a success that our mutual understanding is enhanced and our friendship is strengthened.

    67

When graduation day arrived, I saw Kyle and found he was a little nervous. I went over to hug him and said, “Hey, big guy, you’ll be great!” He smiled and thanked me. Then he took his place and started his speech, in which he thanked his parents, teachers, his classmates... especially his friends who helped him go through those tough years. “A good friend can make a difference to you,” he added. To my surprise, he told the story of the first day we met.

Kyle said he had planned to quit school that day before he saw me. He thought he performed poorly in school and let his parents down. For a long time he had been suffering depression. He ended up considering leaving school. That was why I saw him carrying his stuff home that day. “Thankfully, my friend offered me a hand and that changed my mind.” Hearing his words, I felt warmth fill me. Only then did I realize with one small action you can make a difference and change a person’s life.
